A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Miss Annie comes to us from a rural WV shelter, where she was found as a stray. The shelter has a high rate of euthanasia, and we pulled her out just in time! She's a laid back, sweet gal, who just needs a family to love, a nice soft pillow, and some toys. She's fine with other dogs and kids. We don't know about cats. She's a beagle = she must have a fence. Electronic fences are not acceptable for this baby. Her life has already been tough enough, and she doesn't need shocked in the head. Posted Breed: Collie / Carolina Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Paws Crossed Dog Rescue serves the Eastern Panhandle of WV and surrounding areas. Please read "Adoption Info" on the left of our website. Ivy comes to us from a rural, southern WV shelter, where her time was getting very limited. We pulled her to safety just in time, and she's now in a wonderful foster home, where she can be the fabulous girl that she was meant to be! We've had her completely vetted, spayed, and now she gets socialization skills, so she'll be the best girl she can be! We will not place her in a home that uses any electronic fence device. We don't know how she'd do with cats. **Note from foster: Ivy came to us from the shelter as a shy and cautious girl. She needs careful introductions with other dogs as she tends to bark in a way that might send the wrong signal. Once in our home, she found her place in the pack within a few days and is now good buddies with the three other dogs here. She is loyal, eager to please, and food motivated. We are working on basic commands. She does well on a leash and loves wrestling and running with the other dogs here. Ivy is one of those dogs that checks on us and each of the other dogs at night before she tucks herself in. She wags her tail with happiness at your sheer presence in the room. She is a joy to foster and provides a wonderful playmate for our other dogs. She is somewhat dominant initially so I would recommend pairing her with a more submissive friend(s) in her forever home. Please read "Adoption Info" on the left side of our website. Little Maddie comes to us from a southern WV shelter. We think she's about 1 & 1/2 years old. She was brought to the shelter because her owner was hospitalized, and there was no one else to care for her. She is very shy and timid when you first meet her but all she wants is love. She will need family who can give her a lot of love and patience. She would do better in a home without young children because she can get scared easily. She enjoys spending time running around outside. She will require a home with a fenced yard. If you're ready for a little lap dog, and one that will provide unconditional love forever, this might be your girl! Email inquiries can be made to PawsCrossedDogRescue@yahoo.com

Please read "Adoption Information" on our website. Little Jax comes to us from a rural, southern WV shelter. We think he's a Schnauzer/Scottie mix, but we're not really sure?!? No matter what mix he is... he's a handsome boy! He's a friendly, playful, funny dog. He will require a fence. Invisible or electric fences are not acceptable. There are no exceptions. Jax is a dog that likes a lot of exercise. He loves to play ball, and running with his person would be wonderful. He loves his people and would like to go everywhere with his family. He has a lot to give to a family that is active. He would love to hike or go for a very long walk. Lets just say Jax is very athletic. He is always ready for a good game in the backyard. Then after a good work out, he is ready to sit with you on the couch to watch TV. Email inquiries can be made to PawsCrossedDogRescue@yahoo.com

      Breed: Beagle
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Hedgesville, WV
Posted Breed: Beagle (short coat). Take a Chance on me! This past year I lost my home through no fault of my own, so now I am looking for a new friend to love since my Papa recently went to heaven. I loved being able to run around in the back yard and nap on the sunny deck, and although my foster family loves me, I am ready to get all the attention for myself again. One of these pictures shows me resting for a quick moment from chasing bugs. I'm always chasing something! The other is me reflecting on my life. I am handsome, aren't I? Everybody who knows me calls me 'The Nose' because, like any self-respecting Beagle, I love to follow a scent where ever it leads. So I guarantee you that our walks will often be an adventure if you decide to take a Chance on me. I am housebroken, crate trained, and I reliably come when called, except when I'm outside of a fenced yard- go figure! My start in life was humble. For the first year of my life I lived in a box outdoors and was a breeder dog for a puppy mill that has long since been closed. Then I was rescued and found my way to live with a very nice, much older couple for several years. And now, having grieved losing them both (they were in their 80's), I am at peace and ready to love again. Right now I am being fostered by a family that has several dogs, and I am used to being an only dog with my parents, so that is what I am really hoping to find again. The way I came to mistrust other dogs was when I was attacked by 2 much bigger dogs who had escaped their yard when I was on my daily leash walk with Papa in September of 2012. I am lucky to be here, and I know that I have a reason to be here since I still have so much love to give. Although I am a senior citizen myself, I am happy and active. My retirement plan is to keep my place right next to you on the sofa warm, to score treats whenever I can, and to be your new best friend. Will you take a Chance on me? Posted Breed: Boxer / Hound / Mixed (short coat). We are "courtesy-posting" Thor for another rescuer. He's in a loving foster home, but needs to find his forever home! We could arrange transport once an adoption application, including home visit, is completed and approved. His family had to give him up because they lived in a breed discriminating location. He's very smart - knows basic commands such as sit, and shake/give paw. He'd do best in a home with a fence. He's fine with other dogs, and is curious about cats, but isn't bothered by them. If you're ready for just an awesome, awesome boy who loves to run, play fetch, and just do whatever you want to do, Thor is your boy! He's fine if you just want to watch movies & eat popcorn, too! He's house trained, crate trained, leash trained, and just needs a family! He's up to date on all vetting, too! Email inquiries can be made to nicolemikes@yahoo.com

Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Izzy is a courtesy-post for another individual, rescue, or shelter. She is not a Paws Crossed Rescue dog. Contact information and adoption details can be received from the individual listed below. This is simply a courtesy post to get exposure for the dog to increase her chances of getting adopted. She is available for adoption!! Izzy is a around 6 years old and a basset/beagle mix. She is current on vaccines and spayed. The hair-loss that you see is from a previous flea infestation that is now healing nicely. Izzy was pulled 2 weeks ago and is looking for a rescue, foster or a home. However, Izzy has some behavioral issues and would do best in a only dog home because she is not good with other dogs and has possession over toys. She also has seizures, she had her first one since she has been with us last night. Izzy is very sweet and loving and is crate trained also. Please help us find her a home or rescue!! Feel free to contact Erin if you have any questions or are interested. (304) 270-6984
