Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (long coat). Hi, I'm Blanche! I'm a bundle of energy and will do best with an active family. I love to go running, so I would love a family that hikes or jogs. I get along well with dogs and cats, but can be mouthy when I get excited so older kids would be better. I love to chase after a ball, and any kind of hugs and kisses. I'm a fence climber so I would do best in a home where I am being walked on a leash or being monitored while outside in a fenced in yard. I'm a smart dog and learn very quickly. I will need a strong forever family committed to keeping me engaged and willing to work with me on some more training. I am already awesome with basic commands! Age: 4 years Weight: 54 lbs If you are interested in adopting me, please fill out an application on our website at http://www.lasthopek9.org/ Questions? Please email adoptions@lasthopek9.org. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Skylark

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Skylark LOVES people so much that she loves to follow you around the house, cuddle, and get lots of affection! She loves kids but if she lived with little kids she would probably get overwhelmed, so older kids are best. Skylark loves other dogs, once she is comfortable with them- but this can take some time. If she is not given direction she can be reactive to dogs on the leash, but she listens to corrections well and hasn't been reactive recently. Still, she should have slow intros to all dogs. When engaging in play, she tends to play rough and can be mouthy and jumpy, so she should only be allowed to be high energy around stable dogs. She has lived with many dogs from a little energetic puppy to a big old dog and was great with them both. She's fully house and crate trained, knows wait/stay, sit, come, leave it, place and touch! She is also great at walking on the leash, and being in a heel. She won't touch your shoes but she will chew up any toys or bones, and loves to play with anything you give her (especially study toys like a Kong or rope toy cause she will destroy stuffies.) She also loves to play catch! Although she loves walks and playing with you, she is also able to release her energy by herself in the yard- which is really nice on busy or lazy days where you don't have time to provide exercise. She can be a bit antsy after being in the crate, so she's let out into the yard right way in the morning and right when we get home from work. She is usually calm in the house, but if you just got home she may be ramped up because she is so excited to see you! After her run around that she is typically chill inside and will just want to be by your side and snuggle. If she does start getting amped up inside she usually just needs a reminder to be calm, by being put in the command "place". If she still is acting jittery inside she may be trying to let you know she has to go to the bathroom, or that she just wants to run around a bit more. If none of that is making her settle she is just acting out, and is too overstimulated- so she just needs some crate rest to decompress because she's overworking herself. She has great obedience- but she will push you over if you let her. She needs someone who will advocate for her and understand her issues with dogs. She has been great with all the dogs she's lived with but she was severely attacked as a puppy and can be fear aggressive- if she is pushed too fast and beyond what she can handle. She has recently come very far and trusts a lot easier, but she should still have slow intros. Since she has come so far with her dog issues, dog owners we pass on the street only know she was attacked because of her scars. She and is extremely loyal, devoted and will love you unconditionally. She is a such a sweet, goofy girl who will make an amazing companion. Although she needs a particular person who understands her needs, she is the best dog ever! Age: 3 years Weight: 65 lbs. Poppy

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Poppy is incredibly sweet and loyal to a fault. She unconditionally loves those in her "family" and will allow them to do almost anything to her (including ear cleaning and teeth brushing!) without moving a muscle. She takes time to warm up to new humans and needs to acclimate at her own pace by sniffing and nose nudging with no fear of grabby hands or quick, unpredictable movements. The best way to gain her trust is to ignore her and allow her to come to you. Once she realizes you aren't a threat (and are made of treats) she will be well on her way to becoming your new best friend. Poppy is extremely smart and full of energy. She loves running circles in the yard and is learning how to be a great leashed running companion. She has no problem entertaining herself when the situation calls for it and will spend hours playing with her squeaky animals or throwing a tennis ball for herself to fetch. When not on the move, Poppy is a world class cuddler. She believes closer is better and will sleep on any part of your body you make available to her. She would do best in a quiet suburban setting with a couple or family with teenagers and a yard. She thrives on structure and rules which help maintain a routine that leaves no room for fear of the unknown. Poppy will do best in a one dog family. She needs slow intros to other dogs and should be limited to very small group interactions. She does great at quiet dog parks and has a walking buddy whom she adores. Poppy will love her new family with all her heart and give them all that she has. She is looking for a fabulous couple or family to love her right back and always make sure the house is stocked with tennis balls. Age: 2 years Weight: 30 lbs. Breed: Labrador Retriever
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Molly absolutely loves her people and most dogs! She would love a quite home with a yard because Molly has extremely high anxiety whenever she is outside of her comfort zone, which is basically her foster's house, yard, and car. She can't even go for a walk without constantly looking around and barking when she's nervous. Despite her high anxiety level, she's wonderful with people and she is an awesome dog! She very happy lives with several dogs, and likes to play with them! She also tries to play with the pig! Molly is so happy when she's here and she such a goofball, but the minute she gets outside her comfort zone she is a totally different animal...she also is extremely fear reactive with dogs until she gets to know them and knows that she is safe, so does need slow introductions to new dogs. Molly may have her quirks, but she has the potential to be such an amazing family member, are you the one she's been waiting for?! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hi! I'm Beauty! Since I've spent a lot of time living outside, I am a little shy and nervous at first in new situations, but I am making rapid progress in my current foster home. Once I am comfortable, I am VERY loving and playful. I love to romp in the yard with my foster momma's other dogs, or just hang on the couch chewing on a bone or cuddling with my foster mom. I am still adjusting to those weird noises of the city and people, but I am slowly getting the hang of it! I would love a home with a family that can give me a few weeks to get comfortable and put some work in to building my confidence. She can be a little bit shy and skittish at times, but once she knows you well, she's all in! Lilac loves kids, but a lower-key home with older kids or no kids would be best for her. She would love to have a doggie sibling to play with, since she does much better when there are other pups around! She's housebroken, crate trained, knows all her commands and walks great on a leash. He knows sit, down, place, look, come, stand, out, leave it and heel. He loves to play tug and can play fetch for days. Winstonis an absolutely amazing dog but he will need a very special adopter.
