Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). See Ozarks's HomepageGo to our official websiteOzarks is a wonderful, friendly male dog. We believe he is a Labrador Retriever mix adult dog. He was found wandering in Oakland, Arkansas, a couple of miles from our shelter. Found dog posters where distributed/posted, but no owner has come forward. Ozarks has been to the vet, is neutered and heartworm negative. He loves to smile at people, and is just a great, laidback kind of dog that will be your best friend. He would make a great family dog. Ozarks resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas. Please contact Gail Ross at 870-431-8229, or via email at gailspets@hotmail.com to discuss this dog. You can find our adoption application by going to www.Gailspets.org and clicking on the Adoption Application tab. The application, when completed and submitted, will be electronically sent to Gail’s email address. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

My name is Lucille, isn't that a pretty name. I am estimated to have been born the end of March 2016. The vet thinks I am a Labrador Retriever mix. I'll go along with there. Perhaps I might have a little Heeler in me because of the black/white muddling on my legs. I am very friendly. I LOVE attention from the volunteers, including tummy rubs. I am currently learning how to properly walk on a leash and that is going well. I do know sit on command. I am looking for a family to call my own and I really hope that is with you. Hi, my name is Earl (named for the man who found me) and I am a 16 month old (as of mid July 2016) male Catahoula Leopard Mix dog. You can see in my pictures that I have the typical spotted fur of a Catahoula. I arrived at the shelter after having been found abandoned. I am getting to know everybody here and have made friends with both the volunteers (who love me) and the other dogs. I'm currently in a pen with a male Labrador mix and we are having a ball running and playing with each other. I have met several dogs, though, that I don't get along with, so everyone here feels it would be best to be the only dog in the home. Please don't shy away from adopting me though. When I go on walks I get along with everyone, it's just some times being stuck in a pen with another dog isn't good. I LOVE LOVE LOVE tummy rubs. Just look at me and I'll flop down so that you can rub my tummy! I am looking for a furrever family that wants a big dog and would preferably have a fenced in yard that I could run in. Would that be with you? Earl resides at a rescue organization in Arkansas. Please contact Gail Ross at 870-431-8229, or via email at gailspets@hotmail.com to discuss this dog.
