Posted Breed: Golden Retriever (short coat). Say hello to Buddy! This sweet old gent is 16 years old and comes to us from a loving family facing a medical crisis. Buddy has gone home to Bill, where he was welcomed with open arms. We are sure these two will be the best of friends! All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. If you are interested in learning more about Buddy, please contact us at applications@grrswf.org, or you can read about our adoption process in detail and download an application from our website at http://www.grrswf.org/index-2.html PLEASE NOTE: We serve Southwest Florida from Naples to Ocala. If you live OUTSIDE of our service area and are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please note that we will only consider an application for senior dogs (over the age of 8) or dogs with special needs (usually medication). BEFORE submitting your application, send an email to info@GRRSWF.org to request an exception to our service area. If that approval is given, you will be asked to complete an application, clearly stating on it that you are interested in a special needs or senior dog. However, please be aware that, unfortunately, there are some locations we simply cannot cover because we do not have sufficient representation in those areas to perform the required home visits prior to the adoption, or follow-up visits afterward. If that is the case, we will be happy to refer you to a local rescue or shelter.

More About Golden Retriever Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Henry 678

      Breed: Chesador
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chesapeake Bay Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Henry, aka Goofball, is a happy, energetic 6-year-old Lab mix who is friendly, adores water and loves to play. Henry enjoys walks...the more the better...he would walk all day! He loves car rides, gets excited and will kiss your face while you are driving. And belly rubs, those are the best. Henry needs a patient owner, but once he trusts you, he is all in. He loves every person he meets and can be exuberant, quite puppy-like at times, with selective hearing skills :) He is learning manners very well, but will test you if he is in that playful mood. Henry loves to hang out in the backyard and snooze…fenced yard required ….and he can sunbathe for hours, just to be around his human. He would do best with an active owner, frequent walks, additional training and structure. Henry seems to be OK with low-key dogs, but would not do well with dogs who are high-energy or in his face. No little dogs and no kitties around this boy — he will chase! He would be perfectly fine as an only dog. He is great on the leash with a training collar. He does not want to give you the things he values..... a ball, a kong.... but he will drop it or give it to his foster mom if she has food. Likewise, Henry loves a good game of fetch, but you must have a treat bag attached to your body if you want Henry to bring the toy back! At the end the day, Henry runs to his crate to catch some z’s. Is there room in your family, and your heart, for dear Mr. Goofball? GRRSWF will consider applicants outside of our normal area for Henry, but applicants must live in the state of Florida and be willing to travel to meet Henry. All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. If you are interested in learning more about Henry, please contact us at applications@grrswf.org, or you can read about our adoption process in detail and download an application from our website at http://www.grrswf.org/index-2.html PLEASE NOTE: We serve Southwest Florida from Naples to Ocala. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever (long coat). /* SPECIAL NEEDS */ 3/25/17-Ryder is in a 30 day training program and his trainer will be assisting us in choosing the right match for him. Say hello to Ryder! This one-year-old guy is bright, happy, good-looking and very high energy. He's almost always moving. If you are interested in an energetic fellow who would excel in obedience or agility (he already has agility experience), Ryder may be the dog for you. Ryder loves belly rubs and being brushed. He can even bring his brush to you. But he will need an experienced owner that will work with a trainer. Ryder resource guards his food and toys. With hand feeding, the food guarding has improved but will have to be managed. Ryder cannot have toys at this point as they trigger his guarding. He came to a shelter as a stray so we don't know what kind of history has caused his issue with possessions. For this reason we can not put him in a home with children and although he likes dogs, we want him to be the only dog with a strong dedicated owner. Early indications are that Ryder gets along with other dogs, but not with cats. GRRSWF will consider applicants outside of our normal area for Ryder, but applicants must live in the state of Florida and be willing to travel to meet Ryder. _________________________ All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever (long coat). Charming Charity is six years old, and came to us from a shelter with a life-threatening pneumonia. Phenomenal veterinarians pulled her through, and generous readers of our Facebook page donated significant funds toward the cost of her care; we are forever grateful. Charity is now healthy and ready for her forever home. She loves the outdoors… lying in the yard just chillin’, catching some rays, or swimming in the pool, sitting on its steps to stay cool. For other exercise, Charity likes to amble around the neighborhood, hoping she will encounter a rabbit she can try to chase it. Her leash skills are improving. We don’t know anything about Charity’s past. We suppose some experience led to her unfriendly interactions with other dogs. Foster mom Cheryl chooses walk times when most other dogs are tucked in for the night because Charity becomes agitated, pulling on her leash, barking loudly, and making quite a fuss when she spots other dogs. Charity is working with a trainer to learn better interactions with other dogs, but at this time we will not place Charity in a home with other dogs. She prefers not to be around cats. Charity loves her toys, rides in the car, and is learning to play fetch. She is beginning to lose weight, is down to 97.5 pounds, but she is a big-boned girl, and will never be a swimsuit model. :) Foster mom Cheryl says, ”Charity is a sweetheart. She sticks to me like glue, and is great with my 8- and 10-year-old grandchildren. She is a happy, sweet girl, and would love a home with a big yard, a swimming pool, and a snuggly bed.” Wouldn't you love to welcome this special girl into your heart and home? ________________________ All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed. James was living with a homeless family before finding a new life with GRRSWF. He is docile, loving and needs little exercise. James is a major league skink-hunter. At about 11 years old, he loves nothing better than to search the entire yard for the little guys who may be hiding. He then he stares at them until they either smile back at him or run for the palms! James walks carefully because of his hips, but the glucosamine medications have worked wonders. He dances (truly!) now when he sees his dinner being prepared, and nuzzles the other dogs in the foster family's home to ask them to play with him. He loves to snuggle and have his head rubbed. His gorgeous big brown eyes look right into your heart. James is a happy guy, and a wonderful companion who loves to lay near you and just be together. Wouldn't you love to have this love muffin to pet as you read or watch tv? He's a doll. GRRSWF will consider applicants outside of our normal area for James, but applicants must live in the state of Florida and be willing to travel to meet James. ________________________________ All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Jesse was living with a homeless family before finding a new life with GRRSWF. He is docile, loving and needs little exercise. Jesse is an affectionate little guy, and loves being with furry friends, part of the gang! This boy is estimated to be about 12 years old. He is a real love muffin, and enjoys being petted. He stays close to his “people,” watching to make sure he misses nothing, such as his cheese snacks! He can hear the crackle of cellophane wrappers being opened from a city block away! Jesse is a happy guy, and a wonderful companion. Jesse had a severe case of demodex when he came to GRRSWF, which destroyed many of the hair follicles on his legs. The demodex has cleared, and his foster family is treating his skin with frequent baths to help him regain healthy skin. Jesse is a special dog who will touch your heart with his courage and love. Is he the one for you? The Golden Retriever Rescue of Southwest Florida is a proud recipient of funding from Maddie’s Fund® (www.maddiesfund.org), helping to achieve a no-kill nation #ThanksToMaddie.
