Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue is an all-volunteer-based Rescue. We have no shelter, so all the dogs in our rescue live in the homes of our fosters until they are adopted. The number of dogs we can rescue is only limited by the number of fosters we have available. Would you be willing to open your heart and home to a dog who needs your help? It takes some time and commitment, but it can be a very rewarding experience to know you helped to save a life. All veterinary and grooming expenses are covered by Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue. If you are interested and would like to learn more, please contact us at info@nebraskanokill.org. Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue needs more fosters, so please add fostering to your sooner, rather than later, bucket list. Thank you!

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Lincoln, NE
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Rico had a very rough start to his young life. He was put in an attic and left alone for days at a time. He was extremely thin and had sores on his body from living in his own waste. When his situation was known, his owner was convinced to give him up, but then his new owner lost his home and was not able to find a place he could take Rico. In spite of all of this, Rico is a very friendly Pit Bull who enjoys playing fetch in the yard and spending time with people. He tolerates most other dogs, but will do best as an only dog. He knows his basic commands and walks well on a leash. He has been trained by Good Decisions Dog Training and you can watch his training videos on their Facebook page and ours. He was given structure and boundaries during his training and this lifestyle needs to continue is his new home to maintain his good behavior. Rico weighs about 60 lbs. and his DOB is Aug. 19, 2015. He is neutered, microchipped and updated on all of his vaccinations. He is also on a heartworm preventive. This boy loves to be around people and will snuggle up for petting when given the opportunity. He is learning household etiquette; what is and is not allowed and also that his “bathroom” is outside. He has made good progress in all areas. Rico is not food or toy aggressive and has been good around older children. His ideal home would have a safe fenced yard and active owners who will continue his training and make him part of the family. If you are interested in meeting Rico, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Suggested adoption donation: $250.00

      Breed: Labrador Retriever
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Lincoln, NE
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). Sophie is a special needs senior looking for her forever home. Her issue is that she has hip dysplasia, but she still gets around okay and with regular medication, should do well. Her ears were recently treated for a yeast infection and we believe we can get this cleared up. Sophie is house-trained and crate-trained and she knows several basic commands. She hasn’t been around cats, but will chase squirrels. She enjoys the company of people of all sizes, but children who are school age are preferred. She has been good with small dogs and hasn’t spent much time around larger dogs, so proper introductions would be needed. When she was younger, she used to jump a 3 ft. fence, but may not now with her hip issue. She is a loyal and affectionate dog who loves petting and just hanging out where ever her person is. She walks okay on a leash and enjoys going for walks. Sophie is not protective of her food or toys and will be current on vaccinations, microchipped and tested for heartworms before going to her forever home. Sophie weighs about 70 lbs. and is 8-9 years old, spayed and hoping there is a family willing to let her live out her life with them. If you can open your heart and home for Sophie, please complete an application at www.NebraskaNoKill.org. If you would like to meet this girl, please contact infp@nebraskanokill.org. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Golden Retriever (short coat). Rosco and Daisy(please check out her entry!!) are Lab/Golden Retriever mix 7 year old siblings who are looking for their forever home . Ideally, they would be adopted as a pair, because they have been together their entire lives. Both dogs are very friendly to people of all sizes and they are house trained. They don’t do well around other dogs or cats, so they should go to a home where they are only dogs for now. Neither is protective of food or toys and they know a few commands. Rosco is a medium energy dog who weighs in at 80 lbs. and Daisy is a lower energy dog who weighs 70 lbs. Rosco is more athletic and loves to play fetch. He is capable of jumping a 4 ft. fence, so 6 ft. is recommended. Daisy is a very loving dog who prefers getting a belly rub to chasing a ball. Breed: Miniature Pinscher
      Sex: Female Female

      Location: Lincoln, NE
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher (short coat). Say "HELLO!" to Cali. This mini Pittie has the cutest white collar and bib with four white feet to match! She was spayed on the 20 th of September, has all her vaccinations and is microchipped. Cali plays a bit rough for some dogs, so proper introductions and supervision is needed. We don’t recommend her going to a home with small dogs and cats are an unknown at this time. Previous owner said she is good with children and we suggest that they be of school age. She knows a few of her basic commands and is mostly house-trained. She is also trained to a crate. Cali would love a home with a fenced yard where she could play and burn off her energy. Since we’ve had her, she has only been around 6 ft. fencing, but we don’t think she would jump a 4 ft. one. After she exercises, she is content to lay down and nap. She enjoys petting and also exploring when outside. Cali does pull when on a leash, but is learning to walk properly. She enjoys going for car rides, hasn’t torn up her bedding and is not a barker. This sweetie was born on October 10 th , 2015 and is a very sturdy 46 lbs. She is looking for a family who will continue her training and include her in their daily activities. She's a happy dog with a great attitude and will be a wonderful addition for someone’s family. If you are interested in meeting Cali, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Sex: Female Female

      Location: Lincoln, NE
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This brindle beauty is Ruby who was found as a stray, full of milk, but no puppies. Her ears have been cropped by someone who had no idea what they were doing, so she did not come from a good home. One would think that Ruby would be angry and full of mistrust, but quite the contrary! Ruby LOVES adults, kids, other dogs and cats!! Ruby is protective of her family and will intervene if she thinks someone is in danger. Because of this, Ruby should not go to a home where children playing loudly or screaming as that could be misinterpreted as one of them being in danger. She has some kennel anxiety but she is working through that with Good Decisions Dog Training. Ruby is current on her vaccinations, she is heartworm negative and house-trained. She walks well on a leash and knows her basic commands. Ruby is a smart and affectionate dog who just wants a family to love her and keep her safe and healthy. Her estimated DOB is May of 2011 and she weighs about 52 lbs. She would enjoy a home with a fenced yard and a family who will include her in their daily lives. If you'd like this sweetie to be a part of your family contact Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue! If you would like to meet Ruby, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Lincoln, NE
Posted Breed: Newfoundland Dog / Mixed (long coat). Moose is an 8 yr. old Newfoundland mix who has had a bad run of luck. He ended up in a crowded shelter and was scheduled to be euthanized. Moose was underweight, his fur was matted, his toenails were over grown and he had tapeworms… but he also had a sparkle in his eyes and a friendly smile! Unfortunately, he also tested positive for heartworms when we took him for an exam, microchipping and vaccination update. His eyes are perfectly clear and look like the eyes of a puppy and not the senior he is. We’re about to start his treatments and are hopeful that he will come through it well. We’re still working on putting some weight on him, because at 65 lbs., he is on the thin side. He is house-trained and crate trained and gets along with other dogs his size. He hasn’t been around small dogs or cats since we’ve had him, but he can be tested. He is neutered, likes children and isn’t protective of his food or toys. He stays off of the furniture and has a gentle soul. He isn’t high energy, but he does like to play if it isn’t too hot outside. He walks okay on a leash and enjoys a nice stroll where he can wander and sniff. This boy needs a home who will take care of him after he recovers from his heartworm treatment. He would love a fenced yard and a family who will be as loyal to him as he will be to them. If you are interested in Moose, please contact nebraskanokill.org. Suggested adoption donation is $150.00.

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Lincoln, NE
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Look up the word “awesome” and you’ll probably find Levi’s picture there. That’s the first word his foster used to describe him… then came funny, smart and a great cuddler. This friendly boy came from a shelter in a BSL town where his time was up. Levi is only a year old and because he may have some Pit Bull in him, he was about to lose his life! Levi is friendly to all people and gets along great with other dogs. He hasn’t met a cat on our watch yet, but will be cat tested if needed. He is young, weighs about 35 lbs., and has lots of energy, so he is looking for a home with a fenced yard and someone to play with. Levi is a fast learner and he knows a few of his basic commands and is working on learning more, including improving his leash skills. Levi enjoys his training sessions and wants to please his person, so we expect him to be a wonderful family pet. He is house-trained and will go to the door when he needs to go out. He is very comfortable in his crate and likes to take his naps there. Levi is not toy or food aggressive and he loves to play with other dogs. He can play a little rough, so we suggest dogs his size or larger who don’t mind his bunny hopping around them. When in the house, Levi likes to keep an eye on his foster to make sure he isn’t missing out on anything. He enjoys sitting by her side and snuggling up for some petting when ever he can, but he isn’t overly pushy about it. If you are looking for an awesome dog and are willing to continue his training, Levi could be the one for you. If you are interested in meeting this handsome boy, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Suggested adoption donation: $250.00

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Chow Chow / Mixed (short coat). You don’t know Jack, but you could! Jack is an almost 6-year old, 53 pound German Shepherd/ Chow mix who is looking for his forever home. His family was moving to a place without a fence and had a change in jobs, so they felt they were no longer a good home for him. Jack enjoys the company of people once he’s had a chance to sniff and meet them and he is okay with other dogs, but not cats. He knows his basic commands and is house-trained, but not crate trained. He has not been destructive in the home when left loose. He pulls some when he starts out on his leash, but walks well once the initial excitement has passed. Jack will be protective of his family and home and will bark at strangers, but he backs off and quiets down when told to. He enjoys sitting near his people and likes to be petted. He is not protective of his regular kibble or toys, but may guard a rawhide. Jack is current on his vaccinations, microchipped and neutered. He is an inside dog who appreciates a nice soft bed to lay on. Jack wants a home with a fenced yard and a family who will include him in their daily activities. He would prefer to be an only dog and would do best in a home without young children. This handsome boy has a lot of love to give to a family who will love him back. Squeakers

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Lhasa Apso
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Lincoln, NE
Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso (medium coat). Squeakers almost didn’t make it. This Lhasa Apso was being starved and weighed only 8 lbs. when he was turned in to a shelter. His hair was matted and he was so weak, he wasn’t even able to walk for 3 days while the shelter tried to get him the nourishment he so badly needed. After several weeks of regular meals and medical care, he was healthy enough to be neutered. Squeakers is now current on all of his vaccinations and back to being a healthier weight of about 16 lbs. (18 lbs. would be ideal weight), but he is protective of his food. He will take treats nicely, but guards his food dish, so he either needs to be left alone while eating or we will provide training to change the behavior in his new home. Squeakers is also house trained and very affectionate to those he trusts. He is cautious of strangers who approach him quickly, but usually goes to them if they ignore him. His estimated birth date is 5/2/2009. He loves to sit on your lap for petting or just to take a nap while you lounge and watch TV. Squeakers enjoys walks and does okay with other dogs his size, but would do best as an only dog in a home without children. With cats, sometimes he ignores them and sometimes he barks at them, so we wouldn't recommend he be left alone in a home with a cat. He does not like getting bathed, so professional grooming is recommended with a warning that he may nip. Squeakers has had a rough few years and now, as a senior, he is ready for a home life that will show him the love and attention he deserves with an owner who provides structure and leadership. If you are looking for a loyal companion who desperately needs a good home and someone to love him, then Squeakers could be the one for you. If you would like to meet Squeakers, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Suggested adoption donation: $150.00
