Posted Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Mixed. Nitro was rescued from a crowded shelter when he was about to be PTS due to him failing shelter tests. Nitro was neglected and never trained. He was active untrained and reactive. We tested him and saw his potential to learn. Nitro is very smart and wanted to learn. Our first impression of him was that he was a high energy dog but that soon changed after a year of training with our trainer (working /service dogs). After his initial excitement at being rescued from the shelter we saw that he was ready to follow the lead of his human handlers and be a well behaved dog. Nitro is smart! Update January 2016: Nitro has been doing great at our trainer/boarding home. They report that he is very eager to learn and is a fast learner. He loves playing tug-o-toy and fetching balls. Great with other dogs and listens. He is treat motivated very athletic strong and smart. Update September 2016: Nitro's current foster home reports that Nitro is a very well behaved and gentle dog. He is house trained and very well behaved. He is very good on a walks or jogs and is eager to go when his foster picks up his leash. Nitro is good when meeting other dogs but sometimes needs a quick reminder to calm if he gets too excited. He sleeps all night and will be calm during the day but he's always ready to play ball or go for a brisk walk. He tolerates a bath well loves to be groomed performs simple tasks for a treat and doesn't guard his food. He loves to chew on his toys and chews. He is fine being left home alone for about four hours with a safe chew (bully stick). Nitro will alert bark only when he senses a threat such as strange noises outside or a knock on the door. Noise from cars trucks lawnmowers fireworks and vacuum cleaners do not bother him but he enjoys howling when sirens pass by. Nitro has not had much exposure to children but has done well with those that he has met with handler. Due to his strength and size kids 12 years and up with dog experience. Nitro needs a experienced guardian (a plus with this his breed type) who will give him plenty of daily exercise and fun activity (fetch training fun dog sport). Nitro wants to be your loyal best friend and forever family member. He is a super great dog and we all love him!

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Spaniel / Mixed. Nellie was originally rescued from a shelter where she was fearful in her cage. Nellie was adopted in 2009 and returned due to her barking at visitors at her home. She had Nellie on mood altering drugs (from vet) for anxiety which did not work. After many months in our wonderful foster home Nellie no longer needs them. Holistic and fresh foods along with daily exercise and training has helped her detox to be happy and calm. 11/15/15 Foster Home Update: Nellie is a sweet friendly affectionate little girl. She loves to sit on my lap belly rubs and will do anything for a snack... food motivated! Nellie gets along well and is respectful to my three dogs though at this time she is more interested in me than playing with my dogs. Nellie loves to go on her daily 30-45 minute walks and zoom around in the yard with other dogs. Nellie currently sleeps in the family room un-crated without issue. She will make someone very happy! Due to her small size and sensitive nature children 12 and older.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed. Liam was rescued from a crowded shelter where he was nervous. Once out he warms up and is gentle & friendly. Poor Liam suffered for years in pain with no proper vet care and badly neglected (left outside skinny badly matted) before he was dumped at a city shelter. Liam had severe dental decay with infections which required major severe dental surgery with x-rays biopsy and 14 infected/rotten decayed teeth extracts. The infections was so bad it caused a hole from his gum to the roof of his mouth to his nasal cavity (causing food & water to travel to his nasal area so he cannot eat properly). The hole required additional repair surgery. Huge thanks to his great foster home for all their TLC and driving him back/forth to the vet for all his vet needs. Update 9/10/15: Liam is doing great and very happy sweet & friendly. The two holes on the roof his mouth to his nasal cavity has not healed since his major dental surgery. FFR has taken care of all his needs which is very costly. Vet bills are over $2000. Donations greatly needed & appreciated to help Liam! 10/28/15: He saw the Dog Oral Specialist. $1200 xray & biopsy. Awaiting biopsy. No bone in room diseased roof tissue. Repair might not be possible. Awaiting test results. Donations needed to help cover his $3200 vet bills so far. 1/25/16 update:Unfortunately all of Liam's tests cultures and his biopsy came back negative (meaning no info) from two local specialists and the UC Davis specialists. One specialist suggested that is is perhaps an auto-immune illness (though blood test does not show anything) for the holes on the roof of his mouth (caused by his horrible neglected mouth/teeth infections when he was dumped). So now Liam is on steroids help him. Donations to help us with Liam's vet expenses are greatly needed and appreciated. His vet bills are now over $9000. Update from his Foster Home: Liam is doing very well with the steroid treatment. The holes in his mouth have stabilized and do not seem to be getting bigger. He now only needs to see the vet and get a blood test once a year. He is able to eat regular kibble and Primal raw food nuggets. Liam takes his steroid pills every other day with his food with no problems. Because of the holes in his mouth he prefers to drink water from a bottle (water bottles that small pets like rabbits drink from) than from a water bowl. He is a happy and sweet dog that loves his walks car rides and cuddling. Liam needs an experienced adult home. Miracle Club

Daisy is now healthy and taking care of her 3 puppies. She is sweet and friendly with foster family and their small dog. Daisy has a gentle timid personality. When her pups are weaned she will need a loving quiet home. Her pups are: Steve Swanson and Sugar. Update: She and her 3 pups are doing great. Her pups are weaned and have moved to their puppy foster home. Daisy is timid and nervous at first of change but warms up. Foster Home Update: She is doing well at her foster home. They report she is very active so she needs an attached yard to run and play besides her daily walks. If she had another active small dog to play with that would be ideal.

Posted Breed: Cairn Terrier / Mixed. Adorable Theo was shy at the shelter but once we took him out he was friendly fun and social. He loves other dogs and is affectionate with people. Theo is moderately active and would love to be your walking buddy or go to dog socials. He was neglected dirty and matted. Theo will be groomed after he recovers from his neuter surgery and relaxes at his foster home. Theo is a scruffy sweetie. Update: Theo is doing great at his foster home. He loves having someone around and very sweet. Easy dog. He follows his people around. Loves playing with another dog at home. Theo will be groomed soon. As for house-training you need to watch him or just take him out every two hours or so. You need to go with him and tell him to get busy and give him a treat and praise for going poddy. Like a puppy he is easily distracted so you must give him time to settle down and find his spot. Theo is active and happiest with another dog at home to play with. We do not know how Theo would be with cats.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Mixed. Tommy was adopted from us 3/1/17 at 4 mos old but now returning back to us at 6 mos old due to lack of time to take him to puppy training exercise and weekly dog socials. He now needs a very experienced adult foster home for all training training classes socials and daily active exercise. He is smart and needs the training now to ensure he will be a good citizen as an adult. We have to see how dog reactive he is now. He doesn't know any commands and will jump on people to greet them. Fun dog sport would benefit him. Tommy was rescued from a crowded shelter. He is super friendly active playful and confident. Great with other dogs. He needs training with guarding his bully stick chew (low growl) with trade. He is thin (was starved) and needs healthy food. Tommy is smart and knows to sit for treats. Loves attention and needs training. He is ready for puppy classes and fun socials. Tommy is adorable. Due to chew bone (high value) guarding he needs an experienced adult home to train him. Maybe dog experienced kids 12 yrs+. He will grow up to be a large smart and athletic dog. More info. to come as we learn about his personality.

Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Mixed. Sherlock was rescued from a crowded shelter. He is smart curious confident and gorgeous. Super people friendly alert snuggly and loves attention but he needs a leader to guide him. He can get anxious and nervous (Llasa personality). He is good with other small dogs with proper introductions on leash but he wants to be the top dog (alpha) at home especially with other male dogs. He did well with other dogs during our testing and on walks. Loves walks & socializing. He needs adult very experienced guardian only. Sherlock is sensitive and needs the guardian to be his leader with confidence (he will sense anxious/nervous person) and tell him what to do vs coddling (he will get confused). Guardian must be confident and guide him. He was leary and fearful of young kids (will nip). At home he likes to follow person around but does not like his face petted and may nip if stressed. Sherlock needs access to yard or walk for mid-day potty break. He needs daily exercise and someone home more or someone that can consistently give him a mid-day break. With our volunteers he is friendly walks well on leash and listens. Will snuggle in our laps (both women & men) when he trusts the person. Sherlock wants to bond to confident person who will guide him and he will listen. Smart. At his foster home we learned that Sherlock is very allergic to Dust Mites (in carpet). After many vet visits and holistic vets he is now on raw diet only and herbs for his allergy. So he needs a home with no carpet to avoid dust mites. He needs experienced quiet adult home and NO KIDS.

All were nervous but sweet. At our vet office they are happy and friendly with their staff for attention food and walks. Update from Foster Home: Bouncy is thriving at her foster home. She is a happy active girl who loves daily walks visits to the dog park and an evening of watching TV on her human's lap. Bouncy may be shy at first but warms up quickly and is enthusiastic affectionate loving snuggly playful and a wonderful companion. She would be happiest in a home with a moderately active companion dog and a quiet predictable home. Children 12 yrs and older as sudden movement and noise may frighten her.

Posted Breed: Maltese / Mixed. 7/8/2017: Update from foster home: Zeke has come along way. 7 months ago he was so starved you could feel his ribs and hip bones. He was very fearful of people would bark at them. No big dogs for Zeke (little dog syndrome). Zeke is now used to people coming in and out of the house not so fearful of foster home's husband anymore will climb up and give him a kiss. It's taken him a long time to trust but with his abusive last home that is what is expected with these dogs. Loves his little squeaky toys (doesn't squeak them) just loves to carry around the house and when done carries them inside his kennel. Kind of a little toy hoarder. He also loves playing with his foster home's little dog. Very adorable personality. Zeke would be great in a home as an only dog or with another small female companion. He will bond to the female quicker and may take time to warm up to a male in the home. Ezekiel needs to learn that he is safe and feels loved. He will need an experienced adult-only home. NO KIDS since he may nip when nervous.
