Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue is an all-volunteer-based Rescue. We have no shelter, so all the dogs in our rescue live in the homes of our fosters until they are adopted. The number of dogs we can rescue is only limited by the number of fosters we have available. Would you be willing to open your heart and home to a dog who needs your help? It takes some time and commitment, but it can be a very rewarding experience to know you helped to save a life. All veterinary and grooming expenses are covered by Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue. If you are interested and would like to learn more, please contact us at info@nebraskanokill.org. Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue needs more fosters, so please add fostering to your sooner, rather than later, bucket list. Thank you!

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Is it possible you have a home in need of a dog? Well, Duke is the one for you. Mr. Duke has done amazingly well fitting in with the 2 kids and 2 other dogs at his foster home - things can get pretty loud and crazy around there and he takes everything in stride. He has never had an accident in the house and does fantastic with his kennel - even hangs out in there without prompting. He doesn’t get on the couch or bed, but cuddle if you’d let him, he is so soft - you have to feel to believe it! He loves his ears and jaw scratched, and will quickly offer up his belly for some love too. Other than his grey hairs, you would never guess that he is 11 yrs old. He loves playing with the female dog in the house and gets along just fine with the other male pup. This dog has a HUGE personality. He is constantly rearranging the remotes and socks of the household, loves hanging out in the kitchen while dinner is being made and just enjoys being outside watching and sniffing everything, although he will bark when he’s bored or ready to come inside. Duke of Hazzard is very food driven and has a couple puppy habits (i.e. taking food from the counter and not wanting to come in from outside ) which can be easily managed with consistent training and time. He is very opportunistic when it comes to escaping, so a second barrier would be a great idea or at least precaution with open doors. He would love being in a home with another dog that he could run around with for 3-5 minutes and then sleep for the rest of the day. He gets along get with kids, as he has always been around them, though he is best with school aged children as the littles tend to be a little rough, although he is VERY VERY patient with the toddler in the foster home This lovely boy is ready for his next adventure. If you want a dog who won’t take much to get used to your home and is pretty much move-in ready, fill out an application! If you are interested in meeting Duke, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Suggested adoption donation: $150.00

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Anakan was rescued by a wonderful lady from a bad situation in Manhatten, Kansas. Once she got him home, she realized she did not have the funds to give him all the care he needed. So she called NNKCR. Anakan, a lab mix, is now 9 months old. He is neutered and has received all necessary shots, a micro chip, heartworm medicine, etc. He is a delightful bundle of PUPPY! He gets along well with small dogs and school age and older children. His demeanor around cats in unknown. Currently, 40 lbs, we expect he will get bigger as the months go by. As you can see from his picture, he loves his new found toy ball! His name should be HAPPY as he is just delightful. He will be learning to walk on a leash and some basic commands. He would require a sturdy 6-foot fence. If you are interested in meeting Anakan, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org Suggested adoption fee: $250.00

      Zade

      rescue
      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Zade is a 3 year old German Shepherd who weighs in at about 90 lbs. He is in need of a new home; foster or permanent. He is obedience trained and knows his commands and he walks great on a leash and enjoys 1- 1 ½ miles walks a few times a week. He gets along with other dogs and with cats who are comfortable being around dogs. He is cautious of new people and needs time to get to know them. Adopting this dog will require several meetings with him and at least to start with, Zade will be muzzled. Once Zade is comfortable with someone, he will be protective of them, so it is important that strangers not come onto the property unannounced or walk up to pet him if he’s on a walk. Zade will require an experienced handler to ensure that he is not put into any situations where he believes he or his family are threatened. He is current on vaccinations and heartworm negative. Zade is not a destructive chewer and has not had issues being allowed to roam free in the home. Zade would need to be crated before visitors enter his home. He enjoys going for car rides, playing with his toys and being in the company of his family. Zade’s ideal home would be with a quiet family who will take him for walks/ runs and include him in their daily activities. He would very much like to have a fenced yard and someone to play with. His favorite game is Frisbee. We do not recommend that Zade be in a home with children or teens who are likely to have friends who drop by to visit. Note: Zade was recently treated for a hematoma in his left ear, so for the time being, that ear flops over. If you are interested in meeting Zane, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org Suggested adoption donation: $250.00
