More About Mastiff Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Meet Bear! Bear was rescued from a shelter in AR. He is estimated at 5 years old. He looks like he's had a rough life before coming to us. He has callouses on his legs indicating he was probably living outside on rough surface. His coat was thin and patchy but has improved now that we've got him on a good diet. Bear has been good with other dogs and is learning to live with cats as well. He's done great with kids. This boy is really just a big teddy bear. This poor guy has been through a lot since we've had him. Bear tested positive for heartworms and started treatment, but then started having several fainting spells, so the vet felt it was best to stop the treatment as he was worried Bear's heart wouldn't be able to take it. Bear also had surgery to remove bladder stones that were obtructing him. He now is on a prescription diet to keep those from reforming, which costs approximately $85 a bag. Despite all of this, he has remained and loving and loyal companion. He is looking for a special home, is that home yours? If you aren't able to adopt, please consider a donation for his care! Meet Duke. Duke was surrendered to GPMR in hopes that we could find him a loving home where he could be an inside dog and part of a family instead of being kept outside. Well Duke has been introduced to the joys of AC and he’s a big fan! He is smart boy who is learning how to walk on wood floors, how to crate and sleep in the room with his family. He is an easy going big guy with the typical laid back mastiff personality. His loves laying at your feet, leaning on you and getting belly rubs. He is heartworm positive and has already started his treatment. Duke is about 3.5-4 years old. He does well with other dogs but we don't know about cats. Young kids make him a little nervous so he would be best in a home with older children or an adult only home. Duke is being fostered in Tulsa, OK. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

Meet Cheyenne! This sweet girl was found wandering a country road in horrible shape. She is one of the worst starvation cases we've ever seen. She was about 1/2 the weight that she should be and missing about 3/4 of her hair. Cheyenne was rescued by another rescuer and transferred to GPMR for her medical rehabiliation. Despite the neglect she's suffered, Cheyenne is one of the sweetest girls we've ever met. She has such a gentle nature that this breed is known for. She is just happy to be fed and loved now. Cheyenne will be on medical hold probably until October. She needs to have xrays of her hips due to the limping we're seeing in her back end. But she needs to be a healthy weight enough to have sedation first and that will take time. In just 2 weeks she gained 16 pounds, so she is well on her way! UPDATE: Due to Goliath's age and advancing arthritis, he is now a "hospice" foster and will stay with his foster dad for whatever quality time he has left. It's costly for the rescue to keep up with the monthly expenses for our hospice dogs, please consider a donation for their care! Meet Goliath! Although his age in years is 11, his "Spirit Age" is so much younger. Goliath, sadly, was surrendered by his owners when they moved and were unable to take him. He is very shy with strangers at first, but warms up quickly, especially when offered belly rubs! Goliath prefers to be around an older more mature crowd, so a family without young children is necessary. He has spent most of his life outside, and is now working on adjusting to being an inside dog. He has shown his foster family that his most treasured discovery is his inside soft doggie bed! Such a simple discovery with life changing results. Goliath came to GPMR with ear and eye infections, both of which have been treated. He did test positive for heartworms, which is has not shown to be severe and can be treated with monthly heart worm prevention. He is also on supplements for arthritis, which help him act his "Spirit Age". Goliath's trademark, and funniest trait, is his super long tongue which tends to hang out on the floor when he is laying down. This gentle giant would be a great addition to the right family so get your applications in today! Goliath is being fostered in Tulsa, OK. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

Meet Tyson! He was rescued by a good samaritan when their neighbor was not caring for him proerly. They nursed Tyson back to health but wanted him to go to a family where he could be provided with the veterinary care that he needed. Tyson's vet visit was full of information. We learned that he is at least 10 years old. He came in with terrible skin and ear infections which we are currently treating. He had fleas and intestinal parasites, both which have been treated. He unfortunately tested positive for heartworm but the vet doesn't recommend treatment due to his age. The vet also suspects Tyson has testicular cancer as he was never neutered which would have prevented this condition. Due to Tyson's advanced age and medical issues, he is considered a "Hospice Foster" meaning his foster home will provide a loving home and keep him happy for as much time as he left. So far he seems unaware he has these health problems and is in good spirits. Please consider making a donation for his care as he will have several follow up vet visits! Tyson has an amazing personality and temperament wise is a great represenation of the Mastiff breed. He loves meeting new people, being close to his foster parents and of course begging for food at the table. He's getting a lot of TLC in foster care. It's costly for the rescue to keep up with the monthly expenses for our hospice dogs, please consider a donation for their care! Tyson is being fostered near Little Rock, AR. He is food and treat motivated so it should be pretty easy to teach this spunky 7 year old a few new tricks. He knows the basics and is cooperative as long as there’s something in it for him. Titan plays well with other dogs who are larger, with proper introductions. He has the typical mastiff temperament, including a little stubborn streak when it’s time to be crated, he responds well to bribery for now. Titan is house trained and hasn't exhibited any destructive behavior at all. His bark to let strangers know he is present is just as intimidating as his massive size, but the truth is, he is a teddy bear to his family. He is on the active side for his age and will need daily walks or playtime in the yard. Titan has completed a basic obedience class and did great!
