Posted Breed: Irish Wolfhound / Newfoundland Dog / Mixed (long coat). This is a courtsey post. Please contact Sue.Hall@benojgundlachco.com or call 618-632-5344 for more information. Hi, my name is Lakota and I turned 5 years old this week. My breed was listed as mix newfoundland/irish wolfhound. I am not a big boy as I only weight 62 lbs. I am current on my shots as of last month. My heartworm check came back normal and I am on current heartworm meds. I will be coming from a home that has had so much love that I will be in need of a new home that can provide the same love, kindness and devotion that I am accustom to. I am not an outdoor dog and I do not know how to play with toys. I have had three other dogs to play with all of the time so I did not need toys. Over the past few months I have decided that I do not care for one of my brothers that I have lived with for the past five years. So we don’t hurt each other mom has decided it best to find a new home for one of us. I play fine with the other dogs and love having them around. We play and roll all over each other. I would probably be continent without another dog and enjoy the one on one attention. Cats and other species of animals would not be recommended. I do not like to sleep in a bed with my mom, but might be okay sleeping next to the bed after I get used to the idea of not sleeping somewhere close to my kennel. I love to lay on the air conditioning vents most of the days as they keep me cool with my long hair. I do know the command of go lay down, but you will have to show me where my new spot will be or I will get confused. I have two places at home right now. I have a rather springy butt so sit down doesn’t last very long for me. With a little practice and no other dogs for distraction, I feel I could learn all kinds of commands. I often cry when I get confused about what you want me to do. I want to make you happy but I am not always sure what you mean. Patience and understanding always help me when this becomes a problem. A gentle pat on the head and some insurance that I am not doing something wrong quickly corrects the problem. My mom wasn’t a very good teacher. She spoiled us way too much. I have never been around children and mom does not think that learning to play with them now would be a very good idea. Mom thinks the perfect home would be with just adults. I love people so much and people always say they would like to have me for a pet. I love to have my butt scratched and will dance all over the floor for you if you scratch it. I am a very polite eater and will not bite your fingers if you give me cookies. I am very protective of my own food bowl and prefer not to share it with other dogs. I am also very comfortable in my kennel and usually prefer to eat and sleep in there with the door open. I am willing to go in a kennel if you prefer me to be there for short periods of time while you are gone. I do not chew on anything but do occasionally like to have a rawhide bone. I need plenty of love because that is what my mom has always given me. She loves me so much!!! My mom is terribly ill and can no longer take care of all of us. Trying to find us a new home has been her last priority as she felt she would die rather than give us up. She has always adopted her dogs and shared her life only with all of us. Her home has only been full of dogs and nothing else, no family, roommates or friends. We made her very happy and content. As you can tell from my picture I do have long hair. I am not very receptive to having my fur brushed. I don’t like it! If there is anyone out there who could love me as much as my mom, I might be able to go home with you. There may be a little trouble adjusting to not having mom around, but over time and with enough love I may be able to get along without her. I know in my heart that she will never adjust to being without me. My mom cries a lot because we have to go and it makes her sicker to worry about us. If you would like to come visit me or take me home for the weekend to see if I could fit in, I think my mom would be okay with that. If you have questions about me and you want to talk to my mom please feel free to do so. Please don’t be discouraged if my mom cries all of the time, she just never imagined that she would have to part with her children. Although I told my mom not to let you in on this little secret, she felt that it would be in everyone’s best interest if she included this in the info. DO NOT EVER, EVER LEAVE THE TOILET SEAT UP!!! You will have many regrets if you do. I will apologize ahead of time should you somehow forget upon occasion. Mom thinks you will only do it once. My mom forgot to tell you that I have never had a collar on, nor have I ever been on any kind of leash. I have a one acre back yard with no entrance and exits, so I have always been allowed to run the yard. I am extremely well behaved in a car, so if you want to go for a drive, put me in and lets go hit the road. I will happily tag along for any ride as long as you never ever leave me in the car by myself. I get anxious and might tear something up if you leave me alone.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier

      Age: Adult
      Location: O Fallon, MO
Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier (short coat). Meet Luna, a one year old Staffordshire Terrier weighing about 50 lbs. She was found in a parking lot and after many different attempts to locate the owner, they never came forward. The vet thinks she may have been used as a breeding dog as she has had at least one litter of puppies. Luna is a very sweet, high energy lady who wants to please and loves everyone she meets. She gets along with other dogs but has not been tested around cats. She loves to play, especially with balls and toys and thinks kids toys are hers too. She is in a foster home with small kids and grabs their toys but you can take it out of her mouth with no hesitation from her. She does not resource guard her food or toys from people but she does seem to resource her food against other dogs so we just feed her separately. She is potty trained, house trained, and knows how to sit. She currently sleeps in bed with her human foster brother and enjoys putting her head on his pillow. She is currently in foster care with a boxer/mastiff mix, beagle/min pin mix, and poodle mix. She likes to wrestle and play chase with them but the poodle mix isn’t having it so she leaves him alone. She still has a lot of energy so should go to a home where someone is active with her (jogs, walks, etc). Because she likes to run, a fenced yard is required. Another playful dog would be a bonus. With her being high energy and strong, no kids under 10 years old (though she loves kids…. And their toys). All pets are spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and on a flea/tick preventative. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV and dogs are tested for heartworms. Adoption fee is $110 for cats and $150 for dogs. To meet this pet, please fill out a dog application or cat application. Not able to adopt? Inquire about fostering or sponsoring this pet. Posted Breed: Cairn Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Betty, a 3 year old Cairn / Chihuahua mix weighing about 7 lbs, who was rescued from a bad situation where she didn't receive the proper socialization. She is learning that people can be nice but it takes time and patience. She is starting to come around because she sees my dogs getting affection from me but she is still a bit leary of me. She will sniff me or lay by me but won't initiate wanting to be held or pet. She isn't a biter, she just runs away or hunkers down in fear. She is learning that treats are yummy and will come to me for a treat though I think she is following the lead of my other dogs. We are working on her going potty outside so that is a work in progress. She loves her four legged foster siblings and would play with them all day if they would let her. She will require patience and reassurance to build her confidence with people. She will require a home that has another dog, and a fenced in yard. All pets are spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and on a flea/tick preventative. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV and dogs are tested for heartworms. He was found as a stray in Texas County Missouri under a bridge after either being thrown out of a car or being hit by one and going off the bridge. Surgery was successful, but after several months of therapy, he still had no feeling in his leg or foot. The leg had to be amputated. He is going great and doesn't let 3 legs hold him back. He is very sweet and loving and needs a family of his own! He can be a little bossy with other dogs till he gets to know them, but he currently lives with 4 other ones and does fine. Dozer is a six year old male Catahoula Leopard Dog mix in search of a loving home. He is approximately 60 lbs and has beautiful markings. He is an affectionate and cuddly dog. He is fully house trained, non-destructive and listens to basic commands. He loves to play and go for walks, but does not require tons of activity. He is kind of a couch potato, especially if it is in your lap! He is currently living with a cat and has no problems. He does not like other dogs though, he wants to sniff them but does not like it when they return the hello. Dozer needs to live in a home that does not have children around. The unpredictability of children can make him nervous and he could snap at or bite them. After bonding with his new family he will be perfect dog for an adult family that wants a loyal, loving companion. He is fixed, healthy and up to date on vaccinations.
