Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Birthdate (estimated): Hello, I'm Amelia! I am a beautiful, sweet, smart, loyal and loving girl. I hail from the Pine Ridge Reservation and it is believed that I may have been a tribal officer's dog - I heel well, I sit, stay/wait, down, kennel and heel- and if I love and respect you enough I'll listen ;-) I came with a recent head wound, believed to be gunshot, which entered the top of my head and exited through my right eye, leaving me blind in that eye. I am completely healed and have adjusted well to the loss though. I LOVE car rides, I don't care what type of vehicle you have! I just want to be with you and sit looking out the window! I am a VERY energetic girl, and would love a family who will burn off the energy with me. Going for runs, playing fetch in the back yard, etc. An active home will be the best home for me. I will gladly lay quietly with you though, keeping you company. I look forward to finding my forever family, could that be you? Special Requirements: - A fully fenced yard, at least 6' high is a must. I am very athletic, and could easily jump anything shorter to chase after a bunny/squirrel/bird. - I need to be an only animal, as I do not get along with any others. If you are considering me, please understand that social outings will need to be very controlled as I am not a fan of other dogs. - A loving home with medium to high activity level, whether it be going for walks, runs or playing in the backyard. I love to work and play. - Fearful of fireworks, gunshots, etc. So no Fourth of July outings for me. Adoption fee is $125. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Hi. My name is Audrey. I'm a nine year old Pit Bull looking for my retirement home. I haven't had a very good life so far, I've had lots of puppies and I have a lot of scars on the front of my body. I'm looking for a good loving home to spend my golden years. Since I'm older I like to sleep a lot and I'm pretty mellow, but I do like to go for walks and sometimes I get the zoomies. My foster mom says I'm very affectionate and well behaved. She says that I'm a 60 pound lap dog, but that's not a bad thing. I love to give hugs and kisses and I love to cuddle. I'm also really good at sitting, laying down, shaking your hand, walking on a leash, riding in a car, I take treats gently from your hand and I'm potty trained. My foster mom says I would be "the best dog anybody could ask for" because I just want to be loved and give love. My foster mom really wanted to adopt me but I'm nervous that her resident dogs will eat my food. I've always had to fight for my meals so I don't trust other dogs yet. I need to be in a home where I am the only pet so I don't have to worry about another dog stealing my food. If you are looking for a new best friend please consider fostering or adopting me. My foster mom would love to talk to you about how great I am! Please contact Ruff Start so we can start our life together. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, My name is Lilo. I guess you’d like to know a little bit about me! I’m a curious girl. I love to sniff around at things, explore, and investigate My foster mom calls me “energetic,” which I guess is true. But I just love to chase balls, chew on bones and toys, and stay busy. I also love to run and play in the yard. I’m learning how to walk on a leash and everyone thinks I will catch on to that very quickly. I like to give kisses and affection, and I really enjoy a good belly rub! I currently live with a thing my family calls a “cat,” I am very curious about her but leave her alone, mostly because she is cranky and doesn't seem to want to play with me. I like when people come visit, but sometimes I get sooo excited because I’m still learning about manners. Occasionally my enthusiasm is misunderstood so I’m trying to learn to stay calm when I meet people and other dogs. Because I’m silly and happy, I think it’s fun to be the center of attention, but eventually I calm down. I have a kennel where I snooze when my foster family leaves for longer periods of time, but mostly I like to be as close to people as possible. I would really flourish in a single pet household, but I ‘m such a smart little girl that maybe with time and learning manners, I could stay calm around other animals. Everyone that meets me falls in love with me because I am small, have a cute face, and my fur is beautifully colored. I am really looking for a forever family to call my own. Can you help me? Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Rita must be the only animal in her home want to!! I am like the happiest, funniest, silliest dog that you will ever want to meet!! Well, that's what my foster family says about me anyway. I am adorable - just look at those pictures - seriously, do they come any cuter than me? You know what I love most? YOU! I just LOVE people. I love to be around them, and play with them. But you should also know that when I get a bit amped up, I tend to get a little mouthy. My poor foster mom, dad and sisters (all humans) are working with me on this, it's so hard, but I'm learning!! So even though I love children, my foster family thinks that I probably would be best in a home with older dog savvy kids. I LOVE to go for walks and get this - my foster mom says that I would be the BEST running partner, something about wearing off my energy....... and my foster family says that I do pretty darn well on a leash, I try, I really really try. Here's the but.......my foster mom tells me that I am inappropriate around other dogs. I get so excited around them I tend to jump and bark, often scaring them away or worse. I am selective about my dog friends and don't like females at all, I like laid back males to play with. I prefer to be the only animal in the house. We won't mention the things my foster family calls cats. I see them as rabbits, squirrels and all those other little critters I see running around outside. I am fully house and crate trained, but I'm not destructive at all. My foster mom hasn't kenneled me in 2 months. I have never chewed a shoe, or pillow, or anything! Go ahead and put in an application to adopt me, you know you want to!! Submit an Adoption Application * All animals are in foster homes located throughout the Twin Cities & Central Minnesota. Location: Princeton, MN
Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I'm Ariel, a sweet 2 year old girl that was transported from a scary shelter many months ago with my cute litter of puppies. I ended up here in a Minnesota shelter where I watched my babies get adopted one by one, and I hoped so much that I would find a forever home too...but I guess no one wanted me. While I sat waiting, I was treated for something called "heartworm" and although I wanted to play and run around, I had to stay very quiet so that the medicine could do its work. I feel wonderful now but it was hard not being able to play at all back then. Right now, I'm living with a foster dad who is taking very good care of me, and I just love playing with my foster brother and a few other dogs I’ve met. There have been a few dogs in my life that I haven’t liked very much because they make me kind of nervous, but I’m learning that I don’t need to be afraid anymore because my people will keep me safe I need a foster or foster-to-adopt home that maybe doesn't have other dogs or that would be willing to introduce me to a larger, calm resident dog very slowly. I also think it's exciting to chase cats so I should be in a home without one. Since I have been with my foster family, I have learned to potty outside, I'm very quiet in my crate, I know sit, and am a good girl on walks but get distracted by squirrels and rabbits sometimes. I love, love, love toys and like nothing better that to throw them around or just lay on my back with one and squiggle around on a soft floor. I also love big and small people so much (especially men!) and just want to be near them so I can feel safe and happy. I really, really, really like to chase bunnies so a fenced yard would be AWESOME for keeping me safe with my family. Note: Before I joined Ruff Start Rescue, I was treated for heartworm. Because of this, I’m in RSR’s “Foster to Adopt” progam. This means that I can still join my forever family right away, then be “officially” adopted when my heartworm retest comes back negative in a few months. I look and feel perfectly normal! And don’t worry! Heartworm is not contagious! Ruff Start Rescue just wants to make sure I’m happy and healthy and will take care of costs associated with the retest so my forever family doesn’t have to worry about that. I will be retested in January and after that is when I should be able to be “officially” part of a family.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Schnauzer / Mixed (short coat). Hi my name is Markie, but my foster Momma calls me Scruff. I am great with other dogs and will need a companion. I do ok with cats but will chase them. I sleep in a dog bed next to my foster family and in the kennel when they leave. I am house trained but it took me 2 weeks to break me of peeing in the house. I will go on a leash but am extremely nervous if I get pulled. I like to wiggle out and run, then you will never catch me. I don't like when people talk loud and if they do I cower and run. I am very cautious of new people and don't care for kids. So I will need a home with no kids. If given the chance to run around I do come back but this has taken my foster family 2 months of work with me to do this. If you are interested in me please fill out an application!

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Princeton, MN
Posted Breed: Terrier / Schnauzer (short coat). This animal is apart of our "Seniors For Seniors" program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt a pet at a discounted fee. Edith is the sweetest girl! She is her foster mamma's shadow and never wants to be with out her foster mom and dad. Edith loves giving kisses. She's a s hort little lady so when she wants to give you a kiss, but can't get to your face, you'll get a little dog kiss on the leg. Edith has had no accidents and seems fully potty trained. Edy loves to be outside with her foster brother and sister in the fenced yard. I think she will need a fenced yard as she will sometimes not come when her name is called. Edith likes walks, even though she is a little slow, it gives her more time to sniff everything. For an older lady, she has lots of spunk! She has a little barking problem. Edith is a little scared of noises and is barking to warn her foster family. We are working on it now and she is getting much better! Edith is placed in a crate at night, but also loves to sleep in her foster mom and dad's bed. It so comfy! Snuggling and being close is her favorite. When in her crate, she likes to be close to where we are. During the day when her foster mom and dad are at work, she is gated in the kitchen with some water and a nice dog bed and is very content. She has not gotten in to anything or chewed anything. She has been offered chewies but does not seem interested. This little lady has had a rough life but still shows much love to all humans, no matter who they are. There are no cats in our home so I'm not sure how she will be with cats. But Edith loves her foster brother and sister. She is starting to become playful with her foster sister and seems to ignore her foster brother. She is not a chewer nor does she really play with toys. She just loves her humans! Edith also likes human food. We are working on her manners and has jumped up on our coffee table to grab a bite of food. Again, we are working on her manners. Edith would be great in a home where she could receive lots of love and attention. A home that enjoys walks and being outside in the nice fresh air. We have discovered that she does have seizures but they are kept under control with medication. Her medication is about $30 a month and she will require quarterly vet appointments for blood draws in order to renew her medication. Other then that she is very healthy!

A few things about myself; I am an affectionate goofy handsome boy that has golden eyes. I love all humans but I especially love men! I walk nicely on a leash and I am easy to put in my kennel. I know these commands...sit, wait, come, with me, leave it, drop it, all done, off and we are working on down. I am very selective of other dogs and I do not like cats or other small critters. My ideal gig is for me to be an only dog. I promise to love you and kiss you...who are we kidding; I will stalk you because I love my people that much. If I sound as amazing to you as I do to myself, please adopt me. More about Gamo: Good with kids, Good with adults, Loves men, Quiet, Leash trained, Kennel trained, House broken, Requires a yard, Very dog selective/borderline not good with other dogs, Not good with cats.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I'm Guinness. If you like small pit bulls, I'm your guy. I'm in the 45 pound range and am super short! I came from a bad background so I am very cautious with new people, and I get anxious if no other dogs are around. I LOVE other dogs, and will need a confident dog my size or larger to be happy. Sometimes I like to play with my foster siblings and sometimes I like to go up and have some alone time in my crate or on a human bed. Once I get to know you I give lots of kisses on your ears and hands, and even your legs if I catch you coming out of the shower! I've been on a couple of very short walks and am pretty observant and obedient on the way out, but once we turn around I pull like crazy because I just want to go home. I will need a family with patience to show me that not all people are mean and to let me come out of my shell slowly and become the loving guy I can be. Somehow I found myself wandering around the countryside and then getting picked up by animal control. They were real good to me and worked really hard to find Ruff Start Rescue to help save my life. But, it was still a scary place and I'm so happy to be in a home, with a warm bed and a full belly. From the whispers I've heard, I think I was close to being put down. I'm not sure what that means, but it don't sound good. I really like to snuggle with my foster mom and play with my toys outside! The one thing the scares me most is going to the vet. I think I had a bad experience once or something, but I do get really scared and I need a calm and patient human who will understand my "vet-phobia" and help me get through it (but I have seen the vet since being with Ruff Start and I'm doing much better)I am the easiest boy ever my foster mama says. I am so sweet and loving. I will keep her company with my big snuggles until I find my forever family! I'd love to meet you.
