Posted Breed: Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). Thor is 3 years old, housetrained and well behaved in the house. He is very good with children and will not jump or knock over a small child. He pulls on the leash but has a nice gait for someone who likes to jog on their walks. He will crate but doesn't like that confinement. He rides well in a vehicle. His special needs issues are he doesn't like vet visits very well and may need to be muzzled. He is aggressive to other animals and should be an only pet. He shouldn't be trusted around cats either. Thor is set in his ways and needs a firm hand in handling. Training classes would be a recommendation for him. Thor has been neutered, micro-chipped and is on heart worm preventative. He is up to date on his vaccinations.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). DOB - 11-11-2014 Bonnie, sister to Cora and Todd, is now 1 yr. 4 mos. old. She is a sweet girl that is special needs in that she is a bit shy and needs time to adjust to her new home environment. She does fine with other dogs when it is eating time or general playing in the yard but she gets possessive with objects that she claims as hers and will become guarded over the objects. She will not share and can be a bully and will hurt the other dog whether adult or puppy. Because of this she would need to be the only dog in the family She does okay with cats as I was told by her former family, she likes children and does fine with farm animals. She just needs extra attention and limited freedom when at first going to her new home until she becomes accustomed to her new family. She prefers the outdoors to being inside as she feels claustrophobic when inside to long. Bonnie has been spayed, micro-chipped and is on heart worm preventative. She is up to date on her vaccinations.

Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). DOB - 11-11-2014 Todd, brother to Cora and Bonnie, with a different set of character flaws. He also is a special needs boy that is extremely fearful and if adopted will need to have limited freedom by his new people. He needs to learn not to be fearful in his new environment and that can only be achieved with limited freedom and constant interaction with people. He is not a fear biter but tries to withdraw instead. He seems to do fine with other dogs but does try to be dominant with his littermates. He does not have recall because of his fearfulness and will run off but seems to stay around the area if he gets loose. He has never messed in the house so can be housetrained, but he acts claustrophobic when indoors. He walks well on a lead. He has never been abused since he has been in the system since 8 wks. of age. It is just his character and will need a special person who will love him and give him time to adjust. He cannot just be put out into the yard and be expected to respond well to a person. That will only accelerate his fear factor. Above all this he is a sweet boy and gentle natured. Todd has been neutered, micro-chipped and is on heart worm preventative. He is up to date on his vaccinations.
