Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee $200 Hi there! My name is Buddy. I was surrendered by my owner who could not take care of me anymore. She said I was not good with kids. I really did not enjoy being in a dog shelter. When the dog shelter people would say my name in front of my cage, I would sit up and wave my paws up and down. I was trying to tell them I was ready to be adopted! I am so happy now to be fostered by a MARS volunteer and can't wait to find a great forever home to live out my golden years and keep someone wonderful company. I am a kind and sweet guy who likes affection. I have very bad cataracts and I can barely see anything at all - but that doesn't slow me down. I am house trained but I may mark my territory initially so please watch me to prevent this. I am dreaming of being next to my forever person or people and hope you choose me! Buddy would love to be in a home with less dogs -he even would be fine as an only dog with just a person to keep company. Currently he is in a home with 5 other dogs and he does not like all the commotion. Please feel free to fill out an ADOPTION APPLICATION by clicking on the button below. Thank You! or //

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He and his canine companions were rescued from a hoarder here in MN. He is great with other dogs, both large and small. He's even great with cats! His foster mom has him crate trained and Arboe is learning to walk on a leash. What a smart boy! Arboe does well on a tie out or fenced yard but he cannot be trusted with invisible fencing or off leash. He would be spooked and bolt - something no one wants. Arboe will need to be kept on a tie out, even inside a fenced area as he can easily climp and jump any height of fence. Arboe needs a home with a confident dog who will show him the ropes and continue his confidence building. Will you please be Arboe's angel? Click on the Adopt buttons below. or //

      Location: Minneapolis, MN
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $150 Meet Stasha! Stasha has had a hard time in her few years on earth. Stasha was adopted adopted out of MARS two years ago to someone who we thought would give her a forever home. With out contacting MARS that person then gave Stasha to another family. That family fell on hard times and lost their home. Stasha was then handed over to a Animal Control. There was a strong chance that Stasha would have been PTS by animal control but because Stasha had a microchip Animal Control was able to locate MARS and asked if MARS would take her back. We said YES! Stasha is a sweet girl who loves to meet new human friends! Stasha likes to play with a squeak ball and will run short distances to get it and will bring it back. She knows "give". She likes to play tug of war. Her favorite thing is to get the hidden treat out of her toy. She will drop a toy at your feet to let you know she would like to play. Stasha likes to cuddle and is a very alert guard dog. Her new human family will need training on how to tell Stasha which which noises are OK and which she needs to worry about. Stasha will do best in a home as the only dog because she was attacked by other dogs and is now fearful of other dogs. Stasha has been receiving training on being calm around other dogs. She has made great progress but needs more training to succeed as a pack member. MARS is willing to provide the training to help her succeed. Please share her story with friends, family, FaceBook, Twitter and others. You never know if someone in your circle could be her forever family. Posted Breed: Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee - $350 Hi there! I am Bess, a Beagle/Gazelle/ballerina mix. Seriously – you should see my graceful moves and balance! I spring when I walk and run. For that reason - I do need a 6' safely fenced-in yard because I can jump a 4' fence with ease. I also need some room to run and play!! Being tied up on a lead – really isn’t going to work well for my breed or my zest for life. My human thinks I am part Brittany Spaniel or pointer. I go into full point when something catches my attention beyond the fence. I am a very friendly and happy girl! I am curious about my surroundings. I learned about cuddling and I love it! I am so in love with people that after I do my business outside (yes, I am house trained!), I am excited to go back inside for more love after I have sniffed the perimeter of the yard. I still puppy bite because all I played with before were other dogs in my former life. I am learning biting is not what humans like. I want to please. I really do. I also love toilet paper rolls – but I’m learning that is a “Leave it” as are socks and shoes and mittens. It is so cool though to watch toilet paper unroll all through the house and then pounce on it with the cats! I get along well with my five resident siblings (German Shepherd (8), Llapso Cocker (14) and Chihuahua (15) and two cats. I’m learning that cats aren’t squirrels. In fact, now the cats engage me in play sometimes but I have to remember I am larger than they are and I need to leave those puffy tails alone. I am quiet for a Beagle mix and will only bark if one of the other dogs hears something at the door or the coyote is out beyond the fence in the woods and my human must know!! I love marrow bones and am learning the joys of bully sticks and Kong toys with peanut butter. I also love squeaky toys and balls. I am getting a taste of everything wonderful in a home and I love it all! I love curling up on the back of the couch with the cats and sleeping in the sun from the window.. I am crated during the day for up to 6 hours while my foster mom works. At night, I like to crawl under the covers and sleep next to my human. I have some night terrors still though and while they are fewer in coming – sometimes I wake up really terrified from a bad dream. I think I scared my human the first couple of times but she talked softly to me and reassured me I was safe and no one would ever hurt me again. I believe her and so I snuggle back in and go to sleep. It made my human cry on more than one occasion that my life had been that scary before. I just thought you should know that about me. I love to go for car rides and I am leash trained although I still pull a bit. There’s so much to enjoy in life now and I just can’t wait to do it all! Oh, I almost forgot! I sit when its meal time and wait for my dish nicely– while the other nuts circle around the human and make her life difficult! I love men and women though I do gravitate to men a tich more. I am probably too playful for a family with small kids. I don’t want to accidently hurt you while playing and have you not like me. I am ready for my forever home and ready to love my new family to the moon and back! Will you let me love you!? Will you love me and teach me more? Can you help me learn about this thing called the, “good life”? Please feel free to fill out an ADOPTION APPLICATION by clicking on the button below. Thank You! or //

Let this not stop you from meeting this guy. We bet he will let you sign his little leg cast! Meet Rafael! This dog is simply the best! Here's what his foster mom says you should know about this special guy... - Greets me at the door with excitement and hugs - House trained. He always lets me know when he wants to go out. - Barks to let me know when he wants to come back in the house. - Loves his walks. Does not like to get his backyard dirty but will when we can't walk. - Well trained. Comes when called. - He has the most beautiful eyes, full of love for his best friend (me). :-) - Not a barker but a good watchdog. Announces arrival of new people and quickly calms down once he knows everyone is safe. - Not a runner. Happy to stay home to protect his owners. - Great with other dogs his same size or smaller after a slow introduction. Not good around big, black dogs. There must be a story here but I don't know what it is. - Not a lap dog. Follows me around and jumps up for a quick hug but then stays close by. - Loves being brushed which helps minimize shedding. - Sleeps in his bed next to our bed. Jumps up only when one of us gets up, leaving plenty of room for him. - Needs that special forever home to make a happy transition.
