Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Carol! She is a lovely, tender-hearted, beautiful girl with the biggest, deep brown eyes that will capture you instantly. Pair those peepers with her soft cream and tan badger markings on a soft white coat, and you can’t help but fall in love. Born around February 14, 2012, Carol is good with other dogs, and she would love a big doggy companion to play with and hang out. She doesn’t tolerate small dogs that tend to steal her toys. She even likes cats! To show her affection for her fellow canines and felines, she regularly cleans their ears! Carol would like to live in a quiet household where things are calm and consistent. She is house trained and leash trained. She can be a little shy upon meeting new people, so she would do great with someone who will make her feel confident and loved. After you win her trust, she will show her appreciation by becoming the best, loving, affectionate family dog. This sweet, sensitive girl is available for adoption only in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. SPIN Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere. All SPIN dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. Please go to our website www.SpinRescue.org and fill out an application for this great Great Pyrenees! More About Great Pyrenees Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Joker! This sweet and gentle Great Pyrenees was born on March 15, 2012. He has the most adorable stocky build. He is a big boy at 125 pounds; his ideal weight is probably about 115. Joker is a great companion dog. He was in a loving home for three years until one of his humans became ill, and he had to be re-homed. He adjusted nicely to his new foster home as they lavished him with the attention he loves. Joker is a happy, lovable dog. He loves to follow you around the house and settle in beside you. He is friendly when guests are invited inside. He is used to being king of his castle and wants to be the only dog in his new home. He can get along with other dogs as long as they are big, slow, and calm. He doesn’t like little flitting-type of dogs. He does fine with older, calm children also. Young, active kids make him nervous. He prefers a calm, quiet household. He enjoys his daily mile-long walk. He likes car rides and enjoys trips to the dog park. He does not dig in the yard, and he only barks when there is something to warn you about. Joker is afraid of thunderstorms. His fear can be managed with a light dose of medication. Sometimes he likes to take refuge in his crate. If you are home during the storm, he is fine if he is in the same room as you. Will you be his new family? SPIN Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere. Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Harrison Ford! This beautiful Great Pyrenees was born around July 1, 2016. He is a strong, solid boy. His full adult weight will probably be around 110 pounds! When he first came into rescue at age 7 months, sweet Harrison he was a scrawny, shivering, scared 36 pounds. He endured horrific conditions as a young pup. To top it off, he also had distemper. These circumstances left him emotionally and perhaps neurologically scarred. He is very cautious; he is afraid of loud noises and any change in his environment. Sweet Harrison has transformed beautifully under the loving care of his foster family. His coat has become thick and plush, and he’s up to a healthy 95 pounds! He still has a little growing to do – a little taller, a little more filled out. He loves hanging out and playing with the other three big dogs in his current home. He loves going for walks around the neighborhood. However, he is not yet ready to face all of his fears outside a home. He is scared for his life when off-leash at a dog park, so dog parks are absolutely out of the question for him for now. He does ride very nicely in a car. Handsome Harrison is great with older kids, about age 13 and over. He is initially afraid of strangers and doesn’t let them touch him right away. He warms up to house guests after a few days, but with much trepidation. He needs a very special adopter to help him along his road toward emotional healing. He needs a quiet, nurturing household. A person(s) with lots of love and patience. His foster family has made great progress in getting Harrison to trust humans and gain confidence. He is very loving with his foster mom, and he likes the rest of foster family, This gorgeous guy is available for adoption only in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Great Pyrenees / Mixed (long coat). Meet Sam! This cutie-pie also answers to “Spike.” He is likely part Golden Retriever because of his beautiful chestnut-colored coat and his body shape and size. He is likely part Great Pyrenees because of his hind dew claws and his independent think-for-himself personality. To adopt Sam, contact adopt@goldenretrievers.org (rather than SPIN). Adorable Sam loves massages, so get ready to sink your fingers into his lovely coat! He loves running 90 to nothing, especially through water puddles! He will sit and come for a treat. He stops at doors and waits politely to be allowed through. He walks well on a leash. He travels well, but needs help loading in a vehicle. Sam’s left eye sees outward rather than to the front, so when something is right in front of his nose, he cannot see it. His eye specialist explained that Sam’s eyes are not positioned normally, but his overall vision is fine. His judgment of distance and depth perception are not the best, so his new family will need to always make allowances for that. Sam is hesitant with other dogs, but that generally comes from the other dog. With his eye issue he does not greet or present himself in normal (I’m a calm dog let’s sniff each other) dog fashion, which sometimes gives the other dog a weird vibe. The ideal family for Sam would be active, patient, dog-savvy, have teenage or older kids, and have owned a dog before. Someone with previous Pyr experience is a bonus. He would probably be happier as an only dog. For Sam's complete history, go to http://www.goldenretrievers.org/our-dogs/spike-16-149-m-5-years. Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Oakley! This darling Great Pyrenees was born around November 2014. He is at his ideal weight of 86 pounds. Oakley is the most affectionate boy, and he loves to love. He’ll walk right up to you and rub his sweet face on you or lay his face in your lap for attention. Snuggling is on top of his to-do list! This calm, affable fellow is an all-around good dog. He would love to live in a tranquil, quiet household, perhaps with a retired couple. He is playful and enjoys hanging out with his foster fur siblings. He is easy going and gets along with all dogs. When his small foster sibling dogs pester him, he just walks away. He could be an only dog, but he sure seems to enjoy some canine company. In his foster home, he is respectful to the resident cat. Oakley is gentle with older kids, but fast-moving young children make him nervous. Any kids in the house should be teenagers or older, so they know not to lean on him or rough-house with him. We have to be careful not to injury his hips and knee, because he had knee surgery and has a bit of hip dysplasia. These things don’t seem to cause him pain or prevent him from playing. Oakley has bothersome air-borne allergies. This is usually a life-long condition. He does fine with anti-allergy pills, but he would probably be happier in a dry desert climate. We have placed dogs like him in the southwestern states, and their symptoms virtually disappeared. Due to his food allergies, he requires a diet free of grain and poultry. One snuggle from Oakley and you will be sunk. He says it all in that one head-first gesture, “Thank you for taking a chance on me, I already love you, and I’m yours forever.” SPIN Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere. All SPIN dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Priscilla! This precious, sweet Great Pyrenees girl was born around May 20, 2014. Pretty Priscilla was found as scrawny stray and taken into rescue. Since then, she has become beautiful, healthy, confident, loving, and affectionate. Priscilla had surgery to correct severe hip dysplasia on both sides. Because this leaves her in a fragile state, it would be best if her new home has no small children who could knock her down, and no large dogs that might want to play rough. We don’t want her tearing her scar tissue by wrestling or being jumped on. Her new home should have no slick floors, or at least have plenty of carpet and throw rugs to help her keep secure footing. Priscilla relishes attention. She is house trained and crate trained. She is not always comfortable sharing her space with other dogs, so she prefers to be your one and only lovebug. Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet marvelous Mitchell! He is an absolutely gorgeous Great Pyrenees born around April 16, 2014. And he is a big boy at 95 pounds! Mitchell exhibits nothing less than typical Pyr confidence, trust, and adaptability. He loves every person he meets. As a laid-back dude, he prefers the company of human adults over children; the young’ns bring too much excitement for his taste. He likes to play with his doggy companions in the cool of a morning, then he wants to chillax the rest of his day. One or two female canine playmates suit him just fine – no big animal crowds for this relaxed boy. He has one other favor to ask: can his dog playmates be Great Pyrenees? He doesn’t seem to like his Rottweiler foster siblings, while quite enjoying his Pyr buddies. Mitchell is house-trained and ready for his forever home. He still has a playful side but has left those puppy habits behind, so there’s need to worry about him eating your furniture or your slippers! Just don’t try to crate him – he absolutely will not go in a crate – and there’s no need for it in his case. His wish list is small. He just wants someone to keep him safe and love him unconditionally. Simple as that. Mitchell is available for adoption only in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Rocky! This sweet Great Pyrenees mix boy has a great profile, sporting a proud head and a deep chest. We think he was born around April 2015. He is a natural athlete and requires a yard with an 8 foot fence. He can jump right over a 6 foot one! Before coming into rescue, Rocky had been an outdoor dog his whole life (we think confined), and he was in rough shape from malnutrition and neglect . He was extremely thin and had a bad skin condition over his entire body and severe ear infection. He was skinny at about 90 pounds. He’s now eating well, putting on weight, and he is going to be a big boy once he's healthy! When his foster family picked him up from the shelter, they knew instantly that Rocky is a great dog. He got in the car and laid down right away. He was ready for some major pampering! Within an hour of getting to his foster home, he was playing with the family, flopping on his back for belly rubs, and coming right up to his new people for head scratches. He even gets along well with the two older dogs in his foster home. Rocky already knows the “sit”, “down”, “come” and of course “BELLY” commands. He is house trained and has free roaming privileges (no chewing, no marking). He does has “off limit” rooms, and knows “you wait”. He knows how to use the doggy door. He's even nice to cats! He is super gentle with children. He loves car rides and walks. His ever-wagging tail will help you find any loose door casing. Rocky will want to be at your side or lying at your feet 24/7 when you’re home. If you think your sub-woofer is making an odd sound, it’s Rocky. He’s not a big barker, but when he does, it is a noticeable, big, deep bellow. Rocky does not like being confined behind gates, left outside, or closed in a crate. He likes going inside his create as long at the door is propped open. He likes being outside, as long he can come back inside. He is not food protective, but will check out any bowls left alone….. and maybe anything left on the kitchen counter….hmmm. Rocky has a big heart, has been through a lot, and is making great strides toward becoming healthy and happy. He’s very trusting and just needs lots of love. Weighing in at 125 pounds, she is 1/2 Pyr, 1/4 Rottweiler, 1/8 Greyhound, and 1/8 terrier! Neffie was born around November 1, 2012 and has quite a bit of energy. Take her on a walk or to play outside, and you'll see her puppy side come out! When she’s done romping, she loves to be under your hand as much as possible, soaking up all the love you have to give. She is a couch cuddler most of the time. She is a low-maintenance girl and is super-eager to please. Neffie has bothersome air-borne allergies that cause her skin to itch like crazy. This is usually a life-long condition that can be controlled with allergy medicine. We have placed dogs like her in the southwestern states in the drier desert-type environment, and their allergy symptoms virtually disappeared. She was in rough shape before coming into rescue. Her allergies and itching caused various skin conditions from which she is recovering well. She had joint stiffness from years of lying on hard floors, lack of good care, and lack of exercise. It would be great if her new home doesn’t have stairs, and if it has carpet or rugs to help her get traction. Because of her large size, Neffie would do best in a home without small children. We don’t want them getting accidentally knocked down. She gets along well with other dogs. She would be happy with a doggie companion, or as an only dog. She’s even good with cats! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Dirk! This gorgeous Great Pyrenees boy was born approximately August 1, 2013. Dirk is a sweet soul who had a bit of a rough start in life - he has lost one hind leg. Dirk does not want you to feel sorry for him. He wants and needs a family who will treat him like a normal dog and provide him with a secure, stable life. Above all, he wants to be loved and be accepted and feel secure. Due to his past and his physical infirmities, Dirk will do best with humans who are experienced dog owners with knowledge of dog behavior and body language. He is not be suitable for a family with children with lots of activities and goings-on, because while Dirk can get around reasonably well on 3 legs, he is not nearly as physically strong or robust as his size might suggest. He also has high prey drive and thus cannot be in a home with cats or other small critter pets. Dirk is friendly to humans and is pretty responsive to basic commands (come, sit, down, crate, go) for a Pyr. He loves to be brushed: he is equally ok with a comb, undercoat rake, pin brush and slicker brush. Also, since he’s missing his hind leg, he particularly appreciates it when you give him nice scratches on the whole right side of his body a few times a day He is sensitive around his hip and tail area, so grooming around those areas should be done slowly and gently while taking cues from him, as he will let you know. Dirk can get along with other dogs, but they must be of a particular temperament. Dirk had little to no socialization growing up and spent a significant amount of his early life at the end of a chain. As a result, what he looks for in a canine companion is a male or female dog who is confident, laid back, nonreactive, and can anchor him and provide him with a sense of security. Dirk is not one for a novice dog owner. But if you are an experienced dog owner looking for a special soul to share your life with, please consider giving Dirk a chance at a love filled home that he deserves. Dirk is available for adoption in the Dallas/Fort Worth area only. SPIN Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Talon, and get ready to fall in love! He is just a big, beautiful, sweet boy at the perfect age with lots of good habits. We expect he was born around 3/1/2013. He even has is own Facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/OurTalon/ An example of a perfect Great Pyrenees, handsome Talon is well behaved, laid-back, playful, cuddly, and affectionate. He is house trained, dog door trained, good on leash, good at riding in a car, and knows his commands. [Note from Talon: My foster mommy DNA’d me. I’m 7/8 Great Pyrenees, so that’s where I get my majestic good looks and lovely Pyr-ee ways. I’m 1/8 something-from-the-hound-group. Foster mommy said, “So that’s where you get your squeaky, howly, bark! You sound like a Beagle!” And I said, “You’re squeaky!” She said, “Hee, hee!” And I said, “YIP!”] Talon has a condition called mega-esophagus. This means that his esophagus is weak and has trouble pushing food and water downward into his stomach. His food and water bowls must be elevated making him stretch his neck upwards to reach them. This allows gravity to help get the food and water moving downward, compensating for the weak esophagus. To manage the condition, he needs a special feeding chair called a Bailey chair. It keeps him upright while he eats and drinks. His foster mommy built one for him, complete with soft teal cushions all around. Since that one worked wonders, rescue heroes donated the funds to buy him a very fancy custom-ordered built-to-size one. Without it, Talon is at risk of his food moving in the wrong direction and entering his trachea and lungs which results in a potentially deadly inflammatory lung condition, called aspiration pneumonia. He is very happy in his feeding chair, and gets in it eagerly. If he is fed frequent, small meals, this is better for him. And his kibble should be small in size. Look in the dictionary under "adorable" and you will find a picture of Talon. This amazing dog lost his home when his mom became ill and could not care for him. He came to us all the way from Alabama, and he's a real Southern Gentleman. If you want a big Pyr with a heart of gold that everyone will love, Talon is your man. Hurry and apply; Talon will be scooped up fast because he is the dog everyone wants! SPIN Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
