Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Birthdate (estimated): Hello, I'm Amelia! I am a beautiful, sweet, smart, loyal and loving girl. I hail from the Pine Ridge Reservation and it is believed that I may have been a tribal officer's dog - I heel well, I sit, stay/wait, down, kennel and heel- and if I love and respect you enough I'll listen ;-) I came with a recent head wound, believed to be gunshot, which entered the top of my head and exited through my right eye, leaving me blind in that eye. I am completely healed and have adjusted well to the loss though. I LOVE car rides, I don't care what type of vehicle you have! I just want to be with you and sit looking out the window! I am a VERY energetic girl, and would love a family who will burn off the energy with me. Going for runs, playing fetch in the back yard, etc. An active home will be the best home for me. I will gladly lay quietly with you though, keeping you company. I look forward to finding my forever family, could that be you? Special Requirements: - A fully fenced yard, at least 6' high is a must. I am very athletic, and could easily jump anything shorter to chase after a bunny/squirrel/bird. - I need to be an only animal, as I do not get along with any others. If you are considering me, please understand that social outings will need to be very controlled as I am not a fan of other dogs. - A loving home with medium to high activity level, whether it be going for walks, runs or playing in the backyard. I love to work and play. - Fearful of fireworks, gunshots, etc. So no Fourth of July outings for me. Adoption fee is $125. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / American Bulldog / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Rocket DOB: 03/07/15 estimated Weight: 46 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Have you ever seen a cuter noodle? My name is Rocket and my ears are as big as my heart! My papers say I am a German Shepherd, American Bulldog cross although my foster Mom is pretty sure I could be a whole mess of different things. I love playing in the snow, running, fetching balls, and tugging rope! I am hoping to find someone who wants to play and run with me. I've had a few families who got me and realized they didn't like playing as much as I did, but my Foster Mom says my next family will love everything about me. After having so many homes, I ended up in a shelter for 6 months. The director always called me a good boy and would get all teary eyed when she looked in my kennel. All the volunteers had a soft spot for me however, the shelter was loud and I didn't get to stretch my legs for very long. It was making me sad, so I stopped eating and didn't like playing with my kennel mates anymore. When my foster Mom came to get me she realized how despondent I had become since I didn't want to share my food and I would cry if she left me alone. Now that I'm out, I'm trying to get back into the groove of being in a family but it can be hard sometimes. I don't like when people get loud around me or fight, when my other families did that I had to go away. I also get very over excited when I see other dogs, it takes me a little while to realize they want to be my friend. Walking on a leash can be kind of hard for me, because I love being outside so much I just want to explore everything! I really want to stay with my new family forever so I hope they understand I am a smart boy who can work through anything with enough time and devotion. I hope to have a family with a yard who is willing to go outside and play with me for lots of time each day. I love kids who are bigger than me because that way we can clown around, my style of play is just like a real German Shepherd so I use my paws while also tossing my whole body around. My foster Mom calls me Noodle, I don't know. Can my new family like balls, too maybe? Golly, and squirrels? If my new family has another calm dog who they would be willing to let me get to know that would be awesome too. I have two foster siblings I play with all the time, so I would like a playmate in my forever home. Oh, squeaky toys are the best too! I can do lots of tricks for some yummy treats and I love cuddling with my family when the day comes to a close. I'm trying really hard to remember all my manners, slowly but surely they're coming back. Do you have room for a big noodle like me? If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal. I joined Ruff Start Rescue from a local family who saved me from a rough situation. I spent most of my life tied outside with very little interaction. I was pretty malnourished. The family who saved me cared greatly for me and were so happy they were able to help me find rescue. I love to get attention from my foster family and just like to follow them around and be where ever they are. In my foster home there is a cat, several other dogs and a kid! I get along with everyone. I am happiest to lay on the couch with you and watch a show. I love car rides and love them even more if you let me stick my head out the window. I sometimes get anxious when I hear loud noises (storms, big trucks, motorcycles, etc.). I will whimper or bay when I am afraid (and I can bay pretty loudly). I'm smart, eager to please and extremely food motivated so training comes easy. I've mastered sit and shake. I know come as well, but sometimes I listen to my nose more than my ears. I do have some allergies, but my foster family did a great job of identifying the cause and getting them under control. With a specific food I have no issues! I would make a great family dog and can't wait to find my forever family! Submit an Adoption Application * All animals are in foster homes located throughout the Twin Cities & Central Minnesota. Posted Breed: Bloodhound / Coonhound / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Lucy DOB: 09/27/14 estimated Weight: 76 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Hello, my name is Lucy, my foster mom says I am a big girl! I weigh about 76lbs, my people think I am a bloodhound/ coonhound mix. I was a stray at a local impound where I sat for 5 months waiting for a home! Luckily, Ruff Start Rescue stepped up to take me so I could continue my search for a forever home while being in a home! I have a lot of energy and love to play! I get along with other dogs with proper introductions. I can be growly at first especially if I am on my leash. I live with other dogs big and small at home. I have a very high prey drive and mom says I can be a little obsessive about chasing small critters if I see them. I have caught a bird flying which I thought was great but mom said was naughty. so I need to be kept away from small critters and cats! I am also all hound so my nose tends to get the best of me. If I smell something I like that I want to find out more about I do my darndest to find that smell, which could get me into some trouble if my people are not super careful. Due to my prey drive and my love to follow my nose I do need a furever home with a fenced in yard, for my safety! This is a requirement for my family. Mom says it has to be a physical fence and not an electric fence as she does not think the electric fence would work for me. I do not live with any kids right now but older children my people think would be just fine. I am a big girl so I might knock kids over and when I play I like to mouth even though its very gentle it may not go well with younger kids. I can also be moody at times when in my kennel or when someone tries to cuddle with me when I want my own time/space. However most the time I am super cuddly. I sleep in a kennel at night and when my family is away, I do well in there and even go in on command, however I do let my parents know with some hound howls when I do not want to be in there. I go potty outside like a good girl but sometimes hold it so long that I go inside, that doesn't happen very often and as long as I get out as much as I need to it should not be a problem. I enjoy going for walks and walk well if I am wearing a gentle leader, if I am not wearing one I will pull you all over so I can sniff all the smells. Because of my few quirks I should have an experienced owner who can be patient with me. I am a great listener when you are able to get my attention but my attention is usually on the squirrel two houses down and not on mom and dad. If you don't mind a little drool, have no kitties/small critters, and you are an experienced dog owner with a fenced in yard, and don't mind a 76lbs doggy on your lap I may be your girl. Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Kojo DOB: 01/06/16 estimated Weight: 52 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Hello, my name is Kojo! I’m really glad to be here. The place I grew up in wasn’t very nice because the people I lived with hit me with things, so I’m shy of new people at first, especially new men and kids because I expect them to hurt me. I warmed up to my foster mom right away though and now I love her. My foster dad took the time to show me that not all men are mean by being the designated hotdog guy. I love hotdogs and I’m loving my foster dad now too. He gives the best cuddles! My foster mom says I'm doing a great job meeting new strangers. They keep inviting new people over to meet me so I'm getting really good at it. I'm barely afraid of anyone anymore because they always have food! One time I was so excited to meet a new person that I jumped right into his lap! B ecause of my past, I would like to live in a house without kids but I think it would probably do me good to live with a man, because he could keep working with me to see that there’s nothing to fear anymore. I might never be good with kids though, so probably need a family with no kids or older kids who will respect my boundaries. I would also be best in a home with a fenced yard too, so that I can play and not have to worry about who might approach unexpectedly, so you do not have to worry about me reacting out of fear. I am ok with other dogs and am a very friendly boy but I'd be happy to just live with people too, as my interactions with other dogs can be difficult at times. I currently live in a home with two other dogs, an elderly Italian greyhound mix and a hyper female pitbull, and I love them both, but need to be well supervised with them. My foster mom is still managing our interactions because I am a little too strong for the little dog and I wouldn’t want to accidentally hurt him. Even though I really like the other dogs, I like my foster mom so much more, so I don't always like to share her. Just like a little kid, I'm having to learn how to share and it has been a slow process. I already know "sit", "lay down", "on your bed", and we’re working on learning to like being in the kennel. I whine hoping you’ll let me out, but if you don’t give in I’ll quiet down. I’m very quiet at night though, so I won’t wake you up. I'm told I'm the best in the whole house at waiting nicely for dinner; I will sit and watch you and not touch my food until you say "ok". I do drool while I wait but I just can't help it, I LOVE DINNER! I’m young and boisterous, so I could benefit from some basic training to show me the proper way to behave but my foster family are working on that. They say it's really good that I almost never jump up, and have learned some basic commands, like sit, down, touch and shake. Mostly I just need love and someone willing to give me a few weeks to learn to trust them, and once I trust you, I'm the most loyal friend you'll ever have; I'll follow you everywhere. I love to play fetch in the yard, but I haven’t quite figured out that I’m supposed to bring the ball back yet. I’m kind of a goof and sometimes get so excited to chase the ball that I don’t pay attention to what’s in front of me. I really love being petted, especially belly rubs, and will roll all the way onto my back for them! I also LOVE to chew on bones and un-stuff all the stuffies I'm given! I would love a home of my own where I’d never have to worry about being hurt again. Do you have room in your heart for a gorgeous hunk like me? Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Remington DOB: 07/09/15 estimated Weight: 46 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 My name is Remington (Remi for short) and I am one smart and handsome dude. I have 2 foster human siblings aged 7 and 8 that I love to play with, only they don’t share their stuffed animals with me (boring). They do like training me, and snuggling with me too. I am playful and adore my bones, rope toys, and I really like to chase balls around the house. I sometimes like to jump up onto tables, but I am easily redirected when corrected. I love to snuggle, and I love getting my belly or ears rubbed. I can easily doze off when my ears are being rubbed! Watch out for my snore though, I can surprise my foster family quite a bit with how loud I get. I like to follow you around the house and be where the action is. I sit/stay very nicely when asked and take treats very gently. I am very friendly when I meet new people – I could use a little more work on proper manners when I greet people who come over – I am so excited to see you I want to jump up and say hello. I don’t bark very much, only if someone is at the door. I am potty trained, and do well in my crate too! I have an elderly dog for a foster sister, who does not like my puppy antics. I also have a terrier puppy for a foster sister and she is my best friend! We have the same energy level, so we work well with each other. I can be a little rough when I want to play with other dogs, so slow introductions would be best. I would do best with no dog siblings, or one that likes my antics (like a puppy). Overall, I am a sweet boy that needs a lot of help learning how to play with other dogs. I am amazing at walking on the leash, unless I see a dog friend. My foster parents have worked with me on walking, and my last test to pass is walking past other dogs. They call me “reactive” when I see other dogs, whatever that means. I just don't know my boundaries yet, and I think every dog would like my type of play. If I can't get to other dogs, I lose all of my focus. I may not be the biggest pittie mix, but I still have the strength. My foster family is working hard with me on my manners, but I still have a ways to go! I do require a fenced in yard, preferably a privacy fence (because of the work I need). It seems like I had a rough time before I came here; I arrived at the impound underweight with lots of infected puncture wounds on my chest and legs; I am healing well but still have scars. My foster family says I am such a special and loving boy that needs extra special attention from my furever family. But I'm told that whoever adopt me will be so lucky to have me! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 300. Name: Wayne DOB: Approx 3 years old Weight: 11.3 pounds Adoption Fee: $300 Hi Everyone! My name is Wayne, I am a estimated 3 year old 11.3 lb chihuahua. I came to ruff start after I was at risk of being put down at a local pound where I was taken after being found as a stray. I was so scared at the shelter that I didn't allow the workers to interact with me. After coming to Ruff I have completely opened up and I am loving life. I follow my foster parents around and love cuddling with them. My favorite is when my mom holds me and carries me around like a little baby and I give her kisses on her nose. I am my moms shadow no matter what she is doing. Toys are great and a I love to carry them around and shake them all over! I am very playful and act a lot like a puppy still. Sometimes I will even steal a shoe or two. I sleep in a crate at night and when my family is away. I do well in there only complaining about it once and a while. Sometimes I get to sleep in bed with my humans and I love that! I do good with going potty outside but will sometimes mark things especially if I am in a new area or a new doggy has visited my house. I live with other dogs big and small. I do great with the small dogs but tend to pick on the bigger dogs. So a home with smaller dogs would be best. Being with other small dogs gives me more confidence and helps me feel more comfortable. My mom doesn't have a kitty but she thinks I would do fine with them. Due to me being fearful with new people I should go to a home with older kids or no kids, I do tend to get so nervous around new people that I bark and growl at them. With time I get used to them and slowly build trust. My new family needs to be okay with me not wanting to be their best friend at first but know with some patience and a lot of treats I will eventually never leave your side, I promise I am worth the wait. I should go to a quiet home that doesn't have a ton of visitors as I will let visitors know I do not want them there. I am scared of storms and loud noises and will try to hide under furniture. Because I am easily startled and not good with new people/ bigger animals I do need to be kept in a fenced in area or leashed at all times when outside, I will explore if left unleashed. If you are a furever home that wants a cute little guy who follows you all over, super cuddly, and you are patient, and okay with me not liking strangers I could be your guy! She was with them quite a while, fighting some skin issues. Since she has joined her foster family with Ruff Start, we her skin issues have been resolved and she has a beautiful full coat! Jezabelle is a very sweet, loving dog. She loves human attention and craves affection. She is house trained and is doing great while on a schedule. She is also crate trained. Jezabelle is a very smart, fast learner. She already knows how to sit, and she redirects very well when she is doing something naughty, like sniffing the garbage. She does well with other dogs, but takes slow introductions to warm up to them. She does show reactivity when seeing other dogs on a leash so slow intros are best for her. Because of the reactivity to new dogs she does also require a fenced in yard to keep her feeling safe. Jezabelle does okay in the car if she is kenneled. We no longer let her loose in our car as she did get car sick the first time, but she does great when she is kenneled in the car. Name: Zeena DOB: 05/04/12 estimated Weight: 35 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Zeena is a gorgeous girl who is eager to please and has tons of love to give! She was found by her foster mom wandering the streets in pretty rough shape. Since she is so much happier and healthier now, she's so excited about life! Zeena does have a high prey drive and doesn't always do well with small dogs or cats (and is very interested in squirrels/rabbits/etc.). She does have the ability to climb fences (though privacy fences are harder to climb), and has managed to escape her collar/tether multiple times. Zeena will need to be tethered/leashed/fenced WITH supervision because she has the tendancy to chase after things. Zeena is very playful and energetic and would make a good walking/jogging buddy, but needs leash training. She does well with SOME other dogs (she tends to be selective) and really loves to play with them when she finds a dog she can get along well with. I'm not completely sure, but it seems like she does better with male dogs. Because she loves playing so much, she can be vocal, which may sound scary, but it's just her way of being excited! If Zeena is introduced to other dogs, it'll need to be done very slowly. Because she is so selective, it may be best for her to be the only animal in the home. Zeena is crate trained, and knows a few basic commands (sit, recall-her name, wait and stay). Since she's so eager to make her humans happy, given time/patience and some dedicated training, I'm confident that she can learn more! This sweet girl developed some allergies and we have been feeding her Nutro (a limited ingredient diet) which seems to have helped. A 22lb. bag of Nutro is around $50 (should last about a month and a half). She also has some incontinence issues. She does go potty outside, but tends to have accidents inside as well. We've tried several medications for this and she has seen a specialist, but we can't quite pin point the problem. For now, she gets frequent outdoor potty breaks and wears a diaper indoors. Simple solutions diapers are about $11 per 12 pack of diapers (we use roughly a pack per 2-3 weeks, but this may vary depending on how long she's kenneled, how many potty breaks she gets, etc.) Zeena is great with the kids in her foster home (ages 6 and 11) but can be a bit clumsy (and bumps into them-could potentially knock over smaller kids). She also tends to be a jumper when she is excited. Zeena loves to give the kids kisses! I don't let the kids play toys with Zeena as she has shown a bit of gaurding behavior when the kids try to get toys from her. This spitfire of a pup adores a good game of fetch and thoroughly enjoys a few rounds of tug-o-war! She gives the best face kisses you could imagine and absolutely loves to snuggle up into some blankets by her humans after she's been good and tuckered out! Zeena seems to appear larger than she actually is in photos! She's on the smaller side of "medium" and weights just about 35 pounds. Zeena is an incredible girl and will make an amazing companion! Like all of us humans, she's a bit rough around the edges and maybe a little misunderstood. She needs someone who is willing to put in the time and work and be dedicated to her, and in return, she'll give so much love back to you! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 325. Name:Petey DOB:5/13/2013 Weight:<10lbs Adoption Fee: $325 Hi there-Pretty Petey here! I am a 4 year old Chihuahua mix. If you’re looking for a sweet lap dog, I am your man. I am great with kids, too! I am a cuddler and snuggler. I am also very quiet. My foster mom says she hasn’t even heard me bark the entire time I’ve been here! I am looking for someone who will take the time to work on my potty training. I’m doing pretty good, it’s just no one ever took the time to really help me with it. I am looking for a home with or without other dogs. If there are other dogs, I prefer them to be around my size and not aggressive. You see, I sometimes get nervous around bigger dogs that are rambunctious, because I’m so little. My foster mom says she fell in love with me from the moment we met. She says I’m the sweetest little boy. Let’s get together and you can see for yourself! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 300. (HW+) Name: Butterball DOB: 5/23/2013 Weight: 8 lbs Adoption Fee: $300 Hi my name is Butterball. I came all the way from Texas via Ruff Start Rescue, but I am heart worm positive at this time and going thru treatment. I am available as a foster-to-adopt. I am living with a bunch of other dogs at my foster mom and dad's house. Even though I am a small dog, I like to try and control some of the other dogs. It takes me awhile to adjust to new situations and people. My foster parents have a big fenced back yard where I love to roam, lots of squirrels and birds to chase. I have a tendency to wander and investigate the neighborhood when not fenced. I am crate-trained, potty-trained, love my snacks, chewie’s, have played with toys a little, and am a great snuggler, on the couch and in bed. I like to go for walks, can be a puller, very good in the car, going to the park is one of my favorite times. Talking about favorite times, meal time, Yum!!! I would do best in a home with older children, or adults only. Just think how cute my picture will look in a frame on your desk at work, or by the bed on your night stand. I want to be your forever dog. If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org.
