Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. CUTE SCRUFFY GIRL: 6 years old / 11 lbs. I need a little patience but I'm sooooo worth it. I am a little slow to warm up to new people, but once I do, I'm a cuddly sweetheart who enjoys your lap and bed. I can be a bit nippy at first if you try to rush me, and I have bitten folks at PetSmart adoptions because it's loud and frightening there for me and folks tend not to take it slowly. I was best friends with my foster mom very quickly and when I went to the vet, they put a muzzle on me at first but after the tech held me for a few minutes I was fine. She took off the muzzle and I crawled into her lap. Did I mention I just don't like to be rushed? I love to go for walks and car rides because that means I get to spend more time with my person. I'll be happiest in a calm environment without a lot of people coming and going. Another playful and friendly dog would be nice in my new home as I do like to play and I do well on a schedule with my potty manners. Much older calm and quieter type kids only since I need time to warm up and have bitten when afraid. Energy level: 4 – 6. I'm current on vaccinations, spayed and my adoption fee is $100. I don't come to adoptions because it's pretty stressful for me, but you can talk to my foster mom for more information about me and to meet. Just send an email to adopt@mostlymutts.org.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Husky / Mixed. PLAYFUL AND INQUISITIVE GUY: 5 years old / 56 lbs. Mostly Mutts adoption facility is open Mon-Sat. 11-4pm. Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I’m a handsome fellow who is happy that I’ve been rescued! I was chained outside my whole life on a very short chain, but now I’m loving all the attention I’m getting! Lots of things are new to me since I was so restricted previously. I seem to like all the dogs I’ve met, so if you have a nice dog in your family, bring him/her to meet me and let’s see if we can be good pals! There is a kitty in my foster home, and after a several supervised introductions, we are now great buddies and even play together. I’m doing well with my potty habits in my foster home as long as I am taken out regularly. I don’t want to be left in the yard again, as I’m a sweet and social doggie who wants to be part of the family. When left in the yard, I dig and can jump a 6-foot fence. You’ll have to always keep an eye on me or leash when I’m in the yard. But, maybe we can do more neighborhood walks and park time instead of yard time. I’d like a family that will play with me as I’ve discovered toys and balls which are fabulous! I’m sweet, lovable and very playful! Life is good for me as I get to learn and experience so many new things that I was never taught before. I now love to ride in the car, but you’ll have to remind to stay seated as I like to look out all of the windows, even if you’re already sitting there! I walk well on a shorter leash, and that keeps me from pulling too much. My foster dad says I’ve already learned ‘sit’ and ‘no’ after a short time in his home, and maybe you can teach me more. Since I was on such a short chain and my movement was terribly restricted, my leg muscles did not get used in a normal way so sometimes you’ll notice that they quiver, however they are getting stronger every day! I was even able to go on a two-mile hike recently, and it was a lot of fun. My coat is growing back in nicely, thanks to good food and lots of TLC. I’ve had a rough life, but I’m so ready for a new beginning! I like my crate but sometimes I need little convincing to go in. I’m curious, come when called, and will give you a few little kisses to show you how much I love you. I’ve liked all the kids that I’ve met while out, so I may be good with children who are gentle with me. Energy level: 5-7. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, neutered and my adoption fee is $275.00.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. FRIENDLY, SNUGGLY & ACTIVE: 5 years old / 42 lbs. Mostly Mutts adoption facility is open Mon-Sat. 11-4pm. Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I’m a goofy and playful guy who loves snuggling in the laps of the volunteers who come to care for, feed, walk and play with me while I wait to find my forever home! I can see myself enjoying a family that will be active with me and will include me in on the fun! Runs or hikes sound good to me as well as just playing in the backyard. I have a few dog friends at the shelter that I play with and we have a good time, but I don’t like all dogs, so if you have a playful dog at home, we should meet and see if we’ll be good friends. I’m a vocal player which some of the volunteers jokingly call ‘smack talk’. When I came to MM’s it was discovered that I had a very painful tooth with 3 roots exposed, so that made me grumpy and I did snap at some folks making contact once. But once it was discovered and removed, things changed for the better for me! I was also on a strong dose of calming medication that didn’t work too well for me, so that had to be adjusted too. I’m just taking a small dose of medication now and my trainer thinks that I can probably come off it altogether one day. It’s just not the kind of thing you do quickly. I’m very smart and know the commands for ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘stay’, ‘look at me’, and ‘drop it’ for when we’re playing ball, which is loads of fun! I love to run and play catch and will bring the ball back to keep the game going. It’s best that we don’t play roughly together though as I don’t want to get carried away with the fun. I have very good potty manners at the shelter and do well in my crate too. I’ll soak up all the time and attention you can give, because it makes me feel loved. I have bursts of puppy energy and am a good combination of higher energy, sweetness and I’m pretty gentle too. I think once I get into a great home with regular exercise, I’ll settle nicely into your routine. Energy level: 6–8. Older kids as I can be a little toy possessive with people, which I’m in training for now, just ask about my training please. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, neutered and my adoption fee is $275.00.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Shepherd / Mixed. AN ENERGETIC & FUN GIRL: 4 years old / 39 lbs. Mostly Mutts adoption facility is open Mon-Sat. 11-4pm. Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I’m a fun and very active girl who is looking for a family that will be active with me and include me in on all the family fun! I can see myself going for walks or runs, hikes and perhaps even camping. I like to give kisses so you’ll always know you’re loved and I love playing fetch and will drop the ball on command. I also know ‘sit’ and ‘come’ and you can teach me even more! One thing I’ll need training on is my leash manners as I do pull on the leash, and I tend to want to bark at and chase cars and some other dogs, so please help me with that! I might do best as your only dog. With a proper introduction, I’ve been okay with a few male dogs at the shelter but best no female dogs in your home. I’m doing well with my potty manners on the shelter with a consistent schedule. I had a short break from the MM shelter and stayed at a volunteer’s home. They report that I’m a wonderful houseguest, and I had no “accidents”, so you may find me easy to train once I’m in your home as well. Belly rubs are a favorite of mine as are Nyla bones. My latest (adorable) trick is to entertain myself by bouncing and chasing tennis balls all by myself! I’m energetic, friendly and affectionate! I’ve met some kids at the Mostly Mutts shelter, and I really liked them. But, older kids may be best as I’m an active and enthusiastic dog and since I can have negative reactions to some other dogs! Energy level: 7-9. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, spayed and my adoption fee is $275.00.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Hound / Mixed. AN ACTIVE & SWEET FELLOW: 4 years old / Currently 42 lbs. and needs to gain weight Mostly Mutts adoption facility is open Mon-Sat. 11-4pm. Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I’m an active fellow who would love a dog savvy family that will be active with me. I’m affectionate, come when I’m called, love to be petted and really thrive on affection and attention! I’m a major snuggler and love hanging out with my people! I can be a little unsure of new things, so just confidently show me that everything is good and that will help me along. I’m a very slender dog who just doesn’t let myself be concerned about eating a lot, so I may just stay very slim my whole life. My foster has tried lots of things to get me to eat more, but I’m just not concerned with food, except I don’t want to share it with other dogs. My liver enzymes were a little elevated so I’m on an inexpensive liver supplement and will be checked again in November. I've been good with the other dogs in my foster home, which are several, but lately I’ve struggled with some new ones coming in. It could be that I just don’t want to share my people with too many dogs in my home, so I showed some possessiveness of my people and the furniture lately, at times not wanting to share the couch with my people either, so now I’m not allowed on the couch except to sleep at night. My potty manners are very good and I don’t need a crate. Since I love people a lot, I can be a little barky when I’m separated, so I don’t think an apartment/condo type home would be a good fit for me. I would do best in a home where someone is around during the day and/or there is another dog that I love to keep me company. I’m very playful and can entertain myself with toys for a while and do enjoy running around in the yard with my people and a dog friend. I do get excited and jump a bit, so I could use some training on that as well as leash training. Fetch is fun for me and I’ll give you the toy or ball back so you can throw it again. Since I love walks and car rides, I should be easy to find lots of fun things to do together. I look forward to meeting you soon! Older kids, as I’m active, a bit jumpy and a little possessive. Energy level: 5-7. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, neutered and my adoption fee is $275.00.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. A NICE LITTLE LAP DOG: 6 years old / 10 lbs. Mostly Mutts adoption facility is open Mon-Sat. 11-4pm. Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I lost my home due to the birth of a child. I don’t know why I had to go, but maybe they ran out of time for me. So, I’m looking for a family that will commit to loving me for the rest of my life and I’ll do the same! I’m a sweet guy who loves being held by the nice volunteers, and some say I’m a total lap dog. If you sit down, I’ll jump in your lap for a snuggle. At first I was frightened, but once I realized I was in a safe place, both at the MM shelter and in my foster home, my sweet nature shined through. I am a very small dog, so in some situations, I get a little nervous and since I can't talk, I growl to let people know that I am uncomfortable. You’ll just have to understand this about me. I would be happiest in a home where my people listen to me and respond appropriately, so I feel safe. I am protective of my people and will bark to alert you to visitors, the mailman, delivery guy, pretty much anyone who comes around. I like kids who go slow with me and respect my size and personality. No young kids, please. I’ve had good potty manners with only a few accidents so far, so once I get into my new home’s routine, hopefully I’ll be good to go! I’m very good on a leash walking with you and I seem pretty comfortable with new people, once I know I’m in a safe home. I like being in my crate when I need some downtime—it’s my safe place. I know “come”, “sit”, “stay”, “high 5”, “down”, “quiet”, “place” and “leave it”—I’m so smart! I do well with calm dogs, but I’m not very playful, so if you have another dog in your home, we’ll need to meet to see if we can be buddies. I like the large, female dog in my foster home, and we do well on walks together. I did try to chase a motorcycle that passed by and I’ll do the same with bicycles, so keep a hold of my leash please. Actually, you may want to double up and use a slip leash on me, so there’s not chance I can slip out of my collar. Perhaps a harness would be the very best choice for me while on walks. Energy level: 4-6. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, neutered and my adoption fee is $275.00.

Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I’m a very puppyish young dog who is sweet, loves attention, belly rubs and lot of playing! It appears that I was terribly neglected, left in a crate a lot and malnourished as a puppy. As a result, I have a funny little walk, and after x-rays the vet could see some abnormalities in some growth plates and joints. (just ask for details about that if you’re interested in making me a part of your family) I don’t let it get me down though, as I’m a lively and happy dog! Think of me as a young puppy who is ready for training as I missed out on all the normal training folks do with their puppies, so my manners do need some work. I’m very curious and interested in new things and like being active and alert. I do okay in a crate, but please make sure it’s a large size, with plenty of room for me to move around and lots of dog toys to chew on I love to chew and adore any kind of durable chew toys or squeaky toys. Please provide me with lots of appropriate toys or I will likely find something inappropriate to chew on. I’m easy to correct and I’ll just need consistency and positive reinforcement. I love to play with dogs, so if you have one let’s meet to see if we can be great friends, especially if they are young and energetic like me! I come when called, will give you kisses so you know you’re loved. I love going for walks but do need leash training—I pull quite a bit, but MM can give you tips on how to correct that. I’ve only had a few potty accidents on the shelter schedule and only one in my temporary foster home, so hopefully, I’ll finish learning that quickly. I do know “sit” and learning “stay”—you can teach me lots more. I may develop arthritis earlier than some dogs but starting me on Glucosamine now is a good idea and it’s very inexpensive. I can manage stairs—I sort of bunny hop up and down as I go, and it doesn’t bother me. I’m looking forward to having a great family that will make up for my tough start to life, and one that will meet all my needs, train me and always love me! Older kids as I am very puppy mouthy and missed out on some training. Energy level: 6-8. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, spayed and my adoption fee is $275.00.

Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I’m one fun and active puppy who can’t wait to find my forever family! I can be nervous with new people, and it may take me a while to warm up and trust you. I like to be petted, especially on the chest, once I feel comfortable with you, but I am not super snuggly. My foster mom says I’m a really good boy—I’m in my own world sometimes, a little Wyatt world! I love playing with friendly dogs, this is when I am most comfortable and the happiest, so I MUST have a friendly, playful dog in the home. Please have lots of toys for me to chew on—especially sturdy ones as I like to de-stuff soft toys, and chew up softer plastic ones into pieces. Chasing, tug, playing "keep away" and wrestling are so much fun! I am fairly quiet although I will bark now and then to alert you to strangers nearby. A home with older kids is best for me due to my high energy level and the fact I need people to be patient with me, so I won't get more nervous. I’m very treat-motivated, so this will be great for my training! I never have accidents in my crate, and sleep quietly through the entire night. I am still in my puppy chewing stage so should not be left unsupervised if shoes or other non-toy objects are around as I may chew if you're not watching. I haven't been left too long alone out my crate, so not sure if I'm totally housetrained or not, but I have had no accidents inside the house in almost 3 months - so I seem to be mostly housetrained. I understand "no" and will "sit" when asked before going in or out, or before being fed or given a treat. I'm working on "stay." I love all walks; I will pull to start off but then I'll walk nicely on the leash without pulling after I've had a few minutes to warm up and get past the first few minutes of excitement. I'd probably be a good hiking companion. I need very calm and gentle training, by a very patient, loving family who will be consistent with me. I will sleep in my crate with a pile of fleece blankets inside - I still like to chew the stuffing out of dog beds but I don't tear up blankets. Or, I’m VERY happy to sleep in a bed with you and burrow under the covers....all night long without any accidents. I need to have someone who is home a lot during the day to help me feel secure and for frequent let-outs to potty. I definitely need a big fenced-in yard and a playful dog friend to burn off of all my puppy energy! I like to escape doors and gates if you’re not paying attention, so please be cautious. I’m very cute, very sweet, but often have a worried look on my face...unless I am playing with a doggie friend that is, then I look happy! With some time and gentle training and just the right home and family I’ll grow into a fantastic adult dog that you will be proud of! Energy level: 6-8. I'm neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on my vaccinations. My adoption fee is $275.00.

When I came to MM’s my hair and skin was a bit or a mess, I had mats, thin spots and some itchy skin. I clearly hadn’t been well cared for but look at me now! I’m a cutie with my new haircut and my thin fur is coming back and my skin is healing well. I’m a shy but sweet guy who is coming out out of my shell in my foster home—they are taking great care of me! There are times that I’m uncomfortable with some people, perhaps they scare me, I’m not real sure, but I’ll give a little growl or show my teeth a bit. But mostly, I’m a friendly guy who comes when called and enjoys your company. I have liked the other dogs and cats I met in my foster home, and it would be nice to have a buddy in my new home! My potty manners have been very good in my foster home, and I’ll do my best to be a good boy in your home as well. I don’t like being picked up by new people, though my foster mom can pick me up now that I feel more comfortable and secure with her. So, a home with much older kids who will follow the rules will be best for me. A low-key and calm type environment would be great for me, perhaps with you! Energy level: 4-6. Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. I’m a shy but friendly and lovable older girl who has lost my home due to my dad having to travel a lot and not having anyone to help care for me. I’m sad about that, but I know there’s a great family out there who I’ll love and will love me too! I’m very happy to be in your lap or carried (please use both arms to carry me—I feel more secure that way). I’m an older girl and my vision is not what it used to be, so I hope you don’t mind leaving lots of lights on for me as I see much better in bright or sunny environments! Since I’m not seeing as well now, I am a little wary of other dogs. I’d prefer they respect my “personal space”. I love to stretch out on the couch with my blanket and have a person to snuggle with. My foster mom reports I’m doing well with potty training, yay for me! When they leave, they put in the kitchen with a baby gate and a blanket, and I’m a good girl. I’m great on the leash and love short walks and I do tend to bark at strangers that I see in the distance. Once they are close to me, I don’t consider them strangers any longer and am friendly. Silly me! I’d prefer that you don’t pick me up—just a quirk I have. My foster mom says that I’m sweet, snuggly and affectionate. But, I’m still getting used to all the recent changes in my life and will need time to relax and feel confident, so just be patient with me. I do shake when I’m nervous, but I’ll stop once I’m feeling safe and secure. Older kids as I’m small and older myself and little kids make me nervous. Energy level: 4-6. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, spayed and my adoption fee is $100.00.

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Lhasa Apso / Mixed. LOOKING FOR MY ANGEL: 8 years old / 18 lbs. Mostly Mutts adoption facility is open Mon-Sat. 11-4pm. Some of us are in foster homes so please call 770-272-6888 1st to find out if I’m available to meet during the week. Before coming to Mostly Mutts I lived a very neglectful life. I’m happy that I was rescued and am getting great care now! I’m deaf due to the neglect, but I’m used to it & am comfortable with my loss of hearing. I had surgery to remove my left ear canal as it was very damaged. I love to follow my people around throughout the day, so I’m looking for a family with a stay at home member who wants a nice companion. I’m not a dog to be carried or a big lap dog, but if you have a blanket in your lap on the couch, I just may curl up in it. I’m content to camp out at your feet on a nice blanket or just be close to you on the floor. I shouldn’t live in an apartment/condo type home though as I bark when I’m left or don’t know where you are in the home. I’m very good with all the different dogs & kitty cats I’ve met (there have been many) and I live with 2 dogs and a cat in my foster home now. I’m a laid back guy who also likes to play a little bit with other dogs which is quite cute, and my favorite thing is when my foster family rubs my ears as it feels so good! I’m very good on a leash with no pulling & I enjoy going for short walks with my people or just out to potty and back, whatever you like. My eyes are a bit dry too, so I get daily, very inexpensive eye drops. I don’t love them, but my foster mom can show you what works best for putting them in. I had my teeth cleaned, and lots were pulled so my mouth is feeling great too. I have some ongoing allergies and eat Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein food and that really helps. I don’t eat a lot either since I’m a smaller dog, so it’s not expensive to feed me. My potty manners are good on a very regular schedule too, although not perfect. I’m not crated in my foster home, but I do well in the kitchen while my people are away although I may sing a song or two. I sleep well in a doggie bed next to my people’s bed at night. I have a little temperamental side and may protest if I’m tired and it’s time to go outside or up to bed by trying to snap, but just put a leash on me and I’ll comply. Teens and older please since I have that temperamental side at times. I’m looking for a wonderful patient family that won’t mind my little quirks. Energy level: 3–5. I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped, neutered & my adoption fee is $100.00.
