Posted Breed: Appenzell Mountain Dog / Retriever / Mixed (long coat). zzMaverick is a ten year old that is still very healthy and active. He is current on all his vaccinations, micro-chipped, and house trained. He knows the basic commands (sit, come, quiet). He is also very loving and super gentle with children. He is a medium sized blonde mixed breed (possibly appenzell mountain dog and some kind of retriever or shepherd) approximately 40 pounds. He has lived his entire life with an older dog, but may need to be re-acquainted with other dogs. Because of his innate hunting trait, he probably shouldn't live with cats or other animals. Disclaimer: This dog is a participant in the Paws in the City Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by the foster, not by Paws in the City. A $75 adoption fee is due at the time of adoption and will go to the foster. To meet this dog, please fill out an adoption application at the Paws in the City website http://pawsinthecity.org/adopt.htm.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Hi! I'm zzWinslow (Winny), and I am a young pup. I was found in pretty rough shape, but I am doing great now and ready for my own home. My foster mom describes me as very affectionate, good natured, lazy, smart, charming, silly, clumsy, cuddly, sweet, and very loyal. I just want to sit next to you and get all the loves. I love to be outside and go on long walks. I am house trained. Since my mom rescued me, I have never had an accident inside. What I really need is a furever home. I love all the attention and would really love a family where I can cuddle and take long walks. My favorite time is when it is just me and my mom. If you want a calm and loving dog then I’m the pup for you. I will love on you every day I can. More about Winny: • Medium-length coat, brown- dark and light • About 45 pounds • Gets along with dogs- not cat tested yet but we can if needed. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Hi, my name is Jade! I'm a German Shepherd mix about 18 months old. I'm a really sweet girl, and I love, love, love belly rubs! I'm house trained, crate trained and I like other dogs but I'm not crazy about cats. I know how to sit and I'm beginning to understand the command "off" a lot more since my foster mom has been working with me (I'm just so happy when I see her). I'm also a little shy with people and would need a little extra time adjusting. She is also teaching me lie down, shake and stay (I get so excited about my treats it's so hard to concentrate) but my foster mom is working really hard with me. Oh, and speaking about treats, OH MY GOODNESS my foster mom makes these great peanut butter treats and said she would send the recipe with me! I love peanut butter! I like to take walks and I'm learning to walk beside you instead of leading, I'm getting better every day. I'm so, so, so excited that I will be finding my forever home soon. Come see me, I'll be looking for you! Breed: Chow Chow-Labrador Retriever Mix

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chow Chow / Mixed. Hi! I'm Kermit the dog. Get it? Like Kermit the frog but a dog... Anyways, some info about me, I'm a large boy at 70 lbs and am in the prime of my life at just 5 years old. It's up for debate but I think I'm a mixed breed of Leonberger, Chow Chow, and Retreiver, but the short way to say it is, I'm a mutt. And that's just fine with me! I'm a handsome guy, so much so that people stop in their tracks to tell me what a good looking dog I am. But forget looks, I have a cool personality too! I am a happy-go-lucky guy who loves to be loved. I'm a total goofball as well so you'll get to laugh with me all day long! I love my people. I'm the perfect protector and will always be loyal to you. Speaking of things I love, one of my favorite things is to be pet. Endless petting would be my dream come true. Belly rubs are the best though! I have a soft and shiny brown coat so you won't mind petting me one bit. If it's time to watch TV, I can happily settle down on my dog bed and relax with you. But when that's over, I'd like to play in the backyard. I can do a lap around the backyard in record time because I have such a large stride. Squirrels beware :) A few laps later and I've had my workout for the day (approx 20 mins is ideal). Being such a big guy, it doesn't take much to wear me out but it's important for me to be active daily. I'm good on walks as well as riding in a car. Oh and I'm a perfect gentleman at the vet/bathing/groomer. I'm a lucky guy. I know that for a few reasons; First I was rescued by Paws In The City. Then they diagnosed me as being Heartworm positive and got me the treatment I needed to get well again. Next, they invested in me and got me the training I needed to get me on track to being my best self. I have some of my best years left to live. I've been given another chance at life so now I am looking for the right person/people to be my forever. My perfect person/people would live in a house with a big fenced-in backyard. They would be active and would want to spend lots of time with me. They wouldn't have a kitty cat as I think they are fun to chase (sorry, not sorry). They wouldn't have young kiddos since I'm such a big goofy guy, I'd very likely knock them over by accident--I'm a klutz what can I say?! Also, I'd really like another doggie sibling although I tend to be a bit picky. I mean who really likes everybody, right?? I think being selective is a good thing... I can't really narrow it down to a type of dog I like or don't like so much as I like to be the alpha. I'm a bit stubborn, it's the nature of my breeds. But boy am I lovable and sweet. My forever home would be patient with me and would continue to work with me on my training. We could have the best time together for forever! I'd love to meet you! Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). zzMama was found on the streets. We called her zzMama, it was obvious had babies at a young age. We don't know what happened to her babies. zzMama is the "most" loving, easy-going, extremely smart (learned how to sit, shake and down in a few minutes), she loves to please, she loves children, any size dog (unless the other dog is aggressive she will protect "her" pack), extremely loyal, low-energy and loves to socialize!!! She is the most popular dog in our neighborhood. Everyone know her by name and sits by the gateway (we live on a beltway with a river, walkway with and open fence) waiting for her friends to come by everyday. Children, puts their hands through the fence to pet her, dogs come by to play...etc. and they all know her by her name. She is healthy about 2 years old, she is potty trained (unless you don't let her out), great with strangers, but will bark at any lawn equipment. zzMama needs an outdoor space to be happy, loves to be social with people and dogs, dry food with canned mixed is her fav (we spoiled her a bit). GREAT family dog with CHILDREN! She is a social dog, so, being isolated alone for 8 hours will not be good for her. She is loving and if you get her you will be the luckiest family!!!! Although a sometimes alpha female, she is fantastic with male dogs and lived with her sister although they did fuss occasionally. (Don't all sisters?) zzRuby has a beautiful coat, a very playful and loving disposition, understands basic commands, and is great on a leash. Ruby is also spayed and microchipped. After being left behind when her family moved we promised to find her a loving and permanent home.
