Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $40. Meet NEFA, she was rescued from a Sacramento shelter. Her family had to give her up for housing reasons. Their new rental agreement did not allow pets. She is part of our "I'm Special" group of dogs within our rescue. Each of our "I'm Special" dogs' adoption fee is $40. What makes Nefa special is that she has been waiting patiently for a home for a long time. We don't know why because she is a sweet, loving dog. Since being in foster care, she has blossomed, she is quiet in the house and is housebroken. Just an all around good dog. Nefa would do well around respectful school ages kids. She currently is fostered with a senior Doberman. They are fine together. However she does like to be alpha. So we prefer she be an only dog. We are working with leash manners with her as she can pull on the leash. We do recommend obedience classes for her. She loves the water and outdoor activities. She loves to please and will benefit from a family that includes her in their weekend and or daily outings. Nefa is 7 years old and weighs around 70 pounds. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on her vaccines.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Rascal

      rescue
      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (short coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Rascal is a 9 year old, 47 pound, red neutered male Cocker Spaniel with a docked tail. He was dumped at the animal shelter by his family. He is a larger boned and heavier than usual Cocker Spaniel, but isn't obese. Rascal is a very sweet dog. He is in great shape and has good energy. There is no way we would have guessed that his age is correct. Our Vet confirmed that he feels 9 years is correct, based on the wear of his teeth. We had his coat groomed short, but it will continue to grow. He has a beautiful think coat. Whether you decide to let it grow our or keep it short, he will need regular grooming appointments to keep him tidy. He is beautiful either way. Rascal loves people. Very social and happy. We were told that he has lived with other dogs before, but our experience is that he prefers to be an only dog. He is going to be happy hanging around the house with you, gardening outdoors or traveling in the car. He'll love to get out for walks on the leash, light hiking and camping. He has a great energy about him. Not too spunky, but always ready to go. We have not had him around young children or cats. His happy go lucky personality tells us that he'd probably do great with older, well behaved, dog experienced kids.

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Meet our little diva, Quinn. She is a gorgeous white chihuahua with a brown patch over one eye and a beautiful blue eye on the other side. She found herself impounded at an animal shelter. Being the little lady that she is, she was simply mortified at her living conditions. Concrete floor, sharing a bed with others, etc. Quinn is about a year old and weighs 9 pounds. She was quite popular. Quite a few people wanted to adopt her, but she just didn't act interested. She was pretty scared. So, a shelter employee took her home to foster as she could see the little sweetheart behind the fear. Sure enough, Quinn became a happy affectionate dog within a day. At the shelter employee's request, we took Quinn into rescue. She has been a joy to foster every day. She welcomes her foster mom's attention and as you can see, feels right at home on the furniture! Curled up next to you is a great place to be! Quinn also is very dog social. She has several playmates and does well with them. She has met cats and is about as uninterested in them as they are in her. We have not had her around children, but feel that kids of at least teenage should be fine.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Miniature Pinscher Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Daisy is about 2 years old and weighs 20 pounds. She was originally turned into the animal shelter by her former family because they had too many dogs. They stated that she is a Labrador Retriever mix. She definitely looks like she is mixed with a Miniature Pinscher. Daisy is a wonderful and sweet dog. She is very comfortable when she is surrounded by other dogs and loves to engage in play with them. She tends to be very shy when she meets someone new, if there are not other dogs around. Definitely gets her confidence from her canine companions. We feel that Daisy will do best in a home either with a single person or a family that has multiple dogs. Daisy would be a great option for someone who loves to get outdoors for exercise and fresh air, but can't have or doesn't want a large breed dog. Daisy can keep up with hiking, long walks and jogging. She has a small frame with long legs. Very agile and athletic. That being said, once she is indoors, she loves nothing more than to cuddle on the couch with you. Her former family stated that she was good with small children and was learning basic obedience skills. She lived indoors and is house trained. We introduced Daisy to the cat in her foster home. She was friendly with the cat and did not try to chase him.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (short coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Kona is a 8-10 year old spayed female buff Cocker Spaniel with a docked tail. She weighs about 26 pounds. We found her at the animal shelter after her owner relinquished her. He was elderly and could no longer care for her. Kona is a very sweet little Cocker. Enjoys walks on the leash and car rides. Ready for some cuddle time on the couch? She is happy to join you! Despite her age, she still is very spunky and spry. Not too much slows this girl down. Although not wildly active, she is always up for an adventure if you are willing to take her! She has been groomed recently. Her coat will continue to grow and will need regular grooming appointments to keep her tidy. Cocker Spaniels have an undercoat that will shed some. Her former owner stated that she preferred to be an only dog. That may be the case. Who wouldn't want all the undivided attention?! In her foster home though, she spends her time with other dogs. She doesn't really want to play with them, but she will hang out with them just fine. She met the cat in her foster home. At first, she could care less. But that fluffy tail! She acted like it was a toy and kept grabbing at it. She just might be the type of dog that would enjoy a playful cat. We have not had her around young children. We feel that well behaved, dog experienced kids of at least 10 years old should be fine.

Posted Breed: Poodle (Toy) / Shih Tzu / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Buttons is a 7 year old, 13 pound, sweet little black/white parti Poodle mix. She was turned into the animal shelter by her owners, although we do not know the reason why. She has a cataract in one eye, but can see just fine with the other eye. This sweet little house dog has been groomed short, but her coat will continue to grow and will need regular grooming appointments to keep her tidy. Buttons has great energy. She is just as happy to sit on your lap all day as she is to play with other dogs. Her buddy is 10 months old and about twice her size. She is a great playmate for him. It won't matter to her if she is an only dog or part of a multi-dog family. She met the cat in her foster home and did just fine with him. We do not know if she has lived with children. Most likely she'll be fine with kids at least 8 years old. Buttons will love walks on the leash, car rides, lap time, garden time and most other activities that a dog this size can join in on. She is very go with the flow and happy. Will be a wonderful addition to someone's lucky home and family.

Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Cheyenne is a beautiful 6 yr old Aussie Shepherd mix, weighing 42 pounds, with a bob tail. She has the size and general look of the Aussie with the coloring of the german shepherd. She was part of a huge rooster bust. The owner of the roosters also had several dogs. Cheyenne was one of them. Cheyenne is a special girl. So sweet and very shy. This is a dog that is going to blossom with a kind, very experienced dog home that has patience to wait for her love and trust. A true "rescue" in so many ways. Cheyenne does not act like she has been abused in any way. Is she shy? Absolutely. When you are petting her, or brushing her does she relax? Yes she does. Can you take her for walks on the leash anytime soon? Probably not. Well, you can, but she won't enjoy it. She definitely is dog social and great around chickens! This is a project dog. But we love her dearly. She is confused, but she has definitely come around very fast in the short time that we have had her. She is going to be someone's very special girl. Will she be yours?

He had glaucoma so badly in both eyes that they needed to be removed. This certainly has not slowed him down any. As with most blind dogs, he gets around just fine. He knows where everything is in his home and navigates very well. Stevie is a complete sweetheart. Loves everyone that he meets with tail wagging enthusiasm. He is the type of Cocker that used to be referred to years ago as the "Merry Little Breed" of dogs. He does wonderful with both dogs and cats. We have not had him around children, but feel that he will be just fine with them. Such an awesome pup.

He has a beautiful lemon and white short coat that will not grow out long. He is 3 years old. Squirt is the sweetest little boy that you will ever meet. Very shy and happy to just hang out inside the house with you. He is confused by at leash right now, although he definitely could be taught to walk on the leash. He might even enjoy walks! You never know until you try, right? When he is taken outdoors, he wanders around just long enough to take care of his business and then stands in front of you waiting to be carried back inside the house. He does fabulous in a crate and is the happiest hanging out with his person. He has been a joy to foster. A very easy little boy. Enjoys his food and has been sweet with everyone that he has met.

Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Queensland Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Gigi is a 6 year old, 41 pound spayed female. This wonderful lady was turned into the animal shelter after her family was told by their landlord that they could not have a dog. She had lived as their house dog and obviously very loved. Gigi has lived with dogs, both large and small. She has been wonderful with all the dogs that she has been exposed to in her foster home. She isn't the type of dog to engage too much in play with other dogs, but is happy to share her home and family with her. She also has lived with cats. She has no interest in the cat that lives in her foster home. Gigi loves going for walks on the leash. She is a very happy dog and will enjoy whatever adventures her new family includes her in. She would enjoy walks, hiking, camping, soccer games, just to name a few. Her former family said that she is good with kids.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Taquito is a 5 year old, 4 pound darling Chihuahua! We found him impounded at an animal shelter. He came in as a stray to an animal shelter. His family did not come for him. That shelter was very overcrowded, so he was transferred to another shelter to give him more time. That is where we spotted him. Such an adorably sweet and friendly little guy! He went home with us that day. Taquito is not your average small Chihuahua. This little guy is large and in charge. He loves to explore his surroundings and has been completely relaxed and happy in his foster home from day one. Such a little charmer. Definitely did a great job of winning our hearts over! He does wonderful with other dogs. He hangs out with Trisha and Lulu each day. An adorable little trio. They enjoy their time outdoors as much as they enjoy their time indoors. Taquito met the cat in his foster home and did just fine. It might be that he didn't want to try to take on something so much bigger than him. Who knows!? It is actually pretty cute seeing a cat so much bigger than a dog. We don't know how he is with children. We feel that dog experienced kids of at least 8 years old should be fine. Such a great little guy!
