Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Chisel was returned because his family was moving and wasn't able to take him. His life was just turned upside down and all he wants is love and attention. He is a great dog, but is very misunderstood. He is high energy so he needs lots of exercise. He loves to play in the yard and run around. We suggest he be the only dog in the home, with owners who are able to be loving and patient as well as strong and capable of training him. We believe he may be fearful of tall men. He would be a great running partner!!!

More About Labrador Retriever Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever (short coat). Bella was rescued from a high kill shelter. Bella was known as a "frequent flyer" because the staff at the previous shelter had brought her in as a stray 4 times since 2013. Each time she was in poor condition. Luckily, we were able to pull her out of the high-kill shelter and bring her to our rescue. Bella is a darling dog and deserves a loving family and a fresh start in life. She is crate-trained, enjoys going for walks, and is very playful. When you say her name, she gets so excited. She recently had to have part of her tail amputated, because she had what is called "happy tail." We encourage doing our "Dog 4 A Day" program with Bella to give you an opportunity to get to know the sweet girl that she truly is and please don't forget to fill out an application online. * We do not advise for Bella to be around other dogs. She thrives around people and is very sweet.

      Breed: Mutt

      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Bender! He was found tied up in someone's yard. The nice people who found him arranged with his owner to take him and give him a good, loving home. He appears to be good with other dogs and is very sweet. He enjoys being outside and being around people. We feel that his ideal home would be with an active, loving family who can help this wonderful young dog get a second chance at life. Bender would do best in a home with another dog . He is shy when first meeting people, but he feels a lot more comfortable with other dogs. He loves to sleep and play with Bryn every day. Bryn can be seen on our website too. They are best friends and would love to be adopted together, if possible. But, they do not need to be. They play together, sleep together, and follow you everywhere. Staff update 2/26/17 : Bender had been missing for the past week and was found today by Riley the Beagle and Leslie as she was walking. Mr. Ron fed starving Bender and called us. Bender is a lucky dog, as so many have not found their way back home . Foster update 2/7/17: Bender was fabulous with our Downs Syndrome child and could not have been more loving or gentle with all of us. He does have separation anxiety and would do best with a family who is home most of the day and having another dog in the home to play with would make Bender very happy~! As we work a full day, Bender was left either in his crate or free-roaming in the home. When alone, he did damage to the curtains and his crate. Bender is a great dog for family as he loves kids and other dogs. He enjoys running in the yard and being with his people. If we were home more often, we would have adopted him in a minute! It was hard to have to return him as he is such a wonderful dog. DOG FOR A DAY UPDATE: Bender is such a sweetheart!! He was really well-behaved and mellow all day. He walked really well on a leash and didn't pull. He stayed close to me or went a little ahead to explore most of the time. He was interested in the other dogs at the park and was friendly with all of them. He liked being around children and let them pet him. We went to get food and he was happy to lay down and hang out on the patio with us while we ate. Every time we were in the car he just quietly curled up in the back seat and fell asleep or looked out the window. Overall, he's a very sweet, mellow dog. If I could have a dog where I lived I would adopt him in a heartbeat! He just needs a loving home!

Posted Breed: Hound / American Bulldog (short coat). She was living in the woods with her two babies, Natasha and Boris. Darling was a fantastic mom who made sure her babies were taken care of. Please view the photo of her and her little girl Natasha below. She is very shy and sweet. We are trying to introduce her to new people so that she becomes more relaxed when meeting people she doesn't know. She is living with Judy now and is totally housetrained and loving and is good with other dogs and enjoys playing with them She is anxiously awaiting her time to have a home and relax, but most of all she wants to be loved. Darling is heartworm positive and we are starting the slow kill method on her. At the time of her adoption, the adopter will be provided with six months of heartworm medication and information explaining the slow kill method treatment.

Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog (short coat). Foster Home Update: Rose is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever fostered. She absolutely loves everyone she meets and is a great companion. She is extremely versatile meaning she will lay inside with you all day or go outside on adventures and be perfectly happy doing either. She is crate trained, house trained and knows all basic commands. She is not destructive in any way. She is getting better on walks, and is learning not to pull as much. ROSE NEEDS TO BE THE ONLY PET IN THE HOME. She DOES NOT like cats. She is AMAZING WITH CHILDREN OVER THE AGE OF 12, she loves them all. She loves being outside and off leash with a big fenced in area to explore. She comes when called and overall is an easy dog to take care of. She will jump right up in your car when you open the door, but during the car ride she gets a little anxious and starts panting. If you open the windows, it helps her relax a little bit. I also brought her around horses and she doesn't care for them. Please foster or adopt this sweet girl and give her the forever home she deserves! -------------------------------------------------- Hi, my name is Rose, I am a beautiful catahoula. I was surrendered from a high kill shelter where Judy and the amazing staff rescued me from. I have high hopes of getting a second chance at life with a wonderful family and I know Judy and the wonderful staff will help me do that. I am a loving dog but need to be the only dog. I'm not fond of cats either, and for that I am sorry. But I will love all over you. I do best with children over the age of 12. I am a big girl and I am strong so I need an experienced dog parent who is strong. I would prefer a large yard with a high privacy fence where I can explore and roll around and bask in the sun. I am smart and learn quickly.

Posted Breed: Papillon (medium coat). Cookie is a senior puppy who was rescued from a high kill shelter. Per the vet tech, Cookie has a 6 out of a 6 heart murmur, but there is NO evidence that she is in congestive heart failure. She does have dental disease, but anesthesia at her age would be risky. T/D small bites food is a wonderful suggestion for Cookie (and any dog needing a little help with dental disease). This food can be bought at your local vet office. T/D can be used as food or 2-3 bites day as treats and dogs love it~ and it helps keep their teeth and breath fresh and clean! The vet thinks her prognosis at this point is fair, but at anytime (due to her age and murmur) she could develop heart failure, and she will need to be watched closely. Cookie would love a home that is very slow paced, without children. I promise you will fall in love with Cookie and she is waiting for her furever family to come take her home. Won't you be that special person who offers her the love and care she deserves? February 2017 foster update: Cookie looks almost like a mini Collie. Her hair has all grown back and her coat is full and beautiful! She is a good eater and is fairly easy to care for. She does sleep a lot and her favorite place is in her doggy bed on the floor next to my husband's side of the bed. She knows when he puts on his work clothes and pretty much keeps to herself in her bed while he is at work, other than to eat. He is definitely her favorite person! When he is home, she is his shadow and cries at the door if he goes outside without her UNLESS he has left with his work clothes on. Shows how smart she is! She loves to lay on a shelf, as shown in the picture. It is only about 6 inches off the floor but she can survey the room from there as well as the front door, for any comings and goings. She is not really interactive with the other dogs in the household (from 4 pounds up to 60 pounds) but will put them in their place if they do something that she determines to be wrong, especially our biggest guy. The 2 small puppies already know not to bother her or she will correct them. She has a little stuffed toy (her baby) that she keeps in her bed with her. The puppies steal it on occasion but not if she is anywhere near it! We have put a calming collar on her and sometimes I think it does make a difference (regarding her barking). She does great in the car and enjoys going on rides but can get vocal if she sees other dogs. Foster Update: Cookie is doing well and her fur is starting to grow back. It basically looked like a lion cut as her rear half was mostly hairless. We have given her some medicated baths and her itching seems to be mostly resolved though she does get a bit flaky on those areas. She eats dry food just fine and though she does have some periods of coughing, we have not noticed any breathing issues. She can be quite yappy so I would not recommend her for an apartment or townhouse.

      Zeus the one...

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). 08/12/2016: Zeus was returned back to Pet Rescue by Judy. His poor owner cried so much returning him. His neighbors in his building told him it was cruel to keep him alive and he should be forced to put Zeus down. So to avoid having Zeus put down he gave him back to us. Let me tell you a little about Zeus. He is housetrained, loves to sit in your lap and cuddle with you to stay warm. Won't you please open your heart and home to help Zeus have a home again. February foster update: Zeus had some bloodwork done in January due to some issues he was having and is now on a special prescription diet. He is not able to have any other food or treats but is doing well with his new food. He is still adjusting to his loss of vision and appears to have none left in his remaining eye though I do believe he may see some shadow/light depending on the surroundings. I use the word "touch" when I am going to touch him and "lift" when I am going to pick him up. That helps somewhat with his startling but he tends to get "lost" in the yard as he loses his bearings frequently. He does like a good neck scratching after his eye drops. He does tend to get up pre-dawn and bark to let you know he needs to go out and that he is hungry. I have been feeding him a small amount and then he will go back to bed for a couple of hours. December foster update : Unfortunately Zeus' left eye worsened significantly and had to be removed a couple of weeks ago. His stitches are out and he is healing well and out of pain thankfully. It is now obvious that he sees very little out of his right eye and so he is having to do quite a bit of adjusting to his new world. He still gets 2 different eye drops in his remaining eye and goes to the doggy eye specialist and this will continue for the rest of his life. For his safety, he will need a home without an inground pool or stairs and one that has a fence. September foster update: Zeus was examined by an eye specialist and diagnosed with Endothelial Dystrophy in both eyes and possible Glaucoma in his left eye. He is on multiple eye drops at this time, some 4x daily, and will continue on at least some of them for the rest of his life. He does well getting around the house and his ear and skin infections are cleared up He does need medicated baths at least once or twice weekly. He spends much of the time sleeping and he eats mainly dry food. He loves to be petted and will nudge you for more when you stop. Zeus loves to lay in the sun and will go outside and just throw himself down on the driveway in the sun. We have to make him come in so he doesn't get overheated! We have multiple dog crates and beds around the house and he seems to like them all! He is cautious while getting around but finds his way where he wants to go! Poor Zeus was left outside our building. Judy got to work at 5:30 a.m. and there he was left in a carrier crate. He had nails that were so overgrown he couldn't even walk and cataracts in both eyes. Judy sent him to the vet to get checked out. He is not old our vet said about 5. He will melt your heart. He is so sweet and quiet and loves to get taken outside for a walk. If you want a lap dog this is the one. He is ready for adoption...Honestly he is such a great dog that I am shocked that he has not been adopted! Due to his limited eyesight, Zeus would do best in a home without an inground pool or flights of stairs. Also, since he startles easily, he would do best with only older, very considerate children.

Posted Breed: Terrier (short coat). London and his sister, Camden (Hazy) were adopted together as puppies. Their owner is moving out of the country and has to unfortunately return them to us. London and his sister are great dogs! They love other dogs and going to the dog park. They are housetrained and love to cuddle. Since London and Camden have been together since they were born, we would love to find a home where they can stay together. Bluebell and her 8 babies were rescued from a high kill shelter right before their time was up. They were initially brought to animal control after being taken from a hoarder. Foster Update: Asher is a cute grey and white boy with striking blue eyes. He is the clown of the litter and loves to jump and play. He has a teddy bear personality and loves to sit and listen while you talk to him. Kisses and tail wagging are a plenty with this little man! Asher is very patient and always waits his turn when its time to go out or eat. He gets along well with dogs of all sizes and is particularly careful and sweet around my 17 year old chihuahua. He is doing fantastic with going outside to potty and will be easy to finish housebreaking. Love and toys are paramount for this little guy! Asher was a pleasure to foster and will be missed greatly! The Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. The American Pit Bull Terrier has a strong pleasure to please. The APBT has evoked more human emotional, rational, and irrational response than any other breed that exists today. By no means are these dogs people-haters or people-eaters. Their natural aggressive tendencies are toward other dogs and animals, not people. However if they are properly socialized with a firm, but calm, confident, consistent pack leader, they will not even be aggressive with them. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. Highly protective of his owners and the owner's property, it will fight an enemy to the death. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. The American Pit Bull Terrier can be willful with meek owners and needs a firm hand. They are generally okay with other pets if they are raised with them from puppy hood. They are very friendly, but not recommended for most people, because most people do not understand how to properly raise and treat a dog. Problems arise when one does not understands dog psychology, seeing the dog as having human emotions, and ends up with a dog who thinks he is the boss of the house. For a smaller, not as powerful dog, people can sometimes get away with this, however, for a powerful breed, one really needs to understand and follow this concept of keeping a dog. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child play. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. Are strong and generally weigh between 40 and 70 lbs. They have a life expectancy of about 12 - 14 years
