Posted Breed: Shepherd / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Hello! My name is Charlie! I used to roam the streets of a neighborhood in north Mississippi and really didn’t trust people much until I came to Southern Friends Animal Society. That was over a year ago and I’ve been here learning to trust people and enjoy their company! They say I’m doing wonderfully because I like meeting new people as long as they let me check them out first! I’m a single guy, but I have roommates because I enjoy the company of other canine friends. I’m a handsome black and gold/tan medium-sized boy of about 4 years who is up-to-date on my shots, neutered and now heartworm NEGATIVE (on preventative). I’m looking for my forever home and would love to meet you and your other canine(s) if you think you would be interested. Just email my caregivers at sfanimalsociety@gmail.com if you would like to meet me and we’ll go from there! I hope to see you soon! ~Charlie VOLUNTEERS ALL FALL IN LOVE WITH CHARLIE. He is a wonderful, healthy pup who would love to be your dog's playful companion! He's the perfect size, not too small, not too big. He LOVES to play with other dogs, so for his happiness, we recommend he be adopted into a home with one or more other playful dogs. Charlie is house and crate trained and can live indoors or out.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Miniature Pinscher-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Ruby came to Southern Friends from a hoarding case along with her puppies in tow! We didn't really know which ones were hers and which belonged to other Momma dogs because they all shared the responsibility of feeding and caring for them. Her puppies have all been adopted now so it's Ruby's turn! She is a little unsure of new people for about a minute, but when they sit down she gets more comfortable with them. She's a pretty girl and a little on the independent side. She will be UTD on shots and spayed on 5/23/17. She can go to her forever home around 5/25/17.

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Dachshund (short coat). Val is the mother to Ida, Tater, Tot, Spud, Sweetie and Russet (we believe she "adopted" aka stole Sweetie and Russet from one of the tan Momma dogs from the same hoarding case!) She's been a wonderful attentive and protective Momma to her babies and is ready to find her forever home now. She's a petite girl, gets along with foster's dog, likes to play and gently takes treats. She knows "no". She does well with other dogs (she is the submissive one). She will be UTD on shots and spayed on 5/23/17. Then will be ready to go to her forever home a few days later.

Posted Breed: Akita / German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). UPDATE 12/25/16: Clyde is in a foster home with Bonnie while going through heartworm treatment. He should be ready for her forever home in about two weeks! He does well with the puppy in the foster home and is very gentle. He seems to get his feelings hurt easily when the foster raises her voice, even to one of the other dogs (he pretty much stays out of trouble). He does NOT do well in a crate, but does well tethered when the foster is away. He has had no accidents in the house! He greets everyone lovingly and gently. He is well behaved all the time! He would not do well around cats as he wants to go after them. Oh, one more thing...he's very vain - LOVES to look at the handsome boy in the mirror! LOL Hi! I'm Clyde! I was rescued along with my sidekick, Bonnie, off the streets of Memphis by a Good Samaritan and am so happy to be safe now. I'm a sweet boy and a BIG boy! I'm about 4 years old. I'm UTD on shots and neutered. I'll be going through heartworm treatment soon to get rid of those nasty things, too! (Treatment will be covered in my adoption fee.) heart emotico I'm UTD on shots and spayed. I am heartworm positive, but we are working on getting that cleared up. They think I'm a Shepherd mix. Contact us at sfanimalsociety@gmail.com if you are interested in meeting this handsome boy!

She should be ready for her forever home in about two weeks! She wants to play with the puppy in the foster home (but has to take it easy for now) and she does get bored easily, but she also minds well. She's doing great in her crate and no accidents in the house! She loves everyone. She enjoys stuffed animals and "guards" them from the other dogs. She's always a HAPPY girl! Hi! I'm Bonnie and am new to Southern Friends! I was rescued along with my sidekick, Clyde, off the streets of Memphis by a Good Samaritan and am so happy to be safe now. I'm a sweet, lovable girl who LOVES belly rubs! I also have one lazy ear (my left one) that doesn't want to stand up straight, but that's part of my charm! heart emoticon I'm UTD on shots and spayed. I am light heartworm positive and am being treated. They think I'm a Shepherd mix. Contact us at sfanimalsociety@gmail.com if you are interested in meeting this beauty!
