Posted Breed: Great Dane / Labrador Retriever (short coat). David is a Great Dane that was found starving and near death on the side of the road. Someone had dumped him to fend for himself. They did not want him because he had bad hips on both sides. The way they decided to deal with it was to dump him knowing he was unable to fend for himself. A kind-hearted woman in Taiwan rescued this wonderful dog and took him to the vet. David's life is starting to turn around, good food and a flight to the States. The wonderful folks at UC Davis are trying to help him walk without pain. Please, we rarely ask for help but if you can donate to David's care, that would be a godsend. David has had surgery on one of his hips and is doing great. We think that he won't need surgery on his other hip because hes doing so well. and David now weighs 115 lbs., so hes no longer skinny. Hes now able to run and play. But, David's real hobby is lounging on he sofa and waiting for someone to scratch his ears. Please consider adopting Dave. Hes ready for his forever home.

Great Dane

A.K.A. : Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff
Overview: The Great Dane is a huge dog with a sweet and gentle nature. He needs a lot of space for exercise, though he can be very calm and well-behaved indoors.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): 100-120
Height (in): male: 30-32, female: 28-30
Colors: Brindle, black-masked fawn, blue, black, harlequin (white with irregular black patches). Mantle (black and white)
Coat: Hair is short and smooth.
Character: Great Danes are affectionate, calm, loyal, and intelligent. Although they do not bark very much, they make great watch dogs.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They are usually wary around strangers, but are good with welcomed visitors.
Care: The Great Dane should be grooming with a rubber brush during periods of shedding.
Training: This breed grows quite large, so for an early lesson he should be trained not to pull on the leash. He's quite eager to please, so a proper approach should provide great results.
Activity: The Great Dane needs a lot of exercise, including being able to run freely off the leash in open countryside.
Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries.
Life Expectancy: 6-8

More About Great Dane Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Zachary

      rescue
      Breed: Silky Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Silky Terrier / Mixed (long coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Zachary is a 2-year-old silky or Yorkshire terrier mix. This cutie is an extremely happy guy that loves everybody. He came in with horrendous injuries and multiple vets refused to take on the complicated surgery needed. We persisted until we found a wonderful vet, Dr. Richardson, who has helped us with complicated surgeries on multiple occasions. He had surgery to remove his right rear leg on July 5th and is all healed. Zachary has done really well in a foster home with 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 chickens. He is quite agile, handling steps and the leap onto the couch with ease. He holds no grudges for what was done to him and is very loving and eager to please. He does not like other dogs sniffing to linger near his pelvis or face and will give a little warning to back off. He has learned house manners, comes right away when called and walks well on leash. He has gained confidence and will entertain himself—he was a bit of a velcro dog upon arrival. He still does not like to be left alone for too long but has done well as an office work companion.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Wilma is an incredibly loving lab shepherd mix who was found as a stray, half the body weight she should be. Underweight and scared at first, while at the shelter she has put on 15 lbs. and she will continue to gain strength and her health while at BDR. We hope to heal her broken heart as well as take care of her body. Senior dogs need a comfy place; they give so much more than they ask for. UPDATE: Wilma has truly blossomed at BDR and will be even happier after her trip to the dentist for many extractions to remove bad teeth.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (long coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Mason was rescued from a hoarding situation. Nine little dogs lived in a closet covered in feces. That’s how they spent their lives day in and day out. Everything– grass, sky, bird– is a new experience for them, in turn fascinating and terrifying at the same time. They are very shy, some are even fearful of the human touch. We are convinced that with patience and a gentle hand they will learn to trust. Understanding their prior life, the foster home or adoptive parent working calmly will help these young dogs reach their full potential. Mason has already made forays into our volunteers’ laps for treats. In order to adopt Mason we will need the potential adopter to visit at least 10 times to build confidence and a relationship with this insecure dog. We highly recommend visiting on a Monday at least once to see the loving trusting bond Mason has with our kennel assistant. This leads us to believe a good trusting relationship will be built if the potential adopter puts in the effort.

Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed (long coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Hey, come check me out! My name is Ronan and I am a ton of fun. I love to learn, have a quick mind and a zest for life. I'm waiting.... Ronan came in with a terrible skin issue. After 6 weeks in semi-isolation, lots of baths, brushing, and this new haircut, he is free to play out and about. He is a beautiful Border Collie mix with lots of energy. He is very engaging boy. What we have learned about Ronan over the last few months, is that he does get protective of his person. So, we feel that Ronan would be a great dog in a more rural setting. If you have a farm or ranch and want an energetic dog like Ronan, please let us know.

She is ok with other dogs and would make an excellent companion for children over 6, especially now when school is out. As a general rule, we prefer dogs under 15 lbs. not to go out with children under 6 unless they are experienced with little dogs in their home.
