Posted Breed: Greyhound (short coat). Hello – my name is Gracie and after all these years, I’m slowly discovering what life can really be like in an actual home. I never knew it could be so good! I get wonderful meals which I enjoy so much, if the weather is nice enough I get to go outside for a thing called a “walk”, and it’s just all so comfortable and warm with so much attention and affection! It’s so different from anything I’ve seen before, I can hardly believe it and it tends to frighten me at first until I can see it’s real and I can settle down – which I do very comfortably, by the way, on a soft bed. Now I’ve relaxed in my foster home, I’ve made another discovery……toys! Soft ones, and some of them even squeak! I like to carry them around and take them to bed, though it seems that the squeaky ones tend to disappear when it’s dark and my foster mom also goes to bed – haven’t figured that one out yet. No accidents in the house on my record – my foster sibling lets me follow her around and shows me what to do in this whole new world which I’m learning to love so much.

Greyhound

A.K.A. : English Greyhound
Overview: The Greyhounds are the fastest breed and require lots of outdoor activity. They're a great family members, enjoying lots of attention and affection from all.
Breed Group: Hound
Weight (lbs): male: 65-70, female: 60-65
Height (in): 27-30
Colors: Immaterial (includes black, gray, red, fawn, either solid or brindled, either whole colored or spotted).
Coat: Is smooth, close and short-haired. Firm in texture.
Character: Greyhounds are very sociable. When indoors, these dogs are lazy and relaxed. Outside, they show their high energy and stamina for action. Very intelligent, the breed is very closely bonded to their family.
Temperament: This breed chases things that move quickly, so they are not particularly suited for living in a home with cats. Although they are cautious around strangers, they are typically good with children and enjoy the company of other dogs.
Care: The Greyhound requires only occasional grooming with a very soft brush. The eats should be checked regularly and the claws should be trimmed.
Training: This breed is easy to train as long as the training is consistent and on task.
Activity: The Greyhound needs to run and walk for long distances every day.
Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Health Issue: This breed is prone to bloat, hip dysplasia, and ear infections. They may also have entropion, where the eyelids turn inward.
Life Expectancy: 10-12

More About Greyhound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Greyhound (short coat). We are loving this fun and playful young girl. She is doing great with her routine, loves daily walks, and chasing squirrels out of the back yard. Banjo is getting along great with other fur-kids, but she is reluctant to bond with her foster dad and may do best in a home without men. Her foster mom says that you have to be careful because this gorgeous and smart girl will steal your heart in an instant!

Posted Breed: Greyhound (short coat). City is currently in foster and doing great! She’s a cute girl – wants to be close and is affection ate and good with the other greys in the house . She’s food motivated but hesitant to take stuff from your hand. She’s already beginning to play with the toys, particularly the fluffy squeakers. We found that the trick to getting her up and down stairs – she hates to be led, pulled, or pushed – was to just entice her down and let her get bored enough to come back up. She enjoys her soft bed and sleeps through the night. We’ve b een walking her each morning and she’s enjoying seeing new stuff and has no problems going 2+ miles.
