Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet NEFA, she was rescued from a Sacramento shelter. Her family had to give her up for housing reasons. Their new rental agreement did not allow pets. She is part of our "I'm Special" group of dogs within our rescue. Each of our "I'm Special" dogs' adoption fee is $40. What makes Nefa special is that she has been waiting patiently for a home for a long time. We don't know why because she is a sweet, loving dog. Since being in foster care, she has blossomed, she is quiet in the house and is housebroken. Just an all around good dog. Nefa would do well around respectful school ages kids. She currently is fostered with a senior Doberman. They are fine together. However she does like to be alpha. So we prefer she be an only dog. We are working with leash manners with her as she can pull on the leash. We do recommend obedience classes for her. She loves the water and outdoor activities. She loves to please and will benefit from a family that includes her in their weekend and or daily outings. Nefa is 6 years old and weighs around 70 pounds. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on her vaccines.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Barley

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat). Barley is a 2 year old, 12 pound Yorkie Terrier mix. This little sweetheart was impounded at an animal shelter. When not adopted, transferred to another shelter. He was being prepared for an out of state ASPCA transport when we spotted him and added him to our rescue. This little guy, is very sweet. Shy initially and warmed the hearts of the foster home's extended family over the Christmas Holiday. Definitely a favorite. Barley has the gentle nature that everyone hopes for when adding another dog to an existing pack. He plays well along side the other dogs and has been wonderful to new dogs that have come into his foster home. He met the cat in his foster home and was non-reactive. We have not had him around children, but given his shy nature, dog experienced kids of at least teen age is what we recommend.

      Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Campbell, CA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Coco is a 55-60 pound, 1 1/2 year old Boxer mix. Mixed with what you say? She has the underbite & color of a Boxer. The drive of a German Shepherd, loves playing in water and with toys like a Labrador and has a bob tail of an Australian Shepherd. We do not know what she is a mix of, but this is a dog that loves life and great outdoor adventures. Coco was turned into the animal shelter simply because of her large size and need for more exercise. Her former owner took excellent care of her. Let her live inside the house and taught her basic commands. Coco needs to be able to stretch her legs. The first day that we brought her home, we turned her loose into an acre size yard. She ran and ran, just like you can imagine a horse would do when let out of it's stall to be free. She was so happy and almost didn't know which way to go first. After her free play time, we put her on a leash and went for a nice casual walk. She was amazingly obedient. Before letting her play, she about pulled us off our feet, when we put a leash on her. This is a dog that needs activity. She needs a family that truly enjoys activity, not a family that just hopes to get out more, so is getting a dog to help get them motivated. Coco is an amazing dog with amazing potential. When it came time to take her pictures for this biography, she jumped right up on the chair and posed like a pro. Again, very well behaved. We can't say enough good things about this dog. Coco is crate trained and house broken. Her former owner stated that she is good with kids. That being said, the kids should be big enough to be knock over proof. We have not had her around cats.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Hi, my name is Gordon! Well, my former family called me Gordon, but my foster mom seems to like to call me Sausage! That's kind of a scary name, right?! But, she is super nice and really seems to enjoy her time with me. My last family didn't realize that I don't understand how to live with other dogs. I just want to be someone's only fur pal. My foster mom thought I might like her cat. Seriously? If I don't want another dog around, why did she think I'd want a cat around? Anyway, we still manage to all live together without problems. She makes sure the cats just leave the room when I am around. That makes me feel very important! I am a good boy in the house. I love spending as much time inside with my foster family as I can. I also love walks on the leash and car rides. If you are looking for a nice pal to spend your life with, I would sure like to meet you! I would really like to find my very own person or family to love and look after!

Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Dachshund / Mixed (medium coat). Shelby is an 8 year old Wire Hair Dachshund, Basset Hound mix that weighs just under 20 pounds. She came into the animal shelter as a stray. Her family did not come for her. We feel that possibly her owner may have passed away. Shelby is a very sweet dog. Very quiet and easy to have around the house. She is old enough to enjoy good naps throughout the day, yet still active enough to enjoy exploring the great outdoors and walks on the leash. She is a very happy dog and very social with her foster family. Her dog pal is Wicket. They look very similar, although Wicket is about half her size. They are very cute in the yard together, hanging out and checking out all the new dog smells together. We have not had her around young kids, but feel that dog experienced children of at least 8 years old should be fine.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Carlos is a 3 year old, Chihuahua mix. He is marked like an Australian Cattle Dog and loves to play fetch like an Australian Cattle Dog. We are purely guessing based on color and personality. He weighs about 12 pounds. He loves his foster mom. He isn't the type that welcomes strangers. He is cautious when meeting new people. Once he realizes that the person can be trusted, he will be fine. Will play fetch with a tennis ball for as long as you will throw it for him. He also just loves carrying it around, should no one wants to play with him. We don't think that he has lived with other dogs before. When he met some of the dogs in his foster home, he didn't know what to do. He acted ready for battle, but there were so many of them, so he played it safe and stood very still while they all checked him out. They all were very kind, agreed he could be trusted and ran off to play. He stood there perplexed, but relieved that he was still safe. He is relaxing more with the other dogs better every day. Carlos met the cat in his foster home and was non reactive. We do not think that a home with young children would be a good fit. Teenagers that are dog experienced should be fine.

Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Manchester Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Rocky is about a year old. Found as a stray who had not eaten much in weeks. They took him to the animal shelter in hopes that his family would be looking for him. When the family did not go in to the shelter to claim him, we were asked to find him the home that he needs and deserves. Being thin is not because he isn't interested in food. He is a very good eater. Has yet to turn down a meal. That being said, he is also very active, so he burns a lot of calories. He is very tall for a Miniature Pinscher, being more the size of the Manchester Terrier. He loves people and is very affectionate. We have not had him around young kids, but feel that he would do wonderful with teenagers who truly enjoy having a dog around for companionship. We picture him becoming their best friend. Rocky will enjoy walks on the leash, car rides, hiking and camping. He probably would even enjoy jogging. A great option for a person looking for an agile type dog in a smaller body. He does great with other dogs and could live with others or as an only dog.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Female Female

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (short coat). Sally is an 6-8 year old Cocker Spaniel with a docked tail. She has just a few tan spots on her, making her almost completely white. Her coat has been cut short, but it will continue to grow and will need regular brushing & grooming appointments to keep her tidy. Sally is a very sweet Cocker Spaniel and has a very gentle disposition. She is the type that would enjoy hanging around the house with you, going outside to enjoy some sunshine and spend time with you while you work in your garden. She does not require a lot of exercise to keep her content. Sally does wonderful with other dogs. She can live in a home as part of a multiple dog family or as a single dog. If she is a single dog, she will do best if someone is home with her most of the time. She also is fine with cats. We have not had her around young children, but feel that dog experienced kids of at least 8 years of age should be fine.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed. Wicket is a 15 pound, 5 year old Wire Hair Dachshund mix. We aren't sure what he is mixed with, but possibly Jack Russell Terrier. He has the short legs, long back as well as long ears. The ears are thinner and he has just enough energy and a bit of longer legs to be more agile and active that your typical Dachshund. He has the personality of a Dachshund and feels that he is very important! Wicket does great with the dogs in his foster home. He seems to enjoy their company but would also do just fine as an only dog. He hasn't bonded to any dog in particular. Co exists really well. He met the cat in his foster home and was non-reactive. He has a very typical Dachshund personality (per his foster mom who grew up with Dachshunds), so if there are children in the home, they should be of at least 8 years of age and dog experienced.
