Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet NEFA, she was rescued from a Sacramento shelter. Her family had to give her up for housing reasons. Their new rental agreement did not allow pets. She is part of our "I'm Special" group of dogs within our rescue. Each of our "I'm Special" dogs' adoption fee is $40. What makes Nefa special is that she has been waiting patiently for a home for a long time. We don't know why because she is a sweet, loving dog. Since being in foster care, she has blossomed, she is quiet in the house and is housebroken. Just an all around good dog. Nefa would do well around respectful school ages kids. She currently is fostered with a senior Doberman. They are fine together. However she does like to be alpha. So we prefer she be an only dog. We are working with leash manners with her as she can pull on the leash. We do recommend obedience classes for her. She loves the water and outdoor activities. She loves to please and will benefit from a family that includes her in their weekend and or daily outings. Nefa is 6 years old and weighs around 70 pounds. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on her vaccines.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Meet our little diva, Quinn. She is a gorgeous white chihuahua with a brown patch over one eye and a beautiful blue eye on the other side. She found herself impounded at an animal shelter. Being the little lady that she is, she was simply mortified at her living conditions. Concrete floor, sharing a bed with others, etc. Quinn is about a year old and weighs 9 pounds. She was quite popular. Quite a few people wanted to adopt her, but she just didn't act interested. She was pretty scared. So, a shelter employee took her home to foster as she could see the little sweetheart behind the fear. Sure enough, Quinn became a happy affectionate dog within a day. At the shelter employee's request, we took Quinn into rescue. She has been a joy to foster every day. She welcomes her foster mom's attention and as you can see, feels right at home on the furniture! Curled up next to you is a great place to be! Quinn also is very dog social. She has several playmates and does well with them. She has met cats and is about as uninterested in them as they are in her. We have not had her around children, but feel that kids of at least teenage should be fine.

      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Pug / Mixed (short coat). The Easter Treats are just that! Such a treat to care for. These boys are happy, playful, friendly and loving. They originally were part of a litter that consisted of 7 puppies! Homes were found for all but these 3 who were shelter bound. They were referred to us by a family who also adopted 1 of the other 4 puppies. They were born around January 21, 2017. We have 3 boys. Cadbury, Jelly Bean and Peeps. Cadbury weighs 4.2 pounds All 3 are great buds most of the time. They are siblings, so a scuffle here and there can be heard from their play area, but every night, they are all curled up in one black ball. Hard to tell where 1 puppy ends and another begins! They love playing with their toys and have learned to relieve themselves on the newspaper in their pen. They have not yet been started house training, but we believe that they have been crate trained. The pups were born to a family with children who loved playing with them, so the pups are all very well socialized. Because of their small size, if there are children in the home, they should be dog experienced and at least 5 years old.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Pomeranian / Mixed (short coat). Billy is a fun 7 month old Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix that weighs 7 pounds. We found this darling dog impounded at an animal shelter. As we walked towards the shelter from the parking lot, this little guy was being walked by a shelter volunteer. Billy's head was held high as he proudly strutted along as if he were walking into a show ring. He showed so much confidence, happiness and character, stretching his feet out in front of him like a proud little Pomeranian. It put an instant smile on our face. Needless to say, he joined our rescue that day. He does wonderful with other dogs. Will do fine in a multi-dog home, or as an only dog. We feel that he will do wonderful with kids that are old enough to enjoy and help care for a dog. Billy is sure to be a fabulous addition for a very deserving family.

Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Miniature Schnauzer / Mixed (short coat). Asha is a 2 year old Yorkie/Schnauzer mix who we found at an animal shelter. Brought in pregnant and had the puppies the night that she entered the shelter. Thankfully, we were able to bring the whole family home the very next day. She finished her job being the greatest mom ever! Now, it is her time to be cared for and loved as someone else's baby! She is super sweet. Weighs just over 8 pounds. Asha is not fully house trained, but when kept in a small area of the house, she will wait to be taken outside, and barks to let you know, when it is time. It won't take her long to be completely trained. She also is very quiet when crated. Asha does fine with other dogs. She hasn't been real interested in playing, but can live with them. She will also be just fine as an only dog. We have not had her around children, but dog experienced kids should be fine. She has a wonderful and easy going personality. Asha is young, but doesn't seem to need a lot of exercise to be kept happy. She loves nothing more than to be with her foster mom, cuddling on the couch. It would be nice if her family liked a mix of regular mild exercise and quality home life. She would be a great candidate for a therapy dog as well as a good possibility for someone that can take their dog to work with them.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Honey is a 9 month old, 34 pound beautiful chocolate brindle baby girl. We are not sure what she is mixed with. Possibly Boxer, Pit Bull and maybe even some Great Dane! The shape of her head and ears really resemble a Dane. 34 pounds, does not! What ever she is, she is such a sweet and playful girl. They day we found her at the animal shelter, she and another young Pit Bull pup were just having a ball playing together. Honey definitely enjoys the company of other dogs and truly enjoys playing. Since joining our rescue, she has become such a gentle, well behaved little lady. Always happy to see you, but not over exuberant. She is going to be very easily trained. Honey is crate trained, enjoys walks on the leash and would do wonderful with a family that enjoys spending time with their dog. She'll enjoy hiking, dog beach, dog parks, camping, soccer games and outdoor dining. I don't think that there is much this little girl won't enjoy. A lovely dog in search of a fabulous family.

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (short coat). Dixie is a 4 year old, 22 pound Chocolate and White Parti Cocker Spaniel with her full natural tail. An awesome little dog that was impounded at an animal shelter. She has been a joy for her foster mom since day one. A lovely little dog who really enjoys her time with her family. Enjoys walks on the leash and does really well navigating around the house and yard, including steps. She has juvenile cataracts, but it certainly doesn't slow her down. Dixie does wonderful with other dogs and has been also doing well with the cats. Her coat had to be shaved short because it was long and matted, but it will continue to grow and will need regular appointments to see the groomer in order to keep her neat and tidy. She is almost completely house trained and has learned how to use the doggy door to go outside. Dixie is a great little dog with a very easy going personality. We have not had her around young kids, but feel that she will do just fine with dog experienced children of at least 8 years of age.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Carlos is a 3 year old, Chihuahua mix. He is marked like an Australian Cattle Dog and loves to play fetch like an Australian Cattle Dog. We are purely guessing based on color and personality. He weighs about 12 pounds. He loves his foster mom. He isn't the type that welcomes strangers. He is cautious when meeting new people. Once he realizes that the person can be trusted, he will be fine. Will play fetch with a tennis ball for as long as you will throw it for him. He also just loves carrying it around, should no one wants to play with him. We don't think that he has lived with other dogs before. When he met some of the dogs in his foster home, he didn't know what to do. He acted ready for battle, but there were so many of them, so he played it safe and stood very still while they all checked him out. They all were very kind, agreed he could be trusted and ran off to play. He stood there perplexed, but relieved that he was still safe. He is relaxing more with the other dogs better every day. Carlos met the cat in his foster home and was non reactive. We do not think that a home with young children would be a good fit. Teenagers that are dog experienced should be fine.

Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound (short coat). Hi there, my name is Nancy! I am a 55 pound, 8 year old Blue Tick Hound. So, my story? I auditioned to be in the movies and television. Wow, I was so excited when I passed my audition and was hired! How fun, right? Well, quite honestly I got pretty bored with it. Stardom might work for some folks, but me? Hum, I'm just not a glitz and glamour girl. I am a Hound and proud of it! Please give me the great outdoors. I love going for walks on the leash. One of my friends at the movie studio loves to go for hikes and he always took me with him. We had some wonderful adventures. That's more my style than sitting in front of a camera. I am a very well behaved girl. I love living inside the house and I have great manners. If you have another large breed dog, that's great! But, I'm not a fan of cats or small dogs. So, that's my story. If you think that you would like to meet me, please let my foster mom know! I'm a lot of fun and I hope that you are too!
