Posted Breed: Fox Terrier / Toy Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Take a chance on Chance! This fella came to us from a hoarding situation. He had mange but that's all better and now we're just waiting on his hair to grow back in all beautiful and lush. Chance is housebroken thanks to his foster working with him on this issue. Age is estimated at 5 to 6 years but he's very playful and full of energy. Everything is a game to Chance. He loves stuffed toys and balls. What breed is Chance? Good question! At only 12 lbs. we are thinking toy fox terrier, possibly a little Jack Russell terrier too. Chance is a little hesitant when he first meets someone new but it doesn't take him long to decide you're okay and makes friends. He has also made friends with the dogs, cats and the iguana in his foster home! Chance isn't crazy about kids though. Obviously he has never been around them before so he's a bit nervous with them. Best if he was in a child-free home or one with older kids who would give him lots of space and time. Chance is in foster care so if you are interested in adopting, please email us at adopt@colonycats.org. Or fill out an application online at: http://colonycats.org/adoption_app.html Chance is microchipped, neutered and up to date on vaccinations.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Columbus, OH
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (short coat). His best qualities are his looks, his ability to snuggle you no matter how small of a spot, and he can be active when he wants to be. He loves tennis balls and running around the yard. In his foster home they have 2 other dogs, a boy and a girl who he enjoys playing and snuggling with. He also loves to eat! You wouldn’t think due to his small size, but feeding time is one of his favorite times of the day. He will try and eat the other dogs meals if they leave it unattended or if they leave any leftovers. He prefers when someone is home and wants to be by your side. Sparky gets nervous when you leave. He does not like to be crated but will if necessary. Sparky would do best in a home with someone at home most of the time as he loves his humans. Overall, he is a good dog. He has never had an issue with getting along with another dog, just the normal small dog complex! He loves love and when his little nub of a tail starts wagging it’ll melt your heart. Sparky is a 6 year old Jack Russell mix. If you'd like to meet Sparky, email us at adopt@colonycats.org as he's in foster care. He's neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. BH
