I'M PART OF A SPECIAL ADOPTION PROMOTION SO MY ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $100 $150 adoption fee includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness. Rocket was adopted from Furry Kids as a puppy and returned because he kept escaping his family's yard by jumping their fence. We have also learned that Rocket is not good with cats. When he was returned, his nails were extremely long and they are being cut back gradually to allow the quick to recede. Shortly after he was returned, we also discovered that he was heartworm positive. He has been treated for the heartworms and if kept on prevention should have no ill effects from them. Rocket does well with most dogs, but will stand up for himself if another dog tries to dominate him. He is crate trained, he is housetrained. Rocket loves people and wants to please you in any way he can. Rocket has been neutered, treated for heartworms, is current on vaccinations and is microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Rocket, please fill out the adoption application located at www.furrykidsreufge.org/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will get back with you as soon as possible. Thanks for your interest in Rocket. Furry Kids' Refuge is in need of good quality dog and puppy food with meat as the first ingredient. More About Labrador Retriever Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Neil was pulled from a local shelter that was very full. He tested positive for heartworms, but has been treated and is ready for adoption now. He has no ill lasting effects to his health and is ready to be some lucky family's awesome companion. Neil is in a foster home and is completely house trained! Being a senior, Neil would do best in a quieter home without young children..... children 10 years old and older would be best. Neil is a absolute sweetheart who enjoys snuggling against his foster family while watching TV or he snuggles in his favorite chair and sleeps hard. Neil may be a senior but this baby also loves to play fetch !!! He is a awesome fetch and return doggy. Neil will play until you give up.....he won't !! Neil's foster mom says he is a wonderful foster dog and they enjoy him a lot. They have found out that when it storms he gets nervous and so they put his Thunder Shirt on him and he immediately chills out. Neil really deserves a forever loving family. Neil is cat friendly. He visited the neighbor cat next door and he ignored it even when the cat got up in his face...when the cat was playing laser and jumping around him, he did not care. He hung out there for 2 hrs no problems. Neil has been neutered, vaccinated, treated for heartworms and is on monthly prevention to ensure he remains healthy. Posted Breed: Pointer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Approx. DOB: 7/15/13 Approx. Wht: 60 lbs. Adoption fee is $150 and includes a 2 week trial to help ensure everyone's happiness. ~~~~~~~~~~~~NO CATS !!!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carmen was the mommy of our 11 "C" litter puppies....they have all been adopted. Carmen is the sweetest, most gentle dog you will ever meet. Carmen and her 11 puppies were taken in from a local shelter when her puppies were only 2-3 weeks old. She proved to be the most devoted, caring mommy we have ever had the pleasure of taking in. Carmen is now in our private boarding facility waiting for a foster home to open up. Could you be her foster family ? We will provide you with all her food , vet care, crate, etc and you provide a loving home for her to learn basic house manners and rules. It's totally up to you on how long you foster her.....until she gets adopted or just to give her a break from boarding. Carmen loves PEOPLE !!!! She always loves the children who pet her at our adoption events and she loves meeting the adults who just want to pet her and talk to her kindly. Carmen is very strong when she is walking on a leash and needs obedience classes to teach her and her new family how to properly walk her.....without her pulling. We do supply our new fosters and adopters with help such as "no pull" harnesses, Gentle Leaders and other types of harnesses that are suppose to curb the dog from pulling. Carmen does well with non aggressive male dogs. She wants to be the boss so the female dogs don't usually work out with her. Carmen has appeared to have had other litters of puppies in her past so this tells us she was left outside a lot, more then she should of been. With this human neglect in her past she still loves us humans and wants us to be in her life. Give this sweet momma girl a chance !!!! Carmen has been spayed, heart worm tested negative, vaccinated, wormed, micro chipped and if you would like to meet/adopt/foster this sweet girl please fill out a application at furrykidsrefuge.org/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will be in touch. I'M PART OF A SPECIAL ADOPTION PROMOTION SO MY ADOPTION FEE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $100 $150 adoption fee includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness! ~~~~~~~~~ Children can be stressful for KC so they must be at least 10 years old or older ~~~~~~~~~~ KC was surrendered to Furry Kids' when his owner had to move into an assisted living facility and could not take his dogs with him. KC does not like being in a crate/kennel. KC came from a home with another little dog, but while in a foster home for Furry Kids, displayed some aggression towards an older dog in the home over the food bowl, so he would definitely need to meet any dogs he might be living with to be sure they get along. Children can also be stressful to KC, so he should not go to a home with small children (under 10). KC is so loving & sweet and would make a great companion to some lucky family. He would be a great walking buddy or jogging partner. KC is housebroke....BONUS !!! Just give this sweet boy a chance. KC doesn't show well at pet adoptions because of being in the crate and having the other dogs walking by his, so we will have to meet away from Saturday pet adoptions to show you his true, sweet self. KC has been neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative and microchipped. Sign me up! - Kids 12yrs or older, non-dominant dogs Not my favorite - Cats, dominant dogs Hi there! My name is Bandit! I’m a very lucky dog because this really nice lady saved me from a local kill shelter when my time was up!! WHEW!! That was close…:-) She gave me this name because of the markings on my face. I think I’m a pretty cool looking dude, don’t you? I'm very friendly and I love to play! I love when my foster mom talks to me and shows me lots of attention. I do okay around children but I probably would do best with school age kids, 12 or older, because I might be too much for the smaller ones when I get excited. My foster Mom says I’m a little bossy and I can get grumbly with the other dogs if they try to take my toys or my food. I don't always get along with other dominant male dogs, however I enjoy playing with female and submissive male dogs. I would certainly be okay if I was an only dog and then you could give all your attention to me! My foster mom also says I would do best in a home without cats because I really, really want to catch them and for some reason, she doesn’t think that’s a good idea! I don’t really understand but that’s okay…I’ll just play with my toys! I could also use some help learning how to walk better on a leash, but I am doing much better I'm told.....A no-pull leash is included in my adoption that really keeps me from pulling so much. When you leave, I will miss you, but I will be just fine in my crate. If we could go on walks, runs or car rides, I'd be one happy dog! So, that’s it about me….I’m really a nice dog. I just need a family that will have patience and take the time to teach me how to be a good dog! I know I can do it….will you give me a chance? I have been neutered, vaccinated, heart worm tested negative, and micro chipped! Nina is a very nice girl in need of a family to love her! Her mother was full bred Rottweiler and we think her dad was a Shar Pei mix. She is 55 pounds of pure love! She is intelligent and loves people of all ages! Nina can be very dominant with other dogs and doesn't do well with other femlaes so she would do best as a only dog or with a male dog that can hold their own when playing with her.....she plays rough ! She is housetrained and is very well behaved in the house. She does have a lot of energy so she needs a family who will exercise her and give her a lot of play time! She would make a all around GREAT family dog since she is used to being with her family. She is being displaced because her family is having to move to an apartment. She has a very beautiful, uniquely colored coat! Nina is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, heart worm tested negative and on preventatives, micro chipped. Wht: 11 pds. $175 adoption fee Jiffy gets very attached to one or two family members and will guard them from other members of the family and friends. Jiffy would be best with a couple or single person who understands Jiffy really needs to be crated when friends come to visit so he doesn't stress out and snap at them. This isn't mean to him and its actually less stress on him being away from the thing that distresses him. In his prior family he bit a couple of family members who came into his favorite family members space....he thought he was protecting them. He has been seen by a Animal Behaviorist and needs structure and not being pushed to do things that stress him out to that point. My name is Jiffy and I was rescued by Furry Kids' Refuge from a kill shelter when I was picked up as a stray and never claimed. I was so sick & scared at the shelter and it took Furry Kids' a few weeks to help me get well and not be so scared. I'm now so excited when people visit me and take me out to play. I want to be held & loved on and just snuggled with. I am completely a people dog.......means I'm happiest with people!! I do get along well with other dogs but could be adopted into a home with or without other animals......I would be happy either way. I walk well on a leash but am constantly trying to get up in your arms if you allow me too. I would be a great companion to most any family but probably not with families with young babies/toddlers because they tend to want to pick us little guys up and are not usually the most gentle with us small guys. I have the cutest face and most times my ears can't decide whether they want to stand up or flop over. I have been neutered, heart worm tested negative, vaccinated, micro chipped, and wormed. Sookie is shy when you first approach her but just say a few kind words to her, give her a treat, pet her gently and she will wag her tail to let you know she appreciates your kindness. Sookie has not had a very nice life up until she came to Furry Kids' Refuge but she is adjusting well and learning that people can be kind & gentle & trust-worthy. Due to her shyness, Sookie would do best in a home with no children under 12 years old. Sookie can jump a 4ft fence so she will need a home with a good tall fence to keep her safe. Sookie has been spayed, heart worm tested negative, vaccinated, micro chipped. Please fill out a application at www.furrykidsrefuge.org, click on 'Adopt a Dog' and a dedicated volunteer will be in touch. Thank you for your interest in Sookie. Furry Kids' Refuge is in need of good quality dog and puppy food with meat as the first ingredient. You can drop off donations at our weekly adoption events at the Lee's Summit Petco (1860 NW Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, MO), Saturdays only from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. Would you like to foster a Furry Kid? Furry Kids' Refuge will supply the food & vet care while you supply the basic house rules & love.......win-win for all!! Just visit our website http://www.furrykidsrefuge.org/category/fostering/ for more information. Thanks for your support!
