If you are viewing Purvis' bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Purvis Best Guess for Breed: Lab Mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of 4/17/17 Approximate Weight: 60 lbs Currently Living at: In DC Area Foster Home Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Needs to live with a second dog, High Energy, Has some stranger danger issues especially around men- will need an adopter who is willing to work with him on this. Purvis can only be adopted to an experienced dog owner. Purvis is a sweet 60 pound, crate trained, goofy Lab Mix who is 3 years old. He is very playful, active and has a curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Playing with other dogs is his favorite thing to do. Whether it's out in public, a dog park or a doggy daycare he loves all dogs. Sometimes he needs a slow introduction to puppies because he is practically still a puppy himself but doesn't understand that his size and demeanor can be scary to the little ones! Most of the time after an introduction, he plays great with them (puppies). He enjoys walks, jogs, hikes, swimming, chasing soccer balls and playing in the snow! After a nice walk or playing, Purvis loves to lay on the floor or walks into his crate and chew on a bone while you relax. Sometimes he has a mind of his own when he sees a squirrel or another furry friend. Purvis knows most of the basic commands and some tricks too: - Sit - Stay - Come - Leave It - Let Go - Down - Heel - Break(Free) - Off - Away - Get Busy(Bathroom) - Crate(Bed) - Shake - Roll Over Purvis will need a committed owner to provide more training and exercise because he is a very smart and energetic dog. He will need a patient and experienced dog owner to remind him who the leader is in the family. He is intelligent, so he will learn to follow your rules quickly but he needs someone with a firm grasp of pack leadership in order to respond positively to training. Unfortunately, Purvis was not properly socialized as a puppy and is a bit shy and scared in new settings and around new people. He loves everyone but is a big scaredy cat in certain situations and would do really well living in a home that already has another dog to help Purvis learn the ropes of how to be a confident pup. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: Lucy Loo must go to an experienced dog owner who is comfortable working with a trainer to help her be more confident and comfortable. My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). My puppies have all been adopted and I am excited to be in DC to find my furever home. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I am a volunteer favorite at Lucky Dog! My fosters love me because I ride nicely in the car and am great at home. I am happy staying in and watching Netflix and ordering in but also love to go on hikes and like to show a fitbit who is boss. I also enjoy roller derby and crocheting. My ultimate goal is to become a spokespup for Barkbox Super Chewer. I follow Lexy the Elderbull on Instagram and she is a real role model for me—she knows how to wear a tutu and pearls and make it look so effortless. I get nervous when I meet other dogs on leash so I need my new family to help me work on that. Because they loved having me and recognize what an amazing girl I am, my fosters have sponsored me and whoever adopts me will receive a training package (included in the adoption fee) to help me with my transition and to get settled into my forever home. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy, wrestling with other big dogs and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She has already been on a hike at Great Falls and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does well with other dogs off leash. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Happy, handsome boy looking for love WENDELL NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Wendell Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 1 year, 7 months (as of 4/12/17) SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 78.4 pounds Has Lived With: Other dogs Currently Living at: Local DC boarding Special adoption considerations: Wendell needs a home without kids. Temporary Foster Update: "Wendell is medium energy with a couple walks a day being enough to keep him happy. Wendell does not shed much and does not like the cold, but he does have a husky/shepherd personality. Wendell loves treats and attention so he is very trainable, but Wendell will talk back and try to convince you to see it his way if you tell him no. Wendell is very well behaved in the house, and only chews on his toys. Wendell is great with dogs, and grownups once he gets to know you. If you are interested in a dog with a strong happy personality, Wendell would like to be your partner." Meet handsome Wendell! Wendell is about one and a half years old, he is a shepherd mix with a single short coat, weighing in at 78.4 lbs and he can't wait to meet you! Wendell, though out of the crazy puppy stages, will still need PLENTY of exercise and cannot wait to learn with you in DC! He's dreaming of long walks and trips to the dog park in his future and would love to play with new toys, explore the neighborhood and even go to obedience classes to show off just how smart he is! He already knows how to sit on command and takes treats very gently from your hand. He does need help with his manners. He's counting down the minutes until he can meet your friends, go on trips, and cuddle up with you on the couch after a long day. Wendell is GREAT with other dogs, so he'd be a good addition to an existing pack or happy to soak up all the attention as an only dog. He will need to go to a home without kids. He hasn't yet met cats - let us know if you have any and we can test him out! Like most shelter dogs, Wendell may need a refresher on house training. He is likely crate trained. Adorable terrier mix looking for her furever family!! Jackie NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Jackie Best Guess for Breed: Jack Russell Mix Best Guess for Age: 6-7 yrs old as of 07/14/17 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 14 lbs Has Lived With: Dogs, Cats Currently Living at: DC Foster. Needs a FOREVER HOME!! Special Adoption Considerations: Jackie is just like her namesake, Jackie O, regal and refined, and won’t be friends with just anyone, so a home with a young dog looking for a playmate or young children may not be the best fit. She does well with cats, and with dogs who like to sit back and enjoy the finer things in life, like naps. Jackie also has some bladder issues, which is managed well with daily medication. This sweet lady is a 6-7 year old Jack Russell mix, weighing about 14 lbs. One of our great Lucky Dog volunteers found and rescued Jackie right before the 4th of July! While she currently lives in a DC foster home with three rambunctious dogs and a cat, Jackie likes to do her own thing. When she’s not following her favorite humans around, she prefers to be happily snuggled up on the dog bed, or across someone’s lap. Since she is past her puppy years, she won't have all that crazy puppy energy! Jackie loves to go for walks and sniff at all the exciting smells, and then come back and nap in the sun. Jackie is a great balance of inquisitive terrier and couch potato. Make this adorable lady a part of your family!! Like most shelter dogs, Jackie may need a refresher on housetraining. Cindy MUST go to a home with a resident dog and would do best with kids over 12. For additional video of Cindy, visit https://youtu.be/FR5LliCL9E4. Meet Cindy! This sweet little girl is looking for her forever home - is it yours? Cindy is coming to DC from Texas following the storm and would love to find a place to call her very own. Cindy is pretty shy but she comes out of her shell! Cindy would love to have some training to give her confidence. She likes other dogs and MUST go to a home with another dog. She LOVES to play in the backyard with her foster brother and sister and is even good with her feline foster sister too! Cindy is a bit timid with kids and can get scared so she can not go to a home with kids under the age of 12. At events, Cindy is really shy but once she's home, she gets brave and is a total cuddle bug. She gets really nervous outside of the house and isn't quite ready to walk on a leash... even with her foster siblings. So, she really needs backyard play! She is great in her crate and goes in right away. Like most shelter dogs, Cindy may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Cindy tested positive and has been treated for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Name: Happy Best guess as to breed: Terrier mix Best guess as to age: 1 year SEX: Male Approximately Weight: 53 lbs Has Lived with: Dogs, kids Currently Living at: DC foster home - Happy needs a forever home! Check out more videos of Happy at: https://youtu.be/2ij6nIkxdS8. Hi there! My name is Happy and I'm a 53 pound, male, one-year-old terrier mix looking for my forever home. My name is Happy Cow, or Vaca Feliz if you speak my native tongue. I'm a 53 pound male, two year-old terrier mix, though there may actually be some cow in my lineage (unconfirmed). I survived Hurricane Maria's 100 mph winds to make it here from Puerto Rico, and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue was the proverbial roll of paper towels tossed in my direction. The most important thing to know about me is my deep silly streak. I hope you don't mind me rolling all over your carpets, playing ball like I'm the Washington Nationals' starting shortstop, becoming your leg rest if you aren't giving me enough ear scratches, or waking you up in the morning with a gigantic slurp from my cow-sized tongue. I do it all without barking much at all, but I'm no cow-ard. I just prefer to let my actions do the talking. I'm good with kids and other larger dogs, and I greet every new friend at the door with gentle hug and a vigorous tail wag. However, you definitely don't want me co-habitating with any small dogs, cats, squirrels, or Scabbers the Pet Rat. I will do fine sleeping in a crate, but let's be honest: you'll get a lot more love from me if you let me flop all over your furniture. I promise I'll keep the shedding to a minimum. I also adore long walks in the moooooo-nlight (get it?), I'm totally chill during long car rides, and I will be a kick-butt running partner when temperatures are above 10 degrees F. All of this small talk and I haven't even told you about my appetite. See, I'm a total foodie. As in, if it's food, I'm all in! Dog food, table scraps, unattended items on the kitchen counter, and especially bananas-- the riper the better. They grow them back in PR-- it's a comfort food thing, OK? (I'll eat beef too. Weird, I know, but don't judge.) I'm also all in for non-food items: tissues, napkins, Irish Spring deodorant soap, and other items TBD. Thanks to my four stomachs, my intestines are pretty hardy. No vet trips yet! And anyway, it's like my Grandma Bessie used to say: "To err is human, but to forgive is bovine." FOSTER UPDATE: Happy's full name on his records from Puerto Rico is actually Happy Cow, and he comes to that name in Spanish (Vaca Feliz). He is very smart and knows how to sit, walk on a leash, and use his crate. He loves car rides (and is very calm in the car). He is good with kids and dogs, but definitely not cats. His personality is laid back, calm and cuddly. We've only heard him make a bark once. He is a bit nervous of loud trucks and buses, and gives chase to bicycles (other than squirrels, those are the only things that have prompted leash pulling on walks). He does have some food guarding; and is an expert counter surfer and food snatcher, if given the opportunity. He prefers to sleep in his crate. He LOVES to give hugs and rest his head against you, and really is an all around sweetheart. Like most shelter dogs, Happy may need a refresher on house training. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and transportation to DC. Name: Hailey Best Guess for Breed: Lab mix Approximate Age: 1 year (dob Aug 2016) SEX: female Approximate Weight: 57 lbs Currently Living at: foster home Special Adoption Considerations: active, young dog, needs experienced dog owner and to be the only dog in the home My name is Hailey, but what I really want to be called is yours and I'll bet you a truck full of milk bones that I can wiggle my way into your heart! I am looking for an experienced dog owner and need to be the only dog in the home. I am very energetic and may need more than walks, and hope I find a home where I can do lots of running and playing. I am doing well with leash training and basic commands but like any young dog will need a home with structure so I can continue to learn and show you how smart I am. Foster update: We started fostering Hailey as an emergency foster for two weeks over the holidays. She moved right in enjoying chasing birds, squirrels and tennis balls in the backyard, following me around the house, and cuddling up to watch tv. She likes to hang out in her crate when we aren’t home. We do a morning and evening walk and she is learning her leash skills. She comes along when there are chores to run and waits patiently in the car. Hailey knows sit, down, stay (most of the time), and come. She also knows to shake hands and she’s quickly learning to “drop” the toy we are playing with. She has been introduced to halt and heel on our walks. On a fun walk she is asked to “slow down” with a slight correction when she starts pulling on her leash. She does have a thing with squirrels! Most importantly we have been working on a “quiet” command when another dog is in the vicinity: sensing her alert/ anxiety and before a growl or bark, and with a “quiet,” a treat and praise and distraction. Hailey is a smart, loving dog. She is wonderful to have around the house and will be as great a companion to you as she has been to us. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. A pup ready to dance into your heart! JITTERBUG NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! If you are viewing Jitterbug's bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information! Name: Jitterbug Best Guess for Breed: Retriever/shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 4 yrs SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 55 lbs Currently Living at: DC foster Has lived with: Dogs Special adoption considerations: None Meet Jitterbug! Jitterbug is a 4-year-old retriever/shepherd mix ready to dance her way into your heart! This 55 lb cutie was found wandering with no home but will be coming to DC as soon as we can find her a foster or adoptive home! She also would love to go to a fully fenced dog park to play with her buds! She would also do well on her own with a family to take her for long walks and/or runs. At 4-years-old Jitterbug is out of the puppy phase but that doesn't mean she won't need plenty of exercise! Jitterbug has not yet been tested with cats or kids, but we can do that if you have a kitty or kiddies in the house. Like most shelter dogs, Jitterbug may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Jitterbug has tested positive and has been treated for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and her heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting Jitterbug, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Ashley at ashleyh@luckydoganimalrescue.org asap! Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Elissa Kurtz (elissak@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. PETEY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: PETEY Best Guess for Breed: Terrier Mix Best Guess for Age: 1.5 years as of 6/8/17 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 45 - 50 lbs Has Lived With: Other dogs Currently Living at: local foster Special Considerations: Petey needs help working on polite leash manners when around other dogs. Hola! My name is Petey and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I was born and raised on the streets of Puerto Rico until some wonderful rescuers saved me from long days roaming around and being very hungry. Since then, I have learned how to be a good boy and I've gotta tell ya- I REALLY like living in a home! Check out this video of me in my current foster home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKyTLMYW6ZE! I got to travel on the plane all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone here will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft white coat with some brown spots just on my face! I've also got big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 1.5 years old and 45 - 50 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. I do really well with other dogs - as long as I am given a proper introduction. We are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! Woofs and tail wags, PETEY A NOTE FROM PETEY'S FOSTER PARENT: Petey is an extremely well mannered house guest. He is fully house trained and has had zero accidents in the 2+ weeks that he has been living with me. He is also crate trained and will go to his crate for bedtime, or if he is just wanting a nap. He does not jump on the furniture or bed (although if you invited him Im sure he would), he does not chew anything that he isn't supposed to, he does not get into the trash, he does not counter surf, he does not bark very much, and he will let you know if he needs to go out. He knows basic commands, such as sit, lay down, and stay and we work on these daily. He will even sit and stay while you fill his bowl. We are at the point that i don't crate him unless I know that I will be gone for 3+ hours. He does like to be outside and is pretty good at fetch, although he needs a bit more work on the "give" part of the game. He also does well at the dog park and will focus his time and energy to whatever balls are around more so than the other dogs. His leash manners have improved drastically and has cut down on his tendency to pull (still happens when he gets excited though). He has also made great strides with his leash anxiety and while he has his days, most days he is able to properly meet other dogs on leash without incident. There are definitely some tricks to this which I would be happy to share as I think this will be an ongoing thing to work on with Petey. Like most shelter dogs, Petey may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter.
