Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Elissa Kurtz (elissak@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. PURVIS NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! If you are viewing Purvis' bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Purvis Breed: Lab Mix Approximate Age: 3 years old Approximate Weight: 60 lbs Currently Living at: Foster. Purvis needs a forever home! Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Needs a second dog, High Energy, Has some stranger danger issues especially around men- will need an adopter who is willing to work with him on this Purvis is a sweet 60 pound, crate trained, goofy Lab Mix who is 3 years old. He is very playful, active and has a curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Playing with other dogs is his favorite thing to do. Whether it's out in public, a dog park or a doggy daycare he loves all dogs. Sometimes he needs a slow introduction to puppies because he is practically still a puppy himself but doesn't understand that his size and demeanor can be scary to the little ones! Most of the time after an introduction, he plays great with them (puppies). He enjoys walks, jogs, hikes, swimming, chasing soccer balls and playing in the snow! After a nice walk or playing, Purvis loves to lay on the floor or walks into his crate and chew on a bone while you relax. Sometimes he has a mind of his own when he sees a squirrel or another furry friend. Purvis knows most of the basic commands and some tricks too: - Sit - Stay - Come - Leave It - Let Go - Down - Heel - Break(Free) - Off - Away - Get Busy(Bathroom) - Crate(Bed) - Shake - Roll Over Purvis will need a committed owner to provide more training and exercise because he is a very smart and energetic dog. He will need a patient and experienced dog owner to remind him who the leader is in the family. He is intelligent, so he will learn to follow your rules quickly but he needs someone with a firm grasp of pack leadership in order to respond positively to training. Unfortunately, Purvis was not properly socialized as a puppy and is a bit shy and scared in new settings and around new people. He loves everyone but is a big scaredy cat in certain situations and would do really well living in a home that already has another dog to help Purvis learn the ropes of how to be a confident pup. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Spaniel / American Foxhound / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Sheila McGee (sheilamcgee2001@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. Easy-going and handsome young man looking for a forever home! CLARK NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Clark Breed: Spaniel/hound mix Approximate Age: 2 years old SEX: male Approximate Weight: 55-60 pounds Has Lived With: other dogs, cats Currently Living at: DC area foster home -- Clark needs a forever home ASAP! Special Considerations: Clark would do best in a home with a second dog to help show him the ropes and build confidence! Hi! I'm Clark! I'm a 2-year-old, 51-pound hound/spaniel mix, and i was hoping Santa would bring me a home of my own for Christmas. That didn't happen, but I'm still waiting and hoping that someone will come along for me very soon! I've got a reputation, Humans... a reputation for being such a good, good boy! The nice people at the shelter down South said that I am an easygoing guy who loves to run play with my four-legged friends. And though they can't be sure, they even think I might be good with kids because I'm so nice! Do you have kids? I sure would love to meet them and give them lots of kisses!! Oh, man... it makes my tail wag just thinking about it!! I can't wait to go on hikes with you, or trips to the dog park... just thinking about all those good sniffs to smell makes my nose start twitching. On the other hand, I'm also looking forward to lounging around on your couch, or on a comfy bed of my very own... or maybe even YOUR bed (when you're not looking -- hee, hee!). That sounds like bliss to me! I met the cats in my foster home and didn't mind them...they rubbed up against my legs and I just sniffed at them. They were pretty nice. I also met some kids, and some of them were loud and scary, but others were nice and gentle and I really liked them. Since I am a pretty shy guy, I need to go to a home where there is already a resident dog(s) to help "show me the ropes" and make me feel more comfortable and confident! Also, it's very important that you sign me up for some obedience classes, because even though I'm a sweetie with a lot of love to give, I need to practice my manners so I can show you what an even better boy I can be. So, how 'bout it? Are you ready to have a handsome young man like me join your family? How 'bout you fill out and submit an application for me today! Like most shelter dogs, Clark may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Age: Adult
      Location: Washington, DC
Posted Breed: Boxer / Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Megan Davis (megan.luckydog@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. LUCY LOO NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs and cats and a rabbit! Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: experienced dog owner who is comfortable working with a trainer to help Lucy be more confident and comfortable. My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). My puppies have all been adopted and I am excited to be in DC to find my furever home. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I am a volunteer favorite at Lucky Dog! My fosters love me because I ride nicely in the car and am great at home. I am happy staying in and watching Netflix and ordering in but also love to go on hikes and like to show a fitbit who is boss. I also enjoy roller derby and crocheting. My ultimate goal is to become a spokespup for Barkbox Super Chewer. I follow Lexy the Elderbull on Instagram and she is a real role model for me—she knows how to wear a tutu and pearls and make it look so effortless. I have lived with cats and a bunny and do well with other dogs off leash. I get nervous when I meet other dogs on leash so I need my new family to help me work on that. Because they loved having me and recognize what an amazing girl I am, my fosters have sponsored me and whoever adopts me will receive a training package (included in the adoption fee) to help me with my transition and to get settled into my forever home. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy, wrestling with other big dogs and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She has already been on a hike at Great Falls and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does well with other dogs off leash. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Sweet pup available for adoption! BEAU NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Beau Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever/Hound Mix Approximate Age: 1-2 years SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 60-65 lbs Has Lived With: cats Currently Living at: Foster home, looking for a permanent home. *Foster Update* Beau is a pretty quiet guy and VERY loving! He gets so happy to see his foster mom come home and just wants to get rubbed on! He doesn't jump at all. He probably needs to gain a few pounds, poor fella :(. He is good in the crate. Overall, he is very chill guy. I don't think he knows what toys are, yet, so we're working on that also. Beau is still learning and getting acquainted to his environment. He's not used to a leash and doesn't understand it quite yet, so we are taking him on frequent walks. He gets very excited while seeing other dogs while walking, so we're working on his socialization with other dogs. His forever home will need to be prepared to work on Beau's socialization skills, so he can make as many paw-friends, as possible! Hi, I'm Beau! I am a good boy, who is looking for his forever home. Could it be yours? I am a goo-sized guy, who would make for a great cuddle companion. I would be perfect for any size space, since I am about done growing! Beau would love a family that can give him the love he deserves, in return for daily kisses, tail wags and cuddles. Of course, he is also looking for lots of exercise! He can't wait to show how smart he is at doggie school too! Squeaky toys and treats would also be a must! Won't you consider giving Beau the forever home he needs and deserves? He can't wait to be part of your family. Like most shelter dogs, Beau may need a refresher on house training. He is likely crate trained. Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living at: Foster home. Hoss is a sweet 1 year old Retriver mix. He weighs about 45 lbs and, because of his age, may fill out a little but is otherwise done growing. We don't know how this sweet boy ended up in a shelter but it hasn't dampened his spirits one bit and he can't wait to meet his forever family! Hoss will need plenty of exercise and playtime each day to be a happy and healthy pup. He would love to go on daily long walks, hikes and regular trips to the dog park. After he's tuckered out, Hoss loves cuddling up for a nice nap and belly rub. He can't wait to go to obedience training with his new family so that he can bond with his people and become his very best self! Hoss is good with other dogs so he'd be a great addition to an existing pack or happy to soak up all the attention as an only dog. The nice folks at Lucky Dog don't know how Hoss is with young children or cats but if you're interested, let us know and we can try to find out! Like most shelter dogs, Hoss may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Hoss has tested positive and been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Cutie must go to a home with an already existing dog. He can not go to a home with young children or cats. Hi there! My name is Cutie and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up in a scary place called a ‘shelter’ in Puerto Rico. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and flew me to the DC area-- they tell me that someone here will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft yellow coat with a white patch on my chest! I've also got floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 2.5 years old and 40 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. I do really well with other dogs as they help me to be confident and brave- because of this, I will need to go to a home with an already existing dog. I will do best in a home without cats or young children. I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, CUTIE Like most shelter dogs, Cutie may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. It's dark and cold, and really loud in here. I keep waiting for a nice person to come get me, but each time I see someone, they walk right by and I'm still by myself. :( Luckily, the shelter staff say I am one of their favorites, but they hope that someone will step up and adopt me very SOON so I can get out of here and to safety in a loving home! Don't you think I would look really cute as your new Facebook cover photo, romping around in the sunshine and rolling in the grass or snow!? And how I'd love to snuggle up by you after a long hike. I just really want to run, play, then snuggle, nap and dream of all the adventures we'll have together. I would just LOVE trips to the dog park and hikes in the woods -- I love to discover new things! Raven is an awesome dog and makes friends with everyone she meets! At around 2 years old, she will need lots and lots of exercise to stay happy and healthy. Raven's new person or family will need to make sure she gets lots of socialization and playtime with other dogs and people to keep up the good social skills she has already! And like all dogs we adopt out, she'll need to go to obedience classes to build a strong bond with her people, and help her become a well behaved companion or family member. Raven seems to like all the people she meets, and can't wait to wiggle her way into your heart and home. Like most young dogs, Raven may need a refresher on her house training when she gets to a new home. She will also need to go to obedience school so she can continue to be a well-socialized dog! The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and e-mail it to at Sheila at sheilam@luckydoganimalrescue.org ASAP! Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Sam Nelson (samn@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. BLUE EYED BEAUTY NEEDS FOREVER HOME! SASHA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Sasha Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix Approximate Age: 2 years Sex: Female Approximate Weight: 33lbs Currently Living at: DC foster Special Adoption Considerations: Sasha prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats, and would do best with children over 15 years old. I was saying to myself just this morning, "Sasha," I said, "Sasha, you know what you need? You need a person all your own." So I sat down to write this post for the nice people at Lucky Dog, because apparently that's the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable, doggies who are...I shudder to type this...HOMELESS. That's right: I have no home to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours? This little charmer knows she's got it and is not afraid to flaunt it. Sasha seeks a mature and experienced new owner who can meet her every need and spoil her beyond her wildest dreams. Sound like you? This 2 year old spunky, good time girl is intelligent, focused, and learns new tricks quickly. She’s quite the smarty pants and loves to show off her new skills like sit, down, and release for an audience of friends! Being an Aussie mix, Sasha will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to be a happy and healthy pup. She can't wait to go to obedience training with her new family so that she can bond with her people and become her very best self! Though we don't know why she ended up in the shelter, we know she doesn't belong there! This sweetheart loves the company of her humans but prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats. She loves playing with toys (especially tennis balls!) and eating yummy treats, but at the end of the day, Sasha loves nothing more than cuddling with the people that love her. Want to make Sasha a part of your family? Fill out an application! Sasha's foster mom says, "She likes to cuddle, be scratched behind her ears and on her belly, give kisses and take naps. Sasha also is playful and loves to chase balls, a frisbee, and her own tail. She is super loyal once she bonds with her people. She is a good house guest who respects her boundaries (she doesn't jump on furniture unless invited or chew anything other than her toys). Sasha also does very well in her crate." Here is a cute video of Sasha being a goofball: https://youtu.be/-3kDvL2ZDVI The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Sweet boy looking for a second chance with YOU! SECOND CHANCE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Second Chance Breed: Boxer Mix Approximate Age: 3 years SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 55 lbs Has Lived With: Other Dogs Currently Living at: A cold and scary shelter in South Carolina. Second Chance is looking for a foster home, or even better yet, a FUR-ever home! Special adoption considerations: Second Chance is Heartworm Positive but has already been treated and is happily recovering. Hi there! My name is Second Chance and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. The folks at the shelter gave me my name because when they found me, I was in really rough shape. I was super skinny and pretty neglected, but thats all finally behind me. The amazing folks at Lucky Dog tell me that I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my (second) chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft all white coat with a black nose! I've also got big pointy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 3 years old and 55 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs. They are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! Woofs and tail wags, Second Chance Like most shelter dogs, Second Chance may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Second Chance has tested positive and has been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
