Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. ~~My name is Lady and I am almost 4 years old. I came into rescue when my first owner passed away and I came to live with his son and family. At first I was sad but within a couple of weeks I came to settle into my new home. At first things were good with my human parents, human brothers and sisters and my much older four legged canine brother. As time passed my canine brother and I grew apart and we didn't get along very well so it was best that I move along to find another family. My two favorite interests are playing fetch and going on long walks. I love to play ball because I'm energetic and fast according to my foster dad. I prefer older children and am best suited to a home with another more dominant male as my companion. I am completely housebroken and have free range of my foster dad's home. I like to be next to my family and sleep on the floor next to their bed at night. I do have a slight issue of getting into things when they go to work or out. I think they call it separation anxiety. My dad said it's very mild and it only happens rarely now. I don't damage furniture but I tend to gather things that are not mine but otherwise I have perfect house manners. I get along wonderfully with my current canine brothers but I am dog selective without a proper introduction. I'm also not fond of cats or any smaller animals according to my foster dad. I am a lover! My family comes first and I have unconditional loyalty to them. I'm a great watch dog and have great situation awareness. I'm looking for an active person or family with a large back yard since I love playing fetch. My new parent should have good leadership skills for me to feel safe and comfortable. My current backyard is an acre and I use it all for my enjoyment. I would make an excellent running partner. I have so much more to give. If you don't believe me just ask my foster dad. I'm currently living in Charlotte NC. If you think you can offer me my furever home, please work with your adoption coordinator or fill out an app at southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. ~~Hi, I'm Luna 2, a beautiful blue sable and tan girl. I weigh 70 lean pounds and my Foster Mom says I am a sweetheart. I was kept outside in my life before rescue and it appears I was forced to have many litters of puppies to make money for my owners. Then, I somehow ended up in a scary place called an animal shelter. SGSR saved me in the nick of time and now I know I will always be safe and loved. I live indoors, have a soft bed and don't have to worry if I will have food. I love eating! Yum! I also really like car rides, back scratches, hanging out with my people, taking naps, and going for walks. I get excited about walks and just can't help singing the song of my people at first. I settle down though and then I try hard to walk politely on a leash. I'm still working on that but I am making progress. I live with my foster mom and dad, four dog-savvy kids, three other dogs (a Lab, a German Shepherd Dog and a Yorkie mix) as well as three cats. I am friendly and kind to everyone and don't chase the cats unless they run away. That is just too tempting. I like the other dogs to know I am the boss but once that is established, I am a good friend to them. I have nice manners and am crate trained and house trained. I do need to be let out more than some other adult dogs. I think it might be hard for me to "hold it" for very long periods of time because I had so many puppies. That is hard on a girl's body, you know!? My age is a mystery because I have had such a hard life, but the vet guesses I am about five years young. I am healthy in every way except I have a hard time with my skin. The "blue" genetics that make me so unique and pretty also make me prone to skin issues. I need a family willing to give me lots of TLC to stay as healthy and gorgeous as possible. I will need occasional meds, grain free food and special baths to accomplish that. My Foster Mom cannot say enough good about me and says I am sweet and funny and an "easy-keeper". She says anyone who is lucky enough to adopt me will just adore me. If you'd like to meet me, please let your adoption coordinator know. If you are not yet approved, and you're in our adoption territory of VA, NC or MD, you can find our adoption application at our website, www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. I am being fostered in Yadkinville, NC. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi there! Bonita is my name and chasing tennis balls is my game! I am a 7 year old, solid black, gorgeous, female GSD. My original owner purchased me from a breeder but had to find me a new home due to financial hardships. I am about 82 lbs and very athletic. I love to go on car rides and walks/runs every opportunity that I get. I’m very protective of my house and will alert to strange noises or people. No cats or small dogs for me but I love to play with medium to large dogs. I would be happy to have older children in my forever home but no young children please...I'm afraid of them. I love to chase (especially tennis balls), toys, cats, squirrels, lights ...just about anything that moves. I have been working on my confidence since I'm a little timid in new situations. Because of this, I prefer to be around older children. I walk very well on a leash and know my commands, even a few in German. I am completely housebroken and love to sleep in my crate or dog bed but I do have a tendency to sneak on the furniture when no one is home...don't tell my foster! I am very energetic and full of life and if you have treats I will be your best friend. Are you my new family? I'm being fostered in Elon, NC! Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi my name is Lovett! I am a very pretty 6 year old German Shepherd. I have been told that I am a little short for my breed, but I weigh over 80lbs. I LOVE to eat! My favorite snacks are chicken, peanut butter and popcorn... when I find it on the floor. Most of the time I am very chill. I like to take naps, especially on the couch. I have learned not to get on the couch unless I am invited...and, well unless my parents aren’t around. I just can’t help it, because it’s sooo comfy. I get really excited when I get to eat. I know to sit and wait until I am told to eat, but sometimes I get so excited that I forget. I am not food aggressive, and I don’t mind a back rub while I eat my dinner. Sometimes I get so excited to go for a walk that my foster mom and dad have trouble getting my leash on me. I will sit and wait for you to put my leash on, but I like to try to give you high fives while you put it on. I pull a little at the beginning of my walk, but then I remember that I am supposed to heel. I try to lead on my walks, but I heel again when you remind me. I love car rides! I will jump immediately into the car if the door is open. I easily go in my crate, but occasionally you may need to bribe me with a treat. I do well when I am left out at home alone. I am not destructive, but I start to think I am Queen of the house...and nestle in on the couch for a nap. I need someone who understands that a GSD wants and needs rules and boundaries. My foster parents think that I am wonderful and they tell me so all the time. I don’t like thunderstorms and I’m terrified of the vacuum. When I get scared, I try to hide behind my current Alpha human or anywhere away from the vacuum. I have been through OLK9 Beginner Training and I hope that my new parents can keep up with my training and practice with me, so I can be the best girl possible! Once I acknowledge you as my Alpha human I will try to stick close by your side, but sometimes I do become curious and wander off. I would suggest a leash or fenced in yard to keep me safe. I get along well with other dogs of all sizes, as long as they are nice to me. I have met some cats, and I ignored them until they hissed at me. Then, I barked at them...so no cats for me please. They are weird hairy creatures...and they smell funny. I don’t bark much, but I do like to let my parents know when someone is at the door, or in the driveway. I like people and I'm very sweet, but I want to be introduced properly to new people coming into the house. I would probably do best in a home with older children, since I tend to knock small children down when I become excited. I am being fostered in Jonesborough, TN. If you think I would be the perfect fit for you, please contact your adoption coordinator or fill out an application to potentially adopt me Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Daisey! Daisey is an 8 year old, 80 pound, female GSD. She is good around older children; she likes adults and has no preference between men and women. She currently lives peacefully with a cat; and a small dog. She obeys basic commands (come, sit, stay, crate), and is great companion and watchdog. Someone is typically home with Daisey during the day. Historically she has been home alone, not in her crate, for up to 6 to 7 hours with no issue. She has never damaged anything in our home when left alone. She is crate trained and has been in both a plastic and woven crate with a pad. She sleeps on the floor in our bedroom at night. Daisey is very loyal and protective, and takes her watchdog job very seriously. While this makes her a very good watchdog, it also means that she barks at all humans and animals in her territory or who enter the home for the first time. She is skittish around young children, especially toddlers, and will bark and growl if they approach the fence in our yard. Like many Shepherds, she gets anxious when she does not know what is expected of her. She is also scared of thunderstorms. Daisey loves to go on walks and on runs. She has a lot of energy! She likes to fetch balls and sticks and be outside. Otherwise, she likes to be with her human pack. Daisey has a medical condition called pannus which requires her to take inexpensive eye drops daily. Daisey is being fostered near Greenville, NC! If you're interested in meeting Daisey please contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not have an adoption coordinator and live in VA, NC or MD, please complete an adoption application at southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi! My name is Toby. I'm a 3 year old 80 pound happy, happy, happy boy. My foster mom likes to call me goofy because I love attention and like to bring her things to show her how much I like her. I am housebroken, crate trained and love dogs and people of all sizes. My foster mom thinks I would be best in a home with older kids and bigger dogs because I am mouthy and am not aware of my size. I still think I'm a lap dog and might accidentally knock a little one over. Because I'm so submissive, I get along great with my fur siblings, who are also German Shepherds: two males and one female. I like my ball and other toys, too, but my favorite thing is food. I mean, who doesn't like food?! Thanks to the nice man at Blue Line K9 Training, I have basic obedience training and have been taught not to bark at cars. He also helped to calm me down when I meet other dogs because I get so excited when I have the opportunity to make new friends. I also know how to sit and heel and have very good recall. I LOVE car rides but will need a family that will continue to enforce what I've learned in training. My ideal family would be active and take me places even if only for several daily walks. My foster mom is so impressed that I don't even try to get on the furniture, although she invites me to sit on it. She is not so impressed that I like to counter surf, but we are working on it. I mean, nobody's perfect, right? Think you could be my furever family? If so, please work with your adoption coordinator or complete an app at southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. I will chase bugs with them all day long. I get along with all dogs, big or little. I will bark at things that I think should not be here, but am easily corrected. All you need to do is ask me nicely, I will do anything you want. I am doing better on a leash, I really don't need one as I stay very close to my Mom . I love to be brushed and will sit patiently while you brush. I will chase a ball until your arm gets tired - most the time I bring it back to you. I've shown interest in a cat, but only because everybody else did. I think I would be okay with a dog savvy cat. My mom can test me, I will do anything for her. I will walk with you, run with you, play ball with you, or lay with you and watch a movie. I will be anything you want me to be. Don't you want to make me your own? Anya tends to be on the shy side, so she needs someone that is patient with her, and shows her the love and attention she needs. She is very active. She is learning with her foster mom to be social and learning her doggie manners. She does have a foster GSD sister and they do get along. Anya will tend to be a bit bossy (like most female shepherds)but with proper introductions she does well. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. This is Jake, a six year old Bi colored German Shepherd. He's most likely been an outside penned dog for the majority of his life with little training, although he has come a long way and has transitioned well to indoor life. Jake likes to think that he is an alpha dog with a moderate energy level. When Jake entered the rescue, he was heartworm positive, but has completely recovered with flying colors. Jake has a great disposition as he is very playful, intelligent and curious. He gets along well with his older foster fur sibling but tends to want to be the center of attention. He's not been around cats that we know of but will chase and bark at them if he sees one, or they happen to wander in the yard. He is very food motivated and gets really excited at feeding time and love treats. Jake has been working on his manners and learning the rules of being in the house. Sitting, waiting and shaking before eating. Sitting & waiting to go out and come in from outside and loading in the truck, and some basic obedience training. Jake is now fully housebroken and crate trained, although he doesn't need to be crated. Jake would do best with a family that will develop his unlimited potential. Jake has not been around small children but is a loving dog that does not jump on people or chew on hands. Jake loves to go for walks but needs to learn not to pull on his leash. Jake likes playing with and tearing fuzz off of tennis balls, chewing on large hard bones or Nylabones and will floss his teeth with a pull rope. Jake will also need a fenced yard so he doesn't get out and take himself for a walk. Jake would do best with a submissive male or female dog or as the only dog in the house with people who are willing to help him realize his full potential. Jake is being fostered in Fayetteville, NC. Please contact your adoption coordinator if you think you are a good fit for Jake. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Turner!! This sweet, handsome, senior will make someone very lucky! Turner is the whole package and has a sweet, easy energy. He is easygoing, fun, loves to be with his family and has excellent house manners. Turner loves attention, but does not demand it. He likes to go for walks, and his foster has taken him on short runs as well. He does okay with children, but would prefer older, calmer children. Photos of Turner do him no justice...he is quite the looker! And he is very affectionate but not slobbery or jumpy. He has done well with other dogs and has even done well with the foster's house cat. Turner was rescued from a neglectful home, and after he joined SGSR, our vet even discovered that he has been shot sometime during his life! But he doesn't let the past get him down...Turner is very grateful for the fresh start and just wants a family to call his own! A bed was recently donated for Turner, and he immediately plopped himself down and just looked so content to have a bed of his own. He is around nine-years-old and is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and heartworm negative. Turner has some mild arthritis, which is typical for his age, but it is well-controlled with an inexpensive joint supplement. We think he is pretty amazing!! :) If you would like to meet Turner, please contact your adoption coordinator. Turner is being fostered in the Knoxville, TN area.
