Posted Breed: Pointer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Meet our big boy Geronimo. He may be a big boy, but he is just a big goofball at heart. He weighs about 70lbs and is tall, but that is just a big hunk of lovin. He is a real sweet boy who loves to play and get as much attention as he can get. He appears to be some kind of Pointer mix and is only about 1-2 years old. His coat is very smooth and shiny and makes him quite the handsome fella. Since Geronimo is still young, he has plenty of energy and would make a good running partner. Geronimo gets along with all dogs he's met and played with, but we haven't had him with any bossy boys yet. He's been in play groups with 3 or 4 other dogs and does great, playing like a pup. Geronimo is a smart boy too and should be very trainable. He just wants to be friends and get some love. Please consider opening your heart and home to this boy, he won't disappoint. Geronimo is up to date on vaccines, neutered and microchipped. Please contact us at info@scoutshonor.org if you are interested in foster or adopting this precious furbaby! You can read all about our foster and adoption process, as well as make a donation for care, on our website at www.scoutshonor.org. As always, Scout's Honor pays all costs associated with fostering, and if requested, the foster can receive a tax deduction receipt from Scout's Honor for all of his or her own documented expenses related to fostering.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Looking for a spunky fluff-ball? May'tan is your girl! When we first met this babydoll at Harris County Animal Control she was beyond terrified and could not even walk on her own, she had to be carried outside. We can't blame her - that's a scary place for a dog to end up. Well, weeks later after we rescued her she has come out of her shell it is just a ball of fun! She is young, maybe 2 years old, and would probably love to have a playmate. She seems to always have a smile on her face and loves attention! I am currently heartworm positive (not contagious) but please don't let that keep you from meeting me. Scout's Honor is treating me through the "slow-kill" method of treatment and they would be more than happy to discuss it with you. Please help us find the sweetheart a foster while she waits on her forever home. She's so sweet and loving, she'd be great for just about any family.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Look at these beautiful girls!!! These beauties were set to be euthanized this past Friday, but now they are Scout's Honor girls. Margo is Black and Tan. Mallory is the blonde. These girls were so worried. Wanting so badly to trust but not knowing how they had gotten where they were. They hopped up for their freedom ride, rode beautifully, and now know they are safe and they are full of tail wags and tons of hugs!!! Both girls are said to be about 2 years old, heartworm negat ive, and healthy. But we will know more as soon as we get them to our vets. They are clearly hounds, maybe plott, or maybe mix but definitely hound. If you would like to foster or adopt these beauties visit scoutshonor.org and fill out an application. They are quite amazing!!!!

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Clapton! The stories this darling boy could tell if he could talk. Clapton had been living in a bad area of Houston with his buddy Pattie in poor conditions for quite a while. Recently, someone picked both of them up and took them to BARC (Houston pound). Unfortunately, once turned in in their bad conditions, they only had 72 hours until they were to be euthanized. Luckily for them, we were able to quickly figure out where they could go and sent someone to pick them up. They are now safe and resting comfortably, getting the love and care they need. Clapton is an adult Lab mix and weighs about 65 pounds right now. Clapton is very sweet and friendly and rides great in the car. Clapton is so happy! At the boarding facility he gets so excited when anyone comes to see him. His whole boy just wiggles. He's such a lover and loves to lean on your and cuddle. He's great with his friend Pattie and seems fine with other dogs of any size. He's just a bundle of happiness!! Clapton had entropean when we rescued him and he likley had been dealing with that his whole life. It is so miserable - it's where your eyelashes literally rub on your eyeballs! Painful!! Well, Clapton had surgery a few weeks ago to correct this and he can SEE for the first time ever!! Gosh, you can tell he's so happy and appreciative! What we really need for this sweetheart is to get him into a loving foster home while he waits on his forever home! If you can foster or adopt Clapton, please give him a chance and let him into your home. We promise you that you won't be disappointed. His best bud Pattie has landed herself an amazing home and now it is Clapton's turn!!

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Meet little Nathan! This little fellow was so very scared at the pound and that was almost his death sentence. We saw this little guy cowering in the corner of his kennel just shaking and not making any eye contact. Well, Nathan is just our type of rescue! Once we got him out of the kennel, he loosened up a little, but it was not until he made his canine friends (some of the other dogs we rescued that day) and saw them interacting with us that he came out of his shell. Nathan is a young guy, maybe a year and clearly has not been treated very well by humans. He's a calm, very loving little guy once he warms up and would do best in a home with at least one other dog to give him the confidence he needs. He's just as cute as he can be and would make a great pet for a loving home!

      Breed: Rottweiler

Posted Breed: Rottweiler (short coat). Meet our girl Pattie! Pattie had been living in a bad area of Houston with her buddy Clapton in poor conditions for quite a while. Recently, someone picked both of them up off the street and took them to BARC (Houston pound). Unfortunately, when turned into BARC in their poor conditions, they were only given 72 hours until to make it out alive! We saw what had happened and scrambled to get the resources in place to be able to rescue them. They are now safe and resting comfortably, getting the care and love they need. Pattie is an adult Rottweiler and weighs 70-80 pounds right now. She will need to put on a few pounds to fill out and get healthy, but she wont get any bigger as she is full grown. She is VERY sweet and friendly and rides great in the car and did great on her freedom ride from the shelter. This lovely lady will love on anyone who will let her. She's just the happiest girl, despite the horrible predicaments she found herself forced into. She is great with her buddy Clapton and seems fine with other dogs in general. True to her breed, she just wants to make everyone happy! Pattie has some skin issues, but those will clear up with a little bit of time and medicine - it's just poor nutrition and bad living conditions. She is not contagious - just missing some hair. If you can foster or adopt Pattie, please give her a chance and let her into your home. We promise you that you won't be disappointed.

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Sheep Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Bonita is a lovely older girl who has had a tough life. Turned into the pound and confused on why she was there all of a sudden, she is looking for a loving, understanding home who can introduce her to the joys of living with a family who will love and cherish her. All she asks is for someone to take her on nice walks and be there to provide the human company she so desperately wants. New owners will need to be understanding and allow Bonita to settle in and come out of her shell in her own time. If you can give her plenty of much needed TLC as an adopter, we’d love to hear from you.

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Smooth Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet our ever-so-sweet Ms. Peaches. She is absolutely precious!!! Poor Peaches was an owner surrender at BARC while we were there during operation shelter pull. She was absolutely terrified! Her heart was pounding through her chest and she was drooling like a mastiff. This poor baby deserved so much better so we snatched her right up! Peaches is a precious 15 pound dachshund mix. She is just about 2-3 years old. And she is heartwom negative. Peaches would do best in a home that has another dog. She really feels most comfortable when she can take her cues from a canine buddy. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Meet darling Lizzy! For those Labby lovers out there this sweet girl is a catch! Lizzy is a larger size yellow lab mix. She is a very sweet girl who is a little timid right now, but oh so sweet. She is an older girl that probably had a home and ended up on the streets and is now just confused. Our vets think she is probably about 6 years old. Lizzy wants nothing more that a calm quiet place where she can relax. She does love to play though and does great with other dogs. She's the best of both worlds - calm, but can be active. Please consider giving this sweet lady the second chance she deserves.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Meet King, a 15-year-old lab that was dumped at the pound by his "owner". He has a massive basketball sized tumor between his front two legs that impedes his ability to walk. His owner claimed she had no money or transportation to do anything about this basketball-sized tumor impeding her dog’s walking. Amazingly she was able to dump him at the pound so he could die alone. This didn’t happen overnight!! King is as sweet and goofy as they come. It's sickening that he’s been forced to carry this horrendous appendage around like a ball and chain. King is 15, but he sure doesn’t act it. This boy has plenty of pep to this step. He such a sweetheart and would be such an easy foster! He's doing great and is in a foster home. His surgery went very well and we just received all of the biopsy results. Pretty good news overall, but we are definitely thankful that we had the large mass on his chest and the tumor that was found when he was neutered removed. Turns out the large mass on his chest was a mast cell tumor but our vets got clean margins, so we are optimistic that we got everything and it had not spread. The tumor on one of his testicles was a Sertoli tumor – biggest concern for spreading elsewhere – to prostate and/or surrounding lymph nodes. 10-14% of these metastasize. Our vets got complete excision with clean margins. We know he feels a million times better now that he is able to walk without the obstruction of the large mass. He is such a sweetheart! Now, we need to find this great boy a forever home to live out his years. Please complete an adoption app at www.scoutshonor.org.
