Posted Breed: Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). See Bishop's HomepageGo to our official websiteYou can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Bishop was a terrified, hungry, abused, and injured dog when SAR volunteers were finally able to catch him after many failed attempts. An exam by a veterinarian showed a dog that had been badly abused. He was underweight, heartworm positive, and had an embedded harness! Bishop was scared of humans and human contact. He trusted nobody. Bishop's long road of recovery began with emergency surgery to remove the embedded harness. Infection had already set in. After rest, good nutrition, and plenty of antibiotics, Bishop recovered. Next, he had to endure months of heartworm treatment. He came through with flying colors and was eventually given a clean bill of health. Bishop is 3 years old now and is physically completely healed up and healthy! Emotionally, however, he still struggles with trust and is extremely shy when he meets someone new. Strange sounds and objects can scare him, so he will need patience and understanding from his forever family. Once he gets to know you, he quickly bonds with you and stays right by your side! How amazing that he can still be so loyal to humans after all he has been through. Bishop absolutely loves other dogs and finds a great deal of comfort in their presence, so he prefers a family with another dog. He enjoys going to his local doggie daycare and playing with his friends. Bishop is house-trained and loves going for walks. He also enjoys playing in the water and swimming! He is a big boy, weighing 100 pounds, but he is so gentle and affectionate. Bishop needs a loving forever family to continue is rehabilitation and love him unconditionally. Please consider offering him a forever home with all the love and nurturing from a family that he so deserves! *FENCED YARD REQUIRED (no underground/invisible fences) If you are interested in adopting Bishop, please fill out an adoption application from our website.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Gerber Daisy (Aka Daisy) is a 2 year old Shepherd mix that only weighs 27 pounds. She is Bentley, the little Chihuahua's sister. Their mother passed away in an accident and we took them into the rescue. Daisy had previously broken her back leg and her mom had it pinned. Unfortunately the pin was in too long and it didn't heal correctly. Our vet is doing everything he can to save her leg, but if he can't it will need to be amputated :( Daisy is a very sweet and happy dog. She loves her brother Bentley but they don't need to be adopted together. Daisy would love to find a foster home until she gets her forever home. If you would like to meet Daisy please fill out an application from our website.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Mixed (short coat). Cherry is 6 years old, 7 pounds and Blossom is 8 years old, 11 pounds. They are sisters and are Italian Greyhound mixes. The smaller sister is Cherry, she is tri color and is very shy. Blossom is larger and she's white with tan on her. Both girls are very sweet and timid. They were released to us by their owner and were not cared for or socialized well. They need a quiet home where they will be comfortable in their surroundings. An adult only home would be better for them right now. Once they get comfortable with you the will show their silly sides. They can be very playful and have those long thin greyhound legs that they run around on. Please fill out an application if you would like to meet these girls. We want to keep them together because they are bonded sisters. Fenced in yard required for their safety.

Posted Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Roosevelt is a 4 year old Chocolate lab mix, he weighs 43.2 pounds right now. This sweet boy was found while one of our volunteers was going house to house helping dog in the cold weather we just had. Roosevelt was very thin and she was worried about his health. The owners signed him over to us so we could get him medical attention. Roosevelt is unfortunately heart worm positive and was full of parasites. We are trying to get some weight on him and then we will start his heart worm treatment. He really could use a foster home or more importantly a forever home so he could recover happily. We will be testing him with other dogs and kids when he is well enough. If you would like to meet Roosevelt please fill out an application from our website.

Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (short coat). Chip is a very special boy. He was found wandering around a neighborhood when he was only 8 weeks old. A vet exam revealed that Chip was both blind and deaf. It is remarkable that he was walking around alone and was not hurt or killed! Chip is now 1 year old. We know that he was born blind and deaf. He has been diagnosed with Merle Ocular Dysgenesis, a congenital disease which unfortunately has no treatment. Regardless of Chip's "disabilities" he is a happy, healthy and active dog. He uses his sense of touch and smell to navigate this world with ease! He is a true inspiration to us all! Chip is house-trained and leash trained. He does great with other dogs, but needs to be with dogs who can tolerate his playfulness and inability to notice if they are giving him signals to stop playing. Chip uses other dogs as his eyes and ears, so he needs another dog in his forever home. He enjoys being outside and does well with cats and older children. *FENCED YARD REQUIRED (no underground/invisible fences) If you are interested in adopting Chip, please fill out an application from our website.
