Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Hi - my name is Trace and I am a true hound boy. I just want a family that will love me forever. Here are some very important things you need to know about me Approximate age/birthdate: May 16, 2009 Weight/size: ~50 lbs Housebroken: mostly ... especially if let outside often (at least 4-5 times/day) Crate trained: YES (but may still have accidents if left too long) Personality: happy, playful, rowdy, bossy sometimes Energy level: medium Fenced yard required?: YES - that hound nose could take him on some bad journeys Does he/she jump fences? NO Leash walk: YES – but still pulls Obedience training: Knows ‘sit’ Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK but is anxious Spayed/neutered: YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES Microchipped: YES Social with other dogs: YES with medium/large non-alpha dogs if introduced properly ... he is too rowdy for most smaller dogs (under 25 lbs) Social with cats: NO CATS Good with children: Hasn’t been around children while in foster care but would probably be fine with older children. He is big and rowdy and would probably overwhelm younger children. Adoption fee: $75 Trace is a handsome hound mix boy. His mother is a small redbone hound mix and dad must have been really handsome, too. Funny how he and his brothers looked nothing alike and none of them look like Mom. Even though he has ‘hound genes,’ he has figured out that he likes living inside instead of out hunting in the woods. Yes, he’s a bit spoiled! True to his hound heritage, Trace's housebreaking and crate training has been challenging. He will happily stay in his crate, but he does still have occasional accidents if left for too long. Trace plays well with his foster siblings most of the time. He has a little bossy streak and can misbehave unless he’s corrected. He listens well but has a short memory. Trace definitely needs a fenced yard to play safely in and a family who will work with training him, playing with him, and just loving him. He is such a sweet boy … very easy to love! With a strong, consistent person to guide him, he will be a great addition to the family. If you think Trace might be the perfect pup for you, please go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org, click on Forms/Application and complete your adoption application online. We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits. You can expedite the process by providing accurate email addresses for all your references. Time to make phone calls is limited and we often have 10 or more applications in process. We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible. When your application is approved, we will schedule a meet-and-greet to see if Trace picks you too. If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee, and an adoption contract to be signed. Please feel free to email weluvpups@hotmail.com if you have additional questions.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Age: Adult
      Location: Huddleston, VA
Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Foster for more information about this pet. Hello … my name is Lexi and I am an AAMR Super Star! Here are some very important things you need to know about Lexi Approximate age/birthdate: Born ~ 2007 Weight/size: 50 lbs Housebroken: Yes Crate trained: YES Personality: typical lab happiness, loves people Energy level: medium with some bursts of high energy Fenced yard required?: YES unless family is committed to daily walks/runs to be sure she gets adequate exercise Does he/she jump fences? She can climb fences and will if she is being isolated and ignored. She wants to be with her people. Leash walk: YES Obedience training: Knows ‘sit’ Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK Spayed/neutered: YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES Microchipped: YES Social with other dogs: YES Social with cats: Will chase cats Good with children: Fine with older/larger children – may topple a toddler Adoption fee: $75 Do you love chocolate? I was born in 2007, and I look like I could have some chocolate lab in the mix. I am a goofball and I have a sense of humor. I’ll do things I know I’m not supposed to do (like trying to steal something from the trash can) and then when Foster Mom catches me I’ll run and hide under the bed. I still love to run and play but since I’ve matured, I’m not as wild and crazy as I was in my youth. I love to stretch out on the sofa and chill. My foster siblings get mad because I really like to lay ON them too. I love to play outside so I would love to have a new home with a fenced yard, but I can also do some long leash walks if you want. I don’t like to spend a lot of time alone and I REALLY don’t want to be alone during a thunderstorm or when there are other loud noises. Yes. I weigh about 50 pounds so I have no reason to be such a chicken, but, oh well … that’s just the way I am. Speaking of weight … I am a beggar. I will stare at you while you eat and if you try to ignore me, I WILL talk to you … softly at first, but I’ve been known to let out my big-girl bark when I need attention. I do know ‘sit’ and ‘outside’ and I will try to do whatever you want if there is a chance there is a treat for me involved. Sadly I have spent a lot of my life with AAMR. I love them and they love me, but I really want a family of my own so my foster family can rescue another dog that needs help. I have been adopted twice and returned to AAMR now. When I was very young I was in a public pound facility and was rescued by AAMR. Then I was adopted and got returned after more than a year due to some family changes. I got adopted again, but I wasn’t happy being left outside in a pen all day while my new Dad worked, so I kept figuring out how to escape. May Dad wasn’t happy, so he sent me back to AAMR again. I don’t think I’m really so bad and I sure would like to live happily-ever-after with a family who would love me forever. If you’re willing to give me a chance to be your new best friend, please go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org/forms and fill out the adoption application so we can meet soon! My adoption fee is only $75 and I hope you think I’m worth it. Location: Huddleston, VA
Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Hello … my name is Chessie and I am an AAMR Super Star! I am a big sweet girl who just loves to be loved. I’m not a puppy any more - probably born in 2007 – but I still have lots of love to give. All I need now is a family of my very own to share the rest of my life with. I will be sooooo good … and I’ll do everything I can to bring joy to your life. I’d love to have someone who would take time every day to scratch my ears and rub my belly. That makes me very happy. I also love to go on walks with my people. I am energetic enough to like to play, but calm enough to be a good companion. Just tell me what you want to do! Oh ... I would really love to be an only child. I get along fine with all my foster friends that I have known for a while, but sometimes I don't meet new dogs well. My Foster Mom says I have some pretty good house manners. I’m not too pushy demanding attention, but I really want to stay close to where you are. If you tell me where you want me to be, I’ll do my best to try to stay there. Here at my foster home I don’t have to ‘ask’ to go outside to potty because we get to go out in playgroups several times every day, but I know that’s where I’m supposed to go. I will even stay in a crate if you ask me too even though it’s not my favorite place to be. I don’t mind being leash walked, but I would LOVE to have a fenced yard to play in. It will keep me safe because I do have a bad habit of wandering off … but I’m usually just looking for someone to play with. My size sort of scares people sometimes, so my search for friends does not always make other people happy. My Foster Mom says I’m sorta smart. I do know ‘sit’ and most of the time I will come when she calls me (unless I’m busy doing something else!) I sorta like to ride in the car. I don’t get to do it very often, but I think I could really learn to like it as long as I could be with my people. So … here are some other important things about me … I weigh about 70 lbs (ok maybe I could lose a few pounds), I am spayed, up-to-date on my shots, and I am microchipped. If you think I might be a good fit for your family, please fill out the Dog Adoption Application online at www.allamericanmuttrescue.org . I do come with papers … Adoption Papers … the best kind. And my adoption fee is $75. Note from the AAMR Adoption Committee: We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits. We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible. When your application is approved, we will schedule a meet-and-greet and home visit to see if Chessie picks you too. Posted Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Cindy for more information about this pet. Hello … my name is Ringo and I am an AAMR Super Star! Can anybody show a mutt some love? I have spent a lot of my life in foster care, and I am a really good guy. All I really want is to have a family to call my very own. I’m a mutt and I look like I probably have some yellow lab in the mix. Here are some very important things you need to know about me … Approximate age/birthdate: 2007 Weight/size: ~50 lbs Housebroken: mostly Crate trained: YES Personality: happy, sweet, loving, playful Energy level: medium Fenced yard required?: YES Does he/she jump fences? YES – he has been guilty of jumping a fence or two ... and unlatching a few gates. As he has gotten older he doesn't play the 'escape artist' as often ... especially when he has a playmate. Will also do ok for short periods of time on a zip line Leash walk: YES Obedience training: Knows ‘sit’ and listens well Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK Spayed/neutered: YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES Microchipped: NO Social with other dogs: YES – if introduced properly and the other dog is not an alpha/dominant. He will take up for himself if challenged. Social with cats: NO CATS Good with children: Will be ok with older children Adoption fee: $75 Ringo is a sweet yellow lab mix boy and you will just melt when you look into those soulful brown eyes. He’s is a little reserved (probably due to not always being treated kindly) at first, but once he trusts you, he thinks he is a lap dog! He has so much love to give and just wants to be loved in return. He has done well with housebreaking and crate-training and he loves to be close to his people. Ringo plays well with most of his foster pup siblings. He has been picked on by a couple of them – he never starts anything but he will try to defend himself (as he should). Typically lab, he really wants to make his people happy, and he seems to learn new things very quickly. He listens well and a new family using positive-reinforcement and rewards could probably get him to do just about anything! Ringo has jumped a 4-foot fence and climbed a 6’ fence, so he will need a taller fence or possibly an electronic underground (invisible) fence. He’s also very creative and can figure out how to unlatch gates and pull apart fencing JUST enough to let himself out. When he’s out, he comes looking for his people! He is moderately energetic, but like all dogs, he needs to get adequate exercise daily to stay healthy and happy, so having a safe place to play is important. He would also be happy to go on long walks or runs every day with his new family. He needs to be an inside boy and play outside supervised with a family member. If you think Ringo might be the perfect pup for you, please go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org, click on Forms/Application and complete your adoption application online. Here are some very important things you need to know about Rudy Approximate age/birthdate: born ~2007 Weight/size: ~15 lbs (yes … he is on the husky side) Housebroken: YES Crate trained: YES Personality: We lovingly call him “the grumpy old man” – very independent – definitely not your typical lap dog Energy level: low Fenced yard required?: YES – it is important that he has a safe place to get out to get exercise – he likes to eat and tends to be a bit on the pudgy side Does he/she jump fences? NO Leash walk: YES but he isn’t thrilled about it Obedience training: Knows ‘sit’ and he is treat motivated … and stubborn Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK Spayed/neutered: YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES Microchipped: YES Social with other dogs: YES although he grumbles at them Social with cats: Will bark at them Good with children: NO – he is not playful and does not like to be picked up, held, taunted or teased Adoption fee: $75 Rudy is just Rudy! He was in a high-kill shelter and he looked so pitiful sitting in the huge kennel. But it didn’t take long for the ‘real’ Rudy to emerge! He grumbles … I think he’s trying to talk. He gets very indignant if you speak sternly to him or fuss at him about anything. He wiggles and grins at you when you talk baby talk to him and tell him he’s a good boy. He grumbles at all the other foster dogs although he never has any issues with any of them. He doesn’t really ‘play’ with any of them, but he doesn’t really play with people either. He's older now and a bit arthritic, but nothing stops him! Rudy is the pup who will sit beside you instead of on your lap. He doesn’t really like being picked up … he’s much happier if he can just follow you around … or have you follow him around. Rudy is NOT a snuggly cuddly! But he IS a terrific little guy who deserves to live a happy life with a family who loves him for who he is – quirks and all. He is fine with adults who respect him and will love him with all his funny ways. He is fine with other dogs who can ignore his grumbling. He is fine with cats. He will bark fiercely at them as long as he’s inside and they’re outside. My guess is that face-to-face he would be afraid of them. He will NOT do well with children. He doesn’t like a lot of loud activity around him. Everyone needs to be respectful around him … if awakened suddenly or teased and taunted, he will snap. He does not like to feel threatened or backed in a corner and he will come out snarling. He simply needs love, care and respect. If you think Rudy might be the perfect pup for you, please go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org, click on Forms/Application and complete your adoption application online. Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Huddleston, VA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Ziggy is my name. Being crazy and goofy is my game. I would love to find a new family soon. Here are some very important things you need to know about me. Approximate age/birthdate: DOB 12/9/2008 Weight/size: ~ 30 lbs Housebroken: YES Crate trained: YES Personality: definitely an alpha with other dogs, submissive with people, very intelligent, active, social, territorial Energy level: high/medium Fenced yard required?: YES – he gets very protective of his space and will run at “intruders”. He will bark at other dogs when they are separated by a fence, but he will play with them when they are in the same yard. Does he/she jump fences? NO – but he will dig under a fence if he gets bored and unsupervised Leash walk: YES - he will pull but he does take correction well Obedience training: Knows ‘sit,’ ‘down,’ ‘off,’ ‘wait’ Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK Spayed/neutered: YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES Microchipped: YES Social with other dogs: YES – but he does tend to be alpha when allowed Social with cats: NO CATS Good with children: Only older children (10 and over) – his energy will be overwhelming to toddlers/younger children Adoption donation: $75 Ziggy is an alpha personality – a little dog with a big personality. He is a wonderful pup with so much potential! We think with the proper direction he might even be a stellar agility dog because he shows a great ability to focus. He will do best with an experienced, confident owner who will be a strong pack leader so Ziggy doesn’t think he needs to be in charge. He will test you, but once he is convinced that you are in charge, he’s very obedient. He will challenge other dogs (especially if there is a fence between them), but will stand down when consistently corrected. Once he makes friends with another dog, the challenges stop. In his foster home, he plays well in groups of 7 – 8 dogs. Ziggy has nice house manners and he is always the pup that sits quietly waiting for his dinner. He is a very smart boy and his new family needs to be pretty clever to stay a step ahead of him! He is not a good choice for first time pet owners and will do best with a family with terrier/active dog experience. If you think Ziggy might be the perfect pup for you, please go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org, click on Forms/Application and complete your adoption application online. Please review our adoption process at http://www.allamericanmuttrescue.org/info/adoption and contact us if you have questions about the process. We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits. You can expedite the process by providing accurate email addresses for all your references. Time to make phone calls is limited and we often have multiple applications in process. We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible. When your reference checks are completed and your application is tentatively approved, we will schedule a home visit and a meet-and-greet to see if Ziggy picks you too. If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption contract to be signed and a requested adoption donation. Please feel free to email weluvpups@hotmail.com if you have additional questions.

Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Foster for more information about this pet. Here are some very important things you need to know about Ghira Approximate age/birthdate: August 2009 Weight/size: ~ 55 lbs Housebroken: YES Crate trained: YES Personality: shy, reserved, sweet, loving Energy level: medium Fenced yard required?: YES Does he/she jump fences? NO Leash walk: YES Obedience training: Knows ‘sit’ and ‘off’ – will not come when called if she is scared or stressed Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK Spayed/neutered: YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES Microchipped: YES Social with other dogs: YES - does not care for dominant or very anxious dogs Social with cats: Will chase them and might attempt to harm them – not known definitively Good with children: No children under under 12 Adoption fee: $125 Ghira reminds us of luxurious Ghiradelli chocolates! She is a beautiful lab/pittie mix girl but she isn’t exuberant and outgoing like a lot of pups. You can tell when she’s happy or when she’s stressed by looking in her eyes. She was picked up as a stray and we still can’t believe someone wasn’t frantically looking for her. Ghira seems to trust other dogs more than she trusts most people. She is definitely an inside girl and once she bonds with you, she wants to be close to you most of the time. Ghira loves sunbathing and napping in the shade. She has always had other dogs around, so we don't know if she would have separation anxiety if left alone for long hours without another dog around. If there is another dog in the home, she will do best with an older, calm, submissive dog. She will be happiest with a fenced yard where she can play safely off-leash with her new family. She will do best in a calm, laid-back household that is pretty ‘settled.’ Due to her anxiety with new people, she will do best with a family who doesn’t have a lot of different people coming and going frequently. She won’t handle a lot of loud activity with children well either. She likes her world calm and quiet. She can handle activity with dogs, but not with people! Ghira has lived her life in rescue, and we would love to have a person or family adopt her who would accept her for the sweetie she is and accept and love her shy, reserved personality. With patience and love we think she will bring lots of joy and love to a lucky family.
