A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shiba Inu / Chow Chow / Mixed (long coat). To adopt click the No Obligation Adoption Form Local Adoption Only I’m called Suki, and I’m a bit shy – and very, very sweet. I’m a Shiba Inu / Chow mix girl with a pretty, short golden tan coat, stand-up ears, and warm golden brown eyes. I’m a youngster, less than five years old, weighing 35 lb. I ran the streets of Arlington for quite a while, with only a flea collar to show anyone ever cared for me. Then someone took me home! But they couldn’t keep me and when no one stepped up to foster or adopt me, I was out on the street again the very next day! I was so hurt and disheartened that all I could do was lie down in someone’s driveway. That’s when people began to take notice and post me on Facebook, and that’s how two kind people found me and at alsts, took me in until I can find a home of my own. Foster Mom and Dad love my calm, gentle ways! And how they laugh to see me dance two-legged for my dinner – or bounce around on all fours like Pepe le Pew! True to my Chow heritage, it takes me a while to warm up to new people, but I’m really a sweetheart. When you talk gently to me, and touch me softly, I’ll come to understand that you truly love me, and then I’ll be so deeply attached to you! I need a quiet home with a fenced yard where I feel safe and protected, and one or two loving friends who appreciate lifetime, absolute loyalty. I’m spayed, I get along well with most other dogs and I walk nicely on a leash. You can easily overnight me in my kennel, I’m perfectly comfortable there. If you are looking for the quiet devotion I can offer, I’m the loving soul you’ve dreamed of! Thank you for considering adopting a new family member. I’m a handsome Staffordshire Terrier mix boy, white with tan spots on my ears. I’m about 2 years old, a hefty 53lb bundle of cuddles & kisses! And let me tell you – I’m a walking, tail-wagging miracle! I say that, because my friends are pretty sure I was a bait dog. I showed up at a home in Bartlett bleeding from my ears, face, and legs. There are signs I was attacked by other dogs, and dragged down a street behind a vehicle. My kindhearted rescuer got me to a vet right away, and now I’m neutered, vaccinated, and healing – from my visible wounds, and from the heartbreak which hurt every bit as much. Now I know I’m loved, and Foster Mom is helping me learn that other dogs won’t hurt me. One thing I didn’t need help with – understanding how wonderful kids are! I just love to cuddle and play with them, and I’ll be a GREAT protector if anyone tries to hurt them! I can’t tell you the story of my suffering and escape, but I can show my gratitude in every joyful greeting and heartfelt smile! Let me show you the true meaning of happiness! I’m a striking strawberry blonde, and with my unusual coloring, elegant figure and alert expression, I get noticed wherever I go! I’m a healthy puppy weighing about 25lb now – so I’ll grow a bit. I was dumped at a convenience store at Hwy 51 & Simmons Road. But I’m not about to let that get me down! I’m happy and outgoing and though I tend to get nervous when cars drive by (the result of being dumped on a busy road?) just let me INTO a car and I’ll happily ride, ride, ride into the sunset or any vista you desire! Because I’m just a youngster, I need guidance on walking decorum, but I LOVE walks and will sit very nicely when you hook on my leash! My energy level is high, so I need active companionship – adventurous adults, older kids, and active doggie companions are my cup of tea! I can get along with cats, too – sort of – we won’t be best buds, but I can live and let live. If you appreciate an exotic beauty who wants to live the active life, I’m the perfect companion for you! Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (long coat). To adopt click the No Obligation Adoption Form Hi, I’m Petey and I’m so lucky to be a D2C dog! You see, I spent the beginning of last winter chained in the icy rain and mud without a scrap of shelter! Passers-by were throwing bottles and trash at me, too. The elderly lady whose yard I was chained in was too ill to take care of me, and didn’t know if I was a boy or a girl! But, she was very kind to let me go so that I can find a true, loving home. I’m pretty young, but I was so severely neglected that I developed cataracts. I’m almost blind in my right eye due, but with daily borage & flax oil my left eye is improving. I’m undergoing heartworm treatment, but will be good as new very soon. But enough about the bad old days! Let me tell you about the new, wonderful me! Once I had a chance, I learned how to stay in a kennel, how to potty outside, and how to “sit.” I’m still learning how to walk on a leash (a harness helps a lot). Best of all, I’ve learned there are good people who love and appreciate me! I had a Foster Mom for a while – check out the video she made! Now I’ve got a Foster Dad, and I just adore him! He says I’m an active, affectionate little guy who just wants attention and love. I’m nonaggressive and approachable, and contentedly follow my older foster brother and sister. And, I happily play with other young dogs whenever I get a chance! In spite of my vision problem, I’m rather a handsome fellow. I’m about 3 years old & 55 lb, and my German Shepherd coloring is accented with a touch of white on paws and chest. Best feature: my jaunty curled tail, which I wag whenever the opportunity presents! And just wait until you see how adorable I am when I cock my head to one side, or lie down sedately with my dainty white-tipped paws crossed in front! If you’ve got a lot of love to give, you won’t find a more willing, grateful recipient than me! Thank you for considering adopting a new family member. I am heartworm negative and up to date on all of my shots. My foster mom says I am the perfect snuggle bug beause I love to hang out on the couch or in the bed and take a nice long nap with my people. I lived in a car for awhile when my old owner couldn’t find a place for me, but that doesn’t keep me from loving car rides. I am great with other dogs, but I like cats a lot more than they seem to like me. One of my favorite things to do is play with my foster sister and I make sure to be extra gentle with her becaue she’s just a puppy. I should probably be in a fenced in yard and I love to run around outside for a few minutes before dinner time. I have a special talent for catching treats out of the air. My record is five in a row. I like kids a lot and don’t even mind when they pull my ears, but I should probably only hang out with kids who are my size or bigger. I am crate trained and I am also a perfect lady when my foster mom leaves me loose in the house. I could use some leash training, but I do know how to sit and lay down when I am told. If you want a big, snuggly goofball to hang out with I am definitely the dog for you. Thank you for considering adopting a new family member. Most of our adoptable dogs live inside foster homes. Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (medium coat). To adopt click the No Obligation Adoption Form Let me introduce myself – my name is Whistler, and I’m a Catahoula boy, 55 lb. and about a year old. I was miserably ill, infected all over my body, and starving when Foster Mom found me in Shelby Forest. All my ribs showed, and every time I took a breath, I whistled! (That’s how I got my name.) Now I’m a healthy, happy representative of the State of Louisiana! I’m on slow heartworm treatment, and my skin has healed, showing off my distinctive red/tan merle and white pattern. My eyes are arresting – one brown and one blue. Once she took me home, Foster Mom realized that I must have been abandoned by my family – I can walk on a leash, I’m crate trained, and I’ve never, ever had an accident in the house. I’m friendly without being all over you – I like kids, and I do fine with other dogs as long as they are not aggressive toward me. I’m kinda scared of cats! I once chased a feral cat, and she taught me a sharp lesson – and I’m super-smart and a fast learner! Like others of my breed, I’m extremely active and need plenty of room to run and play. I just love balls and toys that will fit in my mouth! My favorite game is “I keep the ball” – I will let go, but ONLY if you promise to throw it for me so I can bring it back! (I told you I’m smart!) I’m the perfect watch dog, because I’m territorial and super-protective of my family – to keep you safe, I’ll circle around you several times whenever I sense danger near. Posted Breed: Chow Chow / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). To adopt click the No Obligation Adoption Form My name is Bud. I’m a Chow/Shepherd mix youngster, about three years old and 50 lb. Not long ago, something drove me into the street with a badly injured back leg. In too much pain to walk anymore, I chose a doorstep to take a short rest – but I couldn’t get back up! That’s where two curious cats found me, and that’s where my life changed forever. The cats and doorstep belonged to a wonderful couple who didn’t yell or chase me away, but carefully carried me into their back yard and gave me food and water. Even though they were so kind, I was scared! But I was too worn out to run away – so I crept behind their trash can and slept for hours. When I woke up, they took me to the vet. I can’t tell anyone what I went through, but the vet read the signs: I was kept on concrete, neglected, and probably abused. Another dog attacked me and hurt my leg. And I’m heartworm positive. Foster Dad and Mom made sure my leg got treated, and generous people donated funds to get me neutered and heartworm free for my Forever Family. Meanwhile, I’m learning so much! Foster Dad says I’m really smart. Though completely untrained when I was found, one month later I “sit” with just a hand gesture – and, simply tap the top of my kennel, and I’m inside! One thing I’m still working on: Bark control! I take my duties as a guard dog very, very seriously. I won’t let anyone hurt my dear friends! LOVE is the most important lesson I’ve learned. Kindness opened my heart, and trust, loyalty, and happiness flower there day by day. I’m ready for a bright future with people who truly love me! Are you the one I was searching for?
