Posted Breed: Fox Terrier / Toy Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Take a chance on Chance! This fella came to us from a hoarding situation. He had mange but that's all better and now we're just waiting on his hair to grow back in all beautiful and lush. Chance is housebroken thanks to his foster working with him on this issue. Age is estimated at 5 to 6 years but he's very playful and full of energy. Everything is a game to Chance. He loves stuffed toys and balls. What breed is Chance? Good question! At only 12 lbs. we are thinking toy fox terrier, possibly a little Jack Russell terrier too. Chance is a little hesitant when he first meets someone new but it doesn't take him long to decide you're okay and makes friends. He has also made friends with the dogs, cats and the iguana in his foster home! Chance isn't crazy about kids though. Obviously he has never been around them before so he's a bit nervous with them. Best if he was in a child-free home or one with older kids who would give him lots of space and time. Chance is in foster care so if you are interested in adopting, please email us at adopt@colonycats.org. Or fill out an application online at: http://colonycats.org/adoption_app.html Chance is microchipped, neutered and up to date on vaccinations.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Scooby Doo

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Columbus, OH
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Scooby Doo is a very sweet boy who loves to sit on laps and snuggle. But he needs work on learning to trust people and not be so fearful of new people and things. He's been in several homes who never worked on behavior training so his new home will need to have the time and commitment to work with Scooby Doo to be the best dog he can be. He definitely has it in him. He's a smart boy. Scooby Doo is 2 to 3 years of age. Good with other dogs and cats. Housebroken and crate trained. We recommend he not be adopted into a home with young children. He's heartworm tested negative, neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. Email us at adopt@colonycats.org if you have any questions or go to this link and fill out an adoption application if interested in adopting Scooby Doo: http://colonycats.org/adoption_app.html

      Connor

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Columbus, OH
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Connor came to us from the local dog shelter. He is a 9# chihuahua who is full of energy. He is 2-3 years old and does well with other dogs. He will chase & bark at cats but is learning to co-existent with them in his foster home. He is house and crate trained. Not recommended to households with young children. Connor is a barker so we recommend he not go to an apartment or condo as your neighbors wouldn't appreciate his barking. He also screams with joy when his foster mom comes home!! He is very active and would love a fenced in yard or a family that loves to walk. Activity helps his surgically repaired luxating hip. He would also love another small playful dog in his home. If you'd like to meet Connor, email us at adopt@colonycats.org or fill out our online adoption application at this link: http://www.colonycats.org/adoption_app.html. Connor is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. KE

      rescue
      Breed: Shiba Inu-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Columbus, OH
Posted Breed: Shiba Inu / Mixed (short coat). Big Ben was not doing well at the local shelter and was not a candidate for the adoption floor. Once out of the shelter he is a nice little dog. He likes to play with other dogs but will sometimes guard his toys and good bowl. He is well mannered, knows some commands, is good with cats. He needs someone that will set boundaries and not let him get away with things he shouldn't. He knows how to be a good boy but will test the rules if given a chance. MMM
