A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Begley

      Breed: Greyhound-Ibizan Hound Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Denton, TX
Posted Breed: Ibizan Hound / Greyhound / Mixed (short coat). Begley. A 3 year old male great dane/ greyhound/ donkey mix. He's a quirky, 70 pound lap dog and goofball. Begley came to DFW Rescue Me terrified of people and new surroundings, as he had spent most of his first year of life in a kennel with very little socialization or exposure to anything. Since then, Begs has grown into a very active, playful, eager to please, entertaining dog. He still has his moments where new people or things can spook him, but he has made amazing progress. He is crate trained, house trained, and gets along well with other dogs. Begley is a natural athlete and could be molded into a great running partner. He would do best in a home with older kids and at least one other dog to play with - particularly a confident dog to lead the way! He knows basic commands like sit and has great recall. While Begs loves to play, he is also very happy to lounge at your feet or even (attempt) to sit in your lap. He is still a bit on the shy side and may take a little time to warm up, but when he does, he is one of the coolest dogs around! The adoption fee for all of our dogs is $250.00 and that includes their vaccinations, spay or neuter, rabies and microchip. To start the process please visit our website and fill out the adoption application (www.dfwrescueme.org) and from there the foster family can answer any questions and arrange a time to meet.

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Boston Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Bailey has been waiting for her forever home patiently, but it's time now that this sweet girl to find a permanent, loving home! In July 2010, Bailey was rescued from a desolate back road outside Seagoville. She was dumped with her pregnant mom, Sadie, in the middle of nowhere without food, water, or shelter of any kind. Bailey is approx 5 yrs old, a petite pittie / Boston terrier mix female. She has high energy, plays fetch, loves squeak toys, and loves to snuggle. She is very sweet, and is a ball of endless energy. Bailey gives high fives with her right paw, and shakes with her left paw. She gets long with other dogs, and cats, though she's not fond of other dogs eating from her food bowl! She is heartworm negative, spayed, up to date on shots, microchipped, on heartworm preventative, and weighs almost 50 lbs. She needs a yard with at least a 6 ft. fence, because she's proven that she's athletic enough to climb out of a shorter one! (Her pics were updated in Apr 2015!) If you feel your home may be the right place for this sweet and affectionate little girl, the place to start is with the adoption application found at www.dfwrescueme.org/adopt. Her foster will get back to you promptly! "Bailey is a participant in the DFW Rescue Me Guest Dog Program, so her ongoing care and custody are provided by her foster, not by DFW Rescue Me."

Breed: Boston Terrier-Jack Russell Terrier Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Denton, TX
Posted Breed: Boston Terrier / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Little Bit was born 11 February, 2014, the son of a Jack Russell (Mom) and a Boston Terrier (Dad). Both were very loving animals. Lil’ Bit is very playful. He loves with his mom (the Jack Russell), and playing chase with her. He also enjoys playing with his foster’s grandkids, ages 3 and 8. He learned to "sit" and be still for a treat. Before being taught to sit for his treat, he would literally steal a treat out of his mother’s mouth. But he’s now learned to sit very still, let his Mom eat her treat… and wait to be given his. Despite his enthusiasm for food and treats, he’s never attempted or threatened to bite. I feed the dogs and he is not aggressive around his food. Little Bit DOES always wants to be the center of attention. He has medium to big paws and does not realize he is not the same little pup that would fit into your palm two+ years ago. He's a smart boy who quickly learned the rules of where to potty, and loves being with another dog to play. Follows his foster around the house and plops down by her feel whenever she sits. He loves to play with his toys, or his foster’s grandkids toys. As a puppy he chewed things but has learned to confine his chewing to "chew toys"! Little Bit lives with a small, older female Chihuahua, but she likes no one and no other dogs. When he tries to play with her and she bites his nose (she only has a couple of teeth left), he'll look at her as if she's just a confusing playmate. He is so curious when out on walks. If you feel your home might be the right place for this wonderful dog, the place to start is with the adoption application found at www.dfwrescueme.org/adopt. Once submitted, the foster will contact you to tell you more, and to arrange a meeting! Spica was named after the brightest star in the constellation Virgo, and she lives up to her name with her luminous personality! She adores people! Big people, little people, all people! She will go with you anywhere, by foot or by wheels, or lay beside you for eternity. She would very much enjoy being the only doggie you love, so she can have all the hugs and rubs, but she loves some dogs (such as her little 12 pound running / sleeping / playing buddy! So having the right four legged friend could be great as well! Spica is now seven and a half years old (Nov 2014), weighs close to 50 pounds, thinks a good rawhide is a great chew, and is what we call an "easy keeper". She doesn't mind being alone if you go to work (gives her more time to save up kisses) nor if you bring the whole office over for a party after! She'll fit right in! Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Female, Boxer mix, white with brown spots, short-haired, neutered, micro-chipped, potty-trained, 3.5 years old, ~40 pounds Hello, my name is Sylvia. I am an outgoing, affectionate 3.5 year old boxer mix that wants to find my forever home. I am a sweet girl that enjoys playing and running as well as lounging and being a snuggle-bug. I will always happily accept belly rubs (my favorite!), walks, and treat toys. I was originally adopted when I was less than a year old; however, I got separated and have not been able to be reunited as the contact information had a disconnected number. I am currently a guest with a family that found me on August 2nd (that's in Tarrant County, Fort Worth 76107) and temporally took me in. They would keep me, but they already have a full house. It would be great if I could be your one and only four-legged child. One look in my eyes will tell you that I will love you forever. I REALLY want to be the only pet in the home. Thanks for considering adopting me, Sylvia So if you’re interested in adding a sweet, affectionate young girl like Sylvia to your family, (one who can even right her own bio!!) please start at www.dfwrescueme.org/adopt to complete and submit the adoption application found there. Her foster will contact you promptly to tell you more about her, and to arrange a meeting for you! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Dozer can sit, play fetch, and he gets what we like to call the "zoomies" when he gets super excited. He loves to play tug of war, and he can play for hours if you let him. He DOES NOT like to be left alone for long periods of time. He needs to have a fence 10 ft, or taller. He is a jumper and a runner. He loves going for walks, and is gonna need more leash training. He doesn't like other dogs or cats and would probably do best in a home with kids 12+. He is scared of fireworks and thunder. He likes the water but doesn't enjoy baths. He likes to get snuggles and kisses before bed and his favorite spot to sleep is at your feet. He really is a good dog that will bring you a lot of happiness. He just needs to go to the right home. He LOVES cheese. He loves toys too, but the rope toys he'll eat. He likes to tear apart the plush doggy toys and burry the squeaker. He used to burry all his squeaks in my couch, so when you would sit down my couch would squeak. He has so much love to give. He had parvo as a baby, but is doing great now. He is a good boy and he needs loving patient people around him. Please consider adding Dozer to your family! Dozer is a participant in the DFWRM Guest Dog Program, so his ongoing care and custody are provided by his foster, not by DFWRM.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Sweet Libby was found by her foster frightened in the alley behind their home. She was initially surrendered to a local shelter in hopes her family would find her, but when they never came, her foster pulled her to insure she didn't lose her life to an overcrowded municipal shelter. She's in a home with 5 other dogs, and sadly, one of them doesn't seem to like Libby at all! But the dislike wasn't mutual, Libby seems to like other dogs. Shortly after she was pulled from the shelter, she developed what the vet suspected was 'kennel cough' which is being treated with simple antibiotics. Libby is now up to date with all vaccinations, spayed, and even microchipped. She's a 'plug and play' kind of dog! Libby's very loving - though shows evidence of not being 100% trusting yet. If surprised by a person, she tends to cower. She's great with kids (what lab isn't?) and dogs (except her fosters!) but hasn't been exposed to cats yet. Libby loves toys, likes to play fetch, and is thrilled to be with 'her people'. If you feel your home might be the right place for this wonderful girl, the place to start is with the adoption application found at www.dfwrescueme.org/adopt. Once submitted, the foster will contact you to tell you more, and to arrange a meeting! Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Zeus is about 8 years young. Don’t let his age fool you, he’s playful and full of energy. He is fully housetrained and knows several commands, such as sit, stay, speak, shake, off, lay down, back, and out. He loves to play tug of war, to chase and retrieve balls and more, and would do really well in a family with older children to help him expend that energy! Zeus can get very excited when someone first enters the home, and will sometime jump up on them, but he calms down after a few minutes. Because he’s a bit excitable, and is a big, strong boy, he can be a bit overwhelming to little children or toddlers! But make no mistake, this guy is a loving, gentle hearted family dog – who wants nothing more than to make “his people” happy! If you feel your home is ready for a fun, loving dog, Zeus just might be the perfect fit. Please visit www.dfwrescueme.org/adopt to complete an adoption application.
