More About Italian Greyhound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Pretty in pink and percolating with personality, wide-eyed little Ada may be a senior in years, but she’s a puppy at heart. The feisty 10-year-old, who weighs less than 7 pounds, is a pert and pint-sized ball of energy, and a constant source of love and laughs for her highly appreciative fosters. One of her most adorable "Ada-isms" is her riotous rendition of a prancing Clydesdale horse (in miniature) when she’s especially excited, and she’s never shy about ensuring that other dogs, large and small, adhere to the rules of the roost she thinks she rules! She may not like being held, but she LOVES being cuddled, lying in the sun, and lustily eating. A well mannered miss, she’s both crate and housetrained, and wants nothing more than to share her love with a warm and welcoming fur-ever home.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 300. Blossom Shapely head tilted, dark eyes warm and expression soft, former dog mama Blossom is living up to her name by blossoming beautifully in her foster home. Blessed with a sweet nature and friendly disposition, she LOVES to socialize with the other dogs, whether it’s playing or running around the backyard, and thoroughly enjoys both her toys and her chew bones. Also high on her list of loves is relaxing, being scratched and being held! As one of the Texas 60 (together with Katy who is also available for adoption) who entered our care, she’s regained her weight and her health, and her coat simply shines. Going to the door is her signal to potty, and although she does, on occasion, have seizures, she recovers from them quickly and well, with no lasting effects. Now on the hunt for affectionate adopters, she’s sure to blossom even more in the circle of their love.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound (short coat). Since I've been in foster care I've learned so much. My foster Mom tells me all the time that I'm the smartest boy she's ever met. I am a very good listener and I love to learn new commands. Anything my foster Mom asks of me, I'm sure to listen; especially if she gives me a treat. I LOVE treats and being told that I'm a "good boy". When my foster brother Dezi and I are out playing I love to do "zoomies". I run SUPER fast and he can never, ever catch me. He enjoys chasing me, but he'll never catch me. I'm 100% house and crate trained. I learned to ring the bell on the door when I want to go outside. I'm such a funny goof ball, that even if the door is open, I will ring the bell and sit by the door until my foster Mom tells me I'm a good boy....hehehe I get along with all my foster siblings, even Chip "the grumpy old man". He's 14 years old rat terrier and he is always grumpy. I like to give the pups kisses all over their faces and even he can not resist my charm. I struggle a little when I meet strangers. As long as they understand what I need and are patient I will come around and love them as much as I love my foster Mom. It just takes me some time to make sure everyone is worthy of my love. I am extremely lovable, and I enjoy being held, especially at night when things are quiet. Since I need people who understand and can maintain an "predictable" environment, a household with children is not the place for me. As much as I love to love them it's not a good situation for me. All in all, I'm a super sweet guy that needs a family who can understand my needs. In return I will fill your heart and home with love and joy. Rigby is not available for out of state adoptions nor will Rigby make a good apartment dog. Rigby will need a stable, calm environment with little/no social interactions. He must have a consistent, predictable and routine environment. He does not do well with spontaneous interactions and is fearful of people and situations that are not familiar. If he is faced with any situations that are fearful to him; he will respond with barking and/or lunging and nipping. It depends on the situation. If the threat is removed quickly he will have the ability to recover more quickly. If the threat continues, his threshold rises and he becomes more unpredictable and aggressive. Introducing Rigby to people he does not know is a slow process which requires patience, understanding and time. It may take him several meetings before he is comfortable with that person/situation. There are situations and people, that no matter how many times he encounters them, will always cause him to react in an undesirable manner. He seems to adjust and feel more comfortable with women. Not to say he is not capable of adjusting to men, it just seems to take longer for him to feel comfortable and trust them, if at all. There are triggers that make him anxious and unpredictable; for this reason he is not able to be around children. Rigby's training consists of clicker training and positive reinforcement. Always being rewarded for the desired behavior. He's very food motivated so both methods are very effective. He is eager to listen and follow direction which makes the training that much more successful. Consistency is key. In addition to training and consistent positive reinforcement of desired behaviors; Rigby is on medication. He takes 15mg of fluoxetine (Prozac) daily.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 325.00. Toby is a IG/Poodle mix (DNA done). DOB 10/17/2015 Black/White He is a VERY loving boy that is eager to please. He is still working on house training. He will crate for short periods of time but will be vocal about it in the beginning. He MUST have a minimum of a 6 foot wood fence (no chain link). He is a climber and a counter surfer. The counter surfing we are working on however the fence jumping/climbing would always be an issue and should NEVER be left alone outside unattended or taken to dog parks. Toby is one heck of a lover boy! Always wants a lap and to snuggle and give lots of kisses. He takes after the IG in that respect. He knows how to sit, shake and stay with a little patience. He tends to be a little food aggressive and needs to eat out of a slow feed bowl. He would do best in an active house with another dog his size or a little larger that loves to play. Toby loves toys and playing with other IGs both. He does have separation anxiety so being left alone all day and being an only dog is not a good option for him. He would do best in a home that someone is home most of the time as well as a doggy playmate.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound (short coat). Katy has made some huge steps since we brought her home for the first time. She wouldn't leave her crate for the first few days and would hardly eat. Her mouth was full of stitches after getting all but one tooth pulled. However, as the stitches dissolved, she began to take some bites of food. At first, she was struggling to keep food out of her nose, but now, she is a light, but great, eater and is even venturing into trying out hard food. Katy also recently learned how to take small treats from our hands; a huge feat for this timid girl! Slowly but surely, she is gaining more confidence. At first, she slept nearly standing up, like she was ready to bolt if anyone came close to her. We learned that she relaxed when we covered her with a blanket or T-shirt and began to sleep very peacefully. While she is still nervous about walking around and people coming near her, she conquered her fear of walking through the back door to come inside or go outside. Also, like Blossom, she is stretching her legs and enjoys running with our other dogs. Unfortunately she is still timid and nervous, although she is becoming more and more tolerant of people petting her, but holding is still very stressful for her. We are loving Katy's progress and her great strides towards gaining confidence.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound. I am an easy-going senior blue male who came from a hoarding situation with my sister, Minnie, but my gentle loving spirit and kind heart are intact. I love to be petted and I will follow you around in case you feel the desire to pet something. I also will check on you when you are at the computer to give your hand a break from the keyboard by petting me. I’m very considerate. Just sayin’. I’m a tall boy who is back at my perfect weight of 18 lb. Foster mom thinks I look handsome. She especially loves my goofy ear that tends to stand straight up most of the time. Foster Mom has added vitamins and oils to my diet and I have super soft fur once again. I had lost most of it from poor diet and being very underweight. You can pet me if you a truly wonderful experience. I desire nothing more than a cozy bed, food, water, and a loving human who wants to snuggle and pet me. I do love going for walks, and hanging out with the other dogs. I love people. And I’ve yet to meet a stranger. (Tail wag.) The resident cat doesn’t bother me so I guess I’m cat tolerant. There were cats at my previous place too. So? Have I convinced you to check me out? I’m ready to get this new chapter started with you. Zeke the Zekester

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I just know there's a lonely human out there in need of a sidekick, and I'm the perfect man for the job! My name is Lou and I love being around my people....wherever you go, there I am! I'm pretty easy-going, but I don't care much for large dogs or small people, so I would prefer a home with all grown-ups. Another small, furry companion would be just fine, but I'd be ok as an only child too. I must admit, I'm not very good with strangers....but once I'm told that we can be friends, I warm up pretty quickly. I know how to potty outside, and generally don't cause much trouble at home. With me around, you'll never have another dull moment because I love making my humans laugh. :) Watch out...if you're standing idle, I'll jump up and fling myself into your arms, because you KNOW you want me! :). Do you have a great sense of humor and an empty space on the couch? If so, give me a ring!

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound (short coat). Little Hunter is a tiny guy with a big personality. At 10 years young, there's still quite a bit of spring in his step.....and he's an excellent jumper! Although he is good with kids, we think he would do best in a family with a relaxed and low-key lifestyle, as he tends to be a bit skittish. He gets along well with other dogs, and would probably enjoy another small 4-legged companion in his forever home (he has not been cat tested). Hunter likes to use the restroom at his convenience, regardless of where he might be, so we are working on his potty habits.....he's about 75 percent there, and we are seeing improvement each day. Like his IG friends, Hunter is happiest when snuggling with his people on the couch or curled up in bed with them. Most of all, he is a charmer and a comedian!
