If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Age: Young
      Location: Horn Lake, MS
Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). This cutie pie is full of energy and affection. Ralph is a happy little boy who's joy will rub off on you to brighten any low spot in your day. Thought to be born around Christmas 2014, Ralph is a puppy who hides his inexperience well. He learns quickly from his older fur-siblings. Ralph was found wandering the neighborhoods scrounging for food, emaciated and sore ridden. DARS took him into the safety of foster care, nursed him back to health and fattened him up. His adult size is litter smaller than it would've been without his ordeal, but he's a great travel size at only about 34lbs. He's long forgiven and forgotten the humans who dumped him and lavishes his love on his foster parents. Ralph is fully vaccinated, neutered and on heartworm preventative. Location: Horn Lake, MS
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Basenji / Mixed (short coat). My, what big ears you have, my dear! Sweet Tux will steal your heart with his tenderness. Being a little timid, he needs a quiet home and a little extra patience. But once you earn his trust, he's pretty willing to take your lead as long as he's got you in his sights. He did very well at his first adoption event. Tux is a curious mixed breed who resembles a basenji or possibly a dingo. In this part of the country, he's bound to have some lab in him also. We think Tux is about 5 yo. He's housebroken & crate trained. He gets along with other dogs, but hasn't been tested with cats. Tux is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. If you'd like more information about Tux, call 662-342-9448 or email: info@desotoanimalrescue.org

      Trip

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Horn Lake, MS
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Trip was playing possum on the side of the road and it worked, because a local animal rescuer stopped to check on him. He wasn’t injured, but was very eager to have human companionship and jumped right in her car to take a ride to the shelter where a DARS foster retrieved him and took him into foster care. Trip knows simple commands - sit, down, kennel, and shake. He is very intuitive and is the most compassionate dog his foster parents have ever seen. When another dog in the home isn’t feeling well or leaves the house for a trip to the vet, Trip is concerned and usually lays by the crate until his friend starts to feel better or returns home from the vet visit. He loves his humans just as much and tries to console them when they’ve had a rough day or if they are just tired. Trip is one of the sweetest, most loving dogs we’ve ever seen. He is also a great playmate. Trip will play well with a 155 pound English Mastiff and Rat Terrier that only weigh 15 -20 pounds, always careful not to step on anyone…….he’s very agile. Trip has been in our foster care for about 2 years. Trip has been neutered, he's on heartworm preventative, is housetrained, up to date with shots, good with kids, and good with all size dogs. He isn’t good with cats, birds flying over the backyard, or squirrels. If you'd like more information, please call 662-342-9448, email info@desotoanimalrescue.org or submit a pre-adoption application here: http://desotoanimalrescue.org/dog-adoption-application.html and someone will contact you as soon as possible. Our adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $125.

      Pepper

      rescue
      Breed: Beagle-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Horn Lake, MS
Posted Breed: Hound / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). A girl who just likes to have fun! Pepper is lucky to have been born in her warm, dry foster home and not in the cold woods where her sick, emaciated mom could hardly feed herself, much less 9 puppies! That's the wonder of fostering needy animals. You make a huge difference in the lives of very grateful babies. Pepper, like her siblings and mom is shy and timid in new situations and with strangers, but she has progressed in leaps and bounds with patience and a few trade secrets. She also does better when separated from her pack. Pepper's personality has always been a little unique though. She's the quiet child who sits to the side watching while all the other kids romp and get into mischief. She's the kid sitting by herself reading a book or writing in her journal. Pepper was born in Nov 2014 and one of the few still waiting for her forever home. She would do best in a quieter home with no or older children due to her shyness. She is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, heart worm negative and on preventative. She's also crate trained and housebroken. If you'd like to learn more about this sweet girl, call 662-342-9448 or submit an application here: http://desotoanimalrescue.org/dog-adoption-application.html

      Jeri

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Rat Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Horn Lake, MS
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Jeri and his sister, Meri were found scrounging for themselves on rural and unoccupied land. They were both timid and scared so it took a while to coax them out from their hiding space. But, once Jeri decided to trust, his little sister followed his lead, as she always does. Jeri is always the first of the two to try new things or to greet new people. Once you've earned his trust, he's a very loving and playful boy who adores attention from his human. He will probably always be wary of strangers. Jeri plays well with other dogs once he's had a chance to get to know them. We don't think either would be good with little children because of their timidness and their Terrier tendencies. Rat Terriers have a lot of energy and many are good at agility & obedience training which also serves as excellent exercise. Jeri is neutered, vaccinated and on HW preventative. You can speak to his foster parents to learn more by calling 662-342-9448 or emailing: info@desotoanimalrescue.org

      Breed: Rat Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Horn Lake, MS
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Meri and her brother Jeri were found lost and alone on abandoned rural property. It took awhile to coax them out into the open and even more patience to get them close enough to touch. As she always does, Meri follows Jeri's lead in all things. We would love for them to be adopted together, but if not, Meri will need an older, gentle dog to show her the way. Once she trusts you, Meri is a loving, sweet girl who likes to be near her human. She loves treats and plays well with other dogs once she gets used to them. We don't think Meri would do well with small children due to her timidness and her Terrier nippiness. She really hasn't been around cats, but a lot of terriers like to chase kitty cats and use them as squeaky toys. Meri is spayed and has had all of her vaccinations. She is HW negative and on preventative. For more info, please call 662-342-9448 or email: info@desotoanimalrescue.org
