Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue is an all-volunteer-based Rescue. We have no shelter, so all the dogs in our rescue live in the homes of our fosters until they are adopted. The number of dogs we can rescue is only limited by the number of fosters we have available. Would you be willing to open your heart and home to a dog who needs your help? It takes some time and commitment, but it can be a very rewarding experience to know you helped to save a life. All veterinary and grooming expenses are covered by Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue. If you are interested and would like to learn more, please contact us at info@nebraskanokill.org. Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue needs more fosters, so please add fostering to your sooner, rather than later, bucket list. Thank you!

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

    • American Pit Bull Terrier Dog For Adoption in Lincoln, NE, USA

      Leo

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Leo is very sweet and curious Pit Bull mix who weighs about 60 lbs. and was born in August of 2016. He has had a difficult start, but things are looking up for him now. Leo has not known the love that he deserves, so he is a little skittish around men, but does well with most women, children, dogs and cats. He was crated for days at a time, so he was somewhat resisted returning to his crate in the beginning. Leo is learning that the crate is not a punishment and it’s his safe place to relax…and get a treat! Leo loves to go for walks and is also working on leash etiquette. He understands some of his basic commands, he is house-trained, neutered and current on his vaccinations. He is also micro-chipped and has received the 6 month heartworm prevention vaccine. Getting out, going for walks, being in a home and part of a family are the simple things that make him a happy dog. He cautiously checks out anything new and then he’s okay with it. When you are locked in a crate for most of your life, there are a lot of new things to explore. Leo is a lower energy dog. who has not been protective of his food or toys. Leo’s ideal home would be with a family who will continue to build his confidence, train him on the things he doesn’t know and show him the love he needs. Leo would enjoy someone to play with and a fenced yard to play in. If you are interested in meeting Leo, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org Suggested adoption donation: $250.00

      Zade

      rescue
      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Zade is a 3 year old German Shepherd who weighs in at a light 80 lbs. He is in need of a new home; foster or permanent. He is obedience trained and knows his commands. He walks great on a leash and enjoys 1- 1 ½ miles walks a few times a week. He gets along with other dogs and with cats who are comfortable being around dogs. We were told he is good with children, but have not seen him around toddlers or young children. We recommend that children be school age or teens, so there is no hair pulling or stumbling on him. He has not been well socialized and does not trust strangers, so he is scheduled for training to learn to accept people and become comfortable around people he doesn't know. Zade is neutered, current on vaccinations and heartworm negative. He has not been crated since he was a puppy, but is not a chewer and has not been destructive in the home. Zade will be getting refresher crate training along with his new social skills. He enjoys going for car rides, playing with his toys and being in the company of his family. His favorite game to play is Frisbee and he is very good about bringing it back for another throw. Zade’s ideal home would be with an active family who will take him for walks/ runs and play fetch with him. His new family must also follow through with his training protocol to ensure that he behaves well around strangers. He will be protective of his family, but must not decide on his own if they need protecting. We would like him go to a home with a fenced yard. Note: Zade was recently treated for a hematoma in his left ear, so at least for now, that ear flops over. If you are interested in meeting Zane, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org Suggested adoption donation: $250.00

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Say "HELLO!" to Cali. This mini Pittie has the cutest white collar and bib with four white feet to match! She was spayed on the 20 th of September, has all her vaccinations and is microchipped. Cali plays a bit rough for some dogs, so proper introductions and supervision is needed. We don’t recommend her going to a home with small dogs and cats are an unknown at this time. Previous owner said she is good with children and we suggest that they be of school age. She knows a few of her basic commands and is mostly house-trained. She is also trained to a crate. Cali would love a home with a fenced yard where she could play and burn off her energy. Since we’ve had her, she has only been around 6 ft. fencing, but we don’t think she would jump a 4 ft. one. After she exercises, she is content to lay down and nap. She enjoys petting and also exploring when outside. Cali does pull when on a leash, but is learning to walk properly. She enjoys going for car rides, hasn’t torn up her bedding and is not a barker. This sweetie was born on October 10 th , 2015 and is a very sturdy 46 lbs. She is looking for a family who will continue her training and include her in their daily activities. She's a happy dog with a great attitude and will be a wonderful addition for someone’s family. If you are interested in meeting Cali, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Jax

      rescue
      Breed: Havanese-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Havanese / Mixed (medium coat). Jax is a Havanese mix who is looking for a new home because his previous owner was not able to spend enough time with him. Jax has suffered from allergies and treatments were not consistent. His itchy skin has improved with recent treatments and he will need to continue the current plan to keep it under control. Born 9/9/2014 and weighing only 11 lbs., Jax is a playful dog who is good with other dogs, cats and children. He walks well on a leash, knows his basic commands and is friendly to people. Jax is a cuddler too. He loves to bury himself in blankets and really enjoys a soft place to lay down. His ideal home will have a safe yard he can play in and someone who is able to spend time with him. Jax is fine for a few hours alone, but does have some anxiety if he is left alone for an 8 hour work day, so a retired person would be a good fit. His previous owner said Jax was house-trained, but he will need to learn the routine in a new home. Jax will be a very loyal and loving companion for someone who will spend time with him. He would be happy to live with another dog or a cat as a play companion. If you’re looking for a sweet dog and are able to help him keep his allergies under control, Jax would be happy to make your acquaintance. If you are interested in meeting Jax, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Suggested adoption donation: $250.00

    • Lhasa Apso Dog For Adoption in Lincoln, NE, USA

      Squeakers

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Lhasa Apso
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso (medium coat). Squeakers almost didn’t make it. This Lhasa Apso was being starved and weighed only 8 lbs. when he was turned in to a shelter. His hair was matted and he was so weak, he wasn’t even able to walk for 3 days while the shelter tried to get him the nourishment he so badly needed. After several weeks of regular meals and medical care, he was healthy enough to be neutered. Squeakers is now current on all of his vaccinations and back to being a healthier weight of about 16 lbs. (18 lbs. would be ideal weight), but he is protective of his food. He will take treats nicely, but guards his food dish, so he either needs to be left alone while eating or we will provide training to change the behavior in his new home. Squeakers is also house trained and very affectionate to those he trusts. He is cautious of strangers who approach him quickly, but usually goes to them if they ignore him. His estimated birth date is 5/2/2009. He loves to sit on your lap for petting or just to take a nap while you lounge and watch TV. Squeakers enjoys walks and does okay with other dogs his size, but would do best as an only dog in a home without children. With cats, sometimes he ignores them and sometimes he barks at them, so we wouldn't recommend he be left alone in a home with a cat. He does not like getting bathed, so professional grooming is recommended with a warning that he may nip. Squeakers has had a rough few years and now, as a senior, he is ready for a home life that will show him the love and attention he deserves with an owner who provides structure and leadership. If you are looking for a loyal companion who desperately needs a good home and someone to love him, then Squeakers could be the one for you. If you would like to meet Squeakers, please contact info@nebraskanokill.org. Suggested adoption donation: $150.00
