Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Birthdate (estimated): Hello, I'm Amelia! I am a beautiful, sweet, smart, loyal and loving girl. I hail from the Pine Ridge Reservation and it is believed that I may have been a tribal officer's dog - I heel well, I sit, stay/wait, down, kennel and heel- and if I love and respect you enough I'll listen ;-) I came with a recent head wound, believed to be gunshot, which entered the top of my head and exited through my right eye, leaving me blind in that eye. I am completely healed and have adjusted well to the loss though. I LOVE car rides, I don't care what type of vehicle you have! I just want to be with you and sit looking out the window! I am a VERY energetic girl, and would love a family who will burn off the energy with me. Going for runs, playing fetch in the back yard, etc. An active home will be the best home for me. I will gladly lay quietly with you though, keeping you company. I look forward to finding my forever family, could that be you? Special Requirements: - A fully fenced yard, at least 6' high is a must. I am very athletic, and could easily jump anything shorter to chase after a bunny/squirrel/bird. - I need to be an only animal, as I do not get along with any others. If you are considering me, please understand that social outings will need to be very controlled as I am not a fan of other dogs. - A loving home with medium to high activity level, whether it be going for walks, runs or playing in the backyard. I love to work and play. - Fearful of fireworks, gunshots, etc. So no Fourth of July outings for me. Adoption fee is $125. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Princeton, MN
Posted Breed: Dutch Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). I'm Hawkeye and I am a super fun dog! I was diagnosed with Megaesophagus, which means my esophagus is too big and food can pool in there and stretch it out instead of going to my stomach, so I was pretty skinny when I first came to Ruff Start, but I am now a healthy weight and my esophagus is shrinking! I am a social boy who LOVES to play with other dogs, but I can get kind of rough, so we ARE working on that. I like all people, big and small, but can get pretty rowdy, so little kids might not be best for me. I need an active family with no other pets, or a very laid back canine to play with, with people that will continue to work with me on this, but no cats please! I also need a family who is willing to work with my special Megaesophogus needs, which is just feeding my in my special "Bailey's Chair". I eat regular food, from a regular dish, so nothing difficult there, and I get in on my own and await my kibble like a good boy. I do need my water bowl elevated off the floor a bit, but again, nothing too difficult. I am still working on my doggie manners, as my medical issues kept me from learning a lot in the beginning, but I ring the bells by the door when I have to go out and I sit for a treat. I am a smart boy who loves to play and chew on dog toys. I'm fast, really fast; I like to run and I like to jump really high, so it's probably best if I have a tall fenced yard too. My fur is so soft it's almost like silk, and I will need regular brushing to be kept this glamorous. I love to play fetch, but may not always want to give up my ball right away, but if allowed to, I will play for hours. I am crate trained too, though I will bark initially when I go inside it, luckily for my people, I settle and get quiet fast. Do you have a place in your heart and home for me? See his local news coverage video: They captured what it's like for him to eat in his upright chair. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2014/11/12/4-month-old-puppy-battles-rare-esophagus-disease/ Adoption fee is $280. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Hi. My name is Audrey. I'm a nine year old Pit Bull looking for my retirement home. I haven't had a very good life so far, I've had lots of puppies and I have a lot of scars on the front of my body. I'm looking for a good loving home to spend my golden years. Since I'm older I like to sleep a lot and I'm pretty mellow, but I do like to go for walks and sometimes I get the zoomies. My foster mom says I'm very affectionate and well behaved. She says that I'm a 60 pound lap dog, but that's not a bad thing. I love to give hugs and kisses and I love to cuddle. I'm also really good at sitting, laying down, shaking your hand, walking on a leash, riding in a car, I take treats gently from your hand and I'm potty trained. My foster mom says I would be "the best dog anybody could ask for" because I just want to be loved and give love. My foster mom really wanted to adopt me but I'm nervous that her resident dogs will eat my food. I've always had to fight for my meals so I don't trust other dogs yet. I need to be in a home where I am the only pet so I don't have to worry about another dog stealing my food. If you are looking for a new best friend please consider fostering or adopting me. My foster mom would love to talk to you about how great I am! Please contact Ruff Start so we can start our life together. Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Hello, my name is Zelda. I am a very sweet and affectionate girl, who very much enjoys being close to my humans. I'm also very smart, and eager to please. I am well trained and know basic commands such as sit, come, down, wait. I'm also kennel trained, although I am a really good girl and do not need to be kenneled. I love playing with dogs and toys! But most of all, I love being with my people! I will require a family with a fenced in yard. Because of my breed, I am much more inclined to follow a scent and I very much enjoy being outside. A fenced in yard will allow me to enjoy the outdoors while staying safe. I would love a family of my own - one who will spoil me and love me forever! Could that be you? Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Rita cannot be in a home with cats or dogs. My name is Rita and I'm always smiling. I love people! I'm always happy to be with my people, and looking for place to permanently call home. I love walks! And running! do you like to run? I love to run with my humans. No matter the weather I love to go outside with my people. I'm learning to walk nice on a leash, but I do still pull a little and I get too excited when I see other dogs and sometimes scare them off. I have a lot of energy so I really need to go for walks everyday, and I would like a fenced in yard. I'm really good at home and I don't need to be crated, though I don't mind it. I never chew on shoes or furniture or do anything destructive. I am very choosy about my dog friends. I do well with laid back boy dogs, I don't like girl dogs and I don't really want to live with any, but visits are nice. I know my basic commands and can even high five! But I will need more formal training with my new family. I am learning not to jump up on people who visit me, and because I do my foster mom says I shouldn't live with small children who I might accidentally knock over. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi there. My name is Ty and I'm a very good boy. Somehow I found myself wandering around the countryside and then getting picked up by animal control. They were real good to me and worked really hard to find Ruff Start Rescue to help save my life. But, it was still a scary place and I'm so happy to be in a home, with a warm bed and a full belly. From the whispers I've heard, I think I was close to being put down. I'm not sure what that means, but it don't sound good. I really like to snuggle with my foster mom and play with my toys outside! The one thing the scares me most is going to the vet. I think I had a bad experience once or something, but I do get really scared and I need a calm and patient human who will understand my "vet-phobia" and help me get through it (but I have seen the vet since being with Ruff Start and I'm doing much better)I am the easiest boy ever my foster mama says. I am so sweet and loving. I will keep her company with my big snuggles until I find my forever family! I'd love to meet you. I do ok with cats but will chase them. I sleep in a dog bed next to my foster family and in the kennel when they leave. I am house trained but it took me 2 weeks to break me of peeing in the house. I will go on a leash but am extremely nervous if I get pulled. I like to wiggle out and run, then you will never catch me. I don't like when people talk loud and if they do I cower and run. I am very cautious of new people and don't care for kids. So I will need a home with no kids. If given the chance to run around I do come back but this has taken my foster family 2 months of work with me to do this. If you are interested in me please fill out an application!

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, My name is Lilo. I guess you’d like to know a little bit about me! I’m a curious girl. I love to sniff around at things, explore, and investigate My foster mom calls me “energetic,” which I guess is true. But I just love to chase balls, chew on bones and toys, and stay busy. I also love to run and play in the yard. I’m learning how to walk on a leash and everyone thinks I will catch on to that very quickly. I like to give kisses and affection, and I really enjoy a good belly rub! I currently live with a thing my family calls a “cat,” I am very curious about her but leave her alone, mostly because she is cranky and doesn't seem to want to play with me. I like when people come visit, but sometimes I get sooo excited because I’m still learning about manners. Occasionally my enthusiasm is misunderstood so I’m trying to learn to stay calm when I meet people and other dogs. Because I’m silly and happy, I think it’s fun to be the center of attention, but eventually I calm down. I have a kennel where I snooze when my foster family leaves for longer periods of time, but mostly I like to be as close to people as possible. I would really flourish in a single pet household, but I ‘m such a smart little girl that maybe with time and learning manners, I could stay calm around other animals. Everyone that meets me falls in love with me because I am small, have a cute face, and my fur is beautifully colored. I am really looking for a forever family to call my own. Can you help me? Posted Breed: Bloodhound / Mixed (short coat). Hi I'm Boomier! I am a fun, snuggly, and silly boy! I love to play fetch and smell all the great smells in the yard! I am looking for my forever family. Since I love to smell, I follow my nose and would be best in a home with a fully fenced yard so I can run, play, and smell without worry. It takes me a little bit to warm up to other dogs, but I have loved playing with my foster brothers! I don't really like little dogs, but the big ones- I like. I shouldn't live with a cat either, since I love to follow my nose, and I love to chase them any chance I get. There are times I am too tired or done playing and I will let you or the other dogs know by growling. I just like my space some times, so please make sure I am supervised at all times with little kids. I love, love, LOVE peanut butter Kongs, playing fetch, and snuggling and giving kisses to my humans! I also don't howl much at all, just when someone new is coming to the house. I am potty and crate trained, but I do best in the kennel if I have something to distract me when you leave. I sleep on my own bed at night at the foot of the bed. I am a smart boy too! I know by basic commands, but my foster parents are working with me to learn them even better! I do need to learn that the counters are not a place for me, even through there are some good smells (and sometimes food!) for me to go after. If you think you can give me a loving home for this silly, goofy, sweet hound, send in an app! I would love to meet you! - Boomier Submit an Adoption Application * All animals are in foster homes located throughout the Twin Cities & Central Minnesota. We do not have a facility. *

Posted Breed: French Bulldog / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Zeena is a gorgeous girl who is eager to please and has tons of love to give! She was found by her foster wandering the streets in pretty rough shape. Since she is so much happier and healthier now, she's so excited about life! Zeena does have a high prey drive and doesn't always do well with small dogs or cats (and is very interested in squirrels/rabbits/etc.). She does have the ability to climb fences (though privacy fences are harder to climb). Zeena will need to be tethered/leashed/fenced with supervision because she has the tenancy to chase after things. Zeena is very playful and energetic and would make a good running partner, but needs some leash training. She does well with other dogs her size or larger and just loves to play! Because she loves playing so much, she can be vocal, which may sound scary, but it's just her way of being excited! Zeena is crate trained, house trained and knows a few basic commands. Zeena is an incredible girl and will make an amazing companion! Like all of us humans, she's a bit rough around the edges and maybe a little misunderstood. She needs someone who is willing to put in the time and work and be dedicated to her, and in return, she'll give so much love back to you! PS. I may look big in these photos, but I am just a small, cutie patootie! Submit an Adoption Application * All animals are in foster homes located throughout the Twin Cities & Central Minnesota. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I'm Guinness. If you like small pit bulls, I'm your guy. I'm in the 45 pound range and am super short! I came from a bad background so I am very cautious with new people, and I get anxious if no other dogs are around. I LOVE other dogs, and will need a confident dog my size or larger to be happy. Sometimes I like to play with my foster siblings and sometimes I like to go up and have some alone time in my crate or on a human bed. Once I get to know you I give lots of kisses on your ears and hands, and even your legs if I catch you coming out of the shower! I've been on a couple of very short walks and am pretty observant and obedient on the way out, but once we turn around I pull like crazy because I just want to go home. I will need a family with patience to show me that not all people are mean and to let me come out of my shell slowly and become the loving guy I can be.
