You can learn about the adoption process by visiting: http://k-9lifesavers.org/?page_id=48 Dog's Name: Walker Estimated Breed: hound mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years Approximate Weight: 60+ pounds Currently Living at: Boarding- Walker would LOVE a foster! Adoption Fee: $300 Poor Walker, he found himself at a high kill shelter down South, but luckily K-9 Lifesavers saved him and brought him up North to find a home. However, he has been in boarding for a while now, and he needs to learn what it means to live in a house. He loves the open space and would have a lot of fun playing in a backyard. Walker is a real smart guy. He is very food motivated, super playful and adores his tennis balls and squeaky toys. He loves to have fun with other dogs, but he does put a lot of energy into it sometimes. Can you make his wish come true? Your new pet will require a refresher in house-training. K-9 Lifesavers strongly recommends all new adopters enroll their new pet into obedience training. This provides for an easier transition into a new home, ensures the dog remains well socialized, and helps form a bond between the dog and the new family. Adoption fees cover basic vetting, spay/neuter surgery, rabies, distemper/parvo vaccinations, treatment for worms, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention, monthly flea/tick prevention, and our transport costs. Foster Program: Foster homes provide for the temporary care of a rescue until the dog is placed into a loving, forever home. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

They have all found great homes, and now Jodi is ready to be someone's baby for a change. She loves to go for walks and is very affectionate. She is well mannered and eager to please. This handsome guy with soft fur was sprung from a shelter in rural West Virginia. When he was picked up he was very unsure of why he was being loaded into a big white van, he was scared and confused. We kept telling him he was safe, loved and had a bright future ahead. Within a few days Guy's sweet and playful nature was uncovered! He loves playing with other dogs, likes to play outside in the big kennel runs and is eager to learn more doggie manners like basic commands. Guy is a lovable lug and really enjoys going to our weekend Adoption Events. Guy knows exactly where we keep the treats and likes to hang around pretending not to know all the wonderful manners he's learned like "sit" and "down"! He also loves to eat bananas and apples, and getting belly rubs. He's housetrained but doesn't do well in a crate...but he's a good boy so no crate required. Camo doesn't get do well with dogs that he doesn't know, so no need to take him to the dog park :) Camo is a special needs dog - He has been epileptic since January 2016 and is on medication twice a day.
