Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed. Our lovely little lady Esther has come so far! Her beauty has been restored, while her golden spirit remains intact despite the profound neglect she suffered. Just look at her recent photos……Wow! This darling 12-year-old girl came to us with demodex and was heartworm positive. What a difference TLC, good veterinary care and quality food can make in just a few short months. Esther is so adorable. She loves to nap, and all 44 pounds of her are filled with love...for Ohio State University! At least, that's what her foster family contends! If you are interested in adopting Esther and are an approved home, please contact Jeanine or Lynette, or send us a private message on Facebook. If you are not yet approved and live in Southwest or Central Florida, please go to www.grrswf.org and fill out an application. Thank you! The Golden Retriever Rescue of Southwest Florida is a proud recipient of funding from Maddie’s Fund® (www.maddiesfund.org), helping to achieve a no-kill nation #ThanksToMaddie. With their support, we have been able to provide extensive veterinarian treatment which has helped Esther recover from significant neglect.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Naples, FL
Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed. Howdy! I'm Brian, a handsome, muscular, one-year old guy who loves to run and play. Like the name of my breed, I have a beautiful golden coat with blonde highlights, and I'm an excellent retriever! Not to brag, but I'm smart, and love to learn. Right out of the gate, I showed my foster mom I could do high-fives with alternating paws! Cool, huh? She is working with me on obedience training, and I'm learning quickly. We are thinking about starting agility or rally, too, for new things to master! My foster mom says I'm a great dog. Although I'm young and like to play, I'm calm in the house, easy to be around. I love attention, and can be very affectionate with my family; I prefer my family to strangers. I like when my family pets me and cuddles me, and wag my tail to show it! When mom and I go for a walk, she likes to talk to the neighbors, so I lay down in the grass and wait patiently. If the neighbor has a dog, I'll try to play with him. Sometimes strangers want to pat my head, and I'm just not crazy about that. I walk well on a leash, but I'm working on not pulling when I see other dogs, or things that look like prey (squirrels, anyone?). I agree, I need a strong owner who can handle me and continue to work with me on obedience in this area. I'm an excellent watch dog. I'm alert, and have an impressive deep, loud, ferocious bark....and beautiful teeth! I could do commercials! I like routine, and have adapted well to my foster mom's. While she is out, I show her I am housebroken, and do well left alone during the day. I also show her I'm not destructive in the house, and leave her shoes and furniture alone. My vice? Paper products! They are so fun to shred! My other love? Food! I have a very healthy appetite, and it’s pure bliss when it’s time to eat. But I'm a good boy, I don't jump on countertops, and I leave my mom’s food alone. I can't say why, but I have a hang up about being groomed. Quirky. I'm not crazy about the muzzle mom puts on me when she makes sure I look good, but I do look good! What kind of forever home am I hoping for? One in which I'm the only pet, and without children. Why? Because I can get confused about other animals and small beings, and think they want my food. And I've already said how much I love my food! Maybe it has something to do with how I spent the first year of my life, I don't know. I do know a quiet, calm household with an owner committed to continuing my training would be perfect, and my paws are crossed that you are that family. If you are interested in Brian and are an approved foster or adopter, please contact Jeanine or Lynette. If you are not yet approved and live in Southwest or Central Florida, please go to www.grrswf.org and fill out an application. Thank you!

Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Jesse and James were living with a homeless family before they found a new life with GRRSWF. They are both docile, loving and need little exercise. Jesse is an affectionate little guy, and loves being with furry friends, part of the gang! This guy is estimated to be about 12 years old. He is a real love muffin, and loves to be petted. He stays close to his “people,” watching to make sure he misses nothing, such as his cheese snacks! He can hear the crackle of cellophane wrappers being opened from a city block away! Jess is a happy guy, and a wonderful companion. Jesse had a severe case of demodex when he came to GRRSWF, which destroyed many of the hair follicles on his legs. The demodex has cleared, and his foster family is treating his skin with frequent baths to help him regain healthy skin. If you are interested in adopting Jesse and are an approved home, please contact Jeanine or Lynette, or send us a private message on Facebook. If you are not yet approved and live in Southwest or Central Florida, please go to www.grrswf.org and fill out an application. Thank you! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chesapeake Bay Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Henry, aka Goofball, is a happy, energetic young Lab mix who loves walks, belly rubs and just hanging out with his human! Henry is friendly, adores water and loves to play. He needs a patient owner, but once he trusts you, he is all in! He loves every human he meets and can be quite exuberant. Henry can be quite puppy-like at times, with selective hearing skills :) He is doing very well with learning manners, but will test you if he is in that playful mood. He will do anything for a treat. The perfect situation for Henry includes a fenced yard because he loves to hang out in the yard and is very quiet. He would do best with an active owner, frequent walks, additional training and structure. Henry seems to be OK with low-key dogs, but would not do well with dogs who are amped or in his face. No little dogs and no kitties around this boy — he will chase! He would be perfectly fine as an only dog. He is great on the leash with a training collar. He still does not want to give you the things he values..... a ball, a kong.... but he will drop for his foster mom if she has food. Henry is looking for a patient family that has experience with large dogs, to teach him manners. If you are interested in adopting Henry and are an approved home, please contact Jeanine or Lynette, or send us a private message on Facebook. If you are not yet approved and live in Southwest or Central Florida, please go to www.grrswf.org and fill out an application. Thank you!

Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed. Jesse and James were living with a homeless family before they found a new life with GRRSWF. They are both docile, loving and need little exercise. James is a major league skink-hunter. At about 10 years old, he loves nothing better than to search the entire yard for the little guys who may be hiding, then he stares at them until they either smile at him or run for the palms! James walks carefully because of his hips, but the glucosamine medications have worked wonders. He dances (truly!) now when he sees his dinner being prepared, and nuzzles the other dogs in the foster family's home to play with him. He loves to snuggle and have his head rubbed. His gorgeous big brown eyes look right into your heart. James is a happy guy, and a wonderful companion who loves to lay near you and just be together. If you are interested in adopting James and are an approved home, please contact Jeanine or Lynette, or send us a private message on Facebook. Starla has a darling personality, and gets along well with other dogs. At going-on-twelve, Starla enjoys short walks, and her baths to keep her skin healthy. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever (long coat). Aloha! Gorgeous Nani hails from Hawaii, and brings with her a laid-back personality. She is very good around people, even large groups, and likes to keep her foster family in view. She is happy in her own skin, sometimes seeking attention…such as when she wants to be helped up onto the couch! Nani likes to sleep in the bedroom with her family, but usually prefers the floor to the bed. She gets along with dogs and cats, even those cats who snuggle with her. Nani enjoys riding in the car, needing help to get in, and taking short walks. She would probably go farther, but her hips bother her, so she takes medication for them, and for her dry eyes and for ear infections; she is almost totally deaf. Children in her new family should be teenagers or older, to ensure that this 13-year-old love is not knocked over. If you are interested in adopting Nani and are an approved home, please contact Jeanine or Lynette, or send us a private message on Facebook. If you are not yet approved and live in Southwest or Central Florida, please go to www.grrswf.org and fill out an application. Thank you!
