Posted Breed: Great Dane / Labrador Retriever (short coat). David is a Great Dane that was found starving and near death on the side of the road. Someone had dumped him to fend for himself. They did not want him because he had bad hips on both sides. The way they decided to deal with it was to dump him knowing he was unable to fend for himself. A kind-hearted woman in Taiwan rescued this wonderful dog and took him to the vet. David's life is starting to turn around, good food and a flight to the States. The wonderful folks at UC Davis are trying to help him walk without pain. Please, we rarely ask for help but if you can donate to David's care, that would be a godsend. David has had surgery on one of his hips and is doing great. We think that he won't need surgery on his other hip because hes doing so well. Hes now able to run and play. But, David's real hobby is lounging on he sofa and waiting for someone to scratch his ears. Please consider adopting Dave. Hes ready for his forever home.

Great Dane

A.K.A. : Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff
Overview: The Great Dane is a huge dog with a sweet and gentle nature. He needs a lot of space for exercise, though he can be very calm and well-behaved indoors.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): 100-120
Height (in): male: 30-32, female: 28-30
Colors: Brindle, black-masked fawn, blue, black, harlequin (white with irregular black patches). Mantle (black and white)
Coat: Hair is short and smooth.
Character: Great Danes are affectionate, calm, loyal, and intelligent. Although they do not bark very much, they make great watch dogs.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They are usually wary around strangers, but are good with welcomed visitors.
Care: The Great Dane should be grooming with a rubber brush during periods of shedding.
Training: This breed grows quite large, so for an early lesson he should be trained not to pull on the leash. He's quite eager to please, so a proper approach should provide great results.
Activity: The Great Dane needs a lot of exercise, including being able to run freely off the leash in open countryside.
Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries.
Life Expectancy: 6-8

More About Great Dane Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Penngrove, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). JJ is a friendly, active, Chihuahua mix. He loves to go for walks and with his long legs he can do a nice long one. JJ can be a little timid with people on first meet but will be sitting in your lap giving you a cuddle in no time. He loves other dogs and gets along with everyone. He is not intimidated by big dogs; he was playing with our gentle giant, David, the other day. With his confidence he has no need to “yap” like some small dogs.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). This darling, almost a year old, shepherd mix was found by animal control with a collar that was so tight it was embedded in her skin. A kind hearted volunteer took her to the vets on our behalf. Dr. Stout needed to her collar that was deeply embedded around the entirety her neck. This collar cut in so deeply that it had to be surgically removed and staples placed all around her neck to close the wound. I can’t imagine the pain this girl was in for many months yet Inga has remained sweet tempered and loving.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Penngrove, CA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Jax is 4-5 years old. He originally lived in a family with 3 other dogs. He is a little reserved at first but once he feels comfortable with you he will be your loyal and loving companion for life! He will want to do whatever you want him to do whether he wants to or not because he bonds very tightly and is extremely obedient. Jax would prefer an adult environment–kids could visit etc. He is fine with other dogs but would not let another dog dominate him. Of course he is housetrained, calm quiet and very well mannered.

Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). May is a bundle of happiness! May weighs 35 lbs. She is very energetic. She's just always wiggly happy, from her big smile to her stubby little tail! Her exuberant personality is very infectious :) everyone loves May! She is very playful so her doggie friends will need to be on board with that. Most cats would not appreciate her since she would probably treat them like a dog and want to play chase etc. She enjoys toys and kids. She might overwhelm toddlers with her playfulness but 6 and up would have a blast with her! She is a medium sized dog, at around 35 - 40 pounds. She has had a great start on crate training, and she is good with other dogs! Arriving from our sister rescue in Oklahoma on June 28th.
