Posted Breed: Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). See Bishop's HomepageGo to our official websiteYou can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Bishop was a terrified, hungry, abused, and injured dog when SAR volunteers were finally able to catch him after many failed attempts. An exam by a veterinarian showed a dog that had been badly abused. He was underweight, heartworm positive, and had an embedded harness! Bishop was scared of humans and human contact. He trusted nobody. Bishop's long road of recovery began with emergency surgery to remove the embedded harness. Infection had already set in. After rest, good nutrition, and plenty of antibiotics, Bishop recovered. Next, he had to endure months of heartworm treatment. He came through with flying colors and was eventually given a clean bill of health. Bishop is 3 years old now and is physically completely healed up and healthy! Emotionally, however, he still struggles with trust and is extremely shy when he meets someone new. Strange sounds and objects can scare him, so he will need patience and understanding from his forever family. Once he gets to know you, he quickly bonds with you and stays right by your side! How amazing that he can still be so loyal to humans after all he has been through. Bishop absolutely loves other dogs and finds a great deal of comfort in their presence, so he prefers a family with another dog. He enjoys going to his local doggie daycare and playing with his friends. Bishop is house-trained and loves going for walks. He also enjoys playing in the water and swimming! He is a big boy, weighing 100 pounds, but he is so gentle and affectionate. Bishop needs a loving forever family to continue is rehabilitation and love him unconditionally. Please consider offering him a forever home with all the love and nurturing from a family that he so deserves! *FENCED YARD REQUIRED (no underground/invisible fences) If you are interested in adopting Bishop, please fill out an adoption application from our website.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Mount Airy, NC
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Captain Crunch is a 1 year old Shepherd/Lab mix. He weighs 35.7 pounds at this time. This is a very special boy who is looking for his forever home. He was found with a horrific injury to his leg. We don't know what happened to him but our vet had to amputate his back leg. Captain Crunch is a super sweet guy who wants to give you nothing more than love. He is doing well with his surgery and learning to walk on 3 legs. He needs a home where he will be inside and spoiled rotten. We don't know yet if he is house trained, but he doesn't go potty in his crate. He plays great with all of our other rescue dogs and has a crush on Georgia. We would like for him to have a fenced yard so he can play and exercise his back leg in safety. If you would like to meet Captain Crunch please fill out an application from our website.

      Breed: Collie-German Shepherd Dog Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Mount Airy, NC
Posted Breed: Collie / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (long coat). Jeff is about 2 1/2 years old, he weighs 58.6 pounds. We think he is a Collie/Shepherd mix, but we are welcome to suggestions. This boy was found by a family that had been caring for him for about month. They loved him because he is very friendly, always happy and loved their dog. Unfortunately they couldn't keep him with their family so they called us. Jeff was scared to get in the car, but he did well on the ride to the vet's office. He was also scared at the vet' office, but did calm down when he learned that everyone was kind to him. He was treated for worms, given all his vaccines and heart worm medication, neutered and micro chipped. Jeff was in a foster home for a couple of weeks and the family got him over some of his anxieties, but unfortunately they couldn't keep him. Jeff is house trained, he learned that he could walk through door ways without being harmed but still needs some work. He needs a family that will work with him on being comfortable indoors. He loves other dogs and gets along great with all of our other rescue dogs. We feel he would do better with a dog his size or smaller. Jeff would do best with a fenced yard where he can be safe while playing outside. Please fill out an application if you would like to meet Jeff.

      Dottie

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Mount Airy, NC
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Dottie is a 2 year old purebred Chihuahua. She weighs only 6.7 pounds. This little girl was brought to us after her human mommy couldn't take care of her anymore. She has cancer and asked for us to find her baby a good home. Dottie is absolutely adorable and she was scared to death when we got her. One of our volunteers took her home to foster her and she is doing so much better. Her foster mom can pick her up and give her kisses. Her foster dad can hold her on his lap, but she won't let him pick her up just yet. She will take treats from people, but if anyone tries to pick her up she will try to bite. It didn't take long for her to trust her foster mom so we have no doubt that she will love her new parents just as much. If you would like to meet Dottie please fill out an application from our website. She will need a fenced yard for her safety when she is outdoors.

      Izzy & Zoey

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Mount Airy, NC
Posted Breed: West Highland White Terrier Westie / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (long coat). Izzy is an 8 year old Westie, she is 8 years old. This sweet girl is missing a leg. The other dog is Zoey, she is a Yorkie and she is about 14 years old. Both dogs are current on their shots and just had a recent checkup. Their owner had to move and couldn't take Izzy and Zoey with her. These girls are pretty good dogs, they have been good with their fosters' four dogs and cat. They are house broken but like any dog they need to be taken outside because if they are left inside they will go in the house. They are ok being separated if they have to be, but if there is an elderly couple or someone that is at home often they would be better served because they love being with people. They are not necessarily lap dogs but love to sit on the couch or chair with people. They just like closeness and their foster parents are very busy so they do not get the attention they seek. Please fill out an application from the link below if you would like to meet Izzy & Zoey.

      Breed: Plott Hound-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Mount Airy, NC
Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Mixed (short coat). Big Boy is a 3 year old Plott Hound mix. He was rescued by one of our volunteers from his owner who was going to shoot him. This sweet boy was chained out and not allowed to be a real doggie. He is now house and crate trained, heart worm negative, up to date on shots, neutered and micro chipped. Big Boy does really well with female dogs, he is playful and sits on command. The foster parents do not have children or cats so they don't know how he would do with them. His favorite activity is to relax on the couch with his humans. Big Boy isn't being adopted through SAR, but we are helping his foster parents find potential owners. If you would like to meet him please fill out an application and we will forward it to his current family.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat). Nathaniel is a 2 year old Chihuahua/Yorkie mix. He weighs only 3.3 pounds right now and is underweight. This little guy is not ready for adoption yet but will be soon. He is anemic and has and injury to his leg. Once he is feeling better we will get him his vaccines and have him neutered. It looks like he had a broken leg at one time that wasn't treated and now his little leg is deformed. We will update when we have more medical information on him. We will be looking for a home that doesn't have small children for his safety. We would prefer a fenced yard so that he can potty and play at his leisure. We will also test him with other dogs to see how he does. You can go to our website if you want to fill out an application for him.

      Location: Mount Airy, NC
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Nila is a special little girl. She is a 9 year old Chihuahua and weighs about 8.5 pounds. Nila was brought to us by someone who got her from the owner. She had a lump on her belly that just kept growing and growing. When she was brought to us we thought this was a horrible tumor. What it turned out to be was a huge hernia!! All of her intestines were outside of her body in a large sac. The Dr had to do a very involved surgery to get everything back in its correct place. Nila was spayed during the surgery and is healing nicely now. She just went to a new foster home where she is very happy. She loves playing with the other dogs and getting much needed attention from her foster parents. We haven't tested Nila with kids or cats yet. If you would like to meet her please fill out an application from our website.
