If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

But, don't let it fool you! Behind those beautiful eyes is a girl who loves attention; she's the first to give out hugs and kisses. You'll notice she grown into her own from the first young puppy photo displayed here. She will not get much bigger which makes here the perfect sized canine companion. Josey is always ready to run and play with her foster dog siblings of all sizes and gets along very well with all. She's young and still needs basic commands and leash training, but she is eager to please and very treat motivated. Please consider making this sweetheart part of your family!

Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Corgi / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Petrie for more information about this pet. Angel is a very playful little girl! She loves her people but needs consistency. She tends to be mouthy and likes to jump for attention. Someone who is firm and does not allow her to do that will have great success with this great pup. Keep in mind she is still young and needs training. She is a Corgi mix which is a breed that likes to boss the other dogs. Not usually an issue for my other fosters. Most of the time this is a very playful group in spite of Angel's bossiness. She has beautiful eyes and is housetrained. Angel is a happy little girl but needs her people attention. She loves her toys and will carry them around. She always seems to be smiling. She will be too much for most small children and will not be good with most small dogs for the same reason. She is crate and leash trained and rides well in the car. She is up-to-date on vacs and she is spayed. She is barkie at people she does not know, but overcomes that quickly due to her loving and playful nature! She would make a great dog for the right forever family!

Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher (short coat). Please contact Bruhn for more information about this pet. Ginger's favorite movie star is Greta Garbo. Like Greta, this spunky red Miniature Pinscher is happiest when she has a little personal space. Ginger is a senior girl (she won't admit her age) who enjoys being with other dogs and her people, even though she is very sparing with giving snuggles. She is keen on viewing her domain from the couch top, and enjoys walking on leash. She knows the ropes--she's crate-trained, sits and comes promptly when called. Ginger has left her stray days behind, and is grateful for her OPA foster, who has seen her through heartworm treatment and the removal of a benign lump. What Ginger wants is a family where she isn't forced to be a lap dog--she prefers to be the initiator, thank you very much. She would prefer a blanket-covered crate (privacy, you know) and acomfy bed to call her own. For her age, she is healthy and spry, and will be happy to sing for her supper. If you adore Min Pins, Ginger would like to interview you.

He is wonderful around other dogs, walks well on the leash, is house-trained and past all the puppy (chewing!) behavior but is still young and cute. He is loving and obedient and will make someone a very happy owner.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Shownes for more information about this pet. Hi!!! My name is Cooter and I am a sweet man. My foster mommy loves me so much and I love her because she hugs me and cuddles me a lot. I had a happy life with my owner until my owner died. I had a companion dog and we found ourselves in the animal shelter. I was scared because I didn't understand what was happening. My companion dog got moved to adoptions. I was so scared that they did not move me. I was lonely and didn't know what was going to happen to me. Why was I so disposable once the owner I loved died? Well, this nice lady came along and saw how afraid I was and she brought me home to live with her and other foster dogs until I can find my next furever home. I am a good boy. I am approximately 5 years old and just want to sit beside my owner and cuddle. My face looks like I am always worried, but I am always ok as long as my owner is around. I am house broken and really just LOVE being with my human. I would be a perfect fur baby for an older person who wants to have someone to watch tv with. I promise to give my new human more love than they can imagine. My foster mother says I am such a good boy and I deserve a nice home with my very own human.

She is altered, current on vaccinations, flea and heart worm prevention. She takes awhile to be ok around new people or animals but once she does get used to you she is forever by your side! She is a bit fearful of new situations and people and needs someone with patience to help her be the wonderful dog she can be!

Posted Breed: Black Mouth Cur / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). Stark’s Bio Stark is a beautiful young lady. She is very well behaved and wants to please. The horses do not phrase her. We take long walks in the pasture. She does not chase them. Stark plays well with my dogs, a Lab and Catahoula. There are some dogs that she does not like so if you have a dog we would need to introduce them. She loves to go on walks (I always had her on a leash). Loves to go on car rides. Rides well in my truck’s back seat (not the truck bed). Loves to swim. Rope toys, tough toys and stuffed toys are her favorite. The stuffed toys will not last long. She does not bark a lot. She sleeps in an extra large crate. The command to get in the crate is “load up”. Things you should be aware of: As with most shelter dogs, Stark has abandonment issues. It would be best if someone was home with her and not left alone all day while her parents are at work. When she first came home with me she would cry when I left her. She feels more secure when I crate her when I leave. When she was in the back yard and I was in the barn she would climb my four foot fence to be with me. She would not run off, she would just hunt me down. I increased my fence to six feet and she does not get out. Stark is a tall dog. A six foot fence would be best. Stark will make a wonderful companion dog. She needs a family that will love her and provide consistency in her life. She definitely left her paw prints on my soul. Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact McNeely for more information about this pet. Lucy is a sweet mama dog that had 9 babies in MCAS and was doing the best that she could in a stressful situation. Lucy is/was a great mama to her puppies and passes that watchful eye and protecting nature on the other dogs in her pack too. She feels that all the dogs around her are hers to watch out for and take care of -- she is very protective. This protective quality also extends to her/your home - she will help keep strangers out. In her down time Lucy is just a big couch potato who loves hanging out with her people and chilling. I do not know what her life was like before the shelter but I believe it was pretty rough. One look in her eyes and you can tell that for yourself - she has one eye that is a little cloudy and that slightly affects her vision but it does not slow her down! Lucy is house trained and dog door trained. She is heartworm negative and up to date on all her shots. She is not so great on a leash and pulls especially when she wants something. She knows sit but that is about as far as her knowledge of commands go. Cat - well they are just toys that run right? Seriously, she likes to follow the cat and if the cat runs she will chase but she has not tried to harm her once. It is just the running that catches her attention.

Posted Breed: Border Collie / Mixed (short coat). Sasha is a loving girl, it takes time for her to get used to new situations, she was found as a stray, she was very shy and scared at first mostly with men,but she is doing great now, at home Sasha is used to the routine, housetrained, sleeps in her crate all night and does not bark. I have 4 kids and another dog and she is great with them, when she meets a dog for the first time it take her a while to warm up to it. She needs to be introduced to new situations slowly, she is a good company at home and protective of her pack. I am teaching her how to walk on a leash as she can be unsure of how to behave around another dogs on a leash. Sasha needs a family that already has some experience with dogs, because she is still learning to adapt.
