Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Norwegian Elkhound / Mixed (medium coat). Approx 7 years and 55 lb 5/25/16: Raleigh and I are celebrating her 1 year anniversary in foster. Sunday made one year since I met her, laying on docs examining table with her leg basically reduced to hamburger meat. Raleigh survived terrible owners, being hit by cars twice, several surgeries, and months in boarding until she'd healed enough to come home to foster. She deserves the best family ever...are you that family? On May 22, 2015, a friend contacted me about a dog named Raleigh. She'd been hit by a car in the past and her owners hadn't gotten her any treatment. On this day, she was injured again (same leg) and the owners again declined treatment but this time agreed to surrender her. My vet wasn't sure if he could save her leg, but he wanted to try. After thousands of dollars in donations, multiple surgeries, and 5 months in boarding during her recovery, Raleigh was finally able to come home to foster with me on October 5th. He did manage to save her leg, but she doesn't really use it. Her spine was injured and for those five months in boarding, she was bladder and bowel incontinent. Her tail was cropped during her recovery to make for easier clean up. When I got her home to foster, I wanted to try to figure out ways to help her improve the incontinence issue. Someone recommended a holistic treatment for the incontinence and it worked great! Raleigh is now fully bladder continent and only occasionally has bowel accidents. She's about 5-6 years old and weighs about 50 lb. Raleigh would do best in a home with someone who's home most of the time to encourage her to go outside to do her business. Right now she'd rather stay indoors where it's warm all the time, but with encouragement she will go outside to potty. You just have to pay attention and keep her on a schedule. I tested her with a cat outside that wasn't afraid of dogs and she didn't show any interest in the cat. I don't know if she would chase a cat that runs from dogs, but honestly she doesn't move that quickly so I doubt she could catch a cat these days. As far as other dogs, Raleigh is fine with males but acts dominant/bossy around females. 11/27/15 update: She is good with kids My niece and nephew stayed last night They are 8 and 13 but she did great and so did they. She's a sweet dog who deserves so much more than life has thrown at her so far. We're hoping someone can find it in their heart to give her a forever home. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Scrappy is in foster at my dad's house. He does great with my dad's dogs, but honestly I think he'd prefer to be the only dog. He is food aggressive with humans, so needs someone to hand feed him his meals for awhile to help him get over this. He's an old dude, probably 10+ years and weighs about 15 lb. He likes to greet me by singing the song of his people! LOL He's had such a rough life. Perhaps some senior somewhere is interested in giving an old guy a home where he can be spoiled for whatever time he has left? Rescues, courtesy listings appreciated. Sponsored for rescue. 6/23: Saw Scrappy this morning. His jaw his a little straighter but pretty swollen. Doc doesn't think it will hold up though because the front part of the mandible was very soft. The back jaw repair should hold up. Update: Surgery scheduled for the week of 6/20/16. Condition on intake: Poor, will likely need surgery. Senior, around 10 years and 15 lb, but very full of life! 5/16 vet visit: 2 old jaw fractures The one in the front will be an easy fix but the one in the back is not so simple. Antibiotics before either can be repaired. Doc is concerned that the back one may not heal even with surgery. He has hypothyroidism also. 6/4: Funds raised! Surgery is scheduled. Thank you sponsors! 6/22: Scrappy is at the vet's office. We'll post an update on how he does with the surgery when it's over. Scrappy's post-surgery update: The bone was too soft to hold a plate, so we installed wires to hold the jaw together. Whether or not the wire stays in place is questionable due to the softness of the bone. If you email us to inquire, watch your email for our autoresponder and please read it. Breed: Shih-Poo
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Williamson, WV
Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Intake date: 7/6/16 Available: Now 10/5/16 update: Potter is now healthy and ready for his forever home! This little guy loves people and loves to eat! He's a senior and his sight is not good and seems to be getting worse, so it would be best for Potter to be the only pet and live in an adults-only home. He is paper trained but not completely housebroken. Potter hoards things and loves to sleep on his foster mom's clothes...he takes comfort from her scent. He likes to rough house with his foster mom. At this point in his life, he basically wants nothing to do with other animals. Potter is a people pooch seeking a retirement home! Intake Condition: severely matted and crying because it hurts to move. Found maggots eating at him. Blood work was a mess. He was unwilling to eat at first. Clearly Potter was at death's door when I found him. 7/15 update: Before and after photos uploaded. Before=July 6th and after = today July 15th We still have a long way to go physically but mentally and emotionally I can already see the change 7/19 update: Yesterday evening I got home and checked on Potter- he was fine, happy to see me, had eaten most of his special food, had drank lots of water and had peed three times on his puppy pad. A hour later I go back in and run his bath & he won't stand up, is whining, and is growling at me. So I call doc and we decide that it's his skin. It obviously hurts. We stop the steroid just in case and gave him some pain medication I had on hand- continue the antibiotics. A little bit later and he was fine so I was sure it was his skin. All checks through the night and this morning he is his regular self. Took him in to see doc for labs and his liver is way off, his WBC count is up and his platelets have stopped going up, so we're stopping some meds, starting others, changing food, and shooting for an ultrasound tomorrow. He needs a liver biopsy but is far too unhealthy to survive a surgery. So we're still in the woods. Currently he's riding shot gun and is pain free. On the bright side, Doc was really happy with how his wounds are healing. 7/21 update: Potter's liver ultrasound was good.
