We encourage those applicants who apply outside of the area to check your local shelters and rescue programs. We are always happy to refer you to a program in your area. Kallie is a purebred chocolate lab who has just come into foster care with TAGS. She is a little timid and nervous when she first meets you, but warms up quickly. She loves to run and play fetch with a ball, and would do so for hours at a time. More info will be forthcoming once she settles in her new foster home.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Sammy is a beautiful, handsome boy. He weights 26 kgs and is medium height. He gets along well with most dogs of all sizes, but doesn't like high energy, in your face type ones. He would be best suited to a home where children are 12 years or older. He is quiet and shy when you first meet him, but quickly warms up.

Pick any of Bruce Wayne’s poses and each is a gem, showing off his lush black beauty to paw-fection. Having entered our care due to a change in his family’s circumstances, he LOVES everyone he meets, eagerly making them his new best friends. Very sweet and oh-so-cuddly, when he’s not snuggling, he’s either joyously running loose in the fenced backyard or playing fetch, where he excels at catching! He rides well in the car, gets along with older respectful children (he does not like having his collar pulled), yet he’s fearful of both dogs and cats, preferring his own company to theirs. Cheerfully vocal, he’s fully house but not crate trained, and is left free on his own during the day. Now ready for the next chapter in his life, he’s hoping to find new people to love.

This birthday boy is going to make a great best friend. Lou loves to be with his people. He is amazing on the leash and would make a great walking or running partner. Lou knows sit, lay down and shake a paw. He goes into his crate very easily and sometimes hangs out in there with the door open. Lou's a tall guy and a real goofball. He likes to play fetch, chew sticks in the yard and flop to the floor for belly rubs. Lou's a quick learner and is food motivated. He's looking for an active individual or family with older children to be his furever home.

Named because of her colour (yes its a her) Bissy for short, is just as her name implies, an absolute treat. She is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and some type of Hound. She has a very distinct Spaniel face, and the Hound droopy velvety ears. Spaniels are known for their companionship, and Bissy is no exception. She becomes attached very quickly to her owner but she has absolutely no problem playing with newcomers. Biscotti thrives on companionship and would be best suited to a home with another dog or a home where someone will be home with her most of the day. She requires a high level of exercise and stimulation.

We encourage those applicants who apply outside of the area to check your local shelters and rescue programs. We are always happy to refer you to a program in your area. Pepper is a hound cross who is looking for some love. We believe there may be some greyhound in her. She is a fun loving girl who is very affectionate towards people. We originally came to find Pepper when she was tied to a park bench in February and left overnight at just 8 months old. She was put through the TAGS program we managed to find her a great family home. That is where most TAGS's stories end, but unfortunately, Pepper's TAGS' story continued. A few years ago while playing in her backyard, Pepper had a run in with a Coyote. Although the Coyote never actually got to her, Pepper was chased through the screen door into the arms of her family. Unfortunately, since then, the poor girl is a bit wary of some dogs (but not all - her best friend is TAGS dog Bart). Pepper puts on an act that is big and tough in order to keep other dogs away. Because of her fear (and her display of how bad to the bone she can be) Pepper was brought back into the program. Because of her past, Pepper is a people person. She loves to meet and play with new people, however, when other dogs are brought in the mix, she puts on her show and scares the other dogs (and people who don't know her) away. With some love, patience, and training, Pepper would make an extremely loving companion.

Meet Chara, the epitome of a graceful, regal and loyal purebred German Shepherd. This gorgeous girl will make you laugh with her silly antics, keep you warm with her loving snuggles, and help you feel safe when you’re alone. In keeping with the German Shepherd breed’s character; Chara trusts her handlers and the visitors she’s familiar with, but is very apprehensive about strangers. Chara is good with other animals but it’s best to monitor her interaction with them in a stressful situation, as with most dogs. Chara needs an experienced guardian who can help this anxious dog overcome her fear of strangers and new experiences. Chara is eagerly awaiting placement in a loving, quiet and experienced adult home (permanent or foster), one where someone is home much of the time to provide the lovable Chara with the exercise and structure that she needs as well as the closeness she craves.

True to her name, this gorgeous gal is the colour of golden brandy. At 69 pounds, she’s the kind of doggy darling you can wrap both arms around! Happily active and energetic, Brandy thrives on three walks a day paired with lengthy lopes round her family’s fenced yard. Obedience trained, this bright beauty knows sit, stay, wait, come, gentle and down, and enjoys car rides once she’s settled. Because she’s both house and crate trained, she has free rein of the house during the day, and either sleeps on the floor of the master bedroom or inside her opened crate at night. Being surrendered to us because of her family’s move to a residence where pets aren’t allowed, Brandy will do best in a home without children or other dogs, but with loving people to pamper and pet her forever.

We encourage those applicants who apply outside of the area to check your local shelters and rescue programs. We are always happy to refer you to a program in your area. This is the look of pure happy! Stretched out comfortably on the grass, smiling widely, bold, black and beautiful Chaco has his soft, golden eyes on you. Saved from a high-kill shelter, he has been breathing the fresh air of freedom, and whether it’s dashing through the snow or sprinting across the yard, he is energy paws-onified. Despite his size, Chaco, who thinks of himself as a lap dog, is extremely affectionate, loving and loyal, gives long, slurpy kisses, and loves cuddling with his foster mom. He gets along with most dogs, walks well on leash with the help of a Gentle Leader, and is good in the car. Crate trained, but never fully obedience trained, what Chaco needs now is a home without other pets, where adopters experienced with “alpha” dogs will patiently work to provide him with all that he’s missed. Their reward: one deserving dog’s fur-ever loving and loyalty. Not to mention those sweet Chaco kisses!

We encourage those applicants who apply outside of the area to check your local shelters and rescue programs. We are always happy to refer you to a program in your area. This creamy coated little lady with the large, dark eyes is new to the world of safety and loving. A former puppy mill dog, the shy and sensitive senior is very friendly with people, greeting them happily, while still keeping them at paw's length. Only secure inside her foster home, Libby is easily frightened by sudden movements and sounds, barks when alone, and because she's fearful of leaving the house is slightly overweight due to a lack of exercise. Not quite into playing just yet, she will, however, chew on shoes if she's bored, and her sole source of solace is her canine companion, who sleeps near her all through the night. Because Libby missed out on much of her life and the lessons she should have learned, what this doggy dearest needs now is the gentle guidance of a tender and patient adopter, who's home most of the time, with another gentle dog for added guidance and comfort.
