Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Choko Bell, with his irresistible smile and handsome golden coat, wants to be the belle of a lucky person's home. This loving and loveable boy is a lovebug who quickly warms up to his new human acquaintances, hoping for cuddles and belly rubs - or just the chance to sit by them and soak up lovin'. He gives lots of hugs and kisses, and rubs on his people like a kitten. Choko Bell is a playful boy who likes to chase balls and play with his squeaky toys, then do zoomies around the play yard. A smart boy, he's curious and loves exploring new territory. Choko plays well with other dogs and used to live with cats. He also got along with a mini-pig on a play date once. Choko is also crate-trained and responds very well to rewards. He knows sit, down, come, and stay, and answers to his name. He likes learning new tricks and playing games. He walks well on his leash and is up for adventures on the Lady Bird Lake trail. Choko has high energy and would be perfect as a running buddy on the Austin Boardwalk or for playing catch at Zilker on a warm afternoon. Choko will be a wonderful addition to an adult-only home, ideally one with a yard to explore. He's more than ready to lavish all that love on his new adoptive parents. Come visit and see if you can be the beneficiary of all that adoration. All APA adoptions come with free behavior assistance through APA's behavior team. And remember, when you adopt a dog from APA, you are saving not one, but two lives - the life of the dog you're bringing into your home, and the next dog APA can save in the adopted dog's place.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. We've rustled up a good 'un here! Rustler is a handsome, healthy young adult who would love to settle in with a family where this fun dog will put a smile on everyone's face. Rustler is overall a pretty chill guy but he's ready for anything - a long walk or run, hanging out in the yard or even just some couch surfing. He doesn't need much and doesn't have an overly energetic demeanor that needs constant attention. He's just a cool guy who's very affectionate and loves to be with his people. He's got an ever-present bounce in his step that reflects his sunny outlook and just wants to be everyone's friend. Rustler is fantastic on a leash and doesn't get distracted by other people or dogs, as he keeps his focus on his walking partner. He is extremely obedient and behaves very well without a lot of management. He's lived in home before so he knows to follow the rules. Rustler also enjoys learning new things and is in the Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modelled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Rustler has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! He is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," and coming when called. Once Rustler successfully completes all the skills on his training plan he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Rustler is working hard to become a wonderful pet, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with him after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193. Rustler's looking for a home where he can get some cuddle time and a soft place to lay his brindle head. Come meet him and see if he's right for yours!

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Sparky is a sparkler of a boy and really just a giant lovebug who thinks he's a lapdog. This sweetie's foster says he's one of the most cuddly dogs she's ever been around. He loves to lay his head in his person's lap while they stroke his head or just snuggle on the bed or couch. Sparky has occasional bursts of energy, but he's mostly a calm, well-mannered pup who walks well on leash. He's also crate trained, house-trained and answers to "sit" and "come", though he's still working on "stay". When he's in a playful mood, Sparky loves to play with his squeaky toys and he's happiest when his human throws the toy for him to chase or plays tug-o-war with him. Sometimes he'll play fetch the toy and bring it back, but he mostly just likes to throw it to himself. Sparky will be a wonderful addition to a home where he can be a companion to someone who wants to give him love, snuggles and long walks with lots of time for sniffing. Come meet him and see if he's right for yours.

      Frodo

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Frodo is a party animal. He loves to have a good time, all the time. He's also super smart and very sweet, so if you consider yourself more of an extrovert, you may have found an excellent wingman in Frodo. Frodo will play with you all day if you let him. He especially loves to play with lacrosse balls, and enjoys showing up the high school team by making an occasional interception. He also loves being loved on, and gives lots of love in return. The most adorable thing about him is his one eyebrow. He is a very expressive dog anyways. You won't ever struggle to know how Frodo is feeling, but his eyebrow puts him over the top. Frodo is house trained, walks pretty well on a leash, and is well-mannered when left alone in the house. He is very treat motivated, and will do just about anything for a snack. In fact, Frodo is in APA's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week toward the goal of passing the American Kennel Club's CGC test! Frodo has been working hard to be a dog you can take anywhere with pride. To pass the CGC test, a dog must demonstrate obedience and general reliability in real world situations. Dogs in APA's CGC program learn to sit and down, walk nicely on leash, sit calmly when approached by strangers or another dog, won't approach people or dogs without permission, greet people appropriately, stay in a sit or down until told and come when called. As part of APA's CGC program you can work with APA to continue to build a training relationship with Frodo after adoption and get officially CGC certified for free! Bisque

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. We're not going to leave out the best part - we're here to mention the bisque! Bisque is a low-key, but fun young adult. Bisque has lost his sight, but isn't let blindness get in the way of enjoying life. He is a goofy, playful dog who loves being around people. He's been spending time in an APA! foster home, and has shown us that he will make a fun companion. Losing his eyesight must have sharpened Bisque's hearing. He loves to hear praise and his favorite people's voices, and he'll respond quickly. He's not a super-affectionate dog, but he does enjoy some occasional petting and head-scratching. Bisque will need a patient family who can help him get used to his new environment. It will take him a bit of time to adjust to his new surroundings and learn his way around. But once he does, he's got a low-stress, casual attitude towards life that lets him enjoy his daily routine. Bisque has a lower energy level, so he doesn't need a great deal of stimulation during the day. He enjoys some outside time so that he can sniff around and explore, but he doesn't need heavy-duty exercise. Bisque would probably best enjoy a quieter, low-energy home. Concerned about his blindness? Once he gets used to your home's layout his needs won't be much different than any other dog. Bisque would love to meet you and share his carefree approach to life! And remember that when you adopt, you'll also be helping another dog who can his place in our program.

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. To Dax, every day would be Independence Day - if he just didn't need those humans to toss his tennis balls. This tiny, spunky boy is happy to entertain himself. But he will check in with his humans for attention, especially when it involves those tennis balls. And treats! He loves small, squeaky tennis balls and will prance to pick one up, then toss it into the air himself to catch again. He's also fond of other small squeaky toys. Once Dax is done with playtime, he's content to just hang out and once again display his independence. Like a little king, he's pleased to interact with you, but you need his permission first. Then he'll give kisses and accept a cuddle. This feisty boy walks well on a leash and he promises to be a delightful companion

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Traveler is an affectionate Chihuahua mix with a cute upturned nose and adorable head tilt. He lavishes kisses on his humans and is comfortable with being held. Traveler likes to nap on the couch while his people watch TV. This cutie also enjoys grabbing a plush toy and energetically throwing it around. He's generally calm, but will run zoomies around the yard. This sweetie doesn't mind being left alone. He's good in a crate and can entertain himself, especially if he has a chewy to occupy him Traveler can happily live with respectful dogs. He'll give kisses to and run around with well-matched dogs. He seems neutral with cats: he's curious about them, but doesn't want to bother them, so that match may be a possibility. Traveler is seeking an adopter with time for all his loving; is it yours?

      Mickey

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund. Mickey is a fabulous walker on his leash, eager for neighborhood walks. And he likes playing with soft toys and is fun to watch as he zooms around the play yard. He'd love access to a little pool for some happy splashing. He is good at leaving cats alone, and even seems a little scared of them. Mickey will be a great addition to an adult-only home, where his people can take him for walks, chill on the couch with him and let him be their adorable watchdog. Mickey plays very well the dogs in his playgroup, if sometimes rowdy with smaller dogs. He just wants to be in charge of the group, so he's happiest when his playmates are on the submissive side, big or small. He currently lives with three larger dogs and enjoys thinking he is the boss of them. He's somewhat the opposite with humans. He's fearful with strangers and can be nippy with people he doesn't know and trust, especially children who approach his kennel. He prefers females over males, but can warm up to males. He needs to have a human who isn't afraid of him and understands how to handle his "naughty" behavior. But once he gets well acquainted and comfortable, he becomes his human friend's cuddle buddy, happy to hang out by his person's side, or even in her lap. He can be a loyal little guard dog, ready to alert his person to any evil that might be lurking. He is always alert, and may do best in a non-apartment home. Come meet this little guy today!

      Breed: Dachshund
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Beagle. Petunia is an easy going, playful love bug. Her current foster says her favorite thing to do is chase critters in the yard. She's always on a hunting excursion. She's also equally content to hang around close to her people and observe. Sweet Petunia loves to cuddle, and will gently ask for chin scratches, ear rubs, and belly pats. She does very well with other dogs, and seems to really like kids. She is an angel in her crate, walks wonderfully on her leash, and always comes when she's called. She doesn't bark much, and is an eager learner. She truly aims to please. Petunia does require a little TLC as she struggles with incontinence. She is on some prescription food that helps her out, and she's content to wear a diaper if that's a preference. It's pretty adorable too! There's nothing quite like the awesome greeting this girl will give her people when they get home! She's full of excitement! Her foster raves about her beautiful soulful eyes, and her cute "1st position ballet dancer turned out legs. Petunia is such a wonderful companion, and is excited to find her forever family. She would love having other dog siblings, and would do well with kids in the home as well. She has so much love to give, and can't wait to have it so deservedly returned. Come meet this little lady! She'll win you over with her spunk!
