More About Labrador Retriever Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Check out my ears! Aren’t they awesome?! I can hear all sorts of stuff. I’ve even heard people mentioning these ‘forever homes’. I hope to find mine very soon! My foster parents have been calling me Nina and they say I’m a loveable two-year-old terrier mix and weigh around 50 pounds. I love playing with my foster parents and new fur-sisters. My foster sisters and I get along great. We share all kinds of cool toys and snuggle at night! They’ve been teaching me new tricks and they let me know that I’m a quick learner. My foster parents are always bragging about me and giving me compliments. This makes me super happy, because I have lots of love to give and I can’t stop smiling! Admittedly, I might be a little bit of a people-pleaser, but I’m also very independent. I love to be outside and occupy myself in my new fenced-in yard. But there’s a big world to explore so I’m polishing my leash skills. I would love to meet you. I’m a little shy around new people, but I know we’ll be friends in no time. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. If you like to unwind at the end of the day by snuggling on the couch and catching up on your favorite TV shows, I'm your girl! I would love nothing more than to curl up in your lap or next to you. My second favorite activity is going on walks. I am house trained and leash trained, and my foster parents say I trot around the neighborhood like I own the place. I think that means they like my confidence and peppy attitude. I love treats, which has helped me to learn some new things since I moved in with my foster parents. I know sit and down, and I'm learning how to give high-fives. They say I'm a good listener! I would prefer to live in a quiet home without children or cats. In general, I need some time to warm up to new dogs and people. My foster mom says I have "stranger danger syndrome," which means I don't like when people reach out to pet me before I get to know them. I do best meeting new friends in chill, low-key environments, where I can move at my own speed. But once I've had a chance to get to know you, I am super affectionate and love to sit in my friends' laps. Posted Breed: Feist / Chihuahua / Mixed. Hi! My name is Corey! I have a few funny nicknames, like Coreysaurus :) I am a senior about 11 years old, and weigh around 17 pounds. My favorite things to do include: burrowing under blankets, sleeping, and going for walks! My foster mom says that I am great on a leash and that I am a very smart and sweet boy. I love humans and saying hi to new people! I also like to hide and take naps in small hidden places, like under your bed, or in the back of your closet. I like small cozy spaces, so I'm pretty good in my crate if you need me to go in. I do tend to "sing" when you leave me, at least for a few minutes, just because I miss you, but then I calm down and go to sleep. I love to be held, and will even let you hold me like a baby! I may be a senior citizen, but I have a great happy personality with lots of tail wags! My foster mom gives me toys from time to time and I like to play with them (just for a few minutes, and then it's nap time!). I've been with Hope Animal Rescue longer than most of the other dogs here, and I'm not sure why. I'm such a great catch! Low maintenance, well behaved and trained, a great companion. Maybe you'd like to meet me? Apply to adopt at: https://www.petstablished.com/adoption_form/4128/generic Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued pet! Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Meet Kodi, a girl with a sweet, gentle, and funny personality. Kodi is such a happy dog and she'll always be doing something to make you laugh. She is fully trained to walk by your side, sit, down, stay, recall, and shake. Kodi gets so excited to bounce around outside and play with her foster dad. She loves to do sprints and recalls, but she's not a fan of long distance runs. Give Kodi a plush squeaky toy and you will make this girl even happier. She will carry it around and squeak it just for fun. Kodi currently lives with her foster family and her four-legged foster brother, Blu. Kodi loves being around Blu, but does not care for playing with dogs. She is not rambunctious, but is instead very gentle natured and feels much more comfortable with slow, calmer introductions to new dogs. Kodi does great with all of her foster family, and warms up quickly with the right people. She needs an experienced owner that will strongly advocate for her needs and give her the right guidance to keep her stress free. Give Kodi personal attention and patience and you will see what makes her so great to be around. Posted Breed: Black Mouth Cur / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Meet Ozzie! Ozzie is a young lady who loves the three P's: people, playtime, and peanut butter. Ozzie is enjoying life outside of the shelter where she can curl up on her dog bed with a nice chew toy, and run around in the yard with her people and dog friends. This lovable girl has hyponotizing hazel eyes and loves to cuddle- even though she is 50+ lbs, she thinks she is 100% lap dog! Ozzie has gone through formal training with a professional trainer and is continuing to work on perfecting good manners with her foster family - especially learning to respect other dogs' and people's personal space - but she is eager to please and makng good progress! Ozzie loves other dogs but her big personality and enthusiastic play style suggests she would do best with easygoing dogs close to her size or larger. Ozzie will be a great, loyal companion for an active pet-lover or family who loves to laugh; she "talks" to other dogs while she's playing, does the moon walk, and likes to toss her toys in the air to play her own game of "fetch."
