Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Billy is an 18-month-old pup in search of a new place to hang his leash — got room at your house? :-) This 45-lb. pup has absolutely charmed his foster mom; here's what she told us about him: "Billy is as smart as he is friendly — he's housetrained and sleeps quietly in his crate overnight. He'd love to have a canine 'sibling' to romp around with, and some human 'siblings' would be even better. He would do great with older kids. The family who adopts this sweet guy will definitely be a lucky one!" He is higher energy so an active family would e best. Billy recently hitched a ride north to join the Almost Home family, but it turned out that the older (and much smaller) dogs in his foster home weren't too happy about having a bouncy teenager around ... so we'd like to find him a new foster home — or better yet, a real home! He also may be available on a "foster-to-adopt" basis, so if Billy sounds like the right boy for you, please stop by an upcoming Meet & Greet or e-mail us for more information! (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.) PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US! We are NOT a shelter: All of our dogs live in private homes with foster families. Come and meet the Almost Home dogs and their fosters at our Meet & Greet events, where you can learn more about our wonderful dogs from the people who live with them, find out which dogs are on their way and when they’ll arrive, and fill out an application to adopt or foster. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Doylestown, PA
Posted Breed: Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Sadie is amazing! She is very playful and loves to run. Fetch is her favorite game and she especially loves playing outside with soccer balls. She plays with every single toy she owns and likes to put the toys she isn't playing with in a pile. Sadie also does very well in the car. She loves sitting shot-gun or looking out the backseat window. Sadie knows how to sit and lay down on command and takes treats very gently. Sadie loves people! She may take a few moments to warm up to a new person, but once she does, you get showered with affection and sometimes even a hug! Sadie is house trained, crate trained, and continues to get better walking on a leash each day. Once Sadie gets her energy out, she will curl up and cuddle all night long. Sadie is good with dogs and would love a play-mate (not sure about cats). Sadie is 9-10 months old and weighs about 45 lbs., and her shelter friends told us she's playful and loving. She would love to be part of an active family. Want to learn more? Please stop by an upcoming Meet & Greet to find out if Sadie is the right girl for you! Posted Breed: Hound / Beagle / Mixed (medium coat). FUN, FUN, FUN!! That's what this pint-sized pup just loves! Eight-month-old Meah is an active, friendly, fun-loving pup who would fit right into an active family. Her ideal home would have a fenced yard, as she loves to run, and we think she'd make a super agility dog! She also loves playing with her toys and wrestling with her canine pals, too. Weighing in at just 23 lbs., she'll grow up to be a nice medium-sized girl. Meah is doing well with leash training and housetraining, and we know she'll be a great addition to some lucky family ... how about yours? Want to learn more? Please stop by an upcoming Meet & Greet to find out if Meah is the right pup for you! (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.) NOTE: Most puppies do best in the company of an older dog who can teach them "doggy manners," so homes with at least one other dog usually will be given preference in puppy adoptions. Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Doylestown, PA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). NOTE: Magoo is not with Almost Home — this is a courtesy post only. Please see below for more information. Magoo is in need of a new home due to the arrival of a new baby in the family and his family's long work hours. This 9.5-year-old pit bull-mix boy is a sweetheart who gets along wonderfully with adults, children and other dogs — in fact, he LOVES to play with other dogs. He has lived with cats as well, but does best with cats with "cattitude," as he leaves them alone and is less curious. He's occasionally caught squirrels and birds, but then immediately got scared and let them go :-) Magoo has never hurt anything or anyone — he just loves to play like a puppy! Although he's afraid of very loud noises — e.g., thunderstorms, fireworks, demolition — he'll completely relax as long as he can be by your side. Things aren't so scary with a good friend nearby! Sadly, a 9-year-old pup isn't usually what people are looking for, but Magoo is SUCH a sweetheart ... and we'd love to see him with a family or a single person who has the time to love and care for him. He has been well taken care of, has complete vet records, and goes to the groomer on a regular basis (so he's always clean and shiny! :-) He is fine being loose in the house, but cannot be crated or shut in a room as confinement makes him anxious and scared. He is taking very inexpensive medication (a steroid, about $5–$10 per month) every three days for masculatory muscle myositis, weighs about 60-65 lbs., and overall is in excellent health. Want to learn more? Please stop by an upcoming Meet & Greet to find out if Magoo is the right one for you! Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Doylestown, PA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Cindy's foster family is moving and she is in need of a new foster home. Can you help? She is also available through our foster to adopt program. "Pick me! Pick me!" Cindy is all eager smiles, tail wags and wiggly-jiggly dance moves when she sees folks coming her way along the kennel run. She tries so very hard to make sure you notice her — this super-friendly pup doesn't want to be lost in the crowd! And frankly, not only does this 9 year old charmer NOT get lost in the crowd, she's sure to stand out! Sporting a lovely deep brindle jacket and a broad, warm smile, sweet Cindy is a bubbly, engaging lady ready to steal your heart. She's always eager to climb into your lap or show off her oh-so-pettable belly as she rolls with delight in the grass. Here's what her temporary foster mom down south told us about her: "Cindy is absolutely loving with every human she's met. She's a little TOO interested in cats, however, so a cat-free home would be best for Cindy." Cindy's foster mom told us she's doing wonderfully there, too: "Cindy loves, loves, loves to be around people! She is a gentle, sweet girl who walks very nicely on the leash. Her idea of heaven would be a home where someone is around the house most of the day, as she's not fond of being crated or otherwise contained ... and she loves having 'people company' more than anything. She's an eager-to-please girl who is great with kids, housetrained, laid-back and mellow." Cindy is dog-selective. She's fine with the foster's other dog but has issues with some others so she would do best as an only dog. Want to learn more? Please e-mail us or stop by an upcoming Meet & Greet to find out if Cindy is the right canine for you! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Tortie's foster mom just adores her ... as you can tell from the way she writes about her :-) "This pup has personality plus! She gets along great with my male and female dogs, but her ideal companion would be a mellow guy who doesn't mind a little sister who steals his toys. Tortie rings the bells on the door when she has to go out, and she just loves to be in the yard (she's a great gardening buddy!), so a home with a physical fence would be ideal for her." "Best of all, Tortie is SO smart! She is very treat-motivated and quickly learns anything you want to teach her; she would love a family who will take her to classes to learn even more. She is crate-trained, but rarely needs to be in her crate anymore because she's so well-behaved. I have to admit, this is one foster dog that I would keep if I could — she's just that wonderful!" Now 5 years old and weighing in at 56 lbs., this happy, playful girl is spayed, microchipped and eager to meet her new family — could it be yours? Location: Doylestown, PA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Thelma is a smart, active, energetic girl who’s about 4-5 years old and tips the scales at about 52 lbs. ... and she's looking for her “special someone!” Here's what Thelma’s foster mom told us about her: "Thelma is very food-motivated, so training classes with her have been a real joy — in fact, she recently graduated from Lisa Berkenstock's Pet Dog Manners class in Horsham. There was just one catch: For weeks, I tried to teach her the ‘Down’ cue, and nothing seemed to be working ... until we discovered the magic of CheezIts! Then she learned ‘Down’ in about 10 minutes using them as her reward! :-D She’s completely housetrained and crate-trained, too." "Thelma likes to stick close to her ‘person’; she sleeps in bed with me and follows me around the house. If given the chance, she will try to squeeze through the front door ahead of you, so it’s best to be cautious when coming or going. She also has a rather unusual hobby: She likes to watch other cats and dogs on television and in YouTube videos! (Check out the photo of Thelma gazing raptly at kitty videos :-) It all started with the Westminster Dog Show, when she was captivated by all of the dogs prancing around the show ring. It’s amazing — she will sit and watch for more than 30 minutes and still expect to see more!" Thelma likes to take her time getting to know people, and is sometimes easily startled, so her ideal owner will be someone who’s quiet and patient, and will give her the time and space she needs to feel comfortable. She would do best in a home that has a fenced yard for exercise, and we think she'd be happiest as an only dog. No cats for Thelma, either — those fast-moving fluffy things are just too, too tempting! — and fast-moving little kids are a bit much for her as well. Her ideal home would be with a quiet, single woman or a couple; older, dog-savvy kids may okay, too. But whomever her special someone turns out to be, we know Thelma will be a great companion ... maybe your companion? Want to learn more? Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Maple is looking for a new foster or permanent home Can you help? Maple is a friendly 1-year-old girl who's just as sweet as the syrup for which she's named! Weighing in at around 45 lbs., she's a perfectly medium-sized pup who gets along well with other dogs, Here's what her temporary foster mom told us about Maple: "Maple just adores getting attention — she's such a snuggler! She's crate-trained and housebroken and always comes when she's called, and sits politely for treats. She loves joining us for car rides, and will even join us in the shower if we're not careful! :-D She's going to be a wonderful companion for some lucky family!" Maple is looking for an active family with a fenced yard to play in and a family that has time to continue her manners training. Maple just made the long trip north in search of her new family, so please e-mail us or stop by an upcoming Meet & Greet to find out if Maple is the right little miss for you! (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.) PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US! Texas Walker...

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). COUIRTESY POST: Texas Walker is not with Almost Home; for more information, please email adoptions@dogtown309.com Little Texas Walker, more affectionately known as "T" to many, has far too long a story, and has been waiting patiently for his forever home. Typical of his breed (Chihuahua), "T" takes a bit more time to warm up to new people than some others. During his first week at Dog Town, our staff quickly learned that he needed to approach us, rather than us approaching him. We took the "ignore" approach, and let him come around in his own time. Sure enough, just days later, we felt two little paws scratch at our legs for pets. Just like that, we had a little buddy. T Walker's fear of new people manifests itself in some less than ideal ways for a "meet and greet." Most people want to instantly reach in and pet the adorable dog, but he needs more space than that. He's looking for that one special adopter who will respect his needs, and in return, he will be a wonderful, loyal companion. After a few months of no luck at the adoption center, a wonderful foster stepped forward for T. We decided to find out just how he can do in a home environment, and he has certainly exceeded expectations! "T" is his foster mom's, little shadow! He's most content by her side, and loves sleeping quietly in his bed while she works from home. He is housetrained, crate-trained, and has been attending obedience school where he's a star pupil. He knows MANY basic commands and tricks, and will show them off with just a small piece of chicken or a yummy training treat. Because of T Walker's need for time and space, his ideal home would be one without children. He does seem to prefer women to men, but could warm up to either as long as he's given the time. T prefers less pushy dogs who aren't too "in-your-face" or overly playful. He does have a few favorite friends he loves to zip around the yard with, so he could live with another very low-key dog. His perfect home would be a low-traffic environment, with someone who is willing to continue his training and socialization. With just some time and love, you're looking at having a friend for life. What more could you ask for? For more information, or to meet T Walker and those big soulful eyes, please email adoptions@dogtown309.com! PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US!
