Posted Breed: Schnauzer / Terrier / Mixed. *** COURTESY LISTING *** PLEASE CALL OR E-MAIL THE PERSON LISTED. DO NOT CONTACT WARF AS WE HAVE NO FURTHER INFO. Are you looking for that special dog, the one whose life you know only you can make better? Are you seeking to rescue a sweet, gentle soul who has been searching for a place to call home and people of his very own? Will you open your heart and home to this special fellow whose minor issues will be resolved with your love, companionship and patience? If so, then please consider Ernie. He is approximately 6 years old and an adorable scruffy kind of boy. We think he has a bit of terrier in him. He is extremely sensitive and would thrive in a home that is relatively quiet and laid back. He is fine with cats and other dogs as long as they are not too pushy or demanding. He will do everything in his power to avoid confrontations, but will let other dogs know when they've pushed him to the limit. If you have a mellow dog, Ernie would be great with it. Ernie enjoys going for walks as they broaden his horizons and bolster his confidence. He also enjoys basking in the sunshine. Ernie gets extremely animated at meal times (his) and when his people come home. He is crate trained and having one would help him adjust to a new home and routines. Ernie is very well mannered and understands basic commands. But, the terrier in him can make him a little stubborn! Nothing is known about Ernie's previous life before coming into rescue a year ago. The one thing we do know is he wants to be around his favorite person(s) as much as possible so a work at home, or retired person would be ideal. If interested in adopting Ernie, you need to realize he is not a wash and wear kind of guy. He will need to meet you, visit your home, have you take him for walks and possibly “daycare” him for an hour or two over the course of time so that he becomes quite familiar with you, your home and yard. Inquires can be directed to Delores at (775) 241-7210 or dmcgifford@charter.net.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Zeus (black and white) and Buddha (solid black) are two of the most affectionate dogs you will meet. They are Pit Bull Terrier mixes, neutered, over a year old, and rescued from a hoarding situation. They are shy due to the lack of human contact for their first 9 months, and very submissive. Over the last three months they have been heavily socialized and are fun and loving sweethearts, who are totally submissive though they love to play hard and would make great hiking buddies. Once comfortable, it is ALL about KISSES- lots of kisses and wanting to snuggle. These little angels are great with all dogs, people, kids and are cat curious but not aggressive. They are super smart, know sit on command. They are treat driven, and take treats gently. They are learning how to be real dogs more and more daily. They can be adopted together or separately, but ideally would do best with another dog companion to continue their rehab. They are very eager to please. They are like moldable clay, with gentle and consistent training these two will be the best companions ever. Currently in rescue with Yogis for Good. Adoption fee, future updates and home check required. For more information: Tanyarose@yogajuicebox.com, 530-386-9008.

Cleo is a senior at 14 years old. She is all personality. She likes to talk, and she will sing with you. She adores people and is friendly to all dogs, but no cats. If you are sitting down, she will come over and put her head on your lap. If that doesn't get your attention, she will poke you with her nose. She has that wonderful big bully smile. You can't help but smile when you look at her. She loves to chase, a laser pointer is her favorite, but will chase after a ball as well, only she has no idea what to do when she gets to it so turns around (without the ball, of course) and runs back to her person with a big smile on her face and her tail wagging a mile a minute. If we could figure out how to hook something up to that tail, we could generate enough energy to run a small town! It never stops wagging-even in her sleep! She is a happy happy dog and makes all those around her happy as well. Cleopatra is crate trained, house broken, microchipped, current of her shots and knows basic obedience. She can also catch treats tossed at her. She loves her food and would happily search the kitchen floor for dropped goodies if you let her. Contact is Cyndi: Email: dpawzhaveit@gmail.com.

ABIGAIL aka ABBY: I am a Chihuahua mix about 7 lbs. DOB 3/23/11. I am house broken, crated trained and have been working on some basic commands. Although I may take some time to warm up to you, once I know I can trust you I am the most affectionate, little love bug as can be. I am still a bit unsure about myself in new situations, so I would thrive in a home that can help me build up my confidence, and believe in me. As long as I have been properly introduced I would make a great companion for you and with other dogs and cats. In fact my favorite thing to do of all time is to sit on your lap and cuddle. I am up to date on vaccines, spayed and microchipped and awaiting my new forever home. At adoption we provide; veterinary records and vaccine certificates, spay certificate, lifetime lost animal support, leash, collar, ID tag, and a familiar toy or blanket to help me settle in. We also keep in contact and try to help with any issues that may need to have additional support. Adoption Requirements: Application, Interview, Homecheck, Adoption fee apply.
