Posted Breed: Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). See Bishop's HomepageGo to our official websiteYou can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Bishop was a terrified, hungry, abused, and injured dog when SAR volunteers were finally able to catch him after many failed attempts. An exam by a veterinarian showed a dog that had been badly abused. He was underweight, heartworm positive, and had an embedded harness! Bishop was scared of humans and human contact. He trusted nobody. Bishop's long road of recovery began with emergency surgery to remove the embedded harness. Infection had already set in. After rest, good nutrition, and plenty of antibiotics, Bishop recovered. Next, he had to endure months of heartworm treatment. He came through with flying colors and was eventually given a clean bill of health. Bishop is 3 years old now and is physically completely healed up and healthy! Emotionally, however, he still struggles with trust and is extremely shy when he meets someone new. Strange sounds and objects can scare him, so he will need patience and understanding from his forever family. Once he gets to know you, he quickly bonds with you and stays right by your side! How amazing that he can still be so loyal to humans after all he has been through. Bishop absolutely loves other dogs and finds a great deal of comfort in their presence, so he prefers a family with another dog. He enjoys going to his local doggie daycare and playing with his friends. Bishop is house-trained and loves going for walks. He also enjoys playing in the water and swimming! He is a big boy, weighing 100 pounds, but he is so gentle and affectionate. Bishop needs a loving forever family to continue is rehabilitation and love him unconditionally. Please consider offering him a forever home with all the love and nurturing from a family that he so deserves! *FENCED YARD REQUIRED (no underground/invisible fences) If you are interested in adopting Bishop, please fill out an adoption application from our website.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Parker

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier (medium coat). Parker is a 2 year old Terrier and he weighs around 20 pounds. This baby was an owner's dog but they didn't have the time to give him the attention he needs. They also had young children and Parker would get nervous with the fast movements of the kids. He would do best in an adult only home. Parker will be going into a foster home next week and we can update with more information about his personality then. He needs a fenced yard for potty and playtime and gets along great with other dogs. Please fill out an application if you would like to meet Parker.

      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian (long coat). Tuffy is a 10 year old Pomeranian, he weighs about 10 pounds. This poor little guy had a rough life and is finally in safe hands. He was covered in fleas and has hair loss on his rear end. He lost his vision in his right eye due to a traumatic injury. We are trying very hard to earn this boy's trust but he will try and bite if you come at him too quickly. Tuffy really needs a home with a very patient family that will give him the time he needs to adjust. We don't know yet if he is house trained or if he gets along with other dogs or cats. He needs an adult home only and a fenced yard is preferred. Please fill out an application if you would like to meet Tuffy.

      Breed: Jack Russell Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Lil Buddy is a 4 year old Jack Russell/Fox Terrier mix, he weighs 15 pounds. These really nice people found him and coaxed him into their back yard. He learned to trust them and would take food from their hands and follow them around but would run if they tried to touch him. We tried to win him over too, but finally had to sedate him to get him to the vet's office. Buddy is in a wonderful foster home and his parents are teaching him how to trust. He plays with toys and loves to run around with his foster brothers and sister. When he is at the pet fair's he will clam up and acts very shy and scared. He will warm up to a new family and show his more playful side with a little time. We feel he would do better in a home with only adults or older children. He must have a fenced yard for potty and playtime. If you are interested in meeting him please fill out an application from our website.

      Breed: Husky-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Husky / Mixed (short coat). Dini is a 4 month old Shepherd/Husky mix. He weighs 29.6 pounds right now and will grow to be a large dog. We got Dini from his human mommy who loved him very much. Unfortunately she is older and has some health issues so she couldn't handle a young dog. Dini looks like a Shepherd, but has the eyes of a husky. He is very energetic because he is young and would love to have a family to keep him busy. He would do great in a home with a fenced yard so he could run and play freely. His mom said he was house trained and did well for her on a harness on his. Please fill out an application if you would like to meet Dini.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Little Ann is a 5 year old Hound/Lab mix. She weighs 65.6 pounds right now and could afford to put on a little more. This sweet girl was found at a store parking lot with her daughter Sandy. The girls were hanging out there for about 3 weeks and no body could catch them. We came on a rainy day with hot dogs in hand and finally got them in our car. Little Ann is very gentle and loving. She takes a couple minutes to warm up to people but can tell when someone is going to be nice to her. She needs a new forever home as an indoor dog with a fenced yard for playtime. Please open your heart and let her in your home. If someone would be willing to adopt her and Sandy we would be so excited but we know that may not be possible. You can fill out an application from our website so you can meet her.

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Nila is a special little girl. She is a 9 year old Chihuahua and weighs about 8.5 pounds. Nila was brought to us by someone who got her from the owner. She had a lump on her belly that just kept growing and growing. When she was brought to us we thought this was a horrible tumor. What it turned out to be was a huge hernia!! All of her intestines were outside of her body in a large sac. The Dr had to do a very involved surgery to get everything back in its correct place. Nila was spayed during the surgery and is healing nicely now. She just went to a new foster home where she is very happy. She loves playing with the other dogs and getting much needed attention from her foster parents. We haven't tested Nila with kids or cats yet. If you would like to meet her please fill out an application from our website.

      rescue
      Breed: Plott Hound-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Mixed (short coat). Big Boy is a 3 year old Plott Hound mix. He was rescued by one of our volunteers from his owner who was going to shoot him. This sweet boy was chained out and not allowed to be a real doggie. He is now house and crate trained, heart worm negative, up to date on shots, neutered and micro chipped. Big Boy does really well with female dogs, he is playful and sits on command. The foster parents do not have children or cats so they don't know how he would do with them. His favorite activity is to relax on the couch with his humans. Big Boy isn't being adopted through SAR, but we are helping his foster parents find potential owners. If you would like to meet him please fill out an application and we will forward it to his current family.
