A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Ellie

      rescue
      Breed: Great Pyrenees
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Flora, IL
Posted Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Ellie was surrendered to the shelter for killing some chickens. She is a sweet and friendly dog. Ellie is a beautiful purebred AKC registered Great Pyrenees that would rather be a family dog, we think, than a livestock guardian. That said, please research the breed. Great Pyrenees are not for everyone. I highly recommend a fenced yard if Ellie is to be turned outside off leash and you live in town. Ellie needs/enjoys a long daily walk/romp. We walk her off leash on our property. She ranges, but is good about coming back when called. Ellie strikes me as a dog that needs some space. Great Pyrenees like to ramble. If you don't take them for a walk daily, they are inclined to take themselves for a walk. Ellie is very affectionate. She loves to lean up against you and get petted. She is also fond of my daughter. She appears to have been well socialized as a puppy, because she interacts well with people, especially women and kids from what I've seen of her. Now for the things easy to overlook in a beautiful dog, but very important to consider up front. Great Pyrenees hear things in the dark and bark at them. It's in their nature, I would say. The bark is deep and resonant. Ellie doesn't bark pointlessly or endlessly, but if you live in town, I think it is well worth considering how this will play with your neighbors. There is a great description on www.dogtime.com/dog-breeds/great-pyrenees If you are interested in Ellie or a Great Pyrenees please copy/paste this link into your browser and read it. It seems very accurate to me. Ellie chewed her way out of her 10x10 kennel almost daily at the shelter, because she didn't like it there and she wasn't getting enough exercise. There is little doubt in my mind that she would not tolerate being crated for long periods of time, such as during a normal work day. Ellie is going to take time and commitment or she will just be destructive if caged up too much or in too small of an enclosure. We are trying very hard to place her in what will be her forever home and share as much information with potential adopters ahead of time. Ellie is a very special dog. The Clay County Animal Shelter is located at 14400 Hwy. 45 in Louisville, IL. Our phone number is 618-665-3005. The shelter is open to the public 1-3 M-F. Sundays we are open 1-4 to the public. Posted Breed: Husky / Mixed (medium coat). Sage is a handsome blue-eyed Husky mix. He was picked up as a stray along the highway with another Siberian Husky. When no owners claimed the pair we took Sage to the vet. We discovered Sage is heartworm positive, unfortunately, but he is an excellent candidate for heartworm treatment. We can contribute toward his heartworm treatment and have estimates we can share with potential adopters. Sage could be through his heartworm treatment quickly and should be good to go after that. Sage is playful and has a lot of energy to burn. The Clay County Animal Shelter is located at 14400 Hwy. 45 in Louisville, IL. Our phone number is 618-665-3005. Breed: Mutt

      Location: Flora, IL
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Dexter came to us as a stray. He is a happy guy who even smiles when you walk in the room. Unfortunately, Dexter has suffered a bit in the "School of Hard Knocks." He has an old injury to his hip from some sort of accident before his time with us. X-rays reveal that his femural head is crushed. We took him to Pet Wellness to see if he was a candidate for an FHO surgery to remove the femural head. After consulting with an orthopedic specialist and studying x-rays we were advised that Dexter is fine without the surgery. His femural head has been crushed so doesn't need to be removed. Dexter has a barely perceptible limp, but gets along fine and doesn't seem painful. As if that isn't enough for one shelter dog to bear, we have also found out that Dexter is heartworm positive. He will be an excellent candidate for heartworm treatment and we are happy to discuss options for that and contribute to his treatment. The Clay County Animal Shelter is located at 14400 Hwy. 45 in Louisville, IL. Our phone number is 618-665-3005. The shelter is open to the public 1-3 M-F. Sundays we are open 1-4 to the public.
