Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. All of the animals posted on our site have been temperament tested. While not all are in the immediate area, once we have processed and approved your application, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. Norma Jean is a beautiful girl with a lot of love and cuddles. She is a very strong girl that will do best with a quiet family and older considerate children. She is a good girl with a lab playfulness and is always ready to play and go for walks. Norma Jean is up to date on all her shots, she is spayed, perfectly housebroken and does not chew up things. Her greatest joy is to just snuggle up with you and enjoy a good TV program or even a game or two. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Although Norma Jean is more than happy to romp with other dogs, she cannot have other dogs get in her face, she is a dog who prefers to choose her own friends and she can be particular, therefore it is much better if she is an only child. Norma Jean needs to have a fenced yard. She is very prey driven and will not do well with cats and if she sees a rabbits, squirrels, or any other critter she will do her very best to get to it. Therefore, an invisible fence will not work for her. If you are interested in Norma Jean, please contact: rorrcanine@gmail.com *** Click here to sponsor this dog! ***

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. What do we know about Bentley? We know his mom was a German shepherd and his dad, well, he was a traveling surprise. Somebody with a bit longer hair and a really spectacular tail, for sure, because Bentley has a plume of a tail that wags a lot, as he is a happy dog. Our best guess is German shepherd/Leonberger/Malamute. He is picky sometmes about his canine friends. He has lots of energy and would love to live on a farm or perhaps somewhere with a big backyard and a family that liked long walks. Entering just the prime of his life at only 4 years old, or possibly less, he is hoping for an active family who will enjoy playing with him outdoors. People who like camping, jogging, hiking would be a real plus for him. Sadly, he lost his family when they moved to a place that doesn't allow dogs. He has always been treated with love and knows how to give it back and then some. He will be a loving, fun, loyal dog for you. Say the words "You're a good boy" and that tail will fan out and wag! Note: He is dog selective and it is important that it be understood that he likes some dogs and not others. If you are interested in Bentley Shepherd, please contact: rorrcanine@gmail.com and fill out an application for this wonderful boy *** Click here to sponsor this dog! ***

That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. If you are looking for an easy to love, sweet dog, Travis is your guy. His foster says "he is a laid back dog and he likes his walks. He doesn't jump and very calm. He is wonderful with other dogs." This is one good ole boy, ready to play sniff the grass in the yard and stretch out in the shade. This great temperament comes naturally to Travis, who is hoping to enjoy life to the fullest with his own person or family who live in the country. Travis is currently located in Berryville, VA. If you are a hound lover, let Travis become your new love. A SPECIAL NOTE TO YOU FROM HIS FOSTER: Travis is a wonderful Treeing Walker Hound who has had a rough past and is enjoying life more each day. He is great with other dogs, is too interested in cats to have one in the house with him, fine with school age children, but has never been around babies. He will need a fenced yard and 3 walks daily. He likes a soft dog bed and sleeps in a crate all night. He should not be crated other than that--except for car rides. Travis would be best with someone at home with him and with a dog friend. He has some health issues due to being hit by a car, but doesn't let this hold him back. He is laid back and happy to sleep away the day between walks and yard time. He is a former hunting dog, so pulls hard when in hunting mode and needs to be walked in a harness. Also, since he is still learning about living in a house he will sometimes chew up stuff. If you are the special person who wants to give Travis the care and companionship he needs and deserves please contact RORR. His foster mom will be happy to meet with you and talk to you about Travis. Interested in Travis? Please contact: rorrcanine@gmail.com *** Click here to sponsor this dog! ***

"Chester" is an adorable senior male Hound mix who made his debut at the HSOV on February 10, 2016. This handsome gentleman has a tan short smooth coat with cream highlights, subtle black shading on his back, bowed front legs, a long tail, and a darling Hound face with soulful brown eyes and large floppy ears. "Chester" has a sweet, loving disposition and has become a favorite of our kennel techs and volunteers. Everyone has fallen in love with this guy J "Chester" loves attention and looks forward to walks and spending time with his fan club members. He was neutered on February 23, 2016 and was also given rabies vaccine. "Chester" weighs 50-55 lbs. and could easily gain a few pounds to fill out his slim physique. He appears to be housebroken. These updated photos were taken on March 21, 2016, and it seems that "Chester" keeps getting more handsome each time we see him! He was chosen to participate in an adoption event at Pet Supplies Plus in Vienna WV on March 19th, and we were soooo proud of him. "Chester" was treated like a rock star and so many people were oohing and aawing over him as he pranced around the store wearing his cute pastel 'Adopt Me' bandana. He did extremely well with other dogs and crowds of people (including lots of small children). His volunteer date for the event brought "Chester" back to the shelter with a brand new toy (a bright orange plush ball) that he had chosen himself. We took a short video of him carrying his new toy around in his mouth and posted it on our facebook page. We introduced "Chester" to some of our free-roaming shelter mascot kitties when he was outdoors for photos, and he simply ignored them J However he does like to chase small animals so he should go to a home with NO small animals or cats just to be safe. This sweet boy truly deserves a home where he will be spoiled in the manner to which he would like to become accustomed. If you are interested in adopting Chester, please contact: Celeste at cr_ridgway@yahoo.com

Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. Flash is a special boy. He was heartworm positive and underwent treatment when he first came to the rescue. He got very sick from the treatment. It has taken him a while to recover and be his lovable self again but now he is happy and healthy. He is a wonderful house dog, housebroken, neutered, shots up to date, and does not chew things up. Flash says, I am really looking for a home where it is not too active and adults or respective children over 16. Flash needs time to adjust to new environments but will be a good loyal companion if you just give him time to adjust. He needs to be introduced slowly. Flash is selective about his dog friends, he does not like for other dogs to get in his face and again slow introductions will provide him the time he needs to get acquainted and see if he can make a new friend. He loves to play ball and will play fetch with you and then come in and settle down while you relax too. Flash has also had obedience training and has learned a great deal from training. Seriously though, he really does love people and we hope that you are the one who is willing to give him a chance at a forever home. His only requirement is that you get lotsa balls because he is going to require lots of play time..... Remember, no cats, slow introductions to new people and dogs dogs and lotsa balls..... If you are interested in Flash, please contact: rorrcanine@gmail.com

Buddy was surrendered by his owner on October 5, 2016, along with 5 other dogs because he could no longer care for them. Buddy has a calm, gentle disposition. He is a sweet dog who makes you want to hold him close and tell him that he will find a great home where he will be loved and treated like a real family member. Buddy walks gently on a leash and already loves the kennel techs/volunteers who are caring for him. His ears look as though they’ve been bitten by flies or suffered frostbite at some point. He is very mellow in his ways and so affectionate. Buddy has done well with our volunteers' kids and appears to ignore cats. Bruno is a super cute, corgi size adoptable. Just look at those radar ears! When Bruno was surrendered to the shelter, his owners stated that they could not afford to care for him. We could see that Bruno had a lot of life and love left to give, so we pulled him into foster care. Bruno is diabetic and does require daily insulin injections, but the cost is quite reasonable. Despite having vision loss, Bruno navigates his foster home and yard expertly. We love a senior and hope that someone out there will have a soft spot for a loving special needs boy. Bruno prefers calm dogs and older, calm children. If you would like to learn more about Bruno, please email us at: opundo@operationunderdog.org
