A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Little Rock, AR
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Meet Sissy Sissy is an adult AR brown dog, DOB estimated to be 7/2013. Sissy had a rough start before coming into Out of the Woods. Sissy had been shot in the neck and was injured and scared. Sissy has done well with her foster and her foster siblings. She needs to warm up to both dogs and people. Sissy is also heart worm positive and is being treated for the heart worms which we will continue after she is adopted if needed. Sissy would do well with a canine sibling who is not overly ambitious to be in her face and is not an alpha dog. She will easily adapt but needs to be monitored and supervised for the first several days. Sissy has been with small children for a short time and did well. She was monitored the entire time. She is leery of new people but does well when boarded. Sissy is territorial in her own house and yard. She really needs someone who is patient and will allow her to come around in her time. She loves to play and does well on a leash. She rides well in the car and on hikes. She must have a privacy fenced yard when not on a leash as she can leap like a deer over in no time. Once she trust you, she will be your protector and stay by your side. Sissy is UTD on everything, she is house trained and crate trained. If you are interested in Sissy, please head over to our website and put in an adoption application. www.ootwrescue.org Adoption_Application If you have questions about Sissy, please contact Stephanie her case manager and foster mom at foster4ootwrescue@gmail.com Sissy's adoption fee is $150 to help with the cost of her vetting and care. Location: Little Rock, AR
Posted Breed: Terrier. Zada came into the OOTW program, along with two siblings from a terrible situation in Malvern where all three puppies were trapped in a drainage pipe under the street. The owner of the puppies knew they were there, but she couldn't get them out, so "Oh, well ... " Fortunately a caring rescuer came by and found them and although it took hours, she retrieved all of them and then contacted OOTW. Because of her unusual beauty, Zada was adopted very quickly. Unfortunately, she has come back to us due to no fault of her own. Zada is a bit shy, as all of the puppies were from that litter, but once she has a chance to warm up, does fine. She gets along well with other dogs, and seems to really like the bigger dogs at the boarding facility where she is presently staying. She weighs about 35 pounds and is truly a perfect size. Zada has been fully vetted and is ready to go. Her adoption fee is $150, which will help to offset some of her vetting. If you would like to adopt this brindled beauty, please start with our Adoption Application. Here is the link: https://us6.sheltermanager.com/service?account=tz1092&method=online_form_html&formid=2 If you should have questions about Zada, please contact Case Coordinator, Georgia, at georgiagriffis@sbcglobal.net You will find our adoption applications here: http://ootwrescue.org/adoption.html

      Trimmy

      rescue
Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Pembroke Welsh Corgi Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Little Rock, AR
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Corgi / Mixed. Trimmy was anything but when we picked her up-- she was ready to pop with 11 beautiful black/tan pups-- but we knew she would regain her girlish figure once her mommying was done. The pups are 13 weeks old, and Trimmy is once again svelte at about 46 lbs. This sweet girl is probably just about a year old. She appears to be a German Shepherd donkey mix. Just joshin. But those ears had to come from somewhere! Pharoah hound? Basenji? Corgi? Trimmy is sweet-tempered and playful. When the pups were still nursing, she would tear out the back door and lap the backyard after they'd had their fill. Now that they are old enough to rough-house, Trimmy plays with them until they drop. She has the stamina, but she's not one of those insanely focused dogs who just can't stop working/playing-- she'll grab a toy to interest the pups in a game of chase, but will easily let it fall. She gets along well with young and old, male and female, dog and human. She barks at cats so we’re not sure she’d be a great match for a home with one, but it’s possible that she just needs exposure and direction. She hasn’t had much experience on a leash yet, but she’s a fast learner so we don’t anticipate any problems.Trimmy is spayed and up-to-date on shots. Those of her pups remaining available for adoption are also listed on this web site: Dark Star, Dimer, Essie, Sundog, and Thunderbird. To apply for Trimmy, please submit an application via Out of the Woods Rescue: https://sheltermanager.com/service/asmservice?account=tz1092&method=online_form_html&formid=2 You will find our adoption applications here: http://ootwrescue.org/adoption.html

He is very shy, but we believe once he's in a home, he will settle in if given a little time. Corkey is around 9 years old and seems to be in good health, however, he is heartworm positive. We are treating Corkey for heartworms using the slow-kill method and OOTW will pay for this treatment and have Corkey re-tested at the end of treatment to make sure those nasty things are gone! ;) Corkey is crate trained and doggie door trained. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Dunk is a sweet German Shepherd mix who was found dumped in a local neighborhood. The vet thinks he's about 10 months old, and in good health. Here are some facts about Dunk: - Fully house trained! - Loves other dogs, really wants to meet them and play. - Weighs 50 lbs now, will likely fill out some more before he is full-grown. - Still a teenager with some puppy qualities. He is a little mouthy when he plays, but not rough. - Loves being inside and part of the pack. Settles well and snoozes happily at feet. - Knows "sit", "shake", and "wait". He is smart and very trainable. - Can catch treats in the air! - Enjoys watermelon and orange wedges, in addition to many other treats of course - Likes to "talk". He will make funny noises to greet you when you get home or sing along to musical instruments. - He loves to fetch balls and chew on dog toys. He is good about not chewing on things that aren't his. - We are working on crate training and not pulling on the leash while walking. - Deep bark, sounds bigger than he is. - Really sweet, affectionate dog that would be good addition to any household, especially one with another dog he could play with. - He has really nice white socks that contrast with his chocolate - black coat. He's a handsome guy! Dunk is up to date with his vaccinations & he is heartworm negative. He is scheduled for his neuter & microchip.
