Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed. Our lovely little lady Esther has come so far! Her beauty has been restored, while her golden spirit remains intact despite the profound neglect she suffered. Just look at her recent photos……Wow! This darling 12-year-old girl came to us with demodex and was heartworm positive. What a difference TLC, good veterinary care and quality food can make in just a few short months. Esther is so adorable. She loves to nap, and all 44 pounds of her are filled with love...for Ohio State University! At least, that's what her foster family contends! If you are interested in adopting Esther and are an approved home, please contact Jeanine or Lynette, or send us a private message on Facebook. If you are not yet approved and live in Southwest or Central Florida, please go to www.grrswf.org and fill out an application. Thank you! The Golden Retriever Rescue of Southwest Florida is a proud recipient of funding from Maddie’s Fund® (www.maddiesfund.org), helping to achieve a no-kill nation #ThanksToMaddie. With their support, we have been able to provide extensive veterinarian treatment which has helped Esther recover from significant neglect.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Ryder 741

      rescue
      Breed: Golden Retriever
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Golden Retriever (long coat). /* SPECIAL NEEDS */ RYDER NEEDS A HOME AND A JOB! Ryder, a young, purebred male golden retriever, is seeking a job J, ideally with a family who has training experience or a canine competition background. His ideal home is one with a strong, fair and consistent leader, and set routines boundaries, to help Ryder make good choices. The adopting family will need to spend time in Naples both before the adoption and periodically afterward to work with the trainer to ensure that everyone is able to reinforce consistently what this lovable dog has learned. Children in the family should be at least the age of 12 to ensure they have the maturity to participate in this effort. Ryder would do well in a calm, structured environment that allows him to be able to watch before engaging. He is very immature and is learning impulse control. He will work for the rewards of food, toys or your attention. He has a full list of cues that he knows and loves to perform. A good example is the cue “out,” which he knows very well. Cues need to be used consistently, or Ryder becomes confused. When he has something he should not have, he will trade it for another toy or his food. Ryder loves to work and gets excited when he does things correctly. He has learned the word “sit” as an off-switch when he gets too excited; it helps him to refocus on the task at hand. If not given guidance, Ryder will make up his own games. Ryder loves his crate, finding it to be a safe place when he becomes unsure. He would do well in a supervised environment with a fenced-in back yard, and would not do well in an apartment or condo. He really responds to his human female friends once he is given a chance to get to know them. Ryder does not do well with cats, or children under 12 who may inadvertently not follow his learned commands. This energetic guy will bring the right family years of joy and love. Are you that family? GRRSWF will consider applicants outside of our normal area for Ryder, but applicants must live in the state of Florida and be willing to travel to meet Ryder. All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. If you are interested in learning more about Ryder, please contact us at applications@grrswf.org, or you can read about our adoption process in detail and download an application from our website at http://www.grrswf.org/index-2.html PLEASE NOTE: We serve Southwest Florida from Naples to Ocala. Duchess 775

      rescue
      Breed: Golden Retriever
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Golden Retriever (long coat). Duchess is a youthful 12-year-old, who loves her toys! She gets along perfectly with all people and other dogs. She knows her commands, has very nice manners and won't touch her food until you tell her it's okay. Her foster mom brought Duchess to an event at Rural King and she had a blast! She loved the attention, and appears to love children, as she would seek them out for petting. Duchess was also smitten with GRRSWF’s vice president, Denny… every time there was a lull in the attention, she'd have her head on his leg with her tail wagging madly. Duchess arrived here at GRRSWF very obese; the initial thinking was that arthritis was the cause of the difficulty she had getting up. But her foster mom Maryann now believes it was more that she was overweight. “I could barely get her up off a dog bed (she did better on the floor) and sometimes it took many tries. She's been on the green bean diet since I brought her home, and already Duchess has much less difficulty getting up. I can't wait to see how well she does once she reaches her ideal weight.“ This royal Duchess will fill your hearts and home with love and joy. Is she the one for you? All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. If you are interested in learning more about Duchess, please contact us at applications@grrswf.org, or you can read about our adoption process in detail and download an application from our website at http://www.grrswf.org/index-2.html PLEASE NOTE: We serve Southwest Florida from Naples to Ocala. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever. COURTESY POST: This is Duke, a 5 year 9 month old male neutered chocolate lab that the owners are looking to adopt out. He is a very sweet boy. He is in good health. His rabies vaccine is up-to date but needs to have the rest of his vaccines updated. When in the home with his family and familiar friends he is a lover. He loves to cuddle. He even nibbles on my ears or neck He also loves to play and fetch toys. You can roughhouse him all you want. Grab his paws and tail and he just thinks it's all a game and affection. Will say though he isn't the brightest but he tries. Duke has some anxiety and the owners cannot care for him anymore. He is on Fluoxetine for the anxiety, this helps but he still does not do well when the owners are gone at work. Duke is not destructive at all in the home. His anxiety comes from lack of confidence. He gets fearful when alone. He keeps escaping our back door and when out running loose he lunges and hair stands up and barks and corners people. He has never bit anyone, but if in such highly aroused state I'm afraid he could. If he's on a leash he doesn't flinch or react to anyone walking. If anything he welcomes the pets and attention. Again it's only when he is alone and approached that he reacts very fearful and timid and unsure. The issue is not his behavior in the home. The issue is his behavior outside of the home when roaming. He needs a fenced yard for his safety and those around him or a home without kids coming and going and doors opening and closing. He would benefit greatly from a training program to work on his behavioral issues. Duke is crate trained and his crate is his sanctuary. He has no issues with his crate. He does occasionally chew up a leather shoe or piece of underwear. He is a dog after all. If interested in Duke please contact his owner directly at: toleksa1970@gmail.com

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (long coat). COURTESY POST: Henry needs a new home. He is between 13 and 15 years old, about 20 pounds, and is a long-haired doxie mix. He has some arthritis (has been on Miloxicam oral for pain), some minor coughing as a result of earlier HW damage, and a bit of general anxiety. He is a sweet-natured dog who loves people, treats, short walks, and snuggles. He is anxious around children and can be aggressive toward them. He has been in a home with dogs and cats and is well socialized with other animals. His family is very sad to let him go, but at his age he is just not able to tolerate a household with two small children and they want him to enjoy his senior years with less stress. He would be very happy with a single person or couple or a family with teenagers. If interested, contact Katie at katie@dsouthard.com.

Posted Breed: Golden Retriever (long coat). Charming Charity is six years old, and came to us from a shelter with a life-threatening pneumonia. Phenomenal veterinarians pulled her through, and generous readers of our Facebook page donated significant funds toward the cost of her care; we are forever grateful. Charity is now healthy and ready for her forever home. She loves the outdoors… lying in the yard just chillin’, catching some rays, or swimming in the pool, sitting on its steps to stay cool. For other exercise, Charity likes to amble around the neighborhood when no one is around, hoping she will encounter a rabbit she can try to chase it. Her leash skills are improving. We don’t know anything about Charity’s past. We suppose some experience led to her unfriendly interactions with other dogs. Foster mom Cheryl chooses walk times when most other dogs are tucked in for the night because Charity becomes agitated, pulling on her leash, barking loudly, and making quite a fuss when she spots other dogs. Charity is working with a trainer to learn better interactions with other dogs, but at this time we will not place Charity in a home with other dogs. She prefers not to be around cats. Charity loves her toys, rides in the car, and is learning to play fetch. She is beginning to lose weight, is down to 97.5 pounds, but she is a big-boned girl, and will never be a swimsuit model. :) Foster mom Cheryl says, ”Charity is a sweetheart. She sticks to me like glue, and is great with my 8- and 10-year-old grandchildren. She is a happy, sweet girl, and would love a home with a big yard, a swimming pool, and a snuggly bed.” Wouldn't you love to welcome this special girl into your heart and home? ________________________ All GRRSWF dogs have undergone a full examination by a veterinarian, and any health concerns have been addressed. Jesse is an affectionate little guy, and loves being with furry friends, part of the gang! This boy is estimated to be about 12 years old. He is a real love muffin, and enjoys being petted. He stays close to his “people,” watching to make sure he misses nothing, such as his cheese snacks! He can hear the crackle of cellophane wrappers being opened from a city block away! Jesse is a happy guy, and a wonderful companion. Jesse had a severe case of demodex when he came to GRRSWF, which destroyed many of the hair follicles on his legs. The demodex has cleared, and his foster family is treating his skin with frequent baths to help him regain healthy skin. Jesse is a special dog who will touch your heart with his courage and love. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chesapeake Bay Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Henry, aka Goofball, is a happy, energetic 6-year-old Lab mix who is friendly, adores water and loves to play. Henry enjoys walks...the more the better...he would walk all day! He loves car rides, gets excited and will kiss your face while you are driving. And belly rubs, those are the best. Henry needs a patient owner, but once he trusts you, he is all in. He loves every person he meets and can be exuberant, quite puppy-like at times, with selective hearing skills :) He is learning manners very well, but will test you if he is in that playful mood. Henry loves to hang out in the backyard and snooze…fenced yard required ….and he can sunbathe for hours, just to be around his human. He would do best with an active owner, frequent walks, additional training and structure. Henry seems to be OK with low-key dogs, but would not do well with dogs who are high-energy or in his face. No little dogs and no kitties around this boy — he will chase! He would be perfectly fine as an only dog. He is great on the leash with a training collar. He does not want to give you the things he values..... a ball, a kong.... but he will drop it or give it to his foster mom if she has food. Likewise, Henry loves a good game of fetch, but you must have a treat bag attached to your body if you want Henry to bring the toy back! At the end the day, Henry runs to his crate to catch some z’s. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Great Pyrenees / Mixed (long coat). Our sweet cuddlebug Gerry is in need of a foster or forever home. Gerry is named for a benefactor who recently left us an unexpected and much appreciated donation. Gerry comes to us from our friends at the Marion County shelter. He was profoundly neglected, abandoned, and is heartworm positive. We do not even know if he is truly a golden, but he needed our help and we were happy to step up. When he arrived, his skin looked as if it had been through a meat grinder. He had significant bacterial and yeast infections in his ears, he was missing hair over his entire body, his skin was thickened and had numerous skin tags/masses over his entire body. Gerry also had severe dental disease, resulting in the need to remove over a dozen diseased teeth. Can you imagine the pain he was in? Somehow, Gerry is as sweet as can be, and has already begun healing. Gerry is super sweet and loves to snuggle. He has nice manners and is excellent with other dogs, but cannot be in a home with cats. He does require a little extra care as he continues his recovery, but he is otherwise easy and low maintenance. If you are an approved foster or adoptive home and can help Gerry, please contact Lynette or Jeanine at applications@GRRSWF.org. He will thank you every day.
