Great Dane

A.K.A. : Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff
Overview: The Great Dane is a huge dog with a sweet and gentle nature. He needs a lot of space for exercise, though he can be very calm and well-behaved indoors.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): 100-120
Height (in): male: 30-32, female: 28-30
Colors: Brindle, black-masked fawn, blue, black, harlequin (white with irregular black patches). Mantle (black and white)
Coat: Hair is short and smooth.
Character: Great Danes are affectionate, calm, loyal, and intelligent. Although they do not bark very much, they make great watch dogs.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They are usually wary around strangers, but are good with welcomed visitors.
Care: The Great Dane should be grooming with a rubber brush during periods of shedding.
Training: This breed grows quite large, so for an early lesson he should be trained not to pull on the leash. He's quite eager to please, so a proper approach should provide great results.
Activity: The Great Dane needs a lot of exercise, including being able to run freely off the leash in open countryside.
Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries.
Life Expectancy: 6-8

More About Great Dane Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Hound / Terrier / Mixed. Cute Aubie is full of fun and love. She is a trickster girl and loves her games of "keep away" yet will always come running for treats and sweet talk. She likes her walks and grooming sessions. Having grown up at the shelter, Aubie does need to adjust to new things. She is more cautious of unfamiliar men and of children, and new situations. She is loving and loyal to those she knows. Aubie does best with submissive and sensible dogs; high energy or assertive dogs upset her. http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com/p/adopt.html "Adult" is at least 3 years old. rescue
      Breed: Mastiff-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed. It is hard to believe someone lost this big girl, but its true - she was found roaming. She is just a baby still, very young and silly. If you would love the challenge and reward of training up a young gal to be a model citizen, she is full of opportunity! Though definitely of a mastiff type, she is not as huge as a full mastiff (tho she isn't dainty either - she is 78#). She is very sweet and wants to be a lap dog, so be prepared! She does need plenty of exercise and attention to avoid turning her teeth toward destructive enterprises. Also, being big and clumsy, she would be a poor choice for a family with young children. She has done well with a Great Dane but not with a smaller dog. If you have a dog her size, that may work out. But on the other hand, she might be all the dog you need! "Adult" is at least 3 years old. "Large" is over 20 inches at the shoulder. Fenced yard and approved application required. Visit or email for application. Shelter phone often does not work, please use email link on this listing.
