A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Feist / Mixed (short coat). Quinn, recently saved from Wythe County Shelter, is quite the mover for an older guy. He has been heartworm tested (negative), neutered and updated on vaccines. He is a 7 year old Feist and he would prefer a home with no other pets but children age 10 and above would be great. He loves to run in a fenced in yard and then snuggle up for loving. Quinn would make a great running companion for joggers; he will be able to keep up and go the distance. By observing Quinn, we think he lived out in the country, far from any traffic, clanging, or urban noises. Quinn shies easily when he hears these unnatural sounds. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). At 10 years old this little guy has the get-up-n-go of dogs half his age. We fell in love with Buddy instantly and he came to us as if he had been here all his life.He is always happy, gets along with all the other dogs and he is cat friendly as well. Buddy loves to play fetch with a ball and he is very quick; he will bring the ball back and adjust it in his mouth so you can play tug-of-war with him. He also will chill on the couch or in your lap. Buddy loves his people in a new home he may take some time to adjust. He is looking for a home with someone that understands the Chihuahua and Dachshund characteristics. He is up to date on vaccinations, just had a dental cleaning & polishing, and is just a healthy happy go lucky little boy. He only weighs 14 pounds.  To learn about our Adoption Process and to apply visit www.pawsforseniors.org/adoptapp.html Questions or concerns may be sent to adopt@pawsforseniors.org Paws For Seniors P.O. Posted Breed: Pekingese / Tibetan Spaniel / Mixed (long coat). Prince deserves to live life like a Prince. He was surrendered when his owners could not take care of him. After a trip to the groomer, we discovered he was a truly beautiful boy beneath all of the mats and mess. Prince is neutered, up to date on shots, and is heartworm negative. He loves to play with his stuffed toys and also plays catch. He will drop the ball at your feet and give you a little kiss. He gets along well with his foster brothers and sisters but he is not a fan of cats. Location: Bealeton, VA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Mixed (medium coat). At 16 years and 7 months old, 8 pound Tiny is the oldest and proudest member of the Fluvanna Fab 5, w ho came to us when their owners had to give them up when they had to move from their home. This decision did not come easy for them and it was very emotional when they were transferred to Paws for Seniors. They stay in touch to see how the 5 boys are doing. Tiny came to us very thin and under weight; he has had a wellness exam along with full blood work , a dental, neuter, and age appropriate vaccinations. Amazingly, at his age he is doing very well and just wants a lap to snuggle on and a nice soft bed to nap on. He will also follow you around the house. He gets along with other dogs, cats and older kids. Tiny has bonded with Tippy one of the other elderly poms who just about has the same energy level and is the same size. These two are a wonderful pair together and are looking for a nice quiet and comfortable place to retire where they can live out the time they have left. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). 9 year old AJ is foster daddy's (sweet pea). When AJ first came to us he was very timid and shy, didn't know what a leash was, and would not let you pick him up. Roll forward, 2 months later and he has turned into a cuddle-bug, loves going for walks and just loves to nestle in your arms. He is not pushy as he also likes to lay around on his bed. He is crate trained and considers his playpen/crate as his man-cave. This little 7 pound, boy has done a 360 degree turn as far as trusting people and wanting them close to him. He has pearly white teeth, up to date on vaccinations, and is very healthy. He gets along with cats, dogs, and older children and would make a great addition to any home. We love him but he needs a home where he can receive all the love and attention he so deserves.
