A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Chihuahua / Mixed (medium coat). Charlie is a ShihTzu / Chihuahua mix that came to us after local animal control officers seized him from a hoarding situation. He is a very sweet little man weighing in at about 9 lbs. Charlie is current on vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. He has tested heartworm negative. Current on flea preventative and heartworm preventative. Charlie is shy and hesitant, but warms up with a little encouragement. He loves a comfortable lap, and is great with kids and other small dogs. Charlie likes nice cats, but has learned to be wary of sulky ones. This little guy walks well on a leash and is kennel-trained. **Please note that like all pups of similar breed, this pet has a grooming requirement. He will need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks, which requires more than just cutting his hair back, so a grooming reference is required. We ask that you factor the cost of grooming into your pet care budget. Adoption includes vetcheck, vaccinations, neuter, and microchip. Current on heartworm preventative and flea preventative. Waldo

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Where's Waldo? Waiting for you. This sweet pup is available for adoption and looking for a home to call his forever. Waldo is a young male Heeler mix who is good with dogs (big and small), lives harmoniously with adult cats, but is obsessed with kittens (he grooms his foster kitten and keeps a watchful eye over her). He knows basic commands: "sit," "down," and "heel." He walks great on a leash and is house and crate trained. Pssst....he has THE most fabulous ears, to boot. Waldo is almost a year old, but is a nice balance of young pup energy with the ability to be a snuggler. Most of the time, he's just lounging around with his foster siblings or snuggling with his foster dad, but he will play with the other dogs in his foster home.  Waldo is ok with older kids/teenagers and even infants, but has a fearful reaction to toddlers. Unfortunately, based on the fact that he was originally found abandoned in a home surviving on dirty diapers, we suspect that a young child or children were allowed to mistreat him, even if unintentionally. For this reason, we are recommending a home with older children or adults only. Waldo is current on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, and has tested heartworm negative. If you are interested in Waldo, please fill out a  Dog Adoption Application Our adoptions include a foster period of 4-6 weeks so that you can be sure that this pet is a good fit without any pressure, and we are available to answer any behavior or training questions during that time (and beyond, if you wish). ** Local adoptions preferred (within Greater New Orleans area and surrounding parishes). Tyler

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Bogle
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Beagle / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Tyler is a loving 4 yr old beagle/boxer mix who loves belly rubs and is a cheerful boy who makes fast friends with everyone he meets. He disputes the claim that 42 lbs is too big to be a lap dog. Tyler loves walks, an needs to be an inside-only dog as he does become bored without his humans. Tyler will especially appeal to beagle and hound fans who will appreciate his delightful disposition and enlist a sense of humor in encountering the eternal puppyhood that is a hallmark of the beagle breed. Yet, Boxer fans are sure to enjoy this boy as well. Tyler lives harmoniously with the cats in his foster home and will often deliver a driveby kiss to the ultra dog-friendly Tuxedo cat when passing him by, but barks his displeasure at stray cats and the one cat that swatted him when he first arrived. Tyler is sensitive, and though his world can be crumbled in 10 seconds by a mean ol' puddy tat, he has never met a stranger. He gets along with the other dogs in his foster home, both small and large, but we recommend another laid back dog his size. Tyler would also do well as an only dog, because it is human company that he truly appreciates. Tyler adores children and he palpably lights up in their presence. He is great with pre-teen/teenage kids, and as much as Tyler's stomach is ruled by his beagle half, many mornings, his foster mom has to pull back covers, move a 12 yr old's legs off of him, and lift him out the bed so that he will go eat breakfast. It's the one time of day that the clanking of food bowls does not override his drive to cuddle. This affable goof holds no concept of his physical size and truly considers himself a 20 lbs dog, and his initially zealous approach can be overwhelming for toddlers. Tyler is an old man and yet a puppy. He has claimed the living room armchair and when he is curled up with his naturally furrowed eyebrows, he looks like someone's grumpy ol' paw-paw. Tyler is in one minute a slow-moving slothlike snugglebug, and in the next, when directly addressed by name and with eye contact, his face transforms with the glee of recognition, ("Who me?!). The summoner is immediately smothered in kisses. Lots of kisses. (Enter Tyler's boxer half). This is also when Tyler transitions into his lap dog self. Tyler came into rescue, when after 4 yrs of living with his adoptive family, he was unceremoniously surrendered to the local shelter. We discovered that there was nothing wrong with Tyler except for that he was a normal hound, and everyone that meets him loves him. He keeps everyone laughing, unable to resist kissing his sweet face or snuggling with him. Tyler is current on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped. He is current on flea preventative and heartworm preventative and has tested heartworm negative. *Local adoptions (New Orleans and surrounding parishes) preferred. We do NOT ship animals. We will consider out-of-area adoptions when the adopter provides transport. If you are interested, please fill out an online application Our adoptions include a foster period of 4-6 weeks so that you can be sure that this pet is a good fit without any pressure, and we are available to answer any behavior or training questions during that time (and beyond, if you wish).

She adores the children in her foster home and she gets along with her canine foster brothers and sisters wonderfully. Rosalie will run and play outside and then she will come inside and relax with the family. She is the best of both worlds. Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Roxie Female American Staffordshire mix 2 yrs old 45 lbs Roxie is a sweet American Staffordshire mix who was found starving on the streets. Thanks to some residents of a nursing home, she was fed, but that was not a situation that could continue. After being passed along to a number of people who wanted to help but were not able to keep her, she entered foster care with her current caretakers. Roxie is good with dogs of all ages and sizes and shares her foster home with 5 other dogs ranging from young to 13 yrs old and weighing in at 15 lbs to 70 lbs. Roxie even meets the further challenge of living with one of the small dogs who is blind and has spinal injuries. However, she is exuberant and strong, even for the pint-sized package that she is. Therefore, we would recommend a home with older children, only because she might unintentionally knock a smaller child down in greeting them. Roxie has lots of energy and would be a great playmate for a medium to large dog, and she would be a great jogging partner. She has been curious and accepting of the cat in her foster home, who will nuzzle Roxie as she passes by. Roxie's foster parents supervise such encounters, and would recommend same for others at this point. Roxie is house trained and is learning basic obedience. Roxie is current on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped and has tested heartworm negative. She is current on heartworm preventative and flea preventative.
