A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Rudy

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Little Rock, AR
Posted Breed: Pointer / Terrier / Mixed. Rudy is a young handsome male that truly embraced our motto and was found wandering in the woods. He wandered into the right rescue and looking for a family of his own. He has been fully vetted and neutered. Rudy’s current family says: Rudy is a high-quality provider of all the professional dog services your family needs. He’s a high energy young man who would be great with an active child or active adults. He’s beautiful when he runs. His breed naturally loves to hunt squirrels, so he is very motivated to explore woods, parks, and trails with you. He now lives in a pack with other dogs, and he’s great with dogs and people. He is neither dominant nor aggressive. He just wants to enjoy life as part of a “family.” He’s very cuddly and loves human attention. He’s not only good on a nature walk, he’s also great at watching TV with you on the couch. He loves petting and human attention as much as he loves running and wrestling with other dogs. He’s never been around cats. A cat who runs might, perhaps, be an issue, but a cat who stands its ground will probably not be an issue. He is very smart and motivated. With a little effort and consistency, he could be trained to do amazing things. Those traits can cause him to be stubborn, sometimes, but he responds well to discipline. If you give him “a job,” he will take to it right away. He’s completely integrated into our family pack, so he sleeps free in the house. It may take several days to reacquaint him with a crate. He has dog-door access to a back yard and is fully dog-door house trained. He’s smart, so it will only take a few days to learn to signal “outside” if you don’t have a dog door, but there will be a learning curve. When fed a good diet he is low-smell and low-shed. He doesn’t need much in the way of brushing or bathing. He’s generally healthy and in great condition. As of March, 2017, we think he is around a year old. He’s a great “medium” size. He’s fully grown for height and length, but he may continue to fill out. A healthy, lean adult weight for him will probably be around 55 pounds. Rudy will be a wonderful companion for your family for as long as he lives. Won’t you give him a chance? Interested in giving Rudy a chance? Location: Little Rock, AR
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Meet Bella! Isn't she beautiful?!? Let me tell you her story. Bella was picked up at a truck stop. A gentleman took her home where...unfortunately she was quickly impregnated by one of his dogs. She gave birth to 10...yes, 10...sweet puppies! She nursed and cared for them. Then she weaned them and they found homes. Just about the time when OOTW shifted their focus to find her a home, they got a call...7 puppies were found, mama had been hit by at car and killed and the puppies needed help. They took in the puppies and brought them to Bella, who cared for them and nursed them like her own. That's right, this sweet girl has cared for 17 puppies since last spring! What a mama! It's her turn to be spoiled and loved! If you are interested in welcoming sweet Bella into your family, go to www.ootwrescue.org and fill out an application. Bella has been spayed & is up to date on her vaccinations. She tested very light positive for heartworms, so she is receiving the slow-kill treatment. OOTW will provide all meds to treat the heartworms until she is heartworm free! For more information about Bella Donna, please contact Susan Neal at daiseymaggie@yahoo.com. Lucky Star

      Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Little Rock, AR
Posted Breed: Hound / Pointer / Mixed. Lucky Star is a wonderful dog! Just listen to what his foster has to say about him! * WONDERFUL with kids (doesn't seem to be bothered or anxious when my toddler screeches or gets wound up). Generally, he's not too bothered by loud noises like the drill or hairdryer. * Vet estimates he's about 1 year old or little less, which surprised us because he's pretty calm for a puppy although he does nip like a puppy. (He hasn't shown any interest in chewing shoes although he is fond of the toilet paper roll!) * Vet says he's definitely a hound mix, and other guess could be lab or pointer. He definitely has a basset hound coloring (white with speckles, dark brown face/ears, few larger brown/black spots) and does bay some when he's outside. * He's very sociable with dogs and people. (The vet also tested him for aggression and didn't get any signs of aggressive behavior, which she said is also consistent with typical hound behavior.) * He's not had any/much training. I've been working with him on sit, off, and kennel. He does very well in his kennel during the day when I'm at work. He's only had two accidents in the house, and one of those was really my fault for not watching when he had gone to the door. (He's not vocal when he needs to go out but will stand by the door.) * He's not leash trained but is picking it up. He's also walked on the double lead with Ruby and did very well. (Have to watch for squirrels because he and Ruby will both take off to chase a squirrel.) * He shares toys and food well with Ruby (she's not as great at sharing), but I try to keep them separated if they have a treat just in case. * He's current on shots because I had him vaccinated at my vet on 12/2. I also started him then on flea/tick and heartworm meds. * He wasn't malnourished and eats well (same dried food I have for Ruby). * He hasn't shown signs of prior abuse and doesn't seem skittish, although he will bay or cry for a bit when we leave. Not sure if he has a little separation anxiety because Ruby probably helps with that. * He's extremely affectionate, and I can say honestly he is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever seen. (I know I shouldn't let him, but he sleeps in the bed with us and also likes to cuddle on the couch.) In the vet's words, he seems like a sweet country dog who just hasn't learned inside manners yet. He sounds like a great boy! All he needs is a family to call his own! He is completely vetted, including neuter & microchip. For more information about Lucky Star, please contact his case manager, Rebecca at rebecca@ meadorsadamslee.com. You will find our adoption applications here: http://ootwrescue.org/adoption.html

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Little Rock, AR
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed. Nicholas (Nick for short), is a very handsome 10 - 12 month old male Shepherd mix who weighs in at 45 pounds. He's a nice-size dog who will grow to be a little heavier as he matures, probably topping out at 50 - 55 pounds. Nick came into our program after he and his sister, Nelly, also for adoption, were abandoned by their owners, left in the fenced back yard to fend for themselves when the owners moved away. Fortunately, they were spotted by some kind people who began caring for them until they could get into the Out of the Woods program. Now in foster care, Nick is blossoming into the great dog he was destined to be. He is a very smart boy but has a short attention span ... that's the puppy in him. He still has plenty of puppy energy, but does contain himself when he needs to. He has fallen in love with his foster parents and wants to stay close to them ... probably due to his insecure life he had before arriving into the program, but that is already improving. Nick is in a foster home with several other dogs of all shapes and sizes and does well with them all. He lives in a home with a doggie door and is 90% house trained using the doggie door and he's so smart, he will be trained by the time he is adopted ... he is brand new into foster care. He will need a fenced back yard for safe playtime. He is terrified of a crate ... we are not sure why that is and it could probably be worked on to make it more relaxing for him. After playtime with all his siblings, Nick is ready to cuddle on the sofa or in your bed ... he's quite the snuggle bug! Nick has been fully vetted (neuter, microchip, wormed, rabies and yearly shots). He is ready to go and is going to make some family a wonderful pet! Adoption fee for Nick is $150. To be considered to adopt this handsome boy, start with our Adoption Application.
