If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Madison, AL
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). "MAX" German Shepard mix? found dragging a big heavy chain. He was very hard to get a picture of because he kept coming up to me for love. He is a VERY sweet and friendly dog. He was very excitable when he first came to us but now he is very calm and about as gentle as a big dog can be. He does have a slight limp but it doesn't seem to be anything serious. Probably from carrying around the chain. He has a bit of grey around his mouth. He is black with tan feet. He is NOT neutered. Foster has a little Jack Russell that is too nervous of Max for him to stay. If you are interested in adopting please send an email to adopt@tlcpaws.org.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Madison, AL
Posted Breed: Hound (short coat). Harold is a very friendly dog that was found a few weeks ago. He doesn't appear to be a stray but more likely someone just left him. He is great with people and comes when you call. He loves running around and playing and craves attention and being pet. He was examined by Chase Vet and was estimated to be between 1 and 2 years old. He was given his rabies shot and treated for fleas. He seems to be very healthy. A heart worm exam was not conducted. He is currently occupying a kennel out in the country and does very well. He is let out everyday for play and exercise and does great. He returns to the kennel on his own and seems happy to be a part of our home. We know he will make someone a great pet and companion. Posted Breed: Beagle / Mixed (short coat). This beautiful boy named Adam is the last sibling out of 16 puppies that were rescued along with his mom. You know what they say? We save the best for last, so if you are wanting to adopt a sweetheart of a puppy Adam is your boy! Adam is super affectionate, playful, loving and easy going after play time. When my daughter goes outside, she is right there to play with her. She has really pretty red spots, almost like a Catahoula on her back and white markings on her face. She weighs around fifty pounds and we think she is around a year old.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Madison, AL
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). "ANGEL" is about a year old, weighs 40lbs. We have been trying to catch this little girl for weeks. She is very smart and such a fighter. One of our great fosters, Judy Stevens had been going out each day and night and feeding and trying to show her that it is all ok. One of her neighbors, Evelyn has been working with Angel too. Finally, she went inside the fence and just sat there. She could not do any more. When you look at her picture, PLEASE look at her eyes. She knew finally that she could do no more. We have her now and thank goodness. We have taken her to Chase so they can watch and make sure she and the pups are going to be ok. She has had her puppies and they have all found homes. Now she needs her own home or foster so she doesn't have to be boarded. If this picture of her touches your heart, please let us know. Thanks everyone! Angel needs to be an only dog. If you are interested in fostering or adopting please send an email to adopt@tlcpaws.org.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. "Ms. Puppy" is approximately 55 lbs and is almost 2yrs old. She is spayed and all her shots are up to date. She is well behaved, (a little stubborn independent mannered) but is very smart and trained and as well as house & kennel trained. She is very very sweet and loving and very LOYAL. She plays with other dogs very well and loves to run! Her family had to leave a big yard to move into an apartment and being kept inside so much is stressing her. She needs a home where she can get the attention love and exercise she needs. If you are interested in adopting please send an email to adopt@tlcpaws.org.
