Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Pug / Mixed (medium coat). ADOPT WITH PEACE OF MIND! Most of our adoptable dogs are trained, socialized and ready to love your family. They have lived at our home-based boarding, training and rescue facility where we have worked to fully assess them so that we can help you make a perfect match with your new companion. For over 15 years, we have worked with owners and dogs with training and rehabilitation. We bring these skills to our rescue program to help you and/or your family find the perfect new dog that fits your lifestyle, activity level, home environment and personality. We pride ourselves on working closely with you to not only find the perfect dog, but to provide service and care for you and your new companion after adoption. The majority of our dogs receive formal training and we do several obedience lessons prior to adoption so that you and your new dog can learn to work together and, equally or more importantly, bond prior to going home. You can read more about our adoption process below this description of this incredible, adoptable dog! We also off adoptions for senior and special needs dogs, small breed dogs that do not require training for adoption (but that can be trained at the adopter's request), and our new HomeBuddies program, which is FREE and helps harder to place dogs find loving homes and includes training. Our HomeBuddies adoptions will require strict screening and matching. These adoptions focus on dogs that are well-behaved and loving, but may have specific issues that have not responded to training. Some examples include socialization issues with other dogs or not being able to be around small children (not aggressive, but reactive to things like grabbing or quick jerky movements). These are loving dogs that deserve a chance at a forever home, but that will require special homes (i.e. no children, no other dogs, etc.). They each do include our 14 Day Off Leash Express program and the only expense is the cost of a remote collar that comes with the program (approx $200). ADOPTION FEES: Adoption with 28 Day OFF LEASH ULTIMATE TRAINING program $937.50 (dogs that will complete our full service training program normally priced $1749; includes 20% off boarding for life, private lessons for life, 24/7 support, remote training collar) Adoption with 14 Day OFF LEASH EXPRESS program $699.00 (dogs that will complete our full service training program normally priced $999; includes 20% off boarding for life, private lessons for life, 24/7 support, remote training collar) Small Breed without training (dogs under 30 pounds) $350 - fenced yard required Senior or Special Needs Adoptable $200 or negotiable based on dog and home (dogs 8+ yrs or dogs with special needs) Service Dog Candidates $450 (dogs leaving LILR and immediately entering service dog training; requires meeting with trainer) HOMEBUDDIES $FREE (INCLUDES our 14 day OFF LEASH EXPRESS program; difficult to place dogs that may have behavior issues that have not been responsive to training, but will still make great companions when matched with the right home; only expense is the cost of a remote training collar at $200) ***To find out which programs this dog is eligible for, please email info@lifeislabs.org as it varies with each dog, how long they've been with us and their general behavior and temperament. ALL ADOPTIONS INCLUDE: Full vaccinations, spay or neuter, parasite (fleat/tick/all worms) free, current on parasite prevention, microchipped, 20% off boarding for life at our facility. 24/7 access to us for anything you need related to your adopted dog. FULL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM ADOPTIONS ALSO INCLUDE: Unlimited private lessons for life and a remote collar. We do NOT do adoptions without our training program unless the dog is senior, special needs or a service dog candidate. OUR ADOPTION PROCESS 1. Complete our adoption application. It usually takes our volunteers 1-2 business days to process your adoption application. 2. Once your application is approved, set up a visit (by appointment please so that we can be available for you) to our facility to visit with the dogs that meet your preferences based on your application. You can visit more than once if you need more time to help choose a new companion. 3. Once you select your companion, we may do a home visit. 4. Complete an adoption contract. Dogs that are not receiving formal training can go home at this time. 5. For dogs who have been trained, we typically have two-three visits/lessons, with the last being the day you take your new pup home. This timeframe and the lessons can vary by dog and adoptive individual and family. FOR ADOPTIONS RECEIVING OUR FULL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM: THIS IS **NOT** your typical "pet store" or group class training. The result is a dog that you can enjoy in any setting and know that it's safe and a pleasure for everyone it visits with. You will be able to run, bike, hike, camp, garden and just plain relax with a dog that isn't going to run off or cause trouble. With the exception of seniors and special needs dogs, all of our adoptables receive either our "28 Day Off Leash Ultimate" or our "14 Day Off Leash Express" training program, which is available to the general public. If you are adopting a puppy, they will go home with you and then come back around 6-8 months to complete their training. Our training program includes behavior training, socialization and obedience training. When dogs complete our program, they will walk with you both on leash and off, we have addressed any manners/behavior issues that would cause problems in their new homes and they will come when called reliably off leash. Some dogs do have lingering issues that we fully disclose -- the most common is dogs that can jump 4' fences (which is probably why they ended up in the shelter in the first place!). When you come out for lessons, our typical lessons are: 1) leash walking, 2) gate and door manners, 3) coming when called to all family members and sitting upon arrival, 4) going for a walk off-leash with family and staying safely in the general area and returning immediately when called. Your new dog is ready to go home when we've completed the lessons and both you and we are confident and comfortable with your new pup's relationship and response to you and your family. Our adoptions with full service training include a dog that is: Spayed or neutered Current on all vaccinations Clear of parasites (heartworm, flea, tick, worms, etc.) Current on all parasite prevention (heartworm and flea/tick prevention) Microchipped On a high-quality food (Merrick Whole Earth Farms) Fully assessed for temperament and behavior Crate trained Fully trained through our "28 Day Off Leash" (reg $1749) or "14 Day Off Leash Express" (reg $999) training program -- for dogs eligible for training These adoptions also include: Private lessons prior to adoption and UNLIMITED private lessons as needed once adoption is complete (for dogs that have completed training) 20% off boarding at any of our facilities for life Unlimited access to us for advice and assistance for ANYTHING you need in relationship to your adopted dog The nature of our rescue program requires that dogs are with us typically 2-3 months from the time we take them into our program. During this time, they are living in and around our home with a variety of other dogs, cats, cows, people and general activity. We are assessing them 24/7 so that we know them very well and can confidently help you make the perfect match for a new companion. And we are training them daily (once they are happy and healthy) to prepare them for adoption. Payment arrangements can be made in the form of 50% down at the time of adoption and the remaining 50% in one month from that date. We understand that some people are shocked by this adoption fee. Please understand that this is NOT about making money. We care for 40 or more dogs in our program on a daily basis. All of our dogs are here typically 2-3 or more times longer than most rescues in other programs. We feed them high quality food, administer parasite prevention and provide food, toys, bedding, crates and a staff that helps care for them while we assess their behavior and temperament and conduct training. ALL of the proceeds from our adoptions go directly back to our rescue program. NONE of the adoption fee goes to us for training or boarding. Our adoption fee was set by taking a traditional adoption fee of $250 and then adding our commercial training program at half price (687.50 -- when it was originally $1375). We originally offered the training as an option. Almost every adopter did the training. The few that didn't were calling with behavior and training issues. We felt that there is a value to our training, both to the adopter, but even more importantly to the dog. We want our dogs to be LOVED and to become INSEPARABLE members of the family. We don't want them to cause stress or frustration. So in early 2011, we decided that all of our rescues would be trained. We hope that most people can see the value in the training and we encourage you to come out to visit and see the training in action if you are a potential adopter that's skeptical or on the fence. This is not traditional sit/stay training. This is training that will give you a well-balanced dog that is a pleasure 24/7. They are not little robots and they are not 100% without fault. But when you have a dog that you can travel with, hang out with, go to the mailbox with and that your friends and family can enjoy, we know that we've done our job by matching you with a dog that's a true companion and not just a pet... For more information, please email info@lifeislabs.org. PLEASE DO NOT CALL. Email is best for initial inquiries as it is difficult for us to spend time on the phone with all the work we have to do with the dogs. Thank you!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hi! I'm Lucas. When I first got here, I came down with parvo and was very, very sick for a while. It got even worse when I got a respiratory infection while I was trying to fight the parvo. Everyone was shocked when I finally got to go home after almost two weeks. But I made it! I'm a fighter and just a wonderful dog with a big heart. And I'm pretty darn good-looking, too! I'm surprised I haven't been adopted yet because I feel like I'm a really great dog that will make a wonderful buddy for almost anyone. I love to run and play and have lots of great friends here. I'm really well-behaved. I listen well and I'm even allowed outside the fence to go swimming at our lake here. I'm really athletic and I can jump a 4' fence so it's safest for me if you have a 6' fence or don't leave me outside alone. I would love to be with an active person or family who can keep me busy retrieving, swimming, running or hiking. But I'm also cuddly and affectionate, so I need that too. Do you think you can give me the home I deserve? Please come visit me soon! ADOPT WITH PEACE OF MIND! Most of our adoptable dogs are trained, socialized and ready to love your family. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hi! I'm Fango and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with me? I've been to adoption days and everyone says how cute and well-behaved I am, but nobody ever comes for me. I'm happy here, but I really want my forever home. I really don't have any bad habits. I'm cute. I'm a perfect size. I'm gentle and I love to play. I play with all kinds of dogs and I'm gentle with babies and kids. I love toys and I love to run. But I'm trying to figure out what else I can do to find a loving home? Do you have any ideas for me? I'm a very good boy that listens well and I sleep nicely in my crate at night. I'm well-behaved all day and I play really nicely with everyone. I know I'd be a great dog for a loving person or family. I don't need much, just some love, toys and room to run. Do you think you could give me a shot? Please give me a chance, I'd love to meet you! ADOPT WITH PEACE OF MIND! Most of our adoptable dogs are trained, socialized and ready to love your family. Thank you!

Posted Breed: Rottweiler / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Hi! I'm Pam and I come with my best friend Pat as a pair! Our adoption fee is negotiable, even though we're both fully trained! We LOVE each other and are best friends. We play almost all day and love it. I get along with some dogs, but Pat doesn't get along with any males and even some females. Since we are best friends, we get our own playtime. And we are always excellent with each other, just like best friends should be. You would want us to be your only dogs and you would be so happy with us. We are both affectionate and super sweet and we do listen really well. Pat actually almost became a search dog because he's so talented. We both love toys and love to retrieve. And we're both great in the house. I get scared of storms, so please don't leave me outside. I'm absolutely fine if I'm inside, especially if I'm with you. We are both beautiful dogs and deserve a loving home. We are lots of fun and very affectionate. We keep one another busy but are also gentle and sweet with people. We both love to run and play and need exercise to wear us out. We hope we can find a loving home with a nice big yard with a 6' fence since Pat can jump 4' fence and I can climb it. We just need some room to run and someone to love us and let us cuddle up inside on the couch. Is that you? We promise we are sweet dogs. And they love us so much here that our adoption fee is negotiable so that we can go together to a loving home. We hope you'll come visit us and give us a chance to show you how much fun and how much we'd love to be your dogs! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hi! I'm Lola and I was rescued from the side of the road by some loving people who then brought me here to find my forever home. I'm a petite and yellow and have all the great qualities of a Lab in a nice, small package. When you come to meet me, you'll see I'm gentle and well-mannered. But I'm also playful and friendly. I'm so friendly and smart that I'll listen to you right away as if you are already my family! I get along with all the people and dogs that I meet. I love everyone and hope they will all pet me when I show them how smart and well-behaved I am. I also hope they'll throw me a ball or toy! And maybe there's another dog around that I can play with. I'm really good about sleeping in my crate at night and I love to run and play with my friends. I'm happy doing just about anything and I'm also a really great housedog. I lived for a while with two other dogs and children, so I'm used to living in a busy home. But I'd be happy almost anywhere as long as someone would take me home and love me! Please come visit me soon! ADOPT WITH PEACE OF MIND! Most of our adoptable dogs are trained, socialized and ready to love your family. Thank you!

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hi! My name is Sophie! I was too scared to come online and write this, but everyone here has helped me realize that I don't have anything to be afraid of and it's time to find a family! I was abandoned and running scared for several months in a neighborhood. Someone who lived there was really worried about me. She didn't want me to go to the pound. So she tried to catch me for months and months, but I didn't know I could trust her. I kept running away. One day, I gave up because I realized she seemed gentle and nice. She took me into her home for a couple of months until I could come here to Life is labs. I was so scared of everything. They had to clip my toenails and stick needles in me. I was scared to death, but I never offered to bite anyone because I had hoped that someone would love me. After just a few short days of hanging out with my new friends, I realized that people did care and I started to relax. Now I run the show! When you meet me, I will come up and roll over most likely. I'm just showing you that I'm really sweet and gentle. I'm good with people and kids of all ages. I can be a little hesitant at first, but it's just because of my past. I relax quickly once I realize nobody is going to hurt me or chase me away. I'm really great in my crate and I love playing with all my dog friends here. I would love a brother or sister about my age (a year or so?) or one that's just brave and playful. And I would love a family to cuddle with me. I'm really easy to take care of. I don't shed a lot. I'm quiet most of the day, but I will let you know if someone just shows up out of the blue. Won't you come visit me? If you want a sweet, easy, little girl -- that's me!!! Please come see me soon! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Hi! My name is Ellie! I was wandering around scared and hungry in the middle of nowhere, Alabama. Nobody wanted me and everyone was shooing me away. I really had nowhere to turn. And then a nice lady took me in and made arrangements for me to come here to Life is labs. I'm not gonna lie, I was SCARED TO DEATH to get in the car and make the trip. They could hardly even get me into the big play yard through the gate because I was panicking. Once they got me in, they just let me wander and relax at my own pace.... for a LONG time... Like three weeks... It took me a few days to realize they weren't going to hurt me. I started approaching them and realizing that they loved me and wanted to pet and feed me. More and more, I grew to trust everyone here. I made new dog friends every day. I was comfortable with all of them from the beginning and they understood why I was scared. They helped me become braver and braver. I finally started coming inside where I found my new crate and I LOVE it! It's my little safe haven. I have a nice big quilt to lay on and bones and toys to chew. Now I've started meeting more and more people. You'd be surprised, because some people think I look like a big, mean, black dog, but I'm just gentle and sweet with everyone and everything. If anything, I'm still sometimes a little nervous. But most of that has passed. And especially if you're patient with me and don't try to force new things, I'll get more and more confident every day. I now wiggle and wag my tail excitedly when I get attention. I will put my feet up on the fence rail to say hi to you if you're on the other side. I don't have a mean bone in my body. I never make a mess and I'm not destructive or noisy. My once scraggly, dirty coat is now thick, fluffy and beautiful. They have taken such good care of me here. I feel so good and healthy now! I'm ready for my new home and family. I'm a very easy, gentle dog. I actually do like to play fetch sometimes, too! I'm good with all other animals, of all sizes and shapes. I could fit into almost any family that would love me! Is that you? Please come and visit me soon! ADOPT WITH PEACE OF MIND! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Hi! My name is Hank! Even though I can't see you, I know you're saying "something looks wrong with his eyes!". That's because I'm blind. I have a condition called Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). You can read about it HERE. I have most likely been blind most of my life. Although PRA normally causes dogs to go blind between 5-7 years of age, my case is different. I'm only a few years old, give or take. My eye doctor thinks I've been blind most of my life. You'd think I know when I went blind, but dogs can't tell time! I just know that I've never had a problem getting around and having a happy life. Would you believe I like to go swimming too??? You just need to be very careful and help me know where the shore is and call me if I get confused. Also, because I'm so brave, I just GO! I do try to stick close to you, but I'm not afraid to wander around. So you need to help keep me away from sharp objects, places I could fall, or things that could otherwise hurt me. I'm not afraid to jump on on things, either. When I went to the eye doctor, there was a bench. Kristie sat down and I jumped right up beside her! It's almost like I can see sometimes. I've really learned how to gauge things and it makes me happy to be confident no matter where I am. I'm an awesome house dog. I just need to learn where things are. I'm housebroken and get along with everyone. I DO get really excited when other dogs get excited and I'll sometimes bump into them and bark excitedly. Some dominant dogs don't like that so I have to be careful. I do like to play, too, with a lot of different dogs. I have to listen for their breathing and barking to figure out where they are, but it works! I'm also very, very sweet. I'm the ONLY dog here that is allowed to jump. I will jump and give you a gentle hug. It may happen when you aren't expecting it, but it's my way of knowing that you are paying attention to me and I can get some affection. I don't mean it the same way most dogs do when they jump and try to knock you over. I hope you will let me give you hugs too! I hope you will come visit me soon and not count me out because I'm blind. I can do everything other dogs can do. You just have to make sure I stay safe while I do it! Please come visit me soon - I can't wait for my new family! OH -- I DO REQUIRE A YARD WITH A FENCE. Not all the dogs here do. But it's just for my safety because sometimes I'm a little too brave! Thank you!

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat).
