Posted Breed: Husky / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). Imagine living the first 3 years of your life under the overpasses of Culver City bike path? Being born there, hot in the summers, cold in the winters, the noise, the smells and the constant fear of not knowing where your next meal would come from and how you would make it to tomorrow. This was little Romeo's reality for THREE long years, until he was captured by Animal Control. Needless to say, he was not exactly the most cooperative pup, and quickly became a candidate for the dreaded needle. Fortunately, one of our Sachi Animal Rescue volunteer happened to be there that day. Whether Romeo knew this was the end of the road for him or not, our volunteer swears his eyes pleaded with her for help. She did not turn away, did not avert his gaze and decided against the advice of Animal Control to take him out. This turned out to be a more difficult task than anticipated, as Romeo had never been touched by humans before and was not about to let this happen. He was as feral as they come, growling, snarling and lunging. Yes, this was going to be a challenging endeavor for SAR. We faced it head on, determined to not let this dog down. Fast forward to today: Romeo is now a well adjusted boy, energetic and loving, who enjoys long hikes and loves to run and play with toys. As a Husky/German Shepherd mix, he seems to have a permanent smile on his face and his expression brightens when he recognizes a familiar face. He is so excited to see some of our volunteers that he will let out a long howl, followed by a quick bark to let them know where he is and that it is time for some much needed one on one cuddling. He has been a remarkable student on every levels. His social skills with both people and dogs are up to par with all our other orphans. From where he started we never expected such an amazing turn around in such a small amount of time. Romeo is once again a reminder for us all, of the incredible spirit dogs can exhibit if only given a chance, of the incredible determination they can show in overcoming the most dire circumstances and odds. Romeo is a winner in our book, and anyone lucky enough to welcome this magnificent boy into their lives would definitely be hitting the jackpot. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Mixed (short coat). My family lost me a few times letting me end up in the pound. The last time I was lost and impounded, my family could not pay the redemption fee, so they gave up and never returned. Being a happy-go-lucky guy, I'm essentially a middle-aged puppy! I'm a love bug who is puppy-like in my sweetness, enthusiasm, curiosity, and desire to be part of everything. I haven't had much by way of formal training, and need some work on my leash skills and basic commands. But because I am smart and cooperative, I'll be a good student and easily learn the basics needed to be a model canine citizen. I'd love to be a companion in an active family, from one person to many, where I'm a special buddy and valued as a family member. If you are interested in meeting Rocky, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. [Rocky is a very young 8-year-old and weighs 80 lbs.] (1608)

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I am Oso and I am looking for my new humans. My former humans surrendered me to the pound because they said I was aggressive with a young child. But, I am just a puppy myself, so I got scared in the situation and reacted! Shouldn’t my humans have handled that child and me differently? Because the humans exaggerated their explanation, I was labeled “rescue only” at the pound which blocked anyone from adopting me. I was there for a month, depressed, and was about to die when a kind woman asked Forte to help me. (I have heard of “angels,” so she might have been one of them!) That wonderful woman is now my foster and she has let me feel like my curious, happy and playful self again! I get to go on walks, hang out with new toys, and play fetch for hours! I love sitting on laps and snuggling with people while I give them lots of affection. My foster keeps telling me I am a sweet boy but honestly, I don’t understand why she thinks I taste like candy! I am learning my commands to follow directions better because I want to be well-behaved so that no one else gets rid of me again. I am excited that I have a second chance to finding a home with humans who adore me so I can adore them back. I cannot wait to find someone to play with me forever. If you are interested in meeting Oso, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. [Oso is 7 months old and weighs 9 lbs.] (1609)

Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Chow Chow / Mixed (medium coat). I’m a very smart, alert dog with a sweet disposition. I love to go for walks as well as retrieve a ball. I’m a bit of a stunner — I have a sweet face, cute ears and a blacker muzzle than the rest of my amber blonde coat. They say I look a bit like a husky dog with my curled tail. I’m not just smart and pretty but also a good dog. I will sit, lie down or give you my paw (for a treat). I may also nudge you with my elbow or place my paw on your leg when I want more affection. That’s being good, right? And I love to have my ears rubbed as well as my tummy. When you do it right, I almost sound as if I’m purring, and that’s when I’m in my happy place. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). I was found abandoned….um, in the “valley" of Los Angeles (hence my name, very creative). After an intensive search for my original home, then spay and lots of TLC, I started looking for my forever home where I will be loved and protected for the rest of my life. I’m generally a happy girl, and get along with my canine foster brother and love snuggling with my human foster dad. Once I get to know you, I’m like that all the time. It’s the initial meeting that sometimes flips me out, and I make faces and noises that temporarily make me look scary, even though I have no intention of attacking. I guess I feel I have to protect myself. I know, I know….I’ll never be adopted if I keep doing this, but it's really a catch 22, ya know? I just need someone to adopt me and convince me that I don’t have to protect myself anymore. I’m very well-mannered in the house; actually my foster dad says I’m “perfect.” And I know all my basic commands my previous foster mama taught me. Would you give me a chance and let me blossom in your life? If you are interested in meeting Valley, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. [Valley is about 2 year old and about 51 lbs.] (1508)

      Breed: Mutt

      Age: Adult
      Location: Marina del Rey, CA
Posted Breed: Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sweet little Edie is a gentle soul who really wants a home and a heart to call her own. She was brought to the pound by her own family for reasons unknown, but possibly medical. The pound had her listed as senior, geriatric, not able to walk and incontinent. Seemed euthanasia was the option for her unless a rescue stepped in, so an independent rescuer saved her. All medical issues have been resolved and she moves faster than any other dog. She has such a zest for life that it’s amazing! She is such an inquisitive, wonderful girl, she would be the perfect child companion dog as a treasured best friend. A dog to go on adventures with, walks and hikes, and to sleep with cuddled under the covers sharing secrets. She loves to play with other dogs and would do best in a home with a playful dog, she can even get the shy dogs to play! Edie would love to be home for the holidays, enjoying them with her new family. From thrown away to treasured. Contact her rescuer at: adoptions@apeaction.org to meet this amazing girl who is available this weekend for a meet and greet! Approved applications can set private meetings in the West Hollywood area.
