Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet NEFA, she was rescued from a Sacramento shelter. Her family had to give her up for housing reasons. Their new rental agreement did not allow pets. She is part of our "I'm Special" group of dogs within our rescue. Each of our "I'm Special" dogs' adoption fee is $40. What makes Nefa special is that she has been waiting patiently for a home for a long time. We don't know why because she is a sweet, loving dog. Since being in foster care, she has blossomed, she is quiet in the house and is housebroken. Just an all around good dog. Nefa would do well around respectful school ages kids. She currently is fostered with a senior Doberman. They are fine together. However she does like to be alpha. So we prefer she be an only dog. We are working with leash manners with her as she can pull on the leash. We do recommend obedience classes for her. She loves the water and outdoor activities. She loves to please and will benefit from a family that includes her in their weekend and or daily outings. Nefa is 6 years old and weighs around 70 pounds. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on her vaccines.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Toby

      rescue
      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (long coat). Toby is a 2 year old, approximately 25 pound, Buff and White Parti Cocker Spaniel with a natural full tail. A good Samaritan while visiting Mexico brought Toby and Sebastian back with her to the States after rescuing them, in hopes of finding them great homes that will love them as each and every dog deserves to be loved. Eventually, her plea for help was forwarded to us. And here they are, waiting for those great homes that were originally intended for them! The dogs get along together, but are not bonded, so they do not need to be adopted together. We just mentioned them both, as their story is the same. Toby is the youngest. He is a very happy Cocker Spaniel. Always ready for loving pets from his foster mom and enjoys exploring his big outdoor yard. He would love an active family that enjoys going on walks, hiking, camping and maybe even some soccer games! The family that originally fostered him had children. Toby did wonderful with them. The youngest was 8 years old. Such a beautiful and kind hearted dog.

Posted Breed: Cattle Dog (short coat). Cowboy is a 4 year old, 75 pound Australian Cattle Dog. He was impounded at an animal shelter along with a female cattle dog. The female was adopted, but Cowboy got left behind. He is truly an awesome dog. Very gentle and kind. He is larger than your average Cattle Dog, but is definitely over weight. He should probably lose around 10 pounds. Cowboy is easily frightened, which is typical for this breed. He will walk on a leash when he feels comfortable, but puts the brakes on when he gets scared. He most likely didn't get out much in his former home. Over fed and hung out around the house all the time. That being said, he really will benefit from a family that will take him for daily walks and outdoor exercise. He'll have to start out slow and work up to longer trips. He'll be slim and trim in no time! Cowboy does wonderful with other dogs. He has been a comfort to a very scared rescue dog in his foster home. She has blossomed with his help. He lets her hide in his shadow and because of his kindness has shown his foster sister that their family can be trusted and loved. He really is a very special dog. We have not had him around children, but we feel that he will do fine with dog experienced kids.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel. Kelsey is a 2 year old, 22 pound, Buff Cocker Spaniel with her long natural tail. We found her at an animal shelter. Very scared and confused. She was adopted out really quickly, but then returned. We don't think that Kelsey has had much outside socialization. She is very timid of people that she doesn't know as well as other dogs. She has spent a lot of time with 2 other Cocker Spaniels in her foster home, Sally and Wyatt and is doing wonderful with them. Kelsey is a very happy dog. Still learning how to walk on the leash and is a bundle of energy! She is going to make a fabulous dog for someone who has the time for training, exercise and continued socialization. She has been crate trained and took to it really quickly. The groomer said that she did well for her too. Kelsey seems to have a slow growing coat, but she will need regular grooming appointments to keep her tidy. Kelsey met the cat in the foster home. Very curious and cautious, so she should be very easily trained to live in a household that includes cats. We are looking for a family that is experienced with raising young dogs. We have not had her around children, but feel that dog experienced kids of at least teen age should be fine.

      Breed: Siberian Husky-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Siberian Husky / White German Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Icy is a 11 month old, 48 pound Husky. Might be a pure bred, although could be a mix of German Shepherd. We found her impounded at an animal shelter. She was so friendly and happy meeting us through the bars of her kennel, how could we leave with out her? We couldn't! Icy has been a joy to foster since the day she arrived. Always happy and eager to play. She does not appear to have much, if any training, but always happy. Loves to play outdoors and completely enjoys the company of her foster mom. Icy was very easily crate trained. Only took her a few days to learn that it was her safe place and always seems to have a treat in it when it is time to go to bed. She will walk on a leash, but doesn't understand yet, that she is to walk quietly along side you. She has normal prey drive for a larger breed dog, so most likely will do best in a home without cats. We have not had her in a dog play group, but feel that she will be fine with dog social dogs. Icy will excel in a home with a family that loves the outdoors and spending time with their pets. Someone who enjoys the aspects of training a dog to be the best that it can be. She is going to bring much joy to someone, that is for sure. We have not had her around children. We don't feel that she will have a problem with them, but the kids really should be adult size and sturdy because Icy will jump up on people until properly trained not to do so. A beautiful, happy and big puppy dog, that is for sure!

      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Maltese / Mixed (medium coat). Muffin is 2 years old. Most likely a Jack Russell, Maltese or Poodle mix. She weighs just under 13.4 pounds. She has been a well loved, pampered princess her whole life. She lived in an apartment with a single woman. Her owner had to move from her apartment. A friend that lived down the street agreed to care for Muffin until the owner could find another pet friendly apartment to rent. They decided that placing Muffin in a new home, where she could be kept as an indoor pet, was the best thing to do. Muffin is crate trained, but prefers sleeping in bed with you. She will do best in a home with a single person or adult couple. She is fearful when meeting people that she doesn't know, so most likely would do best in a quiet home without children. Muffin has done wonderful with other dogs and leaves the cats alone in her foster home. She is a very quiet dog and low key, but has nice long legs and would be able to go for walks everyday. Most likely a great prospect for hiking as well. Muffin is a very nice little dog that is going to be so happy once she finds her forever home! Foster Update: 03-07-2017 - Muffin is doing great in her foster home. She loves to be in your lap along with playing with her toys. She really likes playing with her ball. She is learning some commands like; sit, down, stay and come and go to your kennel. She has been going for daily walks and seems to really like it. Foster Update: 03-12-2017 - Muffin is now learning Agility, see the video below.

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (short coat). Dixie is a 4 year old, 22 pound Chocolate and White Parti Cocker Spaniel with her full natural tail. An awesome little dog that was impounded at an animal shelter. She has been a joy for her foster mom since day one. A lovely little dog who really enjoys her time with her family. Enjoys walks on the leash and does really well navigating around the house and yard, including steps. She has juvenile cataracts, but it certainly doesn't slow her down. Dixie does wonderful with other dogs and has been also doing well with the cats. Her coat had to be shaved short because it was long and matted, but it will continue to grow and will need regular appointments to see the groomer in order to keep her neat and tidy. She is almost completely house trained and has learned how to use the doggy door to go outside. Dixie is a great little dog with a very easy going personality. We have not had her around young kids, but feel that she will do just fine with dog experienced children of at least 8 years of age.

Posted Breed: Schnauzer / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat). Herman is a 3 year old, 17 pound, Schnauzer/Yorkie mix that is ready for fun! He has spent the last year of his life at a Animal Studio training for television and movies. He has amazing intelligence and drive. A great prospect for agility. He has great energy and is a fabulous size. The reason that we were asked to take him is because he just prefers training with 1 person. He bonds with one person and only is responsive to them. Basically a one person dog. That being said, he has done well with the multiple women in his foster home. Herman is also great with other dogs. Seems to be really well socialized. He has met the cat in his foster home and isn't really interested in becoming friends. He acts like he probably had a bad experience with them. Not sure if he should chase or run away! Herman really will excel with someone who enjoys activity in their life and wants an energetic dog to join them on their adventures. A great size for someone in a smaller home that is looking for a smaller dog to run, hike, camp and enjoy dog beach.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Carlos is a 3 year old, Chihuahua mix. He is marked like an Australian Cattle Dog and loves to play fetch like an Australian Cattle Dog. We are purely guessing based on color and personality. He weighs about 12 pounds. He loves his foster mom. He isn't the type that welcomes strangers. He is cautious when meeting new people. Once he realizes that the person can be trusted, he will be fine. Will play fetch with a tennis ball for as long as you will throw it for him. He also just loves carrying it around, should no one wants to play with him. We don't think that he has lived with other dogs before. When he met some of the dogs in his foster home, he didn't know what to do. He acted ready for battle, but there were so many of them, so he played it safe and stood very still while they all checked him out. They all were very kind, agreed he could be trusted and ran off to play. He stood there perplexed, but relieved that he was still safe. He is relaxing more with the other dogs better every day. Carlos met the cat in his foster home and was non reactive. We do not think that a home with young children would be a good fit. Teenagers that are dog experienced should be fine.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Candy is a 1 year old Cattle Dog mix. She has the beautiful red roan coat which is very short in length. A smaller dog, weighing only about 25 pounds. She was brought to the animal shelter by her former owners. They stated that they did not have time for her. She was raised with dogs, cats and children, although we do not know the ages of the kids in the home. Candy is a very shy and quiet dog. She will do best in a home where her family really just wants a nice house dog to spend their time with. She is easily frightened, so a quiet home would suit her best. She is built to be able to go on long walks and outdoor activities. A dog experienced person could certainly work with her so that she gains confidence and realize how much fun exploring her world could be! She enjoys the company of other dogs and is much more relaxed when in the company of her dog pal. This is a very sweet and special dog looking for a very sweet and special person or family to spend the rest of her life with.
