Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Birthdate (estimated): Hello, I'm Amelia! I am a beautiful, sweet, smart, loyal and loving girl. I hail from the Pine Ridge Reservation and it is believed that I may have been a tribal officer's dog - I heel well, I sit, stay/wait, down, kennel and heel- and if I love and respect you enough I'll listen ;-) I came with a recent head wound, believed to be gunshot, which entered the top of my head and exited through my right eye, leaving me blind in that eye. I am completely healed and have adjusted well to the loss though. I LOVE car rides, I don't care what type of vehicle you have! I just want to be with you and sit looking out the window! I am a VERY energetic girl, and would love a family who will burn off the energy with me. Going for runs, playing fetch in the back yard, etc. An active home will be the best home for me. I will gladly lay quietly with you though, keeping you company. I look forward to finding my forever family, could that be you? Special Requirements: - A fully fenced yard, at least 6' high is a must. I am very athletic, and could easily jump anything shorter to chase after a bunny/squirrel/bird. - I need to be an only animal, as I do not get along with any others. If you are considering me, please understand that social outings will need to be very controlled as I am not a fan of other dogs. - A loving home with medium to high activity level, whether it be going for walks, runs or playing in the backyard. I love to work and play. - Fearful of fireworks, gunshots, etc. So no Fourth of July outings for me. Adoption fee is $125. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Spike DOB: 12/06/07 estimated Weight: 74 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Hello, my name is Spike. My foster mama calls me Spikey, or Big Man. I have been waiting 6 months for a forever home! Everyone says they don't understand why, because I am such a loveable guy. I am so happy to be here! I was pulled from a place called MACC, a local shelter. They were really nice there, but it was a scary place to be. I had an owner but due to unfortunate circumstances he had to give me up, hoping for me to find a better life. I am described as a lover - I love to give and be loved! My favorite things are belly rubs, giving you sloppy kisses, and feeling your touch. My foster mom says my tail is always thumping, and that I am super happy. I don't really like being alone, I prefer to have a human nearby. I like other dogs, too, but we need to go slow. I'm not much of a fan of my kennel. My foster parents leave me out while they are gone, but I am a good boy and I never get into anything or chew anything up. My foster mom says I am so easy to take care of and I have so much love to give! Something to consider with Spike: We have had Spike seen by one of our vets, and he does have a common health problem of a senior dog, Degenerative Joint Disease in his right knee. Spike will need to be on a joint supplement, anti-inflammatory medication, and a fish oil for the rest of his life. The monthly cost will be around $30. Also, like most bully breed dog, Spike does have some food sensitivities and will benefit greatly from staying on a grain free food. I joined Ruff Start Rescue from a local shelter and while I am super happy to be in a home, I am still getting used to the new people, places and sounds. I am looking for a very special family! One who will be patient with me and will help me to overcome my fears. The ideal family for me would have another dog, would have a quiet environment, a fenced in yard, and would continue slow and proper socialization as I come out of my shell. Plus, I just love other dogs. I am very smart when it comes to playing, and have never met a dog that I don't like. My foster mom has been really helpful to me! She is very enthusiastic about my accomplishments and when I bravely conquer one of my fears. When she gets excited, I get excited and we have a big celebration. This has made me proud and more eager to try new things. I am learning to play and trust people. I have gotten more comfortable about approaching her for pets and kisses. I'm even brave enough to snuggle with her at bedtime. I have amazing leash manners, and never pull. I am very in tune with my humans and always know where they are. Could you be the family I've been waiting for? Could I be the dog you've be searching for? If so, I would love to meet you! I think I would do better in a quiet home, maybe with a senior since that is where I am in my own life. I am very food motivated, enjoying snacks and chewies, but I am protective of them and need my space to enjoy them. I am living with other dogs mostly all in my age group and doing well. According to my previous owners, I have a history of seizures, but it hasn't happened for several years. I am crate trained, good car rider, and enjoy going for walks. When it gets cold out, my feet are sensitive and can only be out for short periods of time. I would like to find my forever home, where I can retire on the couch, look out the window, enjoy some snacks, go for a little walk and be your faithful and loving companion. Name: Jezabelle DOB: 07/03/16 estimated Weight: 38 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Jezabelle joined Ruff Start Rescue from a shelter who took her in from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She was with them quite a while, fighting some skin issues. Since she has joined her foster family with Ruff Start, we have had her in to our vets, and her skin is doing a lot better. She has been on medication and will be going in to the vet for an all clear any day now. Jezabelle is a very sweet, loving dog. She loves human attention and craves affection. She is house trained for the most part. She is doing great while on a scheduled, but doesn't quite know how to tell you when she needs to go out just yet. She is also crate trained. Jezabelle is a very smart, fast learner. She already knows how to sit, and she redirects very well when she is doing something naughty, like sniffing the garbage. She does well with other dogs, but is a huge player and will need a dog that is more tolerant to play with. Or she would have no problem just playing with humans as well, she would love to have a kids of her own to run around with :) Jezabelle does okay in the car if she is kenneled. We no longer let her loose in our car as she did get car sick the first time, but she does great when she is kenneled in the car. One of Jezzie's favortie things is to play Tug-O-War, will you be her new tug partner? If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $125. Name: Lilo DOB: 02/17/14 estimated Weight: 45 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 I love watching Rocky Mountain Vet on Animal Planet. I have ears with a personality of their very own. I get along well with adults, older children, and kitties with slow and proper introductions. I would rather not miss out on any opportunity to play with you and my blue sparkle ball! Hi! My name is Lilo and I’m a very smart French Bulldog/Pit Bull gal who is searching for a furever home to call my own. I have a beautiful grey-brown brindle and white coat and my foster mom says I should have been named Radar thanks to my incredible ears! I seriously love play time and helping my foster mom garden in the back yard. I do a really good job of being friendly with the resident feline at my foster home. My foster mom also discovered that I really enjoy being blow dried after my baths. I am crate trained and have a perfect record on being housebroken too. I’ve been working with my foster mom and a trainer on my manners and my foster mom says I’m one of the quickest learners that she’s ever met. She tells me to go to my “room” (my crate) when I come back inside from going potty and I immediately run to my kennel three rooms away (there might just be head pats or treats!). I would love to be adopted into a home with lots of cuddle and play time. Are you my furever home? From the foster mom: Miss Lilo is a very special girl who is learning to trust after a very difficult start to her young life. She was saved by Ruff Start Rescue after being abandoned on the streets of St. Paul. While she is initially fearful of strangers due to her background, she does a great job of meeting new people one on one and will be on her back in minutes for belly rubs if you have her favorite snack – cat treats! When she first arrived, Lilo was scared to let me out of her sight in case I didn’t come back and she would follow me from room to room in my home along with sticking right by me in my backyard. Now, she loves to snuggle on the couch and is also confident enough to wander around my yard and the house. Lilo is barely knee height, but don’t let her petite size fool you. She is a little powerhouse with tons of energy who needs an owner with previous bully or similar breed experience due to her strength and determination. It would be helpful for her owner to also have experience with canine anxiety or be willing to continue to work with her on learning to trust that there are good people out there who will love her. She needs a home with no other dogs due to her reactivity and a house with a standard (non-electrical) fence. She is also a great security monitor and lets me know right away if there is someone in my driveway. She is highly intuitive and very tuned in to her people.. Once Lilo has met you, all she wants is to be by your side. If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. Posted Breed: French Bulldog / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Zeena DOB: 05/04/12 estimated Weight: 35 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Zeena is a gorgeous girl who is eager to please and has tons of love to give! She was found by her foster wandering the streets in pretty rough shape. Since she is so much happier and healthier now, she's so excited about life! Zeena does have a high prey drive and doesn't always do well with small dogs or cats (and is very interested in squirrels/rabbits/etc.). She does have the ability to climb fences (though privacy fences are harder to climb), and has managed to escape her collar/tether multiple times. Zeena will need to be tethered/leashed/fenced WITH supervision because she has the tenancy to chase after things. Zeena is very playful and energetic and would make a good running partner, but needs leash training. She does well with SOME other dogs (she tends to be selective) and really loves to play with them when she finds a dog she can get along well with. I'm not completely sure, but it seems like she does better with male dogs. Because she loves playing so much, she can be vocal, which may sound scary, but it's just her way of being excited! Zeena is crate trained, and knows a few basic commands. This sweet girl has developed some allergies and we are currently trying to find a food that helps with that. She also has some incontinence issues. She does go potty outside, but tends to have accidents inside as well. We've tried several medications for this and she has seen a specialist, but we can't quite pin point the problem. For now, she gets frequent outdoor potty breaks and wears a diaper indoors (or we just clean up as needed). This spitfire of a pup adores a good game of fetch and thoroughly enjoys a few rounds of tug-o-war! She gives the best face kisses you could imagine and absolutely loves to snuggle up into some blankets by her humans after she's been good and tuckered out! Zeena seems to appear larger than she actually is in photos! She's on the smaller side of "medium" and weights just about 35 pounds. Zeena is an incredible girl and will make an amazing companion! Like all of us humans, she's a bit rough around the edges and maybe a little misunderstood. She needs someone who is willing to put in the time and work and be dedicated to her, and in return, she'll give so much love back to you! I’m really glad to be here. The place I grew up in wasn’t very nice because the people I lived with hit me with things, so I’m shy of new people at first, especially new men and kids because I expect them to hurt me. I warmed up to my foster mom right away though and now I love her. My foster dad took the time to show me that not all men are mean by being the designated hotdog guy. I love hotdogs and I’m loving my foster dad now too. He gives the best cuddles! My foster mom says I'm doing a great job meeting new strangers. They keep inviting new people over to meet me so I'm getting really good at it. I'm barely afraid of anyone anymore because they always have food! One time I was so excited to meet a new person that I jumped right into his lap! B ecause of my past, I would like to live in a house without kids but I think it would probably do me good to live with a man, because he could keep working with me to see that there’s nothing to fear anymore. I might never be good with kids though, so probably need a family with no kids or older kids who will respect my boundaries. I would also be best in a home with a fenced yard too, so that I can play and not have to worry about who might approach unexpectedly, so you do not have to worry about me reacting out of fear. I am ok with other dogs and am a very friendly boy but I'd be happy to just live with people too, as my interactions with other dogs can be difficult at times. I currently live in a home with two other dogs, an elderly Italian greyhound mix and a hyper female pitbull, and I love them both, but need to be well supervised with them. My foster mom is still managing our interactions because I am a little too strong for the little dog and I wouldn’t want to accidentally hurt him. Even though I really like the other dogs, I like my foster mom so much more, so I don't always like to share her. Just like a little kid, I'm having to learn how to share and it has been a slow process. I already know "sit", "lay down", "on your bed", and we’re working on learning to like being in the kennel. I whine hoping you’ll let me out, but if you don’t give in I’ll quiet down. I’m very quiet at night though, so I won’t wake you up. I'm told I'm the best in the whole house at waiting nicely for dinner; I will sit and watch you and not touch my food until you say "ok". I do drool while I wait but I just can't help it, I LOVE DINNER! I’m young and boisterous, so I could benefit from some basic training to show me the proper way to behave but my foster family are working on that. They say it's really good that I almost never jump up, and have learned some basic commands, like sit, down, touch and shake. Mostly I just need love and someone willing to give me a few weeks to learn to trust them, and once I trust you, I'm the most loyal friend you'll ever have; I'll follow you everywhere. I love to play fetch in the yard, but I haven’t quite figured out that I’m supposed to bring the ball back yet. I’m kind of a goof and sometimes get so excited to chase the ball that I don’t pay attention to what’s in front of me. I really love being petted, especially belly rubs, and will roll all the way onto my back for them! I also LOVE to chew on bones and un-stuff all the stuffies I'm given! I would love a home of my own where I’d never have to worry about being hurt again. Do you have room in your heart for a gorgeous hunk like me? I joined Ruff Start Rescue from a local shelter. I am so glad to be with my foster family, they are great! I love them, but I secretly have a favorite: the little humans. However, when the man of the house gets home from work, I am just too excited. You know how boxers have their "boxer butt wiggle"? Well, I have my own butt wiggle! My favorite time of day is early evening when I get the "zoomies" and run around the house while the little ones chase me! Oh, it's my favorite game! I like to think that I am smaller than what I really am, and try to join my foster mom on the couch, preferably in her lap... She says I'm a bit too big, but I can sit next to her. Aside from that, I do know my basic commands like sit, stay, wait, lay down. My foster mom makes me sit and wait to eat after she dishes up my food. I am a patient dog! I do prefer having my family all to myself. So, when I'm adopted, can I be your one and only pup? I love my foster family so much, but I am ready for my furever home! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Promise DOB: 10/19/09 estimated Weight: 45 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 My name is Promise and I am practically perfect. My foster family says am such a good girl! I love my 13 yr old foster human and my foster Mom. I also LOVE walks!! I would make a great walking or running partner!!! I like to sleep with you in bed, but I’m also real quiet in my crate. I only bark if someone is at the door or drives into the yard. I am so good outside that my Mom doesn’t even put me on a leash anymore. I don’t wander very far from her and I come immediately when I am called. I am a great listener! There is a grouchy old wiener dog that lives here and I get along with him just fine. There’s a cat here, but she hides 99% of the time so I only see a flash of her every so often. When I do see her, I like to chase her, so I probably would do best in a home without them. I had a tough life before I came here and I am very afraid of new things. Loud or fast movements scare me, so slow introductions to both new humans and animals is a must so I can feel comfortable. Men especially scare me but one has recently moved in here and I have very slowly accepted him. I have decided he is ok and I let him stay! My foster Mom says anyone who gets me is going to be very lucky! If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 280. Name: Remington DOB: 07/09/15 estimated Weight: 46 lbs Adoption Fee: $280 My name is Remington (Remi for short) and I am one smart and handsome dude. I have 2 foster human siblings aged 7 and 8 that I love to play with, only they don’t share their stuffed animals with me (boring). They do like training me, and snuggling with me too. I am playful and adore my bones, rope toys, and I really like to chase balls around the house. I sometimes like to jump up onto tables, but I am easily redirected when corrected. I love to snuggle, and I love getting my belly or ears rubbed. I can easily doze off when my ears are being rubbed! Watch out for my snore though, I can surprise my foster family quite a bit with how loud I get. I like to follow you around the house and be where the action is. I sit/stay very nicely when asked and take treats very gently. I am very friendly when I meet new people – I could use a little more work on proper manners when I greet people who come over – I am so excited to see you I want to jump up and say hello. I don’t bark very much, only if someone is at the door. I am potty trained, and do well in my crate too! I have an elderly dog for a foster sister, and she does not like my puppy antics. I can be a little rough when I want to play with other dogs, so slow introductions would be best. Overall, I am a sweet boy that only needs help learning how to play with other dogs. I am amazing at walking on the leash, unless I see a dog friend. My foster parents have worked hard with me on walking, and my last test to pass is walking past other dogs. Wish me luck! It seems like I had a rough time before I came here; I arrived at the impound underweight with lots of infected puncture wounds on my chest and legs; I am healing well but still have scars. My foster family says I am such a special and loving boy and my new family will be so lucky to have me!
