Posted Breed: Husky / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). Imagine living the first 3 years of your life under the overpasses of Culver City bike path? Being born there, hot in the summers, cold in the winters, the noise, the smells and the constant fear of not knowing where your next meal would come from and how you would make it to tomorrow. This was little Romeo's reality for THREE long years, until he was captured by Animal Control. Needless to say, he was not exactly the most cooperative pup, and quickly became a candidate for the dreaded needle. Fortunately, one of our Sachi Animal Rescue volunteer happened to be there that day. Whether Romeo knew this was the end of the road for him or not, our volunteer swears his eyes pleaded with her for help. She did not turn away, did not avert his gaze and decided against the advice of Animal Control to take him out. This turned out to be a more difficult task than anticipated, as Romeo had never been touched by humans before and was not about to let this happen. He was as feral as they come, growling, snarling and lunging. Yes, this was going to be a challenging endeavor for SAR. We faced it head on, determined to not let this dog down. Fast forward to today: Romeo is now a well adjusted boy, energetic and loving, who enjoys long hikes and loves to run and play with toys. As a Husky/German Shepherd mix, he seems to have a permanent smile on his face and his expression brightens when he recognizes a familiar face. He is so excited to see some of our volunteers that he will let out a long howl, followed by a quick bark to let them know where he is and that it is time for some much needed one on one cuddling. He has been a remarkable student on every levels. His social skills with both people and dogs are up to par with all our other orphans. From where he started we never expected such an amazing turn around in such a small amount of time. Romeo is once again a reminder for us all, of the incredible spirit dogs can exhibit if only given a chance, of the incredible determination they can show in overcoming the most dire circumstances and odds. Romeo is a winner in our book, and anyone lucky enough to welcome this magnificent boy into their lives would definitely be hitting the jackpot. [BuBu was born in 2003 and about 45 lbs.] If you'd like to meet Bubu, please contact Sachi Animal Rescue: (310) 455-1901 or sachianimalrescue@gmail.com Note: This is a courtesy posting for our fellow rescuer, which means that even though this animal does not belong to our group, we are here to help those who need to find a home for their animals. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). My previous family were busy and had no time for me, so they left me in a horrible place called the pound. It was noisy and scary and I felt overwhelmed. People would come and take other dogs home, but I always got left behind and so I hid in the back of my kennel to get away from the world. I had started to give up and then a nice lady got me out! I jumped with joy and was the happiest boy alive! I am out of there now and ready to put the past behind me. They said in the pound that I was shy with people I do not know, but seriously it takes me seconds to warm up and then I will shower you with the best kisses. I'm a really happy and friendly guy. I have a fair amount of energy and love my walks. I love to play and I love belly rubs. I would be happy to live with or without another dog. But I love, love, love children! I really will light up your life and you have to admit that I have the most adorable face that you have ever seen! Please come and meet me and see how cute I am inside and out! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Shepherd / Mixed. I was adopted as a baby puppy in 2008. I don’t know what happened to my once wonderful family, but they discarded me and moved to Atlanta without telling Forte. Luckily a saint found me on the street and contacted Forte. Thank goodness for the microchip because I was not wearing a tag. When Forte reached out to my original family, the guy who adopted me shouted profanity for no reason, so they could not get any info about what happened to me or when he abandoned me. But that’s ok since I’m in a loving foster home, and I know that there is someone out there who would like to adopt me and love me for the rest of my life. I’m super mellow, loving, playful and best of all, I have a great sense of humor! Please come and meet me! 6 reasons why adopting a senior dog is so rewarding If you are interested in meeting Duke, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. Posted Breed: Maltese / Poodle (Toy) / Mixed (medium coat). Sarah Jessica Parker is a happy go lucky, gentle little girl that has had a long search for a forever home. She was found as a stray and ended up in a local pound and rescued by a rescue group that kept her with a bunch of other dogs. She is an amazing little girl. She loves to go for walks and car rides or just sit in your lap. She gets along with all dogs that she's been introduced to, from small to tall and hasn’t had an issue with any of them. She REALLY deserves a home she can call her own. She is a senior, but her rescuer is not sure how old she is as the pound records are just a guess. She is very active and her age could have been determined by her bad teeth, which isn’t a great indicator of age if a dog has had poor nutrition or been eating table scraps. SJP is ready to find her forever home — ideally one where she is not left alone much, such as a home that has a stay-at-home mom or dad, someone who works from home or can take her to work with them, or someone that needs an emotional support dog/therapy dog. She’s such a loving little girl and will make the perfect companion for anyone looking for a tiny little friend. Posted Breed: Terrier / Papillon / Mixed (medium coat). Hi, I’m Bobby! I was found in the middle of a street by my foster mama who saved me from getting hit by a car. I tried running away for about half an hour, I was really scared and felt lost… until I finally got into her car and she drove me to her house. I was so thirsty. When I got there, I met my foster brother Charlie, the family dog, who I’m ok with but I mostly ignore him because he can be jealous of me, which is understandable. My foster mama went through all legal protocols to find my original home but to no avail, so Forte is helping me to find my forever home. I’m extremely happy, energetic and agile, and I want to be playing around always. I love to play with my human foster sisters; they are so fun to play with. They toss toys for me to catch and retrieve, and I loooove it! I am a very loyal dog, I follow my foster mama around all the time. My foster mama loves to give me kisses on my little nose. I’m protective of my foster family but very gentle. Did I mention I love kids? I have lots of fun playing with them, I’m the happiest being around them. My favorite thing to do so far is going to the park and rolling on the grass, it makes me so happy. I’m looking for a lovely family who will love me as I am and enjoy my active personality. I promise that I will love them forever. If you are interested in meeting Bobby, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I was dumped at the pound by my abuser owner….then got lucky, I was saved. I was in a very bad condition, not long to live but then look at me now, I was given a 2nd chance. I am a very sweet and loving girl, who enjoys her walks, playful and love to give you kisses! I can learn tricks if you have the patience because I already know a few such as; sit, shake, heal around you, then sit again, shake again and I will balance things on my head for you. I love so much to play fetch non-stop with my balls and play in the water hose where I can jump high in the air but be careful…I will chew up your water hose! When I sleep I need to sleep alone where no one sneaks up on me and suddenly awakening me because I was abused at one time, so I need you to always let me know you are there, with NO surprises. I am very good on a leash with healing and staying with my person. I so love being brushed and loved on but I just need that right person who knows, understands and can teach me. Posted Breed: Pug / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). My name is Jack and I admit, I am pretty confused now. My human left me with Forte Animal Rescue because she is having difficulties of her own and can no longer keep me. I know she cares about me which is why she made the decision that I deserved a better home. I am pretty anxious as I figure out my new situation, but I am now living with a nice foster with some canine companions so I should feel safe soon. In fact, I’m already playing nonstop with one of my foster pals. I am really mellow and quiet once I feel secure, and enjoy napping in the sun and taking long walks. I may be a bit standoffish when we first meet, but once we get to know each other, I may shower you with a ton of kisses! I get along fine with small dogs who are not hyper and do well with feline companions. Large dogs may scare me so I have a tendency of yelling at them, but I am working on getting better with this. Before living with my human, I was in the pound so I have gone through this before and do not enjoy being homeless. If you are interested in more mature company and want me to be that companion for the rest of my life, can you contact Forte? If you are interested in meeting Jack, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. Posted Breed: Bull Terrier / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). My foster mom and dad met my previous owner at the Venice Boardwalk. Although his intentions were good by taking me in, he was a young kid who did not know how to care for me properly. I wasn't allowed in the house so they kept me in their car very often so the landlord wouldn't find out about me. Once my foster parents found out how bad my living conditions were, they decided to talk to him about taking me in to find me the right home. The boy agreed and I moved in with my new foster family with other dogs and even cats! They noticed immediately I was very timid and wouldn't even bark. Due to my previous living situation, I was not allowed to make any noise and was always scolded when I barked. My foster parents worked with me until my personality started coming out. Even though I still have my shy moments, I am a completely different dog from when they took me in. I love to play with my foster brothers and sisters, both dogs and cats. I've been introduced to so many new things including very small people (kids) who I try to be very careful and calm around. Sometimes I can be very silly and roll around on the couch with my ball but other times I like to lay on my back and snuggle up on the couch. I am potty-trained and have the willingness to learn from someone who can teach me new tricks. My foster parents tell me all the time how special I am and how much they love me but unfortunately can't keep me. Their goal is to find me the best responsible, loving home for me to grow up in. I want SO badly to find my forever family with people who will love me unconditionally that I can play and cuddle with!
