Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Birthdate (estimated): Hello, I'm Amelia! I am a beautiful, sweet, smart, loyal and loving girl. I hail from the Pine Ridge Reservation and it is believed that I may have been a tribal officer's dog - I heel well, I sit, stay/wait, down, kennel and heel- and if I love and respect you enough I'll listen ;-) I came with a recent head wound, believed to be gunshot, which entered the top of my head and exited through my right eye, leaving me blind in that eye. I am completely healed and have adjusted well to the loss though. I LOVE car rides, I don't care what type of vehicle you have! I just want to be with you and sit looking out the window! I am a VERY energetic girl, and would love a family who will burn off the energy with me. Going for runs, playing fetch in the back yard, etc. An active home will be the best home for me. I will gladly lay quietly with you though, keeping you company. I look forward to finding my forever family, could that be you? Special Requirements: - A fully fenced yard, at least 6' high is a must. I am very athletic, and could easily jump anything shorter to chase after a bunny/squirrel/bird. - I need to be an only animal, as I do not get along with any others. If you are considering me, please understand that social outings will need to be very controlled as I am not a fan of other dogs. - A loving home with medium to high activity level, whether it be going for walks, runs or playing in the backyard. I love to work and play. - Fearful of fireworks, gunshots, etc. So no Fourth of July outings for me. Adoption fee is $125. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Dutch Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). I'm Hawkeye and I am a super fun dog! I was diagnosed with Megaesophagus, which means my esophagus is too big and food pools in there and stretches it out instead of going to my stomach so I was pretty skinny when I came to Ruff Start, but I am now a healthy weight and my esophagus is shrinking! I am a social boy who LOVES to play with other dogs, but I can get kind of rough, so we ARE working on that. I like all people, big and small, but can get pretty rowdy, so little kids might not be best for me. I need an active family with no other pets, or a very laid back canine to play with, with people that will continue to work with me on this. I also need a family who is willing to work with my special Megaesophogus needs, which is just feeding my in my special "Bailey's Chair". I am still working on manners as my medical issues kept me from learning a lot in the beginning, but I ring the bells by the door when I have to go out and I sit for a treat. I am a smart boy who loves to play and chew on dog toys. I'm fast, really fast; I like to run and I like to jump really high, so it's probably best if I have a tall fenced yard too. My fur is so soft it's almost like silk, and I will need regular brushing. I love to play fetch, but may not always want to give up my ball right away, but if allowed to, I will play for hours. I am crate trained too, though I will bark initially when I go inside it, luckily for my people, I settle and get quiet fast. Do you have a place in your heart and home for me? See his local news coverage video: They captured what it's like for him to eat in his upright chair. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2014/11/12/4-month-old-puppy-battles-rare-esophagus-disease/ Adoption fee is $280. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I'm Guinness. If you like small pit bulls, I'm your guy. I'm in the 45 pound range and am super short! I came from a bad background so I am very cautious with new people, and I get anxious if no other dogs are around. I LOVE other dogs, and will need a confident dog my size or larger to be happy. Sometimes I like to play with my foster siblings and sometimes I like to go up and have some alone time in my crate or on a human bed. Once I get to know you I give lots of kisses on your ears and hands, and even your legs if I catch you coming out of the shower! I've been on a couple of very short walks and am pretty observant and obedient on the way out, but once we turn around I pull like crazy because I just want to go home. I will need a family with patience to show me that not all people are mean and to let me come out of my shell slowly and become the loving guy I can be. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, My name is Lilo. I guess you’d like to know a little bit about me! I’m a curious girl. I love to sniff around at things, explore, and investigate My foster mom calls me “energetic,” which I guess is true. But I just love to chase balls, chew on bones and toys, and stay busy. I also love to run and play in the yard. I’m learning how to walk on a leash and everyone thinks I will catch on to that very quickly. I like to give kisses and affection, and I really enjoy a good belly rub! I currently live with a thing my family calls a “cat,” I am very curious about her but leave her alone, mostly because she is cranky and doesn't seem to want to play with me. I like when people come visit, but sometimes I get sooo excited because I’m still learning about manners. Occasionally my enthusiasm is misunderstood so I’m trying to learn to stay calm when I meet people and other dogs. Because I’m silly and happy, I think it’s fun to be the center of attention, but eventually I calm down. I have a kennel where I snooze when my foster family leaves for longer periods of time, but mostly I like to be as close to people as possible. I would really flourish in a single pet household, but I ‘m such a smart little girl that maybe with time and learning manners, I could stay calm around other animals. Everyone that meets me falls in love with me because I am small, have a cute face, and my fur is beautifully colored. I am really looking for a forever family to call my own. Can you help me? Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi there. My name is Ty and I'm a very good boy. Somehow I found myself wandering around the countryside and then getting picked up by animal control. They were real good to me and worked really hard to find Ruff Start Rescue to help save my life. But, it was still a scary place and I'm so happy to be in a home, with a warm bed and a full belly. From the whispers I've heard, I think I was close to being put down. I'm not sure what that means, but it don't sound good. I really like to snuggle with my foster mom and play with my toys outside! The one thing the scares me most is going to the vet. I think I had a bad experience once or something, but I do get really scared and I need a calm and patient human who will understand my "vet-phobia" and help me get through it (but I have seen the vet since being with Ruff Start and I'm doing much better)I am the easiest boy ever my foster mama says. I am so sweet and loving. I will keep her company with my big snuggles until I find my forever family! I'd love to meet you. I'm always happy to be with my people, and looking for place to permanently call home. I love walks! And running! do you like to run? I love to run with my humans. No matter the weather I love to go outside with my people. I'm learning to walk nice on a leash, but I do still pull a little and I get too excited when I see other dogs and sometimes scare them off. I have a lot of energy so I really need to go for walks everyday, and I would like a fenced in yard. I'm really good at home and I don't need to be crated, though I don't mind it. I never chew on shoes or furniture or do anything destructive. I am very choosy about my dog friends. I do well with laid back boy dogs, I don't like girl dogs and I don't really want to live with any, but visits are nice. I know my basic commands and can even high five! But I will need more formal training with my new family. I am learning not to jump up on people who visit me, and because I do my foster mom says I shouldn't live with small children who I might accidentally knock over. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Hi. My name is Audrey. I'm a nine year old Pit Bull looking for my retirement home. I haven't had a very good life so far, I've had lots of puppies and I have a lot of scars on the front of my body. I'm looking for a good loving home to spend my golden years. Since I'm older I like to sleep a lot and I'm pretty mellow, but I do like to go for walks and sometimes I get the zoomies. My foster mom says I'm very affectionate and well behaved. She says that I'm a 60 pound lap dog, but that's not a bad thing. I love to give hugs and kisses and I love to cuddle. I'm also really good at sitting, laying down, shaking your hand, walking on a leash, riding in a car, I take treats gently from your hand and I'm potty trained. My foster mom says I would be "the best dog anybody could ask for" because I just want to be loved and give love. My foster mom really wanted to adopt me but I'm nervous that her resident dogs will eat my food. I've always had to fight for my meals so I don't trust other dogs yet. I need to be in a home where I am the only pet so I don't have to worry about another dog stealing my food. If you are looking for a new best friend please consider fostering or adopting me. My foster mom would love to talk to you about how great I am! Please contact Ruff Start so we can start our life together. I do ok with cats but will chase them. I sleep in a dog bed next to my foster family and in the kennel when they leave. I am house trained but it took me 2 weeks to break me of peeing in the house. I will go on a leash but am extremely nervous if I get pulled. I like to wiggle out and run, then you will never catch me. I don't like when people talk loud and if they do I cower and run. I am very cautious of new people and don't care for kids. So I will need a home with no kids. If given the chance to run around I do come back but this has taken my foster family 2 months of work with me to do this. If you are interested in me please fill out an application!

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Princeton, MN
Posted Breed: Terrier / Schnauzer (short coat). This animal is apart of our "Seniors For Seniors" program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt a pet at a discounted fee. Edith is the sweetest girl! She is her foster mamma's shadow and never wants to be with out her foster mom and dad. Edith loves giving kisses. She's a s hort little lady so when she wants to give you a kiss, but can't get to your face, you'll get a little dog kiss on the leg. Edith has had no accidents and seems fully potty trained. Edy loves to be outside with her foster brother and sister in the fenced yard. I think she will need a fenced yard as she will sometimes not come when her name is called. Edith likes walks, even though she is a little slow, it gives her more time to sniff everything. For an older lady, she has lots of spunk! She has a little barking problem. Edith is a little scared of noises and is barking to warn her foster family. We are working on it now and she is getting much better! Edith is placed in a crate at night, but also loves to sleep in her foster mom and dad's bed. It so comfy! Snuggling and being close is her favorite. When in her crate, she likes to be close to where we are. During the day when her foster mom and dad are at work, she is gated in the kitchen with some water and a nice dog bed and is very content. She has not gotten in to anything or chewed anything. She has been offered chewies but does not seem interested. This little lady has had a rough life but still shows much love to all humans, no matter who they are. There are no cats in our home so I'm not sure how she will be with cats. But Edith loves her foster brother and sister. She is starting to become playful with her foster sister and seems to ignore her foster brother. She is not a chewer nor does she really play with toys. She just loves her humans! Edith also likes human food. We are working on her manners and has jumped up on our coffee table to grab a bite of food. Again, we are working on her manners. Edith would be great in a home where she could receive lots of love and attention. A home that enjoys walks and being outside in the nice fresh air. We have discovered that she does have seizures but they are kept under control with medication. Her medication is about $30 a month and she will require quarterly vet appointments for blood draws in order to renew her medication. Other then that she is very healthy!

      Breed: Australian Shepherd-Unknown Mix

      Location: Princeton, MN
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Welcome to the world of The Texas Five! My name is Shannon and I will be your guide through this wonderful adventure. Our tour begins in Texas at a gigantic shelter. The puppies were brought in by the authorities when they were found in horrendous living conditions, flea infested, covered in mange and emaciated. Rather than face charges, the owners were kind enough to surrender them immediately. The shelter staff went to work, giving them food and flea preventative. Volunteers pitched in, thus introducing them to human kindness. Shelter life is very hard on animals so the staff started networking. And that is how they became known on the other side of our country. A coordinator at Ruff Start saw a picture of these five puppies and posted it on her personal Facebook page where I saw it. Without a second thought, I asked if she could get these puppies to me. Now getting these puppies back to Minnesota is no small feat and their time was limited. Their medical conditions were quite serious and made worse by the stress of shelter life. As hard as the staff worked, it soon became clear that without a rescue commitment, this group of puppies would have to be put down to make room for the additional 50 plus animals that enter this shelter every single day. My coordinator and her husband dropped everything and drove to Texas and back. They left on a Friday and came back on Sunday. We call that a turn and burn. Though they had baths in the shelter, the mange had wreaked havoc with their skin and the smell was overwhelming. Once they arrived in Minnesota, they received medication for that. It took a few days before they could get a bath because their skin was so oozy and delicate. Rehabilitating emaciated puppies involves more than just getting them food. All the puppies have been fed 6 or more times a day with very small, nutrient dense food from Sojos. Some of the puppies were too ill and dehydrated to eat or drink so every drop of food that I could get into them had to count. I also gave them fluids under their skin to help combat their dehydration. It was hard to see the combined look of mistrust and hope in their eyes when they first came. They shied away from touch while at the same time furiously wagging their tail in the hope that they could get some love. And that is when we got a message from someone in Texas that the mother was still in the shelter. In my head, I heard the sound of the record player needle dragging across the record. My amazing coordinator went to work and within days, Mama (named Scout) was hitching a ride up to Minnesota. Though she arrived scared and worn out, the reunion was everything we could have hoped for. Every last pup came back to life and the yard was full of wagging tails. Once they all got settled in the house, Mama cuddled up to her babies and they took a nap with doggy smiles on their faces. And that was the turning point. Now, we work on building their immune system with healthy food and a steady supply of love. And it works wonders. Steel and Harry were touch and go for more than a week. It has been magical to see them turn the corner and head toward health. I had to lift them up and carry them where I needed them to go: outside to go potty, back inside, to their food and water, to a fresh bed so I could wash blankets. The day each puppy got his/her go back is shown in pictures on their Facebook page: The Texas 5. Feel free to visit this page and see the transformation. Scout (Mama), Big Red, Fluffy, Shaggy Girl, Harry and Steele will be getting ready to go to their forever homes before too long. They will need to put on some more weight and build their strength before they can be spayed and neutered. After this happens, they will be ready to adopt a human family of their own. Adopters don't have to wait to meet them though. In fact, I encourage anyone that is seriously considering adoption to start the paperwork and come meet these unfurry guys in Hastings. Everyone can benefit from puppy love. If you are a human looking to be adopted and loved by one of these fur babies, please fill out an application with Ruff Start Rescue.
