Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet NEFA, she was rescued from a Sacramento shelter. Her family had to give her up for housing reasons. Their new rental agreement did not allow pets. She is part of our "I'm Special" group of dogs within our rescue. Each of our "I'm Special" dogs' adoption fee is $40. What makes Nefa special is that she has been waiting patiently for a home for a long time. We don't know why because she is a sweet, loving dog. Since being in foster care, she has blossomed, she is quiet in the house and is housebroken. Just an all around good dog. Nefa would do well around respectful school ages kids. She currently is fostered with a senior Doberman. They are fine together. However she does like to be alpha. So we prefer she be an only dog. We are working with leash manners with her as she can pull on the leash. We do recommend obedience classes for her. She loves the water and outdoor activities. She loves to please and will benefit from a family that includes her in their weekend and or daily outings. Nefa is 6 years old and weighs around 70 pounds. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on her vaccines.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
Breed: Cocker Spaniel-English Springer Spaniel Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: English Springer Spaniel / Cocker Spaniel / Mixed (short coat). Moe is a 5 year old, 40 pound Springer Spaniel/Cocker Spaniel mix. He is Liver and White with his natural long tail. His coat has been cut short, but will need regular grooming appointments to keep him tidy. His coat has minimal shedding of an undercoat. Moe's previous family lost their home, so Moe and his buddy Lola were turned over to us to find them their forever families. Both dogs were very well loved and house trained. He has been raised with cats. Moe walks on a leash, knows some basic commands and seems to have a loving personality. He will do best with a person or family that is home a lot of the time. He is now crate trained. He is active enough to enjoy long walks, hiking and dog beach. Old enough to appreciate good mid day nap and cuddle time. A great age, actually. His family consisted of teenagers, so he has been raised with kids beginning about 10 years old, when he was a puppy. A very nice medium size dog.

      rescue
      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (short coat). Sally is an 6-8 year old Cocker Spaniel with a docked tail. She has just a few tan spots on her, making her almost completely white. Her coat has been cut short, but it will continue to grow and will need regular brushing & grooming appointments to keep her tidy. Sally is a very sweet Cocker Spaniel and has a very gentle disposition. She is the type that would enjoy hanging around the house with you, going outside to enjoy some sunshine and spend time with you while you work in your garden. She does not require a lot of exercise to keep her content. Sally does wonderful with other dogs. She can live in a home as part of a multiple dog family or as a single dog. If she is a single dog, she will do best if someone is home with her most of the time. She also is fine with cats. We have not had her around young children, but feel that dog experienced kids of at least 8 years of age should be fine.

      Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Coco is a 55-60 pound, 1 1/2 year old Boxer mix. Mixed with what you say? She has the underbite & color of a Boxer. The drive of a German Shepherd, loves playing in water and with toys like a Labrador and has a bob tail of an Australian Shepherd. We do not know what she is a mix of, but this is a dog that loves life and great outdoor adventures. Coco was turned into the animal shelter simply because of her large size and need for more exercise. Her former owner took excellent care of her. Let her live inside the house and taught her basic commands. Coco needs to be able to stretch her legs. The first day that we brought her home, we turned her loose into an acre size yard. She ran and ran, just like you can imagine a horse would do when let out of it's stall to be free. She was so happy and almost didn't know which way to go first. After her free play time, we put her on a leash and went for a nice casual walk. She was amazingly obedient. Before letting her play, she about pulled us off our feet, when we put a leash on her. This is a dog that needs activity. She needs a family that truly enjoys activity, not a family that just hopes to get out more, so is getting a dog to help get them motivated. Coco is an amazing dog with amazing potential. When it came time to take her pictures for this biography, she jumped right up on the chair and posed like a pro. Again, very well behaved. We can't say enough good things about this dog. Coco is crate trained and house broken. Her former owner stated that she is good with kids. That being said, the kids should be big enough to be knock over proof. We have not had her around cats.

Breed: Jack Russell Terrier-Shih Tzu Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Shih Tzu / Mixed (medium coat). Carter is a very happy go lucky 1 year old, 19 pound Jack Russell Terrier mix. He lived in his last home as a loved house dog. We do not know the reason why he was given up. He loves people and is very social. He is a nice size for just about anyone that is looking for an active dog to spend their outdoor time with, but doesn't have the space for a large breed dog. He will enjoy walks on the leash, hiking, dog beach and camping and lots of cuddle time. Carter has been good with all the dogs that he has been with while being fostered. We have not had him with young children, but feel that he will be fine with dog experienced kids of at least 8 years of age.

      Breed: Shih Tzu
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (short coat). Crosby is a 4 year old, 16 pound sable Shih Tzu. Like so many shih tzus, he is very quiet, low energy and sweet. We found him at the animal shelter with his hair very overgrown and matted. Poor little guy had not been groomed in quite sometime. That being said, he is now trimmed up nice and tidy! His hair will continue to grow and will need regular grooming appointments. He was born without his left eye, so with careful grooming, his hair could be let grow out a bit long so that it covers that part of his face. Crosby has good vision in his right eye. Loves to be held and is a wonderful little dog. Would be a great companion to someone who is very low key themselves and wants a nice lap pet to spend their days with. He is easily startled so we feel that a home without young children, would be best. Older dog experienced kids would be fine.

      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Maltese / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (long coat). Roman is a 2 year old, 9 pound Maltese Poodle mix. He was turned into the animal shelter because he did not do well with the children in the home. He was very reserved when we first took him into the rescue, but is relaxing and doing really well with the people in his foster home. Runs right up to them for love and to be picked up. Roman did very well for the groomer. She said that he was fearful, but did fine for her. His hair will continue to grow, so regular grooming appointments will be needed to keep him tidy. He does wonderful with other dogs as well as cats. His former family had begun house training him as well as some basic obedience, but both will need to be continued. He has been crate trained. We are looking for a dog experienced adult only home for Roman.

      Breed: Miniature Pinscher-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Manchester Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Rocky is about a year old. Found as a stray who had not eaten much in weeks. They took him to the animal shelter in hopes that his family would be looking for him. When the family did not go in to the shelter to claim him, we were asked to find him the home that he needs and deserves. Being thin is not because he isn't interested in food. He is a very good eater. Has yet to turn down a meal. That being said, he is also very active, so he burns a lot of calories. He is very tall for a Miniature Pinscher, being more the size of the Manchester Terrier. He loves people and is very affectionate. We have not had him around young kids, but feel that he would do wonderful with teenagers who truly enjoy having a dog around for companionship. We picture him becoming their best friend. Rocky will enjoy walks on the leash, car rides, hiking and camping. He probably would even enjoy jogging. A great option for a person looking for an agile type dog in a smaller body. He does great with other dogs and could live with others or as an only dog.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (short coat). Penelope is a 6-7 year old Buff and White Cocker Spaniel with a docked tail. Her owners were cited for not having a dog license. The family had hit hard times and the fees were just too much, so they relinquished her to the animal shelter. Penelope has been a joy to foster. She is house trained. Knows how to use a doggy door and has mastered going up and down the stairs in her foster home, despite not being able to see. She loves walks on the leash and riding in the car. She is a very kind and confident dog. She is currently is living with other Cocker Spaniels and cats. She does fine, but enjoys being the pack leader. Penelope is crate trained and sleeps in her crate next to her foster mom's bed at night. Her coat is currently cut short, but it will continue to grow and will need regular grooming appointments to keep her tidy. We have not had her around children, but feel that dog experienced kids of at least 10 years old should be fine.

      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed. Wicket is a 15 pound, 5 year old Wire Hair Dachshund mix. We aren't sure what he is mixed with, but possibly Jack Russell Terrier. He has the short legs, long back as well as long ears. The ears are thinner and he has just enough energy and a bit of longer legs to be more agile and active that your typical Dachshund. He has the personality of a Dachshund and feels that he is very important! Wicket does great with the dogs in his foster home. He seems to enjoy their company but would also do just fine as an only dog. He hasn't bonded to any dog in particular. Co exists really well. He met the cat in his foster home and was non-reactive. He has a very typical Dachshund personality (per his foster mom who grew up with Dachshunds), so if there are children in the home, they should be of at least 8 years of age and dog experienced.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Female Female

      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: English Cocker Spaniel (medium coat). Marla is a beautiful 28 pound, 9 year old Buff Cocker Spaniel with a docked tail. Her hair has been cut in a Cocker Cut and will need daily brushing and regular grooming appointments to keep her neat and tidy. Marla's foster mom thinks that she is the perfect dog. House trained, crate trained, gentle, loves to walk on the leash, great for the groomer, is wonderful with other dogs and doesn't bother the cat. She is a perfect companion dog. Marla does seem to be either deaf or hard of hearing. We have not had her around young children, but feel that dog experienced kids of at least 8 years of age, should be fine. So many people want to rescue a dog that is easy. You won't find many dogs easier than this beautiful Cocker Spaniel. A truly lovable, great animal.
