A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Bealeton, VA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). At 9 pounds and 4 years old, CoCo thinks he is the biggest guy in the house. He runs and plays with other dogs that are 3 times his size. He is kind of timid when he first meets you but once he feels safe in his surroundings, his personality blossoms. One of his favorite things to do is lay next to his foster daddy while he works on the computer. When it's TV time, CoCo is right there in daddy's or mommy's lap. CoCo will alert bark and let you know when someone is coming to the door. CoCo is up to date on vaccinations and recently had his teeth cleaned; he passed his wellness exam with flying colors. He did great at the adoption even when strangers held him and snuggled up. He can be cautious with strangers but is very tolerant. CoCo can be with a family with or without other pets but we feel he would do better with a friend because he loves to play and hang out with a canine buddy. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Bealeton, VA
Posted Breed: Feist / Mixed (short coat). Quinn, recently saved from Wythe County Shelter, is quite the mover for an older guy. He has been heartworm tested (negative), neutered and updated on vaccines. He is a 7 year old Feist and he would prefer a home with no other pets but children age 10 and above would be great. He loves to run in a fenced in yard and then snuggle up for loving. Quinn would make a great running companion for joggers; he will be able to keep up and go the distance. By observing Quinn, we think he lived out in the country, far from any traffic, clanging, or urban noises. Quinn shies easily when he hears these unnatural sounds. Comet is a courtesy post. please. contact Madison at 7039940432 or madisonr.ross@hotmail.com to inquire Comet is a beautiful lemon and white crossbreed foxhound born in 2008. Comet is a very special member of our pack, she has hunted her heart out for her huntsman and would follow him to the end of the earth if asked. This is why she has earned a cushy retirement. Comet is a very stoic hound who values her place at the top of the pack. She is quiet and knows right from wrong very well. She walks well on a leash and does well with other dogs (cats to be determined). Comet is a bit of reserved hound who would do better with a slower life style and no small children, however she is not snippy or aggressive with them. Comet deserves her retirement and is looking forward to a family of her own. *Comet does have a few fatty liopmas, they are purely cosmetic and have not grown any larger.
