A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

To adopt click the No Obligation Adoption Form such a sweet, sweet boy Ashton is a sweet boy who was found with his possible sister at a known dumping site in Memphis. The rescue has helped transform many starved and emaciated dogs, but Ashton was a special baby. His transformation has been amazing to experience. We believe he was tied out with a cable causing a deep cut all the way around his neck. He couldn't bark or hold food down. For months he was fed a special liquid diet, standing up and was on several medications. Now, Ashton is eating regular dry dog food, his bark has returned and he only takes an occasional antacid. One of the best parts of Ashton's personality is he's very affectionate and well behaved in public. He loves to play with humans and other dogs. Ashton could easily be your toddler's babysitter, although never recommend leaving any dog alone with young ones. Even though Ashton had a very rough start in life, he has never met a stranger. He is full of love and wants to share that love with everyone he meets. If you want a devoted, fun, loving medium size companion , Ashton is your guy! Ashton would like a canine brother or sister to complete his new family. Thank you for considering adopting a new family member. Most of our adoptable dogs live inside foster homes. I am a handsome Staffordshire Terrier mix boy, white with tan spots on my ears. I’m about 3 years old, a 50#ish bundle of cuddles & kisses! I would fit well with a single person, couple or a family. I love to cuddle and play with kids!! I like other dogs but since I was hurt by other dogs in the past, I am leery of larger dominant dogs. I would do best as an only dog or with just one other smaller, not dominant dog. I do need slower introductions with bigger dogs, so dog parks would not be good for me. Walk with you and/or our family would be awesome though This a note from my foster Mom. Lucas is fun loving, affectionate and playful. Never met a stranger when it comes to humans and he gives pretty good hugs! He's patient and eager to please, very smart and a quick learner. He has good leash manners and is very focused on his humans. Lucas is very playful but can be a little too rowdy for older dogs, he loves to play fetch and is always smiling! Lucas would be happy as can be to go for long walks and take naps on the couch every day ! Thank you for considering adopting a new family member. Most of our adoptable dogs live inside foster homes. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (long coat). To adopt click the No Obligation Adoption Form Hi, I’m Petey and I’m so lucky to be a D2C dog! You see, I spent the beginning of last winter chained in the icy rain and mud without a scrap of shelter! Passers-by were throwing bottles and trash at me, too. The elderly lady whose yard I was chained in was too ill to take care of me, and didn’t know if I was a boy or a girl! But, she was very kind to let me go so that I can find a true, loving home. I’m pretty young, but I was so severely neglected that I developed cataracts. I’m almost blind in my right eye due, but with daily borage & flax oil my left eye is improving. I’m undergoing heartworm treatment, but will be good as new very soon. But enough about the bad old days! Let me tell you about the new, wonderful me! Once I had a chance, I learned how to stay in a kennel, how to potty outside, and how to “sit.” I’m still learning how to walk on a leash (a harness helps a lot). Best of all, I’ve learned there are good people who love and appreciate me! I had a Foster Mom for a while – check out the video she made! Now I’ve got a Foster Dad, and I just adore him! He says I’m an active, affectionate little guy who just wants attention and love. I’m nonaggressive and approachable, and contentedly follow my older foster brother and sister. And, I happily play with other young dogs whenever I get a chance! In spite of my vision problem, I’m rather a handsome fellow. I’m about 3 years old & 55 lb, and my German Shepherd coloring is accented with a touch of white on paws and chest. Best feature: my jaunty curled tail, which I wag whenever the opportunity presents! And just wait until you see how adorable I am when I cock my head to one side, or lie down sedately with my dainty white-tipped paws crossed in front! If you’ve got a lot of love to give, you won’t find a more willing, grateful recipient than me! Thank you for considering adopting a new family member. I’m a striking strawberry blonde, and with my unusual coloring, elegant figure and alert expression, I get noticed wherever I go! I’m a healthy young lady weighing about 35#s and shouldn't grow much more I was dumped at a convenience store at Hwy 51 & Simmons Road. But I’m not about to let that get me down! I’m happy and outgoing and though I tend to get nervous when cars drive by (the result of being dumped on a busy road?) just let me INTO a car and I’ll happily ride, ride, ride into the sunset or any vista you desire! Because I’m just a youngster, I need guidance on walking etiquette, but I LOVE walks and will sit very nicely when you hook on my leash! My energy level is high, so I need active companionship – adventurous adults, older kids, and active doggie companions are my cup of tea! I can get along with cats, too – sort of – we won’t be best buds, but I can live and let live. If you appreciate an exotic beauty who wants to live the active life, I’m the perfect companion for you! Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (medium coat). To adopt click the No Obligation Adoption Form Let me introduce myself – my name is Whistler, and I’m a Catahoula boy, 55 lb. and about a year old. I was miserably ill, infected all over my body, and starving when Foster Mom found me in Shelby Forest. All my ribs showed, and every time I took a breath, I whistled! (That’s how I got my name.) Now I’m a healthy, happy representative of the State of Louisiana! I’m on slow heartworm treatment, and my skin has healed, showing off my distinctive red/tan merle and white pattern. My eyes are arresting – one brown and one blue. Once she took me home, Foster Mom realized that I must have been abandoned by my family – I can walk on a leash, I’m crate trained, and I’ve never, ever had an accident in the house. I’m friendly without being all over you – I like kids, and I do fine with other dogs as long as they are not aggressive toward me. I’m kinda scared of cats! I once chased a feral cat, and she taught me a sharp lesson – and I’m super-smart and a fast learner! Like others of my breed, I’m extremely active and need plenty of room to run and play. I just love balls and toys that will fit in my mouth! My favorite game is “I keep the ball” – I will let go, but ONLY if you promise to throw it for me so I can bring it back! (I told you I’m smart!) I’m the perfect watch dog, because I’m territorial and super-protective of my family – to keep you safe, I’ll circle around you several times whenever I sense danger near. Are you looking for a smart, loyal youngster to guard your country home and share an active outdoor lifestyle? You can’t find a better companion than me!
