Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Norwegian Elkhound / Mixed (medium coat). Please read the entire listing before contacting us. Available to adopters in DE, MD, PA, NJ, CT, or MA. Approx 7 years and 55 lb Raleigh survived terrible owners, being hit by cars twice, several surgeries, and months in boarding until she'd healed enough to come home to foster. One leg is not very useful, but the vet was at least able to save the leg. She deserves the best family ever...are you that family? I tested her with a cat outside that wasn't afraid of dogs and she didn't show any interest in the cat. I don't know if she would chase a cat that runs from dogs, but honestly she doesn't move that quickly so I doubt she could catch a cat these days. As far as other dogs, Raleigh is fine with males but acts dominant/bossy around females. Raleigh is good with kids My niece and nephew visited. They are 8 and 13 but she did great and so did they. She's a sweet dog who deserves so much more than life has thrown at her so far. We're hoping someone can find it in their heart to give her a forever home. Due to spinal cord damage, most of which has recovered, Raleigh is occasionally fecal incontinent. She is able to hold her urine. A doggie door to a fenced yard would be very helpful for her. If you email us to inquire, watch your email for our autoresponder and please read it. We adopt to residents of MD, PA, NJ, CT, NY, MA, RI, NH, VT, or ME. Rescue inquiries welcome. Request to Add a New Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Please read the entire listing before contacting us. 1/27/17 update: Tom is still looking for rescue or a forever home. He is very food driven and likes to play with toys when the mood strikes. He is great with other dogs and likes to sleep in bed at night. He likes to be held and picked up most of the time but can be temperamental about it at times. Love's belly rubs. Probably not a good fit for a home with small kids. Receives Levothyroxine due to low thyroid level. 1/23/17 update: Health is somewhat improved. Gets thyroid med twice a day. Tom likes to beg for human food. Would do best in an adults-only home. Skin looks great but he still has junk stuck in the fur on his face and ears that I can't get off. Likes to sleep in the bed. Good with other dogs. 1/3/17 - First vet visit: Doc thinks he's 10 years old. Skin issue, ear infection, old eye ulcer. Doing labs. 12/31/16 - Rescued from a shelter Thomas is here and he's a little grumpy but I would be too... His skin is a mess. His eyes are a mess. His coat is a matted mess. And I haven't tried to look in his mouth yet If you email us to inquire, watch your email for our autoresponder and please read it. We adopt to residents of MD, PA, NJ, CT, NY, MA, RI, NH, VT, or ME. Location: Williamson, WV
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Rottweiler / Mixed (medium coat). Please read the entire listing before contacting us. I found Chester as a stray in early December. He was emaciated, in poor body condition. Over the past couple of months he's blossomed into a healthy, somewhat active, social guy who's good with other dogs and people. He's kenneled with Oreo (female who is high energy) and a male beagle who is medium energy and they all get along great. Chester is a very mixed breed mutt who shows possible traits of these breeds: German Shepherd (muzzle/head), Plott Hound (colors on body, droopy ears), and Rottweiler (mostly that mask on his face). Chester is around 1 year old and weighs about 65 lb now that he's filled out. He'd make a nice pet for a family with another playful dog or that likes to go on long walks/hikes, camping, etc. He's medium to high energy, but that could be due to the fact that he's kenneled now. Once that burns off in a foster or adoptive home, he might turn out to be a medium energy fellow. At his current energy level, he's probably best suited for kids age 10 and up. Available to adopters in northeastern states. If you email us to inquire, watch your email for our autoresponder and please read it. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Please read the entire listing before contacting us. 2/23/17 update: Scrappy, who had surgery on two fractures in his jaw when we first got him, is having continued deterioration of his jaw bone. He had began having a very hard time eating and Dad has been accommodating him, but it has come to the point where he can't pick up food at all or hold it in his mouth well. His lower jaw is much shorter than his snout and now the distance is even worse. Today's X-ray showed that the bone around his surgical wires is crumbling. My options are to remove the left mandible, which I refuse to do; do surgery to rewire the jaw, which will likely cause even further bone crumbling possibly leaving us with a problem that can't be fixed or managed; or I can leave it alone and purée his food. Puréed food it is. I'll have to maybe spoon feed him as his tongue doesn't seem to be functioning well. Scrappy loves to eat and is very enthusiastic about it. He has a desire to eat and as long as he does I'll do whatever I can to help him thrive. That being said, quality vs quantity is on my mind. Even though at this time I'm hopeful I can manage Scrappy's diet, I won't allow him to slowly starve to death. Scrappy is now hospice. He has already lost some weight but there are several different things I can feed him and I have a high calorie recipe I'm going to try to get his weight back on. He will come to live with me and if someone who understands and accepts his needs would be interested in adopting him, I'm not opposed to it but we would have to have a mutual understanding on goals for Scrappy. IRRESISTIBLE SENIOR with Movie-Star-Good-Looks Seeking a Loving FOREVER Home!!!! Ok, so he's no Kirk Douglas, but leading-man SCRAPPY does bear a striking resemblance to Sid the Sloth, star of the ICE AGE movies! This talented little love-nugget enjoys singing the songs of his people to express the happiness in his heart (see his performance video). Scrappy earned his name by surviv ing a very sad life of neglect and abuse. Once rescued by ARTBAR his little jaw was reset and most of his damaged teeth were removed (thus his silly uncontainable tongue!). Scrappy is estimated to be about 10 yrs old and just 15 lbs, but he still likes to be the big man on campus! He's currently fostered in a home with multiple dogs and doing great, but Scrappy can be slightly dog-selective and bossy, so for this reason he'd probably enjoy a life of adoration as an only dog or as a sibling to mellow, submissive dogs. Because of his storied past, and due to the fact that he's missing many teeth, Scrappy gets cranky when he fears others might take his food from him (we've all been there!). For that reason we'd love to find a big-hearted soul who would be willing to hand feed him at first to help him conquer his food worries! Scrappy is currently in WV and can be transported to an approved Adopter or Rescue in Eastern OH, VA, MD, PA, NY, NJ, & New England! Are you the FOREVER HOME that Scrappy has been so patiently waiting for? If so please visit artbar.petfinder.com to fill out an application. If you email us to inquire, watch your email for our autoresponder and please read it. We adopt to residents of MD, PA, NJ, CT, NY, MA, RI, NH, VT, or ME. Rescue inquiries welcome. Intake 1/18/17 - Elderly owner sadly had to surrender him due to no longer being able to care for him. 1/19 update: It's turning out that Sampson has a few medical issues. He's has a large tumor in his mouth that will be removed next week. There is a 50/50 chance that it is cancerous but doc says most oral cancer he has dealt with has turned out to be one specific kind that rarely metastasis but does usually slowly come back. Debulking surgery will be what is done because where it's located there is basically no extra gum or flesh to stitch back together. He has a skin infection on his neck that smells almost as bad as his severe double ear infections. I think he is completely deaf. He has one blue eye that is draining green and is watery. His thyroid is on the low end of normal so we will monitor but not start treatment. His nose has a skin issue and I'm going to start putting snout balm on it. Sam came home with an oral antibiotic, an antibiotic eye drop and an antibiotic ear drop. He is eating soft food and I see no issue with with his appetite or ability to eat. I did get a few tail wags now that he's home. If you email us to inquire, watch your email for our autoresponder and please read it. Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Please read the entire listing before contacting us. Available to adopters in DE, MD, PA, NJ, CT, or MA. 10/5/16 update: Potter is now healthy and ready for his forever home! This little guy loves people and loves to eat! He's a senior and his sight is not good and seems to be getting worse, so it would be best for Potter to be the only pet and live in an adults-only home. He is paper trained but not completely housebroken. Potter hoards things and loves to sleep on his foster mom's clothes...he takes comfort from her scent. He likes to rough house with his foster mom. At this point in his life, he basically wants nothing to do with other animals. Potter is a people pooch seeking a retirement home! Intake Condition: severely matted and crying because it hurts to move. Found maggots eating at him. Blood work was a mess. He was unwilling to eat at first. Clearly Potter was at death's door when I found him. 7/15 update: Before and after photos uploaded. Before=July 6th and after = today July 15th We still have a long way to go physically but mentally and emotionally I can already see the change 7/19 update: Yesterday evening I got home and checked on Potter- he was fine, happy to see me, had eaten most of his special food, had drank lots of water and had peed three times on his puppy pad. A hour later I go back in and run his bath & he won't stand up, is whining, and is growling at me. So I call doc and we decide that it's his skin. It obviously hurts. We stop the steroid just in case and gave him some pain medication I had on hand- continue the antibiotics. A little bit later and he was fine so I was sure it was his skin. All checks through the night and this morning he is his regular self. Took him in to see doc for labs and his liver is way off, his WBC count is up and his platelets have stopped going up, so we're stopping some meds, starting others, changing food, and shooting for an ultrasound tomorrow. He needs a liver biopsy but is far too unhealthy to survive a surgery. So we're still in the woods. Currently he's riding shot gun and is pain free. On the bright side, Doc was really happy with how his wounds are healing. 7/21 update: Potter's liver ultrasound was good.
