A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

ANDREA (Semme,Alabama to Cropwell, Alabama) ( date of app 8/13/2013) I am a private citizen that loves Dobermans and normally I assist rescues indirectly by posting available Dobermans for adoption and supporting fund raising efforts on my Facebook Doberman Page. "for the love of dobermans" I am involved with this Doberman "Andrea because her current Foster in Mobile Alabama pull her from a high kill animal shelter because we have an adopter for her in Hollywood, California. We have raised money and payed her vet bill. We have $400 for her air transport via United Airlines from Birmingham, Alabama to Hollywood, California. However last night her foster while driving her to the airport was in an auto accident that has totaled her car and caused her physical injuries. While not life threatening she is not going to be able to make this trip again for some time

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). TANNER (Pitbull)( San Diego, CA to VIrginia Beach, Virginia) My roommate in San Diego packed her stuff and just left, and I got kicked out because i couldn't afford it alone and the Landlord and I couldn't get a hold of her. I had to move to Virginia Beach with my sister. Unfortunately, I was trying to pay rent as much as I could, and was kicked out with no money. I couldn't afford to bring my dear baby Pit Bull, Tanner, with me. Once I got to Virginia, my first dog sitter took my money and put him in a shelter. I couldn't let him rot away and die in a shelter! I paid what I had left to get him out, but unfortunately they neutered him. At this time he is at a pet sitter that I am paying, but I can't save up with the cost of living, gas, and the sitter. I have tried raising money by selling dream catchers and art but it failed. Its been two months and the sitter says if I don't get him soon, she will have to take him back to the shelter.

MYSTERY (huskyx)(Chicago, Ill to Los Angeles, California)( 45#, 10y, my) Tell us a brief story.: We took him -- a scared emaciated puppy -- out of the Chicago city shelter and fostered him 9 years ago. We placed him into a loving home in Chicago, which was great for many years. But we recently heard from that family and they have fallen on terrible times... the husband is in jail and the wife has cancer and their house in in foreclosure. They are looking to give him back to a shelter. I now live in Los Angeles and I have offered to adopt the dog but we don't how to get him to us. He's a gentle soul.
