A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Rex

      Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (short coat). It seems that the Jack Russell Breeds can outlast most other canine breeds and Rex is living proof. At a very young age of 12, Rex has the energy and "get-up-n-go" has a dog half his age. His blood work came back excellent. teeth are good and no lumps and bumps. He is ready to play or just chill in your lap for cuddle time. We personally feel that Rex would do well with another dog around that he could hang around with. He would be great for a family with older children and would also need a fenced yard. Jack is up to date on his rabies and distemper and is ready for a new and final chapter in his life. Posted Breed: Terrier / Brussels Griffon / Mixed (medium coat). Oh my goodness! Just look at me. I am the most handsome boy in all the land. I am somewhere north of 6 years old and a terrier mix of some kind. Nobody really knows my history because I was found as a stray. Since I got picked up, the nice people have groomed me and got rid of all the pesky fleas and tics. I got all of my shots and they even neutered me. I like other dogs to play with and am looking for a family to have fun times with. I am considered special needs because I am pretty much deaf (but I'm pretty good at hand signals). We would recommend a fenced yard. Breed: Jack-Rat Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Boomer was surrendered to a local shelter when he did not get along with the family's new baby. He is a 9 year old, neutered Jack Russell/Rat Terrier. He is house broken and gets along with the other foster dogs. He also gets along with older children. As far as cats go, he likes to "check them out" a little too much but can be called off easily. He knows sit, down and a few other commands and is crate trained. He loves to sleep under the covers in foster mommies bed. He is an excellent cuddler and all around good boy. He is looking for a place to call home. Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (short coat). **Special Needs** Thea is blind and mostly deaf but that doesn't stop her! She is super sweet and loves everyone she meets. She is totally blind but can hear certain sounds like other dogs barking. She will come if you clap your hands. She gets along with other dogs and cats, as long as they don't scare her. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on all of her vaccines. She will spin in circles when she needs to go out. Thea has lived with other dogs and we recommend that she has a friend to help her along in life. She would also love a home where the owners do not re-arrange the furniture. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Collie / Mixed (medium coat). Tigger is a long hair female Dachshund/Collie mix who came to us soon after her owner passed away. She ruled the nest and was pampered all her life and had a comfy spot in her dad's bed. Tigger is timid and shy when she first gets to know you but warms up quickly. She would do best in a quiet home with no other dogs or one companion dog about her size. She is up to date on her vaccinations, had a dental on July 6, 2016 and over-all health is good. She is housebroken and will go to the door when she needs to do her business. She loves to lounge around on the sofa or in a comfy dogie bed close to her loved ones. She would be great for a senior citizen looking for a loving companion. Posted Breed: Feist / Mixed (short coat). Quinn, recently saved from Wythe County Shelter, is quite the mover for an older guy. He has been heartworm tested (negative), neutered and updated on vaccines. He is a 7 year old Feist and he would prefer a home with no other pets but children age 10 and above would be great. He loves to run in a fenced in yard and then snuggle up for loving. Quinn would make a great running companion for joggers; he will be able to keep up and go the distance. By observing Quinn, we think he lived out in the country, far from any traffic, clanging, or urban noises. Quinn shies easily when he hears these unnatural sounds.
