Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed (medium coat). Hello my name is Chunky! I am a hunk of love when it comes to my personality. I am a year young, full of energy and spunk, but not too hyper to listen. I thrive with a leader, and do well with those that can teach me the do’s and don’ts of society. I came to Kate’s rescue when I was very young, about 8 weeks of age. My previous owners had dumped me in a field and left me for dead! I had a terrible skin condition that nearly killed me, and made me less than appealing in appearance. But Kate’s found me and took me in. The rescue director personally nursed me back to health in her home and I grew like a weed! I love her dearly, but I dream of the day I find a couch of my own with a family I do not have to share with other foster siblings. I have been looking for a year for my family, with no such luck. I am a handsome boy, can’t you tell?! I weight over 70 pounds with a stocky body that just adds to my appeal. I am fostered in a home with other dogs of all sizes, and even cats. For the last year I have been fine with them but recently my behaviors have changed. Due to this I would do better in a home with no cats, or smaller dogs, and only big dogs like me. I would love to have a fur sibling close to my size and age to play with. A calmer male or even better a female would be ideal. I love calmer kids, given I have been in foster so long I am not familiar with anything outside of my foster home and scare very easily. Older children of 7 and up that understand I might get scared and bark are recommended, if any at all. I do great with them, just might scare them if they scare me. I am potty trained, I know better than to go in the house. I love to sleep in the bed if you let me, and cuddle all night long. I love to go for walks, and I walk perfectly on a leash. I am a bit timid in new places alone, but with a furry companion or a human to let me know it is ok I do just fine. I behave very well in the car, but do not like visiting new areas currently. Though once I am used to traveling and learn it is safe that could change. I am neutered, up to date on all my vaccinations and microchiped. My ideal human would be a female, I am a bit timid with men and quick movements. I am used to my fosters home and routines so anything new makes me very unsure. I am not a biter when I am scared, I bark and try to run away, but if cornered and forced to confront something scary I might bite. I need a human that will be my service human, to help my anxiety and teach me the world outside of my foster home bubble is not as scary as it seems. My human must have patience with me. Yelling scares me, and if you scare me I do not want to come to you. So lots of soft calm tones and hugging to help me feel comfortable is needed. I would make an amazing companion animal for a woman living on her own. I am being babysat on a farm, and it is too much for me out here. So city living might be best where I cannot see through my fence at the scary world. Wont you please help me find my forever home? If you think I might fit your family please contact this page, or Kate’s Rescue for Animals directly and be sure to tell them Chunky sent you!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 150. Hi. My name is Eric and I'm looking for a person to call my own. My foster mom says I am a really good boy!!! They say they think I am 7 or 8 years old and am pretty mellow, whatever that means. I just know that I have been in this thing called "rescue" for way too long and would like a place to hang out and relax with my very own humans. I was in boarding for over a year before this lady named Tara pulled up in a big white van and picked me up and never made me go back. I am really happy now because I get to go for walks and go to the park and do things that I hear all dogs are supposed to do. My foster takes me to the river and even let me walk in the Modesto Christmas parade. That was fun! I wouldn't mind a doggie brother or sister. In fact, I would love that!! But no kitties please. I do not like them quite so much. I do like kids however, and don't mind giving kisses every now and then. But I wouldn't recommend putting me in a home with small children. I love them a lot but I don't realize how big I am sometimes. And I wouldn't want to hurt any kids. I would feel really, really bad. I love belly rubs and squeaker toys!! I also enjoy car rides and my foster mom says I'm pretty good on a leash. But sometimes I see a cat or a bicycle and I want to chase them. I don't like those bicycles either. They move too fast for me. I did go to a Harley-Davidson adoption event today and did great! I had a long day though. I met lots of new people and new doggie friends. I even got a new squeaker toy and lots of love from some cute kiddos. Time for this old man to hit the sheets. If you want to know anything else about me or would like to meet me, please email us @ happydance@katesrescue.org with “Eric” as the header.

He loves to give kisses and loves his belly rubbed. Sebastian is tiny but fast little guy, he's quick to call dibs for snuggle time and just loves to be loved on. Sebastian does well with older children but not with younger or jitter children. He prefers to be indoors and will bark to be let back inside once he's all finished up outside. Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (long coat). Hello world! I am Jessica. I was previously known to the rescue world as “Baby Jessica” when I was first found just over a year ago. I was adopted but my new family could not give me the care that I require so I am back in the rescue world looking for “the one”. I have a condition where the hip joints in my back legs are missing, so my rear leg mobility is a bit “stiff”. I am a happy go lucky girl; the handicap as others call it does not slow me down one bit! I am able to run and play with big and small dogs, at my foster moms home I had 3 bigger playmates and a few smaller ones too I did magnificent with them all. I don’t like to see my stiff legs as a handicap; I have just as much love to give as the next dog, just need a breather here and there. The vet says currently there is nothing they can, or need to do for my “condition”. As I mature and get older a cart might be needed to help with my old bones, but that’s a long ways away! I am barely a year young and got the energy to prove it. I need a loving family that understands my breed’s ways, and that can keep up with my puppy energy and teach me right from wrong. I am eager to please, but my attention span is rather small so you may have to bribe me with a few treats! I am spayed, up to date, and microchiped. I do good with dogs of all sizes, cats and kids. Though between you and me I could knock the tiny ones over and they might hurt me hanging on my back end so older children are best. Please help me find my forever place! If you are interested in me send an email to katesrescue.org with the header “Jessica” and a rep will contact you with plenty of questions to make sure you are right for me.
